HTC Thunderbolt Update Starts Tonight – Fixes Reboot Issues, Is NOT Gingerbread

It has been almost 2 months since the HTC Thunderbolt received an update that started causing an overwhelming number of random reboots for users.  The last 6 or 7 weeks have been extremely frustrating to owners who jumped on this device thinking it would be kept up-to-date, bug free, and with the most current of Android operating systems.  So far that hasn’t necessarily been the case, but there may be a tiny light at the end of the tunnel.  An update has been readied by Verizon that should at least fix the reboot problems that you all have been experiencing – it’s not Gingerbread (Android 2.3) though.

It should be available to pull at 8PM Eastern and will bring a number of fixes, plus that desktop dock app that we are expecting to see when the Incredible 2 receives GB next week.  And hopefully this means that 2.3 is just around the corner.

*Note@TeamAndIRC is recommending that rooted users not accept the update.

More info here.

Cheers ___!

Well, I’ve just about had it… I held off rooting my TB waiting on this update. At this point I might as well root. All the talk about a $30 unlimited mobile hotspot for those of us who got “grandfathered” in with unlimited data plans is B.S.. The Skype I got from the terrific folks here at droid-life is no longer compatitable and the market version doesn’t support video chat on the Thunderbolt. No Netflix, No Gingerbread, NO NOTHING!!

I’ve never been more disappointed with a phone purchase in my life till this point. Time to breathe some new life into this thing… I should’ve held on to my Fascinate a bit longer… but Oh well… Thanks Droid-Life and the rest of development community for what y’all do cause at least we got options.

    • Dameon81

I totally agree!  I loved my TB at first, aside from the crappy battery life, and the minor GPS issues, but once they tried to “update it” the first time and screwed it up, I’ve wanted to smash it against the wall on a daily basis!  SERIOUSLY debating rooting now…..

    • Anonymous

Glad you guys are finally coming around!

Root your phones and you will never look back!

      The options are limitless!

    • DaveDoug

I’m on board with Hydro here, I’m at wits end.  Just went to the store to exchange mine because the power on button is sticking, and found out I’ll be receiving a previously owned phone (not a surprise) with a 90-day warranty instead of the year (thanks Verizon/HTC?  Because I’ve had a problem I get a reduced warranty as my reward?).  Q2 came and went, no G-Bread.  I’ve had about 6-8 reboots a week, which isn’t bad compared to others on here but it’s still enough to be extremely disappointing.

I also agree on HR’s other point, thanks go out to all of you for sharing your experiences and for getting info out to everybody.  I’ve had the T-bolt since St. Patty’s day, and I’ve had heartburn and quiet disappointment since about April.

  • Dameon81

Yea, so when I go to “Check New”, it searches like its doing something, and then goes back to the screen.  Nothing happens!  Any thoughts???

    • TB Sully

Getting the same here, since last night. However seems it’s not really an update I want if all it really does is take away hotspot. Then again I don’t want a surprise bill next month for using it

    • Tom Buckton

I am having the same issue.  I called support about 45 minutes ago and actually got someone who knows what they are doing.  Apparently if you are in the cue to get it pushed they are bouncing the update request.  They have disabled the ability to pull this update and are only allowing pushes for now.  All users are expected to get the update within a week.

    • Dameon81

Cool, Thanks for the info guys!  I’ll just keep trying to wait as patiently as possible!!!!

  • SpenceJT

” ‘Reduced’ number of device power-cycles and resets”  Reduced?  …not… …FIXED?!

    • http://twitter.com/Skitz_Marz Alex Gandero

it is fixed. it sjust to cover their ass just in case

  • Iphilluv

Got the update, goodbye free hotspot, hello to froyo again. No
gingerbread yet! FAIL! Nothing like having an out-dated phone but having
to paying more to use its capabilities, Thanks V u suck!

Of course via my Twitter account I get this:
VZWSupport @iphilluv We do not have a release date for Gingerbread. Once
available, it will be pushed to your device. Thank you. ^LA

Anyone at V know Q2 is over? HTC should ban them from selling their phones.

  • Rysdwn

can you still use hotspot for free after the update

    • Warlike1919

      no

  • Android Junkie

Ugh…I’m due for an upgrade in a couple weeks now and I was considering getting the TBOLT, but I’m really not so sure now.  I know I don’t want an i*hone, but what should I get?  I live in sort of a rural area and 4G may not be available here for quite a while so maybe and Inc 2?  I sold my OG Droid and got an Inc and I love it.  Both are great phones.

Any suggestions for my upgrade with VZW’s current line up of phones or should I just hold off for now and see if anything new comes out in the next month or two?

    • Dameon81

If 4gs not an issue, check out the DX2 and DI2, or look at the LG Revolution if you want the capability for 4G.  Plus the Droid 3 comes out Somewhere between this week and next, if its not out already

I have the T-Bolt and LOVE it and have never had a problem. It seems there are plenty that do, but I never base a decision on the incompetence of others.

I just got my daughter an Incredible 2 yesterday and it is a nice phone also. It works just like a mini T-Bolt except it is 3g and much slower. Side by side mine blows it away by far when downloading anything such as apps or watching youtube. Other than slow download speeds the phone is great and I’m sure you would like it. She chose that one pretty much for the smaller size… They also just came out with the ability to root the Inc2 so you can now get rid of the bloat!

Whatever phone you get you want to be able to root it and take control so you don’t become a complaining consumer that is sitting around waiting for a phone company to send you little updates here and there. You can clearly see what I mean by reading the countless posts in this thread with people clamoring for an update that simply adds more bloatware… lol

Good luck in whatever you decide.

    Ummmmmmmmm, FAIL!!!! Where is GIIIIINNNGGGEEEEERRRBBREEAAADDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jake P

Just unrooted and updated…looks solid so far

    • Mariobros27772

Did you get a tabbed app menu or a desktop cradle app? I can’t seem to find either… Or the ny times hookmark but that’s not a big deal

      • Androidinformant

Can’t see the cradle thing. Ur rite

        • Mariobros27772

Okay, but what about this view app menu being tabbed? Because I don’t see it

  • Jades_Blood

I was going to say that very same thing ( littlepecker ), isn’t this just away for them to
kill off your hotstop and not live up to the promise of GB.I currently can still use the Hotspot just fine even though it was said
to have ended 2 days ago. Unless I hear a valid reason to give this
update a try i’m going to have to call this one a miss I think. ~ Stock T-bolt.

  • Jake P

    Just unrooted, here goes…

  • Mariobros27772

Am I missing something? Ny times wasn’t added, and idk where this desktop app? Idk how to get the clock to rotate and the view apps isn’t tabbed, but I got everything else

  • Mnickel1988

well i had a leaked version of video skype, and now i have no video which makes skype pretty pointless now

  • http://twitter.com/samari711 samari711

This update finally fixed the GPS lock issue for me.  I haven’t played with it too much but I get instant lock now, even inside my house.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VNMZ67HA6QFEXTW5OXVSB4KDRM BillyBoy

Downloading the update in central IL now… I’ve had reboots aplenty.  I’ll look over at my phone and notice the white HTC “quietly brilliant” screen and then hear thunder a couple minutes later.  Hope this fixes it.  I still love HTC sense.  Wish the HTC Sensation were on Verizon.  At least when HTC Sense force closes on it the phone doesn’t reboot.

  • Blackhawk5177

here we go again round two

  • http://twitter.com/grilmasterweber Kurt Weber

i never had any reboots at all..

  • Anonymous

Nice way to kill the free hotspot and make you think you’re getting something. Oh wait, we did get some more VZ bloatware.

  • Mawurks5

No update here. In central Illinois. It’s 10pm. Just more free advertising for Verizon?

    • Mz.Thunderbolt[;

It is released by MEID#s. It probably just hasn’t reached yours yet. You should get it soon

  • Ler56

For those of you complaining about no GPS fix or Skype, you have to remember this update is based around the reboot issue. Getting Skype, gTalk, Sense 2.1, and major GPS fixes will come with Gingerbread 2.3.4 update. So stop acting as if this update should be the magical one that will fix everything. This update is 74MB. Verizon pushing more on this update could have really messed up your phone with the tremendous download size. So shut up and wait for Gingerbread

    • Mz.Thunderbolt[;

Totally with you, dude. People need to shut the hell up and stop freakin complaining. As long as this update fixes reboot issues I am happy. Gingerbread should take care of the other issues.

    • Sborden70

How about the assholes actually give us what the brochures says then huh? Another f u c k I n g lie from Verizon and we have the right to be pissed so stfu

  • Pcar1947

I think this is Typical Big WIreless company ( Not Just Verizon) . Staged Rollout!
    1) 1.13.605.7 Build Early this week
    2) 1.70.605 74MB Build this evening
    3) Gingerbread?

  • http://www.facebook.com/ken.obrien3 Ken O’Brien

    Translation:

This update does not fix anything, nor add any additional features, it just blocks Mobile Hotspot.

We knew you wouldn’t download it if you knew that’s all it was so we lied to you as usual, thank you for being so gullible.

  • Jspumphrey

Phone is now randomly viberating as is use it with new update. Yay verizons way of sayin go f yourself i guess.

  • Anonymous

Sorry, Verizon.  I’ll give up my hotspot when you give me Gingerbread

    • Rysdwn

that’s right man, i’ve been thinking wether or not to install the update but im not cuz that’s exactly what that update is for to block hotspot.

    • Verizon Rep

how about I give you a loaf of rye bread? because that’s all i have to offer.

      • Anonymous

As soon as you have more than a loaf of rye bread, contact me.  Then we can talk.  Till then, I’m not giving up my hotspot.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ken.obrien3 Ken O’Brien

oh nice and it blocks the use of the cracked Skype video

    • Thundercharge

      So pissed about this!!!

  • Anonymous

New update adds those stupid balance and global support team type contacts to people and doesnt allow you to delete them. Im pissed i dont want that cluttering my contacts.

  • scannerman

i’ve had the random reboots at least 2-3 times per day.  however my phone has been up over 55 hours now without a reboot and i have been doing nothing different.  it’s really strange.

  • Anonymous

Ok, so I just ran the update, and I know it took, because as soon as it rebooted it was telling me about My Verizon Mobile and I tried Mobile Hotspot and it no longer works for free. But, when I compare my Build Number and Baseband to what’s listed in the advertisement above, there is a discrepancy… Build Number is the same, but my Baseband is different. Any ideas on that?

    • Anonymous

I also don’t have tabs in my app tray. What’s up with that?

  • Anonymous

my build number is 1.70.605.0 baseband 1.39.00.0627r 0.01.69.0625r
build number same as above baseband: mine is clearly different ??? what gives VZW

  • Adam Taylor

There’s still no update for me.  I tried switching to CDMA and rebooting and it still doesn’t have anything.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ken.obrien3 Ken O’Brien

Well installed the update, hopefully it will address the problems at least, but…

Am I the only one that has had severe battery problems since the update, my phone just went from 78% to 16% in a half hour, while it was just sitting on my desk doing nothing.

  • Anonymous

my build number changed but my base band is different then what it says on that pdf. Whats the deal? also no tabbed app drawer ? plus the update failed 3 times before it actually completed. I wonder if they made last minute changes???

  • Cory

To anyone who had a screen lock password, you will probably think that it stopped working. To fix it you have to go into Settings, then Security, and click on “Lock phone after” then change it back to whatever your previous setting was to fix it

  • Sborden70

I tried getting the update and kept getting no updates found, I switched to cdma only, rebooted and clicked on the update and there it was. So far I haven’t noticed anything different, no sense update, only Verizon crapware

  • Blackthurt33n

This thing is a f’ng THUNDERTURD!

  • Anonymous

I downloaded and installed the update but now i can not get a 3g signal. It only works when i hit the sync all or check for updates.

  • Cory

The new 3G thing looks so stupid

  • Russosaur

HELP!!! My bolt goes to the check update screen and then the little screen goes away and it wont check for updates!!! PLEASE ANYONE HAVE THIS PROBLEM OR CAN FIX IT WITHOUT ROOTING?

    • Warlike1919

I am having the same problem , i dont know what the heck going on there

  • Thundercharge

I was wondering if anyone who updated and was experiencing problems with password lock? I had a pin before and now it doesn’t seem to work even when I created a new pin for the unlock screen…

    • Cory

this is f**king ridiculous. Im getting the same problem. I just re-setup my screen lock password and its as if i never set one up. It won’t keep a password. im getting kinda pissed at htc right now

    • Cory

ok you just have to change the thing back to say “lock phone immediately” because when you click off it changes the setting to 15 min

      • Thundercharge

Thanks, I’ll have to try that.

  • Ryanstraub84

I click the check new and the screen says that it’s searching for new then goes away… what do i do to get it to download?

    • Anonymous

Try rebooting your phone and then check for the update again afterward. If it still doesn’t do anything don’t worry too much… at some point soon Verizon will push the update to you if you haven’t already pulled it yourself.

  • Efballa32

When I click check new statues and press download, the update goes to about 15 percent and says server not availabe???

  • Diddy11

I called Verizon and they replaced my tb no questions asked. I have no problems yet. I noticed under the battery cover a green sticker that reads void. Under my old tb I’m sending back, it’s black. Anyone have the same thing going on theirs.

    • guest

      same thing with my replacement

    • http://www.facebook.com/ridoz419 Jerrod Schultz

Ya… I have it and still no update for me…

  • Chris

Can anyone confirm whether or not the rebooting is fixed?

  • GEOVENTO7

    UPDATING AS WE SPEAK

  • Vonsym

    not working for me….

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QMXI75OUCPP5P43P7ZMB4JRFRI Alex

Mine rebooted halfway through the download.  Now I gotta restart.  Sweet.

  • Tboltuser

I did the full RUU a few weeks ago for the OTA that was never released.  So far I am not being offered the new OTA.  Wondering if I am going to have to load the full RUU again for this current release.  Anyone out there on BB 1.39.00.0508w, Build 1.66.605.2 able to get the OTA update?

    • Nycqueen73

That is the build that I have and Im not able to get the update either

      • Tboltuser

Mine doesn’t respond with no new update, pop up just disappears

        • Nycqueen73

Im beginning to wonder if I will even be able to get any of the OTA updates since I downloaded the leaked MR2… If anyone knows of a site where I can get GB, please let me know… Im to a point that Im about to run this phone over with my car…

          • Tboltuser

I’ll give it a few days, not really worried about it.  Did your experience improve with the leak?  I am stock, unrooted, and honestly I don’t need this update.  Never get reboots and lock GPS in 1-2 seconds.

          • Nycqueen73

The phone does work much better with the leak but I did notice a few things. For some reason, my HBOGO wasnt working nor would it even download to the phone. Also, Facebook for HTC Sense doesnt work. But other than that, the phone works great. Haven’t seen a single reboot..

    • WHITE POWER

try turning on 1x it worked for me

      • Nycqueen73

Tried it… Didnt work either.. Still saying no new software update

    • Anonymous

I don’t understand why anyone that rooted and got rid of all this nonsense would want to take and update to take themselves backwards.

  • michael

    doesnt even work

  • Nycqueen73

No New Software Update Available.. Figures!!!!!
