Tuesday Poll: Reaction to the Google Play Rebranding of the Android Market?

With a big renaming campaign taking place today from Google, there have been a lot of people who have voiced their opinions over the new Google Play name. Google’s move for a name change is still being dissected and analyzed for meaning, but we know that Google must have a good reason behind it. Was it a strategic move against competitors or was it to satisfy the media industries (read: music industry disappointment) that have invested a ton of money into making their content sell? Let us know what you think of the new name down below and if it was a good move by Google.

Do you like the renaming of the Android Market to Google Play?

Stupid name change with no warning to users?

This is just an early April fools joke, right?

    • Guest

What type of “warning” would you have liked?  You don’t “vote” on what Google does.  You FOLLOW what Google does.

      • MKader17

Umm, ya know. Generally companies announce anything of importance before they happen?

I would say a complete name change of an entire app ecosystem is important enough.

  • MKader17

They should have went something like Cloud Market, Google Market, heck even just “The Cloud”. Google wants to push cloud computing apps on Chrome OS. It would make a lot of sense to “dowload an app from the cloud” for use on your phone at any time.

Google Play sounds like a perfect name for the Music, Movie and Book service. It’s a terrible name for the sale of applications.

  • Sven Enterlein

When I go to the Google Play website and want to select an option it really says “Play with…” Why oh why??? Can’t I “read” a book or “listen” to music, “use” an app anymore? Do I have to _play_ with it now??!?!? I’m not 12 any more.

  • Robbie Gerling

    Where’s the WTF! voting option?

  • G_mann312

I dont like it and hope they change it back or something that more sense!

  • Havoc70

Don’t really care about the name too much, although “play” in everything is kind of silly.  Just keep on giving out the deals =)

  • fanboy1974

How about change the app return window. I could care less about the name.

  • richardsonadm

I don’t care for the name change, but I don’t like Google Play Music or Google Play Books. This is starting to sound like Windows Media Player, Windows Media Audio, WIndows Media Video.

    Just keep it simple.

    • Darthseph23

This is a bad analogy. One is an application, the other two are file types with specific encoding properties.

I agree that Google Play Books is silly though.  I’m surprised they pushed the name onto applications.  I figured the market would get the rebranding, not the entire suite.  That one caught me off-guard.

  • fvqu

I wouldn’t mind it as much if they didn’t rebrand the music and books apps and change the icons

  • Trophynuts

i think the name change is stupid and childish.

  • http://twitter.com/BlackTaxi2d Henry S

as long as it comes with lower prices, who can complain ?

  • Stewie

Same as Hank, no change in functionality, so …. I do see they didnt change the name in the app drawer, its still market …

  • http://www.facebook.com/mroberte Robert Evans

I like the logo, far more universal.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=25001493 Hank Godwin

Again, who cares what the name is as long as the product works (and is free at that)?

    Not I.

  • http://www.getintonursing.com/ Jon

so many good games for $.49 cents today

  • http://www.hammertechnologies.net/ Chase Johnson

Play is stupid name, even after they change it, people will still call it the Market.

  • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

Unlike an iPhone fan, I actually welcome change and improvement.

    • http://www.hammertechnologies.net/ Chase Johnson

      Improvement? HAHAHAHAHAHA good one.

    • Tabe

      Is there an improvement?

  • red014

Should’ve gone with “Google Market”.  I liked the market moniker.

    • http://twitter.com/JohnnyACE562 GRAND MASTER SEN$Ei {{-_-}}™

       Google Play Market? Idk…this is all just a huge mess now. {{-_-}}

  • EC8CH

Guess this makes us all Google Playas

  • http://twitter.com/MikesOnline Mike James

I like it because, I got some great deals
    Google Play Deals !

  • Matthew Rosidivito

I think it wil still be called “The App Store” no matter what.

    • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

You must hang out with a bunch of iPhone people.  None of my Android using friends call it “The App Store”.  We all call it the Market.

      • Matthew Rosidivito

Not so much iPhone people as much as people who aren’t android freaks like us. “App Store” was mainstream long before “Market” and people, regardless of their device, will generally call all of them “App Store” (In my exp, anyway.)

I tried pushing the official name, but I really don’t care enough, and neither do they.

  • redbar0n11

“Oh, hey, that’s a neat app!”
–”Yeah, I just downloaded it from the Play…”
    “…are you high?”
    –”No!? WTF??”
“You downloaded it from… the ‘Play’?”
    –”Yes. That’s what I said.”
“Are we speaking the same language here? Or did I get beat with the stupid stick? Cuz I have no clue what the F*#K you’re talking about!”
–”The. Play. PLAY! P-L-A-Y! THERE I SPELLED IT OUT FOR YOU! GOT IT NOW? UNDERSTAND?”
“No. I realllllly don’t understand. Wanna know why?”
    –”Sure. Wh–”
“BECAUSE THAT MAKES NO F*#KING SENSE! THAT’S WHY!”

    • Jason Purp

How did this get to be the top comment?

      • John

        Good f’in question!

      • redbar0n11

Same logic as how the Market is now the Play… lol

    • http://www.facebook.com/fallen57chevy Justin Halcomb

“Oh, hey that’s a neat app!”
–”Yeah, I just downloaded it from the Play…”
      “…the Play?… what’s that?”
“It’s the name for the Android Market”
      … (True story)

  • Ninjapig123

I think a name like “Google Download” would be better. Then it tells users to “Download” apps instead of “play” them.

    • 1TallTXn

Who days Google doesn’t want all the apps/books/music/video to live in the proverbial cloud and you just pay to access them?

  • EC8CH

“Download the app from iTunes or…. Google Play”

Now they both sound equally stupid.

  • Imitation

Just got a text from Verizon stating this…came here. LOL

  • Alex

Its hard to sound intelligent when your directing someone to go to “google play”.  sounds like its a game and my phone is just google gameboy.

Also, this is the opposite of simple.  you cant say go to the app market, now its go to google play.  how is someone who knows nothing about android going to pick up a phone and notice that an app called google play is where applications are bought.

  • fauxshizzl

It won’t change the fact I will always refer to it as the “Android Market,” but it sounds a little childish. It sounds like a place I would go to get apps made safe for my children.

  • EvanTheGamer

    No, I don’t like it.

And that is all I’m gonna say about that.

  • Tabe

I feel like “Google Play” is a little too cutesy and doesn’t encompass the more serious offerings (ie, business/productive apps, books…) well.

  • http://ronoffringa.wordpress.com Ron Offringa

    I don’t play books…

    • Jason Purp

       I barely read them

      • EC8CH

        Stephen Colbert approves this message.

  • jimbob

Doesn’t matter, I’ll still call it the Market.

    • jathak

Definitely. And I’m not publishing my apps to the Play Store. I’m publishing them to the Android Market.

  • https://twitter.com/#!/acpleus Andrew Pleus

I agree with those that don’t care for the naming scheme.  I like the concept that they are trying to unify and rebrand all the aspects of their online media consumption portals.  But Play just doesn’t work so well for Books and Apps.  Why not just rename it the “Google Marketplace.”  In my opinion that would have still been just as unifying and would have been familiar enough that it wouldn’t sound so cheesy.  I predict it will change again in another 6 months.

    • Larizard

Marketplace is what Microsoft calls the Window App Store.

  • ragnarok180

Frankly I hate it… “Google Play” doesn’t convey a sense of categorization. With “market” in the name, you get the general idea of what to expect when you go there. By that same token, a rose by any other name smells just as sweet baby

    • http://twitter.com/ToysSamurai Toys Samurai

I hate it, too. For one, picking a “verb” is a bad choice, especially when that word has a totally different meaning when it’s used as a “noun”. Secondly, everyone knows that a Market is for buying stuffs, I’ve never heard anyone associating the word “Play” with buying things — I am not saying you can’t change people’s perception, but to do so, a lot of efforts have to be put in there to make that happens. Why bother?

  • Rob rollings

First, I don’t know why Google couldn’t just rebrand it “Google Market”. I’m totally fine with that. It easily would’ve made it recognizable across different platforms, like phone, tablet and TV.

Second, I love how the top vote is for “Meh, Ill get used to it”!

  • Yo_Droid

This helps sort the various Google apps together.  I had a hard time finding them and am glad to see them under the Google nameplate now.  This is a welcome change.

    • Yo_Droid

Spoke too soon – they don’t sort under “Google” but rather under “Play”.  Still helps to find them.

      • moelsen8

books, movies, music, and the market (bleh) shouldn’t be found in the “P” section of my app drawer.  it’s counter intuitive.

  • EC8CH

Honestly I liked “Market” because it has a community feel to it as apposed to the colder feel that “Store” has for apple.  Kind of like a farmer’s market compared to a store like Wal-Mart.  Which I though fit the android community well as it is open source.

Adding Play is just extra garbage in the name that sounds silly.

Google Market would have been simpler and less work.

    • RedPandaAlex

I’m guessing someone in marketing decided it should sound like a place to have fun rather than a place to spend money.

      • EC8CH

        Market is to spending money

as Marketing is to wasting money
        :-P

        • Noyfb

This sounds like they are trying to market it to children
Sounds like some type of re-branding term that sony or xbox would use, but sony just closed their playstaion network and made it a part of sony now from all the hacks to it by lolz hacker group. They should of tested the name to consumers that use it first with polls and market testing.  Anyway I hate it.
If it ain’t broke, Don’t fix it!

    • jathak

Definitely. A rebrand to Google Market would make sense, because it has more than just apps now. Play makes no sense.

  • HuskerHog

    I don’t see much difference.

  • Michael_NM

I don’t like the name. It’s a bit too cutsy for me. I do like the deals though and ultimately, I don’t really care much what they call it.

  • RedPandaAlex

    And, the “meh”s have it.

  • Sporttster

I swear, who comes up with these stupid names? Guess it could be worse….somehow….

    • Jason Purp

      “Google N*gger Nazi C*nt F*ck Sh*t F*ggot”

That’s how it could be worse

      • moelsen8

i just laughed loud enough for the whole office to hear.  hahahaha

        • Justin M

          RE-POST! RE-POST! RE-POST!

        • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7Pn1-980zw TheAndroid1

          What did it say?

          • EC8CH

            combination of slurs for

            African Americans
Germans during the middle of the 20th century
            Homosexuals
            etc

all woven together and propped up by the bookends Google and Play.

          • moelsen8

it was pretty funny in how random it was.

“that’s how it could be worse”  hahaha

          • Jason Purp

But I censored the first vowels of each word so that made it okay.

        • Jason Purp

lol @ people flagging it and Kellex deleting it.

  • Jeepguy04

Of course I’d rather it be the Android Market. But seeing as Google wants to sell music and movies and books to everybody and not just Android users, I think it was the smart move for them to make. So non android users realize that they can buy media content from there as well.

  • Paul

Don’t like it at all. The logo is alright, I guess. But the name doesn’t sound right. Why not just Google Market?

  • Benleonard79

I dont mind the concept…but name and icons have to go

  • EC8CH

Change the name of Google +

    to

    Google Play Withyourself

    • jathak

It’s perfect, because no one else in on Google Plus so it’s just yourself anyway

      • EC8CH

Yes… the humor of this joke exists on multiple levels.

      • http://quiklives.tumblr.com quiklives

I can’t understand why people keep saying this. My G+ is full of interesting, thoughtful content that scrolls by almost faster than I can keep up.

  • sc0rch3d

the music and app deals beat the pants off itunes…

  • EC8CH

please tell me they didn’t do this just to use the corny phase:

    “Play of the Day”

    • Kyle Fullmer

Oh god, you better be wrong or this is worse than anyone thought.

    • Jason Naylor

The market on my nexus now says “25 cent play of the day”

      • EC8CH

Yeah… the “play” jokes are all over the site.

        Play Guitar
        Play HipHop
        Play Detective (books)

I can see how some one thought this would be cool, but it’s gonna get old fast.

  • Sqube

I still don’t understand how you play a book. I’ll roll with it, though. It’s whatever to me.

    • Matthew Rosidivito

Since we’re getting technical, how exactly does one “roll with it”?

On a serious note, yeah, I couldn’t care any less.

  • http://twitter.com/sitrick2 Oh, you know.

Shouldn’t “I don’t really care” be an option?

  • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

I think Market was fine so long as they continued to fully integrate their services, which I saw happening already in ICS. I don’t understand why it needed re-branding to ‘play’.

    • http://www.facebook.com/fallen57chevy Justin Halcomb

Probably for the casuals something catchy to ‘catch’ them. I think it will fit and it may gets some chuckles here and there

  • EC8CH

I’m astonished 4 people voted they liked it before I got the first negative vote in.
