It’s Official, Jelly Bean to Hit Verizon Galaxy S3 Starting December 14

This week we have been watching Verizon play with their current support documents for the Galaxy S3, as they prepped for an update to be pushed to the device sometime in the future. This morning, we finally have confirmation that the Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) update will begin tomorrow, December 14.

At first the update will go out in batches, so don’t be alarmed if your device doesn’t receive it first thing in the morning. You will need some patience as Verizon starts to test the waters of the new software on a larger scale. Of course, Jelly Bean brings with it Google Now, enhanced notifications, and Project Butter. On top of that, Verizon has also enabled global roaming, Isis mobile wallet, and a few bug fixes.

And thanks again to our tipster who told us last week that December 14 was the day.

Do we have some happy SGS3 owners here?

  • Absolutely incredible how smooth Project Butter makes in-app experience as well as home screen stuff… Scrolling my Newsfeed in Facebook now feels weirdly fast.

Anyone know a way to change the double home press to bring up Google Now instead of the terrible, half-baked S-Voice app?

  • My google maps flickers constantly now. Figures, Verizon sits on an update for months and it’s still buggy.

Same thing happened with that infamous droid x update.

  • Download almost done… over wifi took about 5-6 minutes.

  • Downloading now in Brooklyn.

  • Lingo

Downloading now in Delaware!! I’ve been checking all morning and it now just came available OTA.

Update happening here. 400+MB it says

  • It runs smoother and the menu screens are snappy. Doesn’t look like Verizon put a lot of bloatware apps on it. all i’ve seen is accessories and vzr Navigation

Wow, it took my phone all of 15 minutes or less from beginning to end, including the reboot. But kudos!

    • Mike

All finished, took longer for I am at work, and everyone is using the bandwidth. Not too different than before, but I am still looking.

For those of you clicking “check new” on your phone looking for the update, you should note the comment listed on the Verizon site that reads, “Customers who would like to manually download the upgrade through the settings menu will be able to within the next week.” Sounds like if you aren’t in the group getting it pushed, you will have to wait a little longer.
