Video: Ubuntu For Android Full Demo

YouTube Preview Image

From reading the comments in our last post, it looks like there is a ton of excitement for the Ubuntu for Android announcement that will take place at this year’s MWC. This full video demo should give everyone a great look into how it will work and what to expect. Enjoy!

Cheers Tom!

Can’t watch this video on my flashless Chrome Beta…

    • psu

it’s a youtube video and my chrome beta plays youtube fine

  • joesred

    video removed?

  • Matthew Merrick

I’ve been saying google needed to integrate webtop into all android devices as soon as the merger went through. it has so much potential. now with this….

google, step up your game, or your competitors will use your own software to leave you in the dust. 😛

  • me

this will be cool,my lapdock 500 and bionic does this already though.

  • Shannon Kerr

Wow!  Can’t wait to get this on my Galaxy Nexus!!  Wonderful! My wife and I’ve been wanting to dump cable and just use netflix off my phone. Maybe that’s coming with this.

  • Havok

My droid razr already does this 🙂 I definitely use Webtop a lot.

  • Rickerbilly

    I want this now!

  • Kevdog

I dont do anything with my phone docked except charge it, and maybe adb once in a while to transfer files (however rsync has pretty much done away with this for me).  I bet this interface is laggy, and crashes a lot.  I guess if I wanted to use Ubuntu, well, I would use my Ubuntu laptop and not the phone.  Definitely a cool concept, but probably not very practical in my opinon — ok maybe the sms is cool, but that’s about it.

    • MKader17

Wow, You should change your user ID to Innovation Hitler

  • Joe

We always knew it would get to this point but you expect it to suck at first. It looks wonderful already. I can’t wait.

  • Jd

the idea is great, but definitely still missing the cohesiveness to make me give up my laptop experience.

  • Acniehaus04

    Now that is pretty awesome

  • MicroNix

+ Ubuntu for Android = Bliss

  • Jason

    Mind. Blown.

  • poeddroiduser

How does he own the Lorax when the film hasn’t even been released yet?

    • scooter1265

I know! I wanna see Act of Valor so bad!

    • PowerofPicture

      They’re trailers.

  • QtDL

    Flippin’ sweet.

  • Taglogical

This is SO so sweet. There is actually work done on this already for the Razr.  But the sweetness factor here can not be overstated.  Now that we all have monster phones there isn’t a single phone or phone feature that I’m more excited for than this!

Forget ICS on my Bionic, give me _this_

  • Illvision

Crazy Ish, this combined with the cloud will be the death of the desktop.

  • ajavgeek

This is very nice work….. looking forward to get it on my phone

  • Vaporware

I already have Unbutu running in place of webtop on my Razr and it actually works better than what they are showing. Check out the Eternity project for the Razr and you will see what AI mean. Actually we can go Gentoo or Ubuntu. The future is now if you own a Razr.

  • Nlateralus

Will there be like a boot to Android option for labtops?

  • ddevito

Isn’t a new feature for jelly bean the ability to dual-boot?

    *cough *cough*

    Just sayin

    • This is not dual booting this is a parallel, dual-boot is only one at a time

      • ddevito

Yes thanks for the OS tutorial :p

I was talking about a dual boot feature that is rumored to be in the next version of android.

        • Ohhh I thought you were saying that this must be using that, which it couldn’t be this is a different concept. lol

imo I don’t think though that dual-boot support is going to be added on a system level but you never know

          • ddevito

The rumor is that Jelly Bean will be able to boot into Chrome OS.

          • Yeah I have read  the rumors, most I saw were windows 8

        • IanKellogg

I don’t think you understand what dual booting is.

          • ddevito

I’m referring to the rumor of jellybean being able to boot into Chrome OS.

  • two words kick ass esp. i*hone

    • fanboy1974

This is one of those features that would make those iOS fanbois regret their purchase.  It would be hilarious if they got Mac OSX to run off a Android phone.  Steve would flip in his grave.

      • QtDL

That would be awesome. There probably is a nerd somewhere trying to make it work just for fun. 🙂

      • Jake

If processor manufacturers start going the way of OS makers, we could start seeing a convergence of compatibility between mobile and PC software… especially once Intel really gets its foot in the mobile processor business. After Windows 8 and Ubuntu-Android come out, OSX will really be the last major consumer OS to not run from mobile hardware.

      • AndroidUser00110001

Considering that OSX is built on Linux much the same way Ubuntu is then it is not that far fetched seeing that happen.

Apple did well with the iPad but could have blown everyone away more if it came with OSX.

        • UNIX*

        • NotRelevent

No. Linux and Unix…TWO completely different things.

  • Khg

    Amazing, the future is bright!

  • yaoshanle
  • Chances of this being a ROM addon? flash in CWM? 🙂

    • Its gonna be an app/docks it does not need to be a ROM addon

    • WickedToby741

Considering Ubuntu is all about open source, I’d say it’s a good bet. They said it just has to be embedded in the kernel, so no installing it as an afterthought, but custom ROMs should be a go hopefully.

  • oh man that is slick. i want that for sure.

  • fanboy1974

Please come out for the Galaxy Nexus.

  • socrates_johnson

This is cool, but I would rather Google just do something like this themselves…

    • I don’t see why you can’t dock a ICS phone (Galaxy Nexus for an example) into a tablet “dock” – and then have the phone turn into a tablet interface. Hopefully Google is working on something like this- and like wise an interface for desktop computers.

      • IFragU

sounds like you’re looking for the asus padfone

      • tjpeco

I’ve been pining for this feature since we saw the first leaked images of the Gnex from the side.

      • Anyone seen this yet? It’s barely a prototype, but what a freaking amazing device it will be!

        • jonny6pak

This is almost my dream device combo.  I would rather have a physical keyboard and undock the screen for tab use, but this cool none the less.

      • MKader17

Especially considering that all you have to do on the Galaxy nexus is change the build prop file to a certain density and it automatically goes into “tablet mode”. It is an unusable tablet mode because it crashes the onscreen buttons, but it doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility.

    • fanboy1974

Yes, I agree.  Only Google should makes this official in all phones that are capable.  Motorola had a very good idea but the momentum has really died off because it’s only found in Motorola capable phones.
Google could instantly fight toe to toe with Microsoft and Apple on the desktop front.  Every high end phone would sport a full desktop operating system and the best part is that it would be free. This could be the best thing to happen from the merger between Google and Moto from a user perspective.

      • socrates_johnson

I agree. That would be really great. I mean, the phone that replaces my Galaxy Nexus (hopefully in 2+ years) will easily be more powerful than the laptop I’m typing this on right now. I think a Google phone/desktop combo could really stir up the desktop scene.

    • ddevito

They are in JelluBean, boot into Chrome OS.

  • Jason Purp

The SMS integration is the best part. Other than that, not as awesome as I thought it’d be.

  • This is an awesome step towards what I’ve been waiting for.  The ability to do all the following while keeping your phone in your pocket:

1 – Use a tablet display and battery unit that is powered wirelessly by your phone
2 – Use a desktop monitor that is powered wirelessly by your phone
3 – Use a television display that is powered wirelessly by your phone
4 – Use other displays that are powered wirelessly by your phone

    • lamenting

Although, the phone has to be docked and not in your pocket, no?

  • Meister_Li

Irnoic that they would demonstrate something that needs to be baked into the rom on a motorola device. I guess they’re using the build-in Webtop of the Atrix somehow. Still, this is pretty cool. I can see it being useful some day!

    • BAoxymoron

you can fully unlock the atrix

  • Will this be an installable Android app?  Or will manufacturers/rom devs need to bake this in at the kernel level?

    • jathak

Based on the integration that they’re showing, it will probably have to be integrated into the rom, although it could be possible that it would only require a supplement install on top of a rom (still through a zip though)

    • MicroNix

How could it be kernel level?  That was an Atrix with a locked bootloader, no?  🙂

      • WickedToby741

The unlock tool got leaked for the Atrix. You can unlock the Atrix.

  • Brian Worhatch

Will this work for the Galaxy S2? Also will it work on a MacBook Pro?

    • MacBook Pro…?  Wut?

    • WickedToby741

No and no. It has to be baked into the ROM, so a custom ROM is a possibility if they open source it, but don’t expect it from Samsung. Also, this is meant to work on a display, so unless your Macbook has a video-in port, which I don’t think they do, it won’t work. You would need to use bluetooth peripherals too as the Mackbook keyboard and mouse wouldn’t be accessible.

      • Casey Megginson

If they distribute it they have to open source it as per the conditions of the Gnu GPLv2 and GPLv3 licenses that most things Linux are licensed with.

  • WickedToby741

I hope Motorola drops Webtop for this. Also: This + The Next Transformer = Awesome.

  • James Friedman

    game changer!

    • MicroNix

  • Lambo_21

    i want now haha

  • this is literally almost the same as webtop, and I bet just as laggy.

    • WickedToby741

Perhaps not on something like a Tegra 3. Imagine a Transformer 3 with this technology built in so that when you dock to the keyboard dock, it launches full desktop Ubuntu.

  • Awesome burnt pixel on that HP monitor.

    • Balls

      the call out!!

  • It would be pretty cool if you can use your phone as a trackpad. 😛

    • IFragU

      In webtop, you can.

  • Loudest mouse click I have ever heard in my life.

  • phaded

Forgot to add, throwing that onto the TV is best feature

  • Damn…I can see this being the future. Next up is a phone that clips into a tablet screen. Desktops will still be around for quite some time for things like Music Production and CAD. 😛 Can’t wait for Galaxy Nexus Support. 😀

    • Crappyalloy

ASUS Padfone, look it up. 😀

  • phaded

More excited for this than any quad core nonsense. That is some nice work.

    • Shaun.Ober

This will probably be targeted for the quad cores.

  • Sick Sick Sick is all I can say

  • sciroccohsd

    Can’t wait!

  • BurkeEdwina

best friend’s step-mother got paiđ $ 18662 past week. she is getting paid on the ĺaptop and bought a $ 364000 condo. Äll she did was get blessed and put to work the ćlues reported on this site => LazyCash5.ĆÒṀ

  • Regal

awesome the way he kills the video really quick when you can clearly see it dropping frames. hahah

    • sciwiz

Keep in mind this is running on the Atrix, with Tegra2. Not really known for its video decode capability.

      • PowerofPicture

That’s actually an Atrix 2 which has TI OMAP4. It can decode everything.

  • possomcrast1

so the ubuntu desktop interface was right off the phone? FUUUUUTTTUUURRRREEEE!!!!
