I would agree that if you bork your phone due to your messing with the phone it shouldn’t be covered by warranty. But you yourself said 99% of your customers issues are fixable. And I bet most of those that can’t are not related to the romming efforts. Yes there have been valid bricks but most of the time its an actual developer bricking his phone.

I feel based on these facts that I should have a valid warranty still in affect for issues not caused by me. I or anybody I know have ever used a warranty on modded phone. Actually most of my phones have had issues fixed through development…. including my Nexus.

You can have your opinion but my Nexus has been the best smartphone I’ve owned and yes its because of the development. I had problems with my Droid 1 that was only fixed through ROMs. I will never own another Motorola phone till they properly unlock.

However I feel your pain having to deal with endless people that don’t know how to use their phones and probably want a replacement for every little issue.

I very know very much what I am talking about. As an indirect, I am able to provide services that a corp store would never dream of. I offer rooting, ROMs, and in-house services that even very few independant stores offer. But I also get 3-5 people every week bringing in a phone that they have borked trying to customize themselves. Sure, I can restore about 99% of them, one way or the other, but having a store with a qualified tech is rarity. How many other phones get returned as “defective”, when the defect was the wanna-be hacker that couldn’t figure out how Safestrap works?
I am all for letting customers use their phone in any way they choose, as long as they accept responsibility for their actions. If you want a warranty, then deal with stock, if want to customize, then its on you. The same principle applies to cars. If you swap the motor out in your new Mustang, then don’t expect Ford to replace it if it blows.
As for your “Piece of junk Nexus”…I said out of the box. Ask anyone who bought a stock GNEX with no updates, and if they tell you it was a great phone, they are lying, or just a fanboy. That phone was horrid at release. I admit, that with the right work, its a great phone. But for “Joe Public”, it was the worst phone I had ever seen.

I too love my Bionic.. I too wish updates came faster.. Im running an ICS leak and that upgrade was almost like I just upgraded the hardware too.. In the past Ive gone w/ Motorola more than any other Manu, and will prob continue to do so under Google’s hands.. Thats unless build quality tanks, thats been one of the best things about my old Motos.. Even my OG Droid still works today w/ no cracks in the screen, few scuffs in the bezel but thats what I would expect when its fallen on concrete a few times.
