Update on DROIDX Gingerbread and DROIDX2 Launch Software, Xperia Play Will be First With Android 2.3 on Verizon (Updated)

It’s May 16 and if we were going to see a roll out of Gingerbread to the DROIDX, we probably would have seen some signs from Verizon that it was actually happening.  As you may have guessed, we haven’t seen any of them, so we’ll have to assume that it won’t be here today or maybe even this week for that matter.  There are a couple of rumors floating around behind the scenes that suggest it may not be out until after the DROIDX2 hits on May 26.  And why would they do that?

Well, because the DX2 is also looking more and more like it won’t launch with Android 2.3, but 2.2 instead.  All of those leaked pictures we’ve seen from the user guide and launch kit with blue Blur are not Gingerbread according to our sources.  We were worried that they might slap the new Blur over 2.2 just like we saw on the Bionic at CES and those fears appear to have come true.  We’ve been told that the device guide for employees also clearly says “Froyo” and that dev builds of the phone are still running 2.2.  Just think, is there any way they would allow the original DX to be running newer software than its replacement?  They wouldn’t let it happen.

And to add to this rumor, we’ve also been told that when the Xperia Play launches on the 26 alongside the DX2, it will be dubbed the “first Verizon phone running Gingerbread.”

Update:  We have pics of an official update here.

Need a recap? DROIDX2 launching May 26 with new blue Blur, but only running 2.2.  Xperia Play launching May 26 with stock Gingerbread.  Original DROIDX won’t receive Android 2.3 until the DX2 has it.

Hopefully that didn’t ruin too many Mondays, but we wanted to keep you in the loop on what we’re hearing.  If things change, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Cheers CK and DB!

If I may quote Larry David, F’ck huuuuuuuugh, Moto/Verizon.

    • Guinness4power

It’s pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty pretty stupid.

  • Vzwagent

We did a hands on training with the Xperia play last month.  It was running 2.3 then and was pretty solid and seemed like a final build.  They kept saying the Xperia would be the first gingerbread device on our network at the training.  I haven’t seen anything else to say otherwise, they also gave the time frame of release as mid to late may.

  • Arthur

This is most certainly a Verizon move, Moto’s been trying to get them to update the DX since March. Verizon want’s to sell new handsets not upgrade old ones, I’m not surprised by this crap move and if you haven’t rooted your DX already Verizon has just given you a the best reason to do so. The only thing that Verizon is good for is their network, when it comes to customer service over upgrades and control of your handset, they treat you like a criminal. I wouldn’t be surprised if the locked boot loader was Verizon’s idea as well.  was Verizon’s idea as well.

Since we can grab it from the servers ourselves by checking for updates, I don’t have any clue why the hell they want us to wait. I’m getting tired of all the delays with updates for Verizon phones like my Droid X when they have it ready. Whats the point on having an awesome phone when the company(s) won’t support them by updating the software in a timely manner. I’m really getting sick of waiting for a year for an update….should be every 6 months in my opinion. I swear if they just give us a new blue/black blur and still use 2.2, I think I’m gonna be on the phone with Verizon Wireless and give them a piece of my mind………….like that will do anything hahaha. Point is, if they have the update and it signed and all that jazz, they should release it to be manually updated by the users by going to the check for updates button. Enough of my rant hahaha, sorry everyone but I had to vent. Everyone have a good day :-)

  • http://twitter.com/aaronhurt Aaron Hurt

Pure crappery. That’s what this is.

  • Chad

Hating Moto more and more everyday!!

  • LivinFree

Lol….. exactly what I stated over a week ago when the assumption was being made the GB build for the X was going to release this past weekend. Its not happening folks from what I’ve been told. VZW never releases an update that fast after approving it. Normally it is a min of 3 wks after approval for OTA t ostart rolling out. And with this crap about the X2 and Xperia it would not surprise me to see the original X GB update get released until sometime in June like I’ve said repeatedly time and time again.

    • Barlog

I agree, if there’s one thing I’ve learned from having every DROID phone since day one is Verizon will not /cannot release a single Android update correctly. I can’t believe how many times I’ve gotten my hope’s up for an update only to have Verizon screw it up one way or another. Lesson learned ether wait forever for the newest update and get pissed off that Verizon is taking forever. Or just ROOT! ;-)

  • http://profiles.google.com/jeremy.sheehan Jeremy Sheehan

hmmm….  I’ve had Gingerbread now for over a month on my OG Droid.  Viva la android hackers!

  • http://profiles.google.com/pdenson Paul Denson

My OG Droid has been happily running Gingerbread for some time now.

  • Buckgrad

Glad I got the leak. Unless the “official” has something new, I’m staying with the leak. I like it, and I have Netflix. Seriously looks like rooting is a good thing.

  • Anonymous

OMG OMG, I just got Gingerbread pushed to my iPhone

  • MyNameMarkiefMyFavColorRed

Apex 2.0 is good too but still in beta I thought? the 1.4.1 froyo based is perfection until the other one becomes fully stable (unless it already is?)

  • Mr.Joe

Droid X2 with blurified Froyo OR Xperia Play with pure uncut Google Gingerbread?

    It’s hard to pick ^_^;

    • Tesseract 3

      Man, tough choice.

    • Lestroisneon

From what I’ve read, seems like Xperia Play is going to have some custom SE apps on it- such as the camera app, thereby making it not-quite-stock.  Let’s see how that plays out with ‘promised’ updates…

  • MyNameMarcusMyFavColorBlue

I finally drank the Kool-Aid a couple weeks ago, rooted the phone and flashed apex. I suggest you do the same because the (free) options available out there are far and away better/more consistent than whatever you get from whoever is in charge. My droid x has become a far better phone battery life and overall productivity have both doubled, the rom is easily more stable than any of the gingerbread leaks, no blur, more customization. Apex 1.4.1 is great for newcomers. Take the plunge

  • Larry

    F*CK VERIZON!

  • Nescio1988

Whelp, time to update to the leaked version – I was waiting for the official version, but that’s apparently delayed indefinitely so what’s the point in waiting? Damnit Verizon.

Froyo launching on the DX2?………. way to make the phone even more of a pos.

  • Turd Furguson

AM I the only one who HATES the new blur? well the old blur too, but especially the new blur!

    • Trophynuts

       congratulations you are Actually

    • Boblank84

i very much dislike it also.  If you have not checked out apex 2.0. it has the lease amount of blur that i have seen on gb, and runs like a champ….

    • Rain_king46

While still not at the place where it will not get immediately replaced by LP+ it is still way better than previous versions. Widgets still suck, but it is getting better.

  • CharlieX

WTF?  I recieved the Gingerbread OTA this morning from Verizon.  I even “Sent in a tip” mentioning I took a photo of the install screen…..”Update 4.5.596.en.US has been downoaded and ….”

    • Turd Furguson

       Hook us up then!

im never getting on a contract with verizon ever again, they dont deserve my money. i would just use wifi ,skype/free text messaging app instead of paying 80+ a month

    • Trophynuts

then why don’t you just end your contract now?

      • Juan_ortega92

how?im on a two year contract

        • Trophynuts

you can cancel your service at any time. You pay the ETA but if your that pissed at VZW then paying the ETA would only be about 4 months of service.

          • Juan_ortega92

            whats the eta?

          • Tcal

            $350.00 I think

people should just quit whining about a stupid update.  I want it and all but, my phone still works and it works great.  Who really needs to complain about that

  • Trophynuts

according to P3Droid’s twitter this past weekend it sounds like the DX2 may actually have GB on it. but who knows at this point. Nor do i really care since i already have it on my DX.

  • TheVoiceOfReason

I am seriously about to leave Verizon and get a Nexus S on Sprint

  • Anonymous

That did ruin my monday :/ dammit.

  • Eric

Xperia is a joke compaired to the Droid X and X2.  And after Sony’s PSN fiasco, I won’t be wasting my time with that crap!

    • Alex W.

Sony Ericsson is hardly run by Sony and is mostly the old Ericsson company.  The two have nothing to do with each other.  I wouldn’t let the PSN problems worry you about the SE line of phones.

  • reyalP

Is there really a big difference between Gingerbread and what is on the phone now?  If so, what are the big differences?  A lot of people seem to need this update asap!

    • Tunkhannock

Well, apparently the new Netflix app will only work on Gingerbread, and not Froyo (or older).  That in and of itself is reason.

  • Sackdaddy

Alright, that settles it.  I was already considering going to the .595 build so I could stream Netflix, but figured I’d sit tight and wait for the OTA to .596.  But if this is the case I’ll be moving forward without Verizon/Moto.

Can someone please confirm the correct path from .588 un-rooted to .595 stock?  Thanks!

    • Larry

You don’t need to go to Gingerbread to stream Netflix, Xda has already figured out a way to do this without root. Google it, or just browse through Reddit/r/android.

I’m running Netflix on my unrooted, stock Android 2.2.1 Droid X.

      • Sackdaddy

Thank you sir!  I’ll look for it now!

      • Sackdaddy

I can’t seem to find an apk that will work.  Any chance you can post a link?  Thanks!

        • Anonymous

i couldn’t find it either and the threads on xda seem to indicate you need GB for it to work so idk…

          • Sackdaddy

I’m running .588 unrooted.  From what I’ve read, it’s the only leak having Netflix issues.  “Larry’s” response gave me hope, but when I did find what looked like it might work from the XDA website and downloaded the apk file, my phone states that it doesn’t have the program to open it :(

  • Interstellarmind

what happened to google telling these jerks to push updates and only refrain from pushing if there were HARDWARE constraints? holding back updates for the sake of marketing is a total scumbag move, verizon.

    • Juan_ortega92

it really is ,screw verizon they already signed off on the update and instead there updating other phones ,i thought the droid line up gets updaes faster .or maybe motorola told them to push it till after the release of the x2

    • Mr.Joe

Oh plz.  Everything in the world does this.

Welcome to the world population unfair advantageousness.

  • Christopher Kintz

Dear Revenue Income Sources, um, I mean “Loyal Customers”:  We got your money already, so you’ll wait and you’ll like it.  Want an update to your phone?  Buy a new one.  Just sign here on the dotted line…

    • digsoreos

LOL. That would be funnier if buying a new phone allowed you to satisfy your need to update your phone. At this time, however, it doesn’t seem like much of a jump from DX to DX2.

  • Toky_neg

Q?? tired of waiting for VZW to release GB…so going for the leaked one. My Q is ..can I go straight to .595 from .340 or do i have to do one leaked at a time till i get to .595??Thanks in advance!!

    • Toky_neg

Can some one shed some light on this ?? Please!

  • Anonymous

Yeah, this ruined my Monday. But then again, I’ve learned not to expect anything nice from Verizon ever.

  • Anonymous

    • Rain_king46

THIS is EXACTLY what we should expect from Verizon and Moto. Screw customer service, its all about trying to trick someone into buying a crappy new device.

      • Anonymous

Agreed. And you know, it’s funny…I left Blackberry for this very same reason. They release phones, then a few months later something better is out and they leave you by the wayside.

  • Anonymous

Why are people angry or care? First, there a 4 perfectly fine working leaks of 2.3 for the Droid X out already. And 2, what exactly is there in 2.3 that everyones been missing anyway?

Is it true that the US Xperias are coming with vanilla Android. Anybody else hear about this?

  • http://twitter.com/holyshityouguys Dan Rodriguez

yak a lack, glad i made the jump to leaked builds when i did, that would have been a long wait.

just sucks that the ROM devs have slowed up work until OTA since they are tired of working on leaks…

  • Rain_king46

Gives Moto the finger. Its pathetic that you let Samsung, the least customer service oriented company of them ALL, beat you to GB. Maybe if you spent some time taking care of your existing customers instead of locking your devices and releasing crappy new devices that are out of date before they are even released you wouldn’t piss EVERYONE off!?!

Bite me, I will re-install TBH’s GB, they better programmers than anybody at Moto anyway…. #bitter

    • Rain_king46

Isn’t this exactly what Moto and Verizon just promised Google they would NOT to do at I/O?

    • Trophynuts

i really don’t think you can point the finger at MOTO at this point. The ball is in VZW’s court now on when to push out the update. It’s purely a marketing move by the sounds of it.

    • Trophynuts

      • Anonymous

yep, and it’s the EXACT same crap they pulled with the D2 release and updating the DX (and Droid for that matter) to Froyo.  IIRC the og Droid was the first motorola phone to get froyo and they held back on updating the DX until after the launch of the Droid 2…  can’t remember where the incredible fell into place but it wouldn’t surprise me if it got the 2.2 update after the late summer launch as well.

  • Screwverizon

Verizon sucks. This has pushed me over the edge to get a custom rom. Damn their warranty.

  • Dsim91

Verizon is really starting to piss me off, they will be lucky if I stay till my contact ends.

  • Viciousking1914

    Grrrrrrr

  • Rlarson_Mn

Well that for sure sucks. Was prepared to scoop up that bad boy as soon as it was available, the Droid X2 that is. Guess I will be holding onto my Droid X for a bit longer. I sure am not going back to anything less that Gingerbread.

  • Hogasswildmc

Too bad Cyanogenmod isn’t supported on the DX.

  • Anonymous

It would be nice of Droid-Life would report news instead of rumors for a change.

Fact: Droid-Life DOES NOT KNOW WHEN GB IS COMING OUT FOR DX

    • Anonymous

Droid-Life is a blog. A lot of people request rumors to be posted as well as fact which is why you will find a “rumor” or “confirmed” in the post.

      • Interstellarmind

kellex always makes it clear when he’s hypebeastin’ or rumor propogating. in fact, i believe, he avoids doing it when he can (even to the point where he’s late on posting some rumors because he tries to get at least SOME confirmation). i actually respect his journalistic (blog-alistic?) integrity because he always let’s you know how shakey a rumor is and how solid a fact is.

actually read the posts on this site before making unfounded calls like that, c_hack.

        • Anonymous

Great comment by the way. :)

      • Mr.Joe

Maybe there should be a Rumor-Life.

    • digsoreos

Reuters is good for facts. I think most people read DL for any and every tidbit (news as well as rumor) about Android. But I can understand people not wanting every rumor that comes out of the woodwork without the least bit of substantiation or reliability of source to be reported on instantly.

    • Juan_ortega92

      lol so true

  • Anonymous

See everyone, clearly there’s no reason whatsoever to root and or run a custom ROM. They’ll release it in a timely manner when it’s ready. Stop being so impatient!

    *sarcasm tag

  • Hogasswildmc

First!….okay screw it I’m rooting again.
