Samsung Galaxy Nexus vs. Original Motorola DROID

When one of our readers requested that we run a comparison of the original Motorola DROID to the brand new Samsung Galaxy Nexus, we thought, “What a fantastic idea.” With the amount of people that have been hanging on to their OG for dear life with hopes that something of this magnitude would arrive, this is sure to help make the transition much easier. Or at the very least, show the world how far we have come in 2 short years. Remember when the DROID was about as top-of-the-line as you could get? Well folks, the Galaxy Nexus is where it’s at now – we cannot wait for long time OG owners to experience next-gen technology like this. When Verizon does finally release it (end of next week looking better by the minute), we have a feeling that your mind will be blown.

Just for fun, here is a comparison of specs:

So what do have for differences? How about another inch added to the screen, about 70 extra pixels per inch, a front camera, full 1080p video recording, a dual-core processor clocked at over double the speed, quadruple the RAM, and 4G LTE. Talk about an evolution.

HEY, how does he still have the gold on his camera button, hahah he must have had it repainted…. I miss my OG Droid.

Old news to have a new Galaxy Nexus to many… but I finally gave up and upgraded my wife and I from our old Moto Droids to brand shiny new Nexus machines last night.  What a great phone.  I am pretty happy I held out for another Google phone.  I looked at so many phones over the last 2 years with all those skins and “added features”.  Bah!  I sat down and unlocked and rooted mine today.  I will leave the wife’s alone as she sticks to phone calls, texts and some games.  Now… 2 more years to go before my next phone.  :-)

OG Droid gets points for out of the box Facebook contacts sync and user music can be set as ringtone.  Need apps for it on Galaxy nexus.

i wish you had compared to the Bionic, that would be more like Apples to Apples.

This article made my day.  Thanks DL

That awkward moment when you see the Nexus running on AT&T, before Verizon even ships their “exclusive” release.

    OG still better.

One feels solid and the other cheap plastic.

Are we talking cameras or phones? When I want to take lasting pictures I fire up my 40D and what ever lens I need. I consider the camera in the phone to be just that (a phone with a camera). For everlasting pictures I still relay on my good old canon.
Lets use the camera in the phone as it is intended to be A PHONE WITH A CAMERA

All I want to do is take my OG droid, go to a big empty parking lot, and throw the dang thing as high up in the air as I can.

I miss my OG Droid. I might have to fix the screen and get it going again. I wish it were easier to switch between phones on Verizon.

easier than dialing *228 inputting the phone number to program wait 2 minutes and restart the phone?

I loved my OG Droid and i still have it. I dropped my screen last august, august of 2010 and cracked it and now it is a full spiderweb but still works great. The thing is a tank. I love it. and i am going to be a little sad to retire it for the nexus.

  • Iceywyte2781

To me in my opinion. The original droid. Phone is a tank and the Galaxy Nexus don’t. Have shit. On the original. Android tbe onlhy thing. The. Nexus has on the. Awesome specs. The Camera. Fail.

I’ve been waaiting with my OG Droid. No phone from any carrier has appealed to my eye until I saw the Nexus. Sticking with Samsung after this so I don’t have to buy so many batteries.

I just got some exciting news. I currently have a 3G Droid X. I really want the 4G Galaxy Nexus. I was under the impression that if I purchased the Nexus, or any other 4G phone, that I would lose my existing UNLIMITED data plan. This is not the case. I just got off the phone with Verizon, and they said that we are all grandfathered in with the unlimited plan. Upgrading to a 4G phone doesn’t cause the unlimited to end, AND you would be getting that data at the 4G speed, off the 4G network. I’m ready to preorder my Nexus now. yay.

A lot of people see a keyboard as the most important feature. It would be a lot harder to get all my work emails done without a keyboard and I would trade hexacore for a decent keyboard.

    • Monty Waggoner

A decent keyboard are the key words. The hardware keyboard on my OG droid was absolutely worthless. Those flat buttons were like the touchscreen, you couldn’t feel if you were even on the right key.

doesn’t even compare – OG droid any day!

My OG is begging to be replaced.  It is getting so dysfunction, I hit the screen today.

Oh my god the OG Droid sounds awful.

I had nothing but memory problems and redraws going into any application on every Gingerbread rom I tried.  Didn’t try GPA though.  PE 6 ran the best but still slowed to a crawl at times.

    • Dominick DeVito

Seriously, no joke – GPA19 runs great. Of course I have LauncherPo on top but who doesn’t? The combo of the two makes for the best experience I’ve had with my OG. If the G-Nex wasn’t coming out I could hold out another 6 months easily.

Previous versions (16,17) were slightly buggy. But 19 is awesome. Moto should hire Pete Alfonso.

  • Anonymous

The D4 has a removable battery, actually, and its camera is better than the Galaxy Nexus’.

    • Dominick DeVito

Camera is better based on what exactly?

      • Anonymous

        Disqus blows.

Camera is better based on actual picture samples.

        • Dominick DeVito

Fair enough – haven’t seen the D4′s shutter speed, but I’d honestly sacrifice a smidgen of quality for raw speed, particularly on a phone (yes, I know it’s prob more from ICS than the hardware).

  • Anonymous

Go back to Froyo, Gingerbread doesn’t run well on the Droid.  I would also suggest Project Elite 4.2.

    • Dominick DeVito

2.3.7 (GPA 19 from Pete Alfonso) runs great on my OG. Gingerbread is way better than Froyo.

      Love PE on my OG.

      OG: PowerVR SGX530

      G-Nex: PowerVR SGX540

  • Miss Nitpicker

So your telling me the 5mp camera on the GNEX is no better than the crappy camera on my OG Droid?

    • http://twitter.com/Rocko9999 Rocko Smith

MP is only and I repeat only a measurement of the largest size picture the camera can take. It has 0 to do with quality. Sensor, optics, shutter speed, processing are what determine the picture quality.

can we get that wallpaper on the nexus?

still have my OD, was thinking about trying an iphone, but when it came out and it wasnt 4g, that was a deal breaker for me,thinking hard about the Nexus,if it ever comes out

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jim-Mcclain/1463591684 Jim Mcclain

the 2g plan, but they are running a special , 4 gig for the 2 gig price

  • AeonFrog

I’m not too familiar with Verizon’s data plans. If I upgrade my OG droid to a Galaxy Nexus, will I still have my unlimited data plan or will I be forced to use the 2GB plan?

    • Dominick DeVito

No, you will still retain your unlimited data plan

    • Monty Waggoner

I was able to keep my unlimited when I got the Droid Charge. You can keep it forever if you just don’t change plans.

Seeing these pics with the OG in it,  I feel like the Galaxy Nexus isn’t as humongous as I once thought it was going to be.

The PPI on the Droid is wrong. It’s not 240 but 265. (854^2+480^2)^.5/3.7 = 264.77
