It’s Official, Jelly Bean to Hit Verizon Galaxy S3 Starting December 14

This week we have been watching Verizon play with their current support documents for the Galaxy S3, as they prepped for an update to be pushed to the device sometime in the future. This morning, we finally have confirmation that the Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) update will begin tomorrow, December 14.

At first the update will go out in batches, so don’t be alarmed if your device doesn’t receive it first thing in the morning. You will need some patience as Verizon starts to test the waters of the new software on a larger scale. Of course, Jelly Bean brings with it Google Now, enhanced notifications, and Project Butter. On top of that, Verizon has also enabled global roaming, Isis mobile wallet, and a few bug fixes.

And thanks again to our tipster who told us last week that December 14 was the day.

Do we have some happy SGS3 owners here?

I’ve been waiting for this update for months. I had 4.1 with my GNex prior to it taking a dunk in the lake, and have had the GS3 since July, waiting for the update. I’m pretty pumped since I only got to use 4.1 for about a week before my phone took a dive…pun intended.

  • briandroid

Can we discuss wifi tether options for those using FoxFi, who do not plan to root? Like is there another app– please help. I super duper don’t want to lose my internet connection tomorrow!

    • briandroid

      pretty please…

    • wongjo

Try Fattin tether better than Foxfi

      • briandroid

Just downloaded and tried it– works like a charm and I think you’re right about having better connectivity than FoxFi. Thank you so very much! You, sir, are awesome!!! And big thanks to DL and the community here!

  • jboogie1289

Any early birds getting the worm, or Jellybean? From time to time they do send them out a lil sooner, I’m just saying.

  • d3mps3y

Unbelievable! Didnt think this day would ever come….

  • dean2359

I’m rooted running the king kang rom ,will I be missing anything by not getting this update?

  • joeyjoefus

  • So if I’m running the leaked K1 (the one before the last), do I need to go back to stock or will it allow me to OTA?

    • would need to go back to stock, or could just but the latest leak on your phone, consider it is the same as this ota

  • Julian Coronado

Verizon should also include an apology letter too!

  • Simple, Beautiful, Useful, Powerful, Control

  • nyrmetros

When is the Thunderbolt ICS update coming?

  • Peedro

BOUT TIME!!! give me my jelly bean da***it!!

  • Hopefully they fix the gps thing mine sucks still

    • Mine too cant even use google maps for navigation any more

  • chris

only about a month or 2 behind everyone else.

  • mfzero

  • Mark Senape

A little late for flagship phone.

  • now that I know this is the official release, I plan to root and install it myself tonight. I was waiting on the official build and now we know which one it is. I’m worried installing this leak will break current rooting methods and relock the device.

  • Rob

  • JazzoRenee

    Oh shyt, oh my god!

  • Casey Puyleart

yeah – except i’ve been running the leaks since VRBLI5 (first leak). 😀 Just good to know that the final OTA will be VRBLK3 so I don’t have to mess with setting all my stuff up yet again. Also gave me a reason to upgrade my wife’s SGS3 last night to the debloated version that i’ve been test driving on my phone this week as well.

  • Eric

About damn time but now I want 4.2 because 4.1 is old.

    • chris125

you might want to wait until google gets the bugs of 4.2 worked out. It is causing a lot of problems for many and I can only imagine the b*tching that would happen if they pushed that to your device

  • Chris Long

    JUST ROOT!!!

  • NotConvinced

What is with the small update size? Is Verizon trying to say that they found some magic mushroom that shrinks the update size for the Galaxy S3? The update for Motorola on Verizon was over 200MB and other carriers that updated the Galaxy S3 were over 200MB also. I find it very hard to believe that this is the full update to Jelly Bean.

    • hkklife

The full “leaked” K3 stock image is ~1.2Gb in size. I know, as I just downloaded it last week and it took forever until a few mirrors popped up. Heck, at least VZW doesn’t make people use Kies, right?!

    • chris125

from engadget: Update: We just received word from Verizon that the support page is incorrect and that the update will be around 400MB. This makes it one of the larger updates, but still nowhere as hefty as AT&T’s.
So like everything else verizon screwed it up on the support document.

      • tobiasfunke

It said 67 mb a few hours ago. Verizon has fixed it.

    • …..what are you talking about? it says its 400.7 MB….

  • Michael G

It’s officially Dec 14th ’til VZW changes it’s collective mind like usual.

  • Chris Long

Waiting for Verizon is nuts. I’ve been on Beantown_106’s Jelly Bean Build for about six weeks now. Just root, flash a stable rom like Beans and forget about Big Red.

  • For some reason I still don’t believe it. They could tell me the exact time its coming out and I still would not believe it.

  • Buckoman

This is the last build that was leaked. However, I’m running into a small but really annoying problem. I just factory reset it and that fixed the sluggishness, but the two finger notification expand isn’t working. Is there some way to fix this?

    • natkcirrad

use two fingers but pinch horizontally outward to expand, inward to contract

  • JohnPA2006

Windows Mobile 6.5 For life Fools !!

    • Chris Long

Only a fool would buy a Windows phone.

      • Trevor G

      • JohnPA2006

I’m being silly, the Motorola Q9M is from 2007 and ran Windows Mobile 6.5
I actually still have it in a drawer someplace. Nothing to do with Windows Phone.

  • Soofdawg
  • StockGS3er

    Hell Yes!

  • FortitudineVincimus

Need to unfreeze “SDM” (to get OTA notice) and undo a number of tweaks to the SystemUI.apk (so OTA will not fail) and reset the secure element in Google Wallet all BEFORE this OTA hits. Oh, and make sure to have OTA Vodo Root Keeper installed so can keep root post OTA.

    AND.. make a nandroid backup.

  • Neighbo

Yeah, yeah, I’ll believe it when I see it waiting for me, after The Hobbit midnight show.

  • i am excited and its the wife s3, yet she doesnt care at all about it

  • Isis, blerg. Enable Google Wallet, ya bastards.

  • AJ

Now I wonder how long it’ll take for us to get the Premuim Sweet.. I’m guessing by Q2 next year!

  • mustardhomie

I’ll believe it when i see it.

  • David Caccavo

it’s about time. I’d be happy if Verizon was the first to release an update. less pissed would be more accurate

  • S.Ober

wow I get JB just before I upgrade to the Note II. lol my wife will be happy with my S3 now.

  • AJ

Lol, the update page still says “…software updrade…”

  • shawn

    im in shock!

  • All you will ever need

  • DontBeConfused

    About damn time

    • rubthebuddha

      preach it brother

      • michael arazan

Welcome to the first and last JellyBean update. Exactly the same they did for the Gnex, last in the entire world to receive the update for the device. I only Hope that you GS3 owners will get the current version of 4.2 instead of the 4.1.1 we have on the Gnex that they seem to have given up on updating.

        • GS3 will probably see 4.2 at the most. Anything after that will be brought to us thankfully by the amazing hack and mod community.

  • GregSki86

Being that I am w/ America’s LARGEST mobile company and I get this update last is a embarrassment anyway you look at it. Thanks for the update verizon, your update schedule for devices is still sh*t

  • EvanTheGamer

  • jboogie1289

Don’t say that too loudly or you’ll be mistaken for whining and not rooting!! I know all too well, and I guess I’m at fault for not rooting my high dollar device and demanding from the carrier to have the latest OS there is. I thought that was called “customer satisfaction”. It’s bad enough to fall behind the other subpar carriers but geesh!!! So now, let’s do that dance called “Jellybean”!!!!!

  • Hahaha, Android

And yet, it’s still a major revision behind. GG Samsung. Let’s check my iPhone… yep, it’s got the latest iOS, has since the day it was released by Apple.

    • John Economides

      You are so cool.

      • jboogie1289

        Ummmm……NOT and that’s why she’s here!!

    • GregSki86

I hate apple but you have a definite point

    • but you only just got a decent mapping program…

    • Hey! I found him! It’s “that guy!”

      • madcow06

NO SOUP FOR YOU!! classic episode.

    • jzwerlz43

and what major revisions has ios 6 done for you? apple maps? you should consider yourself lucky google gave apple a google maps app again

    • BulletTooth_Tony

Unless you have the iPhone 5 you really don’t have the same OS running…. Sorry. Just because the version number is the same doesn’t mean it is the same… Apple disables features on older phones and iPads every update… They just pass along a number to you to fool you…. Sorry about your luck.

      • dangolds

Sometime yes, sometimes no. IPhone 4S got everything in the iOS 6 update that the iPhone 5 got. iPhone 4 got blocked from Siri and turn by turn on Apple maps, but got everything else from ios5 and ios6. Maybe not a perfect solution, but my guess is that if Android OEMs and carriers moved to the Apple method of doing software updates, there would be less angst and frustration for most of you guys.

        • jboogie1289

          Huh, what???

        • JazzoRenee

          Who’s frustrated.

Every IPhone user that I know that upgraded, the only thing they say is Ohhhh it’s so much faster. WTH

So other than ir being faster, what exactly changed . Nothing!!

        • chris125

I think most would rather not get a watered down update. Heck most people do not care about updates as it is, otherwise the nexus would be top sellers on the carriers which we all know wasnt the case as shown by the galaxy nexus.

    • Chris Hollenbeck

I would have you go to the Verizon corporate office to share your observation, but Apple Maps would probably lead you into a middle of a desert somewhere.

    • Chris Long

Big deal, even with the late updates, Android OS > iOS. Not to mention the GS3 is a far superior phone.

    • JazzoRenee

Yea, updates that my OG Galaxy S had 2 years ago.
Hope that notification bar is working out for you.

      • dangolds

Come on, that’s like asking how Android users are enjoying folders, buying movies on their devices and using the Netflix app. iOS had all of those features before Android, but it doesn’t matter today. If in 2012, both devices have these features as well as notification shades, personal assistants and turn by turn navigation, then what difference does it make who had which feature first? All that matters is when you compare the devices that exist today, what is your preference? If you are swayed by trivial matters like who came out with stuff first, then how could you ever support Android – the timing of how long it took Android to develop a truly competitive app market would kill your argument right there.

        • jboogie1289

        • KennyVeltre

          Android had folders first.

        • JazzoRenee

What are you even talking about, Apple did not have a notification bar, folders, and a boat load of other features In 2010 barely 2011. Please Take a giant size seat and read up about your beloved grapple device.

These Apple fanboys who know nothing about their own product , crack me up.

          • jboogie1289

            He’s mad bro!! Lmao!!

          • JazzoRenee

hahahahahah I wanted to tell him I don’t need to watch Netflix on a tiny 3.5inch when I have 55′ Samsung LCD to do that on. blahaha

    • MicroNix

Hahahaha, fanboy. You have the latest OS minus all of the best new features you have the latest device. Some people would call that versions behind, but you just listen to Apple and call it the latest version. Don’t worry, we understand 🙂

  • I am so glad I held out… I thought it would for sure be well into 2013 until we saw JB. Look at you Verizon, good for you!

  • jzwerlz43

Finishing up finals tomorrow for college. going home for my four week winter break. jelly bean update for my galaxy s3. What more could i ask for to make a great friday?

    • YEMan0443

I’m with you on that one! The 12.12.12 concert distracted me last night. If I had JB any earlier than Friday I’d get nothing done for my final tonight.

      • jzwerlz43

dude that concert was amazing! i was so dissapointed i missed Bon jovi’s performace thanfully im seeing them this summer at metlife. but man rolling stones and the who still got it! but then kanye west came after the who and just ruined everything…

        • DMZMAN

Kanye West was sooooo bad compared to all the other acts that he didn’t even belong there. I couldn’t help but notice the cast of The Sopranos making their appearance along with HBO playing reruns of the series starting just very recently. A connection? I wunda……

          • jzwerlz43

Good call i didn’t even notice that lol

    • A.

Literally in the same situation! So happy <3

    • SAME

  • So does anyone know what Samsung is doing with SVoice? Jelly Bean has Google Now and Google’s excellent voice search which pretty much makes SVoice look ridiculous.

    • jboogie1289

I read somewhere this morning that S-Voice is supposed to be getting enhanced. Imagine that, with Google Now coming with JB and all. That will be interesting.

      • So does Samsung just completely remove Google Now from their devices?

        • jboogie1289

Nope. You have the luxury of having both. I’m just relaying what I saw and I could be wrong since things have been put up and then removed. I’ll be happy either way just as long as I get the update.

  • Derek Traini

I am using the leaked update, and I hope that there is a small difference they made with the official leak because you cannot expand notifications using the 2 finger pulldown gesture, you have to do an awkward horizontal pinch or zoom.

    • Samsung probably changed it. OEMs like to screw with things for no good reason. Also, on 4.1.2 and beyond, you just have to use one finger, though I’m sure Samsung will change that.

      • Derek Traini

Yeah but I was at VZW last night and the Note 2 had it, but our phones won’t. And the Note 2 is still on 4.1.1

  • Matthew Durst

it must have been the angry emails i’ve been sending ever since it came out for ATT users that finally pushed them over the edge…

    • GregSki86

I’m sure Verizon used those emails as tp and wiped their a*s w/ your complaints. But their customer service is #1 lmao

      • Matthew Durst

thats assuming they even printed them, which i highly doubt they would waste the paper to print out my complaints…

        • Derek Traini

I see what you did there..
