Official DROID 4 Specs, It’s Definitely a Big RAZR With a Keyboard and 4G LTE

The DROID 4 is upon us whether we are ready for it or not. The first pictures of it popped up a few weeks ago followed by signs pointing to it arriving on December 8. We also got confirmation that training has started for some Verizon shops, along with this set of official specs. Who knew we would see it so soon?

The D4 will have a 4″ screen (LCD or AMOLED?), 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, DROID RAZR styling, 5-row slideout keyboard, 4G LTE, front camera for video chatting and an 8MP rear camera. This could be the DROID that many of you have been waiting for. The Stratosphere had LTE and a keyboard, but this phone has top of the line specs to go with them.

On a related note, thoughts on the tool needed to remove the back cover? It doesn’t have a removable battery, but the cover can be removed using that circular tool pictured above, so that you can insert a SIM and SD card.

Buying?

Cheers ___!

no super AMOLED screen? why put it in the razr but not the D4.

those qHD screens are horrible. I dont mind the battery, as long as it is a big battery I could care less if I could take it out.

I am a fan of the backlit keyboard, that looks real nice.

I dont know why someone doesnt make a phone with a huge hard drive (or flash) on it.  If someone made a android phone with like a 60gb flash drive on it, I would for sure get it, put all my music and movies on there no problem. could get a SD card sure, but having it already there would be a great way to bring over the iphone crowd.

    • Blix

That’s why they have the MotoCast app, so you can access everything off of your PC so you don’t HAVE to have all of that on your phone.

back-lit keyboard? motorola continues to out-due themselves and everyone else with there hardware

    • Anonymous

      And their software is underdeveloped.

      • Anonymous

We’re in 2011 now, not 2010; their software has changed a great deal in the last year. Haters gonna hate.

        • Anonymous

Dude, I own a D3 which was released mid 2011.  I know exactly all about their crappy camera software that can’t get out of its own way on a DUAL CORE device to take a picture in anything less than 7 seconds.  I know all about the lag.  Quit coming off like I’m making this stuff up.  This is my second Motorola smart phone.  I’m just calling it like I’m seeing it.  Sorry if that upsets the delicate flower in you.

he’s a troll that trolls the site looking for anyone that doesn’t like moto stuff so he can pick a fight and get in a pissing match with them. he’s stuck with that turd of a phone a bionic and he’s out here trying to justify his purchase.  too bad it is a utter piece of shitt phone.

Just like you’ll be spewing your love for dicks you pathetic 12 year old fairy.

          • Anonymous

Dumb little fanboy having a laugh?  Doesn’t change the fact that you’re a moron.

          • Anonymous

Funny, I don’t have any magical lag on mine, imagine that.  Maybe it has something to do with your D3′s 512 MB ram?  You know, something like that can cause redraws after playing games or other resource heavy apps.  The camera app, while admittedly not that great, does not make the software.

          • MicroNix

I use the entire phone and its features.  And I expect them all to work as advertised.  Yeah, imagine that, I purchased a product and expect it all to work!  What a concept!!!

          • Anonymous

So you find fault in the camera and…..nothing else. Oh yeah, it “lags”, good job picking a future proof phone with 512 MBs ram if you wanted to do heavy multitasking. I find people will find fault with anything, no matter how minute; it could be that the phone takes 10 seconds longer to boot and people will still whine.

          • Anonymous

Yes I find fault in the camera.  What is in the first 5 specs of any smart phone reporting?  The camera.  Now maybe people like you that live in mom’s basement don’t need, want or care about the camera.  That’s fine.  But those that have families are using these to replace having to haul around dedicated cameras and its kind of a bigger deal.  Its part of the smart phone package and should work correctly.  It just took me 18 seconds to launch the camera and take a picture.  That is pure crap.  Maybe your Bionic doesn’t have that issue.  GOOD FOR YOU.  Now go have your cookie.

          • Anonymous

Oh a mom’s basement joke, real original. Oh that’s right, you have no argument so resort to insults!  Nope, I don’t have that issue, could it be that your exaggerating the 18 seconds? Hmmm. Could it be you’re another one of those entitlement f*cks who won’t be satisfied with anything less than “zero shutter lag” because something else has that now, despite the fact that it’s still a shitty camera phone?

          • Anonymous

I am only comparing my D3 to my D1.  When a 2 year old phone outperforms a newer supposedly more powerful phone in an area or more, then yes, I complain about it.  And at least I have legit complaints unlike the endless blathering you do here.

You might want to seek anger management help.  Seriously…

          • Anonymous

You might want to wake the f*ck up and see what’s going on here. You know what the difference is between your Droid 3 and my Bionic other than the keyboard? Half the ram and LTE. You know what, my Bionic is ridiculously faster than my old Droid so I find it hard to believe your Droid is faster than your D3 with half the ram still and a processor that’s 65% slower.

  • Craig

At least it looks to be a global phone but I’m sure that Verizon will lock it down. The specs don’t look bad except for the weight. It’s more than 50% heavier than the Galaxy S2 or RAZR. Sorry Verizon, I’m not buying any more locked phones.

    • http://thisisjohncoffey.com GRAND MASTER SEN$Ei {{-_-}}™

      If it’s locked, I’ll bear. I think Google might open up Moto once they buy it. {{-_-}}

  • STiK

I’m donating my D3 to the Devs and getting the D4 :)

    • Anonymous

I’m definitely getting a D4.  This is the phone I’ve been waiting for since July, when I became eligible for an upgrade…

  • Alan

Sucks about the non-removable battery but I’m definitely getting the D4.

    • http://profiles.google.com/amtrombley89 amtrombley89

According to the picture above, the back is removable to get to the SD and SIM. Perhaps the battery is removable after all?

      • Marc

I hope you’re right about the replaceable battery.

        • Brennan Hall

I don’t want to kill your hopes, but if you look at what comes “In The Box”, a battery is not mentioned, leading me to believe that it is not removable.

        • Anonymous

I hope the battery is replaceable, but all the reports I’ve heard say otherwise…

          • ler56

i think the SD and LTE card slots are on the side of the phone (protected by the back cover). i dont think the battery is removable. Motorola has chosen that path with the Droid RAZR, so it wouldnt be a shocker if they did the same to this phone as well. I think Motorola is implementing the non-removable battery characteristic to all their new phones – to make them thinner and lighter (thats a main reason they achieved such a slim and light profile for the Droid RAZR)

          • Anonymous

But the battery on a Razr is technically removable. It’s not hardwired in and look to be removed like and other battery. If its the same on the D4 and you can take the back off then it should be removable.

          • CapnShiner

Look at where the line points for the SIM slot. I highly doubt it would load that far into the phone from a side slot. I’m pretty sure the cover has to be removed to get to the SIM and SD slots. At least you won’t have to remove the battery to get to the SD card, like my Droid X, if the battery is non-removable.

      • Calculatorwatch

That’s pretty ridiculous if it isn’t removable. I’ll bet you can see the battery when you take off the cover but it’s glued in or something.

        • Tyler

I wouldn’t put it past Motorola, but with the need for a tool, they aren’t expecting you to be removing the battery cover too often. Who’s going to want to carry a tool around with them?

          • Anonymous

the tool is a glorified paper clip. the back cover just takes a lot of pressure to get the cover off.there is a dimple that pops into a hole to keep the cover on tight.

          • Rodge

I believe the key fits into a slot on the back of the phone.

        • Litmus

Hopefully with the smaller screen, it’ll have good battery life.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Zach-Saville/100000675868459 Zach Saville

why would you need a removable battery? I might get the D4 but I like the 3.5″ screen on my iPhone 4S.

          • Joel Freedman

Because I keep a spare battery with me and in the event(which isn’t that rare) of my battery running low, I can swap the battery and use an external charger to recharge it at my convinience.  This is an important feature to me.

          • http://www.facebook.com/hazydave Dave Haynie

There are two reasons you need a removable battery.

One is simple: a single battery doesn’t necessarily last all day in heavy use. Much less a long weekend when you have no access to alternative power. Maybe not everyone needs this, but I have, on multiple occasions.

Second one: if you are a power user, and run your battery down every day, it’ll be lucky to last out a single year without being near death, much less two years. The typical Li-Poly is good for 300-500 full charge-discharge cycles. The good thing about Li-Poly (and actually NiMh, but very much not the ancient NiCAD) is that short cycles do extend the life of the battery — that’s how Hybrid Cars go 200,000+ miles without killing the traction battery pack.

So if you’re a casual user, or have chargers at work, in the car, etc. this one isn’t an issue. But if you run your phone down every day, expect to have to send it back to Motorola for a battery swap. Apple at least made this easy, thanks to Apple stores being fairly common for the inevitable battery swap. But does ANYONE really expect Motorola to handle this well?

          • Someone123

A good old battery pull every once in a while is useful.

    • StackOverflow

I’ll be getting the D4 also. Keyboard shortcuts in office apps and the browser are very useful. It’s great for terminals like SSHing into my Linux boxes. You really need the entire screen for that. I often use the go to the end or start of a line keyboard shortcuts for long commands or text entries.

    • Terence

      $199?

    • Somedude

No Friggin’ way I’m buying a phone without a removable battery.

  • Rw-1

With all this time, it should have been more ICS ready, plain and simple. But the nexus will be here shortly, and my time with moto will end.

  • Anonymous

When the hell will they make a top of the line phone with a qwerty and no crapware? Nexus has me sold, except for lack of keyboard. D4 has me sold, except for blur, moto/verizon crapware. Sigh.

    • Blix

Is the bloatware really that bad? I’ve only had the D1 so I’ve never had to experience it, plus I’m rooted and ROMed anyway. I actually was leaning TOWARD the Razr for the MotoCast and Smart Actions.

      • Anonymous

        Pretty much…

    • Anonymous

If you hate Blur, you can download Launcher Pro or any of the other custom launchers.  If you hate the crapware, you can delete or hide all of it.

I would have loved to see a Nexus with a good QWERTY keyboard.  Samsung and Google seriously missed a great opportunity there.  But the Droid 4 is the next best thing, and I will be getting one…

      • Anonymous

Thanks, captain obvious. As if we all aren’t DroidLife readers. Ive been doing those things since blur was introduced on the D2. However, this is still a fundamentally flawed approach. In essence, youre adding more software to mask the other software you dont like. Eventually things slow down and it runs like crap. Even as i type this, i’m frustrated by lag.

I agree with you, the nexus line needs a qwerty monster at some point. I dont understand why everyone is so touchscreen crazy. Does the majority of the market not want physical keyboards because it adds bulk? Does everyone remember Zack Morris Motorolas? Dont you think a couple milimeters of extra thickness is a good compromise for having a real keyboard at your disposal for properly trolling internet forums while you’re on the toilet?

        Double sigh.

  • Dominick DeVito

People still want a physical keyboard? I’m learning that I guess they do indeed. Amazing

    • Anonymous

Some of us have man-sized hands that require it lol

    • http://profiles.google.com/nerdydesi Nerdy Desi

Would you be happy with no physical buttons on your computer keyboard or console gamepad?

    • sakinah1

Everyone doesn’t want an over-hyped, over-gloried typo-machine. One can make disparaging remarks about people who use slider phones until you’re blue in the face (e.g. training wheels, crutches, etc.), but there is no denying that a physical keyboard is more accurate and more efficient to type on.”WHO TYPES ON THEIR PHONE ANYMORE WHEN THEY CAN JUST SPEAK IT???” BS, voice recognition cannot dectect accents. Many people like to type without having to look at their screen and/or have half to 100% of their screen real estate hidden.

      • http://fujibayashi.jp/ Gasai Yuno

Another remark: touchtyping on the Droid? Possible. On the on-screen keyboard? Pretty much no.

I don’t even look at my D2G’s keyboard when I type, and I’m not bothered about typing too fast because I get tactile feedback from keypresses, and I know which key just went in. You just can’t do this with on-screen keyboards.

  • Tjk23

dude…. wtf i just got my D3 lol oh i deff just want the 4G!!!!

Back of the phone looks ugly.

  • http://twitter.com/Tomburgee Tom Burgee

i have the d3, never had more troubles with a phone. sent it off to moto – they lost it, found it, sent it back… same problems (and more arising). Customer Service was rude, and less than helpful. it will be a while before I buy any MOTO phone again.

    • Anonymous

I couldnt agree more. On the surface, the d3 was a nice evolutionary step, but pretty much everything about it sucks now. Im ready to quit Moto.

      • Anonymous

The D3 was a huge let down after owning a D1.  You never knew how good vanilla was until you don’t have it anymore.  THAT is why everyone is creaming themselves over the Nexus.

        • Anonymous

Exactly; a _ton_ of power users have a D1 (which, imo, is one of the precursors of the Nexus series along with the G1, because it showcased vanilla 2.0) on Verizon from when it first came out and now that their contracts are up, they’re looking to have the best once again, and the Nexus on Verizon fits the bill perfectly.

  • Rezound Owner :)

Man… I had the OG droid.. and I recently caved and got the Rezound thinking this was a long time in coming.. and now I am slightly regretting it :P I miss my physical qwerty keyboard

    • Blix

You can return your Rezound since it’s before Jan15th can’t you?

    • Anonymous

      Wanna trade for a D3????????

    • STiK

I bought a DX awhile back thinking I could get used to no physical keyboard. 8 months later I ended up paying full for a D3 because I just couldn’t get used to it.

  • http://www.scaryuncledevin.com/ Devin Rodriguez

Oh dear god! Another locked bootloader! However will I load my custom roms that somebody else built and figured out how to do for me?!

So when Verizon makes Samsung/Google lock the bootloader on the Nexus, is that going to be a deal breaker too?

    • http://twitter.com/droid1967 Droid 1967

yes that would be a deal breaker end of story.
not sure why you wouldnt think it would be.

  • Gadgetskopf

    Gorilla Glass?

  • http://profiles.google.com/nerdydesi Nerdy Desi

Huh, Verizon’s DMD (device management database) said it would not be global capable yet it looks like it will be after all. Also, if the back cover can pop off to place the micro-sim and micro sd-card, perhaps it has a removable battery when initial specs said it didn’t? That’s good to hear!

I’m so happy that sliders are still coming out, however few compared to slates. If this only had a 720P screen like the Rezound, it’d be perfect, but I’ll buy this to replace my Charge and wait for a quad-core slider next year!  : D

    • Anonymous

Yeah, whoa. World’s first LTE global phone. AND it’s got GLONASS. Sh*t just got real.

    • Marc

I’m glad it’s a global phone since I travel to Europe often for business. I really hope I could put in an extended battery.

      • LuvMusic

I agree, looks like a global phone to me too!  If it is, this is the replacement for my OG.  Like you, I travel in Europe frequently and this would be great.  Right now I don’t even take my OG with me when I’m in Europe.  When I bought it, I wasn’t diong the Europe thing but times have changed.  Time for my device to change too.

    • angelface77

It may get the hd display.

      • Guest

        ….

    • dreedy android

It will not, repeat, will NOT, be a global phone.  The micro SIM card is for the LTE 4G radio.  There are no global LTE devices on Verizon, nor will there be for at least a year, because the LTE radios in the devices are not compatible with GSM frequencies.  The 2nd gen LTE radios coming out in about a year will give you better battery management and have global capabilities.

REPEAT : The Droid 4 will not be global capable

      • Joaorocha18

But it says it supports GSM and HSDPA!

        • dreedy android

I don’t see how, unless Verizon/Moto is gonna unveil this phone with the 2nd LTE radio chips in it.  Which would be that the Galaxy Nexus would be outdated the second it hits the shelves.  It has to be a misprint of some sort because current LTE radio chips are not capable of receiving CDMA, LTE and GSM frequencies.

          • Joaorocha18

That makes sense, but I hope you’re wrong:) couldn’t they put 2 chips in it (lte and gsm)?

          • Manton08

It also says it has WCDMA. Doesn’t that mean it should work in Japan too?

          • Aston

Don’t the LTE phones now (ie. Thunderbolt) use 2 chips (one LTE and one CDMA)? Can’t they just use one GSM/CDMA chip and one LTE chip? Either use 2 SIMs or use some engineering to share the same SIM.

          • Marc

Yes, most, if not all, Verizon LTE phones use a dual chip solution for CDMA and LTE (isn’t good for battery life of course). It wouldn’t be impossible to use a global CDMA/GSM chip and an LTE chip.

The Razr uses a global CDMA/GSM module from Qualcomm and a Motorola made LTE module but the GSM portion isn’t being utilized. It could be that Motorola has been able to fully utilize the global 3G chip with their homegrown LTE chip for the Droid 4.

Of course, this is Verizon and I wouldn’t put it past them for copying and pasting the Qualcomm chip’s specs or from another phone without actually making sure the Droid 4 makes use of it.

  • Anonymous

Does Motorla even have designers, or do they just leave the aesthetics to their engineers? I’ll try to withhold judgement until I see it but this is just…unfortunate.

No HD screen, no ICS, ugly RAZR corners, no barometer – no deal.

like he said, no HD screen.

720 is not true hd either

          • http://www.scaryuncledevin.com/ Devin Rodriguez

Not true HD? Really? Because it’s not one of a few standards or what is used by so many TV broadcasters. Why not just go ahead and say 1080 isn’t true HD either since it’s not the original 4K resolution.

          • Chapmeister

            720P HD is 1280×720, just as 1080P is 1920×1080.

So, no, this is not a 720P screen, and it’s definitely not an HD screen.

          • http://www.scaryuncledevin.com/ Devin Rodriguez

I never said this was a 720 screen (which is why I have held off on getting one), just that 720 is HD.

          • Benjamin Landwehr

Because wanting to be able to type faster and more accurately is bad?  K.

I may be getting the Galaxy Nexus, but I sure as hell know the positives of having a hardware keyboard.  Your logic is stupid.  Some people like it, some people don’t.  Who cares.

          • mons

I’ve tried typing on a few physical keyboards and hated every one. The keys are so tiny!

I’ll take Swype or Swiftkey x over one of those everyday.  The world record for typing speed on a mobile device was held by Swype for a while, and is now held by Swiftkey (not sure if standard or the X version). K.

Biggest selling point imo of a physical keyboard is for emulators.

          • Anonymous

Despite the keys being smaller, you can have muscle memory with them. I sure as hell typed a lot faster on my Rogue before I got my Droid X. Yes, virtual keyboards are pretty good, but you still have to proofread your typing after you are done looking at the keyboard.

          • Dpry3580

A blue tooth keyboard is worth 60 -100 for accuracy not to be stuck with a useless double the weight slider, unless youre a girl with tiny fingers that is.

          • Anonymous

Isn’t that what the Nexus trolls do everyday?

          • Guest2

            they can’t help it.

        • Dr. Stupid

Actually, the barometer determines altitude on it’s own. It doesn’t need GPS. The GPS will use the barometer as one of the factors in helping it determine your location faster.

          • dkbetts

ACTUALLY…  I didn’t say that the barometer needed gps to determine the altitude.  Read my post again before trying to correct it.

          • Dr. Stupid

The GPS will determine altitude on it’s own down to around 3 meters. GPS determination of location is three dimensional. The barometer, at best, helps the GPS determine your location faster by providing one dimension, making triangulation easier.

A barometer determines altitude. It’s a freakin’ waste to have one on a GPS phone if you’re not going to use it to help the GPS. If the GPS on it’s own couldn’t figure out your altitude “more accurately” without a barometer, then it wouldn’t be able to determine the other two dimensions well either.

I  don’t care about a discussion of the subtle minutia of your post. It was wrong.

          • Master Schlong

Maybe I should make it simple for him: The barometer helps the GPS determine your LOCATION FASTER. The GPS doesn’t help the barometer do shiate. Is that easier for you to understand? You stated the opposite of the relationship of the GPS and barometer. Mr. Stupid had it right.

If people can’t be bothered to take 5 minutes and create/use an account then they must have a good reason. (They’re dicks maybe?) Who knows? Maybe the confirmed dick is arguing with himself. Especially posting as “Guest”. That’s the definition of message board cowardice but it’s great for building up your dick cred.

The dr stupid dick is right:

but he’s a bigger dick than the confirmed dkbetts dick because he’s an anonymous dick.

So the confirmed dick is wrong but the anonymous dicks are bigger dicks than the confirmed dick. It’s a win-win situation! Pat yourselves on the back! Hooorraaaaay!

          • dkbetts

First, I never said that the GPS couldn’t determine altitude on its own.  Second, AT BEST, the barometer can measure barometric pressure.  That info can be used for several things.  I won’t wast my breath.  Third, read the dang article, you pre-teen.

            http://www.popsci.com/gadgets/article/2011-10/so-um-why-does-new-google-phone-have-barometer-it

You totally misunderstood his post. I re-read it a few times and I still don’t think you realize that you actually agree with him. And are correcting something you think he is saying that he didn’t actually say.

I don’t care about a discussion of the subtle minutia of your total lack of reading comprehension. You are wrong.

          • Dr. Stupid

You re-read it a few times and came to that conclusion? Then you’re a moron. He said: “Ah hum…   The barometer is to help gps more accurately determine altitude.”

It does not do that. The GPS is actually more accurate than the barometer and does not need it to be “more accurate”. It’s for faster determination of the device’s location.

So many morons talking out of their butts around here.

          • Dpry3580

Well, me for one.  Moto finally is releasing a worthy successor to the OG Droid.  It will be thick enough so that it will not feel as odd in my hand as the RAZR, the screen is 4″ so it should not be so insanely wide as the RAZR, it has a removable battery, the sim and SD card are under the back cover, and it has 16g onboard and accepts 32g SD card.  The only downside is that the screen isn’t an HD, but I will check it out and if it looks good enough for me, then oh yeah! that is the one for me.

Glad to see someone else say it, because I always get flamed for doing so. Motorola continues their development of phones that aren’t up to par and pushes them out as fast as possible.  Why not spend a little time in development, get a few new designers, get a new camera, some better screens, new software engineers to improve blur – anything.

A company that once was of the highest quality has become a quantity quantity quantity company.  We want our quality back Moto, we don’t mind waiting for you to come up with a new design.

          • Anonymous

Amen brother!  The D3 is going to be my last Moto phone.  Time to check out the other pastures.  Moto seems more concerned with pumping the next biggest phone out rather than putting quality into them.  I mean heck, the D3 still has issues, my buddy with a Bionic is about ready to throw it against the wall because it keeps dropping 4G/3G signal and I’m sure the RAZR has its share of problems as well.  CLEAN UP IN ISLE 1, 2 and 3!  Eventually the phone you paid $200 – $300 for gets totally forgotten and you are left with a phone that hopefully a dev has spent some time with and fixes all the crap that the freakin manufacturer never could/would.  Its maddening enough to drive ya to the iSomething (well, almost).  At least for the most part, those are QA’d so that most major problems are taken care of and if they are not, get cleaned up quickly after release.

          • Anonymous

The iDevices have plenty of bugs as well buddy.  I’ve had the original Droid and now the Bionic and have no real issues with either.  Sure the signal drops out occasionally but I’m not having a fit over it as it doesn’t affect me 80% of the time.  Having said that it will be nice once they release the update that they’re taking their sweet time on.

          • Anonymous

“Have you already forgotten the Galaxy Nexus volume bug? Verizon and Samsung have also been working out kinks in the radios on it.”

Thank you, you made my point.  They are working on the bug *before* its released unlike Motorola who’s only concern is to push out the next phone *before* solving all of its issues.  You mean to tell me QA didn’t see the radio drops?  Moto is getting sloppier and sloppier.

“The iDevices have plenty of bugs as well buddy”

I own 4 iDevices so I am well aware of their shortcomings.  However, if there are any (and normally there aren’t a lot) they are quickly resolved.  You know they have every resource working on anything major.  They aren’t trying to push out another phone 4 weeks after… I overlooked issues on the OG Droid because it was GEN 1 for Motorola. We’re not in GEN 1 devices anymore. I don’t expect obvious bugs when purchasing a new phone anymore.

          • Anonymous

The Galaxy Nexus is available everywhere else in the world except the US, that’s why the bug was found.  My point is that all devices have bugs and from my experience, while Motorola and Verizon do tend to take their time with updates, Motorola’s devices generally aren’t any buggier than any other OEM’s.  Funny how everyone seems to have forgotten all the problems the original Galaxy S series had and are so willing to jump into Samsung again.  I just watched a Galaxy Nexus video on youtube and the phone crashed and restarted on the initial setup screen.  If you think a new OS isn’t going to have any bugs you’re fooling yourself.

          • MicroNix

But again, like the iPhone, Nexus devices are fixed far more quickly than other “skinned” phones.  If you think that isn’t the case then you are fooling yourself.  Nexus is also a developer phone meaning if there are problems, it won’t be long until the dev community has their own roms out for it.  It is more OG Droid-like than the D3, D4, Bionic or RAZR.

          • Anonymous

Why don’t you just admit that all you care about is hacking your phone and loading custom roms? That’s all you have to do. That’s the only difference between the two. You can say it’s because of stock android but guess what, you can still get 99% of stock android on a phone with a locked bootloader. It’s funny that you think you’re going to get updates so much faster on a Verizon branded phone that’s made specifically for their network and which has to pass their drawn out QC tests. This is not the same Galaxy Nexus that’s being released worldwide in which Google can just push the update to themselves for one device.

          • MicroNix

I can root my D3 right now and install a custom rom but I haven’t.  So no, its not all about the ability to have the phone.  Its about not having the extra crap like Blur, Touch Wiz and Sense.  Why can’t you understand all of this?  Are you sure you had an OG Droid?  Because you troll like you have no experience at all with the different flavors of Android.

          • Anonymous

That’s called stock android, did you not read anything I said? Good, fine, buy a nexus if you want stock, just stfu with the trolling of everything else. I’m glad that I’m not the only one with problems on all Motorola phones. Had the og Droid, Droid x, Droid 2, and I keep thinking it’s going to run smoother as the new replacement comes out. But when every Motorola keeps running like it has a mind of it’s own; I’ve decided that Motorola makes broken phones. I will never buy another Motorola again. My original i@h$ne before I switched to android worked smoother. And I don’t want to switch back, but Motorolas forcing me to feel like I should switch back “someone help me!!!” I’m tired of buggy phones and I don’t want to have to switch back. Hopefully the Nexus is going to fix it for me, I’ve never had a Samsung phone before but if it’s as buggy as the Motorola’s, I’ll give up on android. 2 years of headaches and 3 phones, I never had to go through that many phones in that amount of time before. A waste of my money and time. Someone help me.

        • Dpry3580

I’ve got an X after having two incredibles, and a D1. The X is the best phone I’ve had yet. NO BUGS. NOT ONE. I can’t wait to get the Razor on the 29th. The D4 is a Razor with the heavy useless keyboard and smaller screen. Last new every 2, and spec wise, nothing is quite a good as the razor.

        • Benzeclipse

I had the tbolt, baddest phone around with custom rom, other than that, its you average smart phone. I would have to root and rom it just to make it work… picked up razr, no desire to get a new rom, just rooted it for tether. Phone is fine as is… that is all.

          • babadush

The slider is junk. But so is the tbolt. Shouldve waited for the razor.

      • http://profiles.google.com/animorphed Jake Byckowski

I’m still confused by many of the “locked bootloader” comments…  Every motorola phone I have owned with Android has had a locked bootloader yet with every single phone there have been ways around it and I have run a custom rom on every last one of them. If you really know what you are doing then locked or unlocked really isn’t an issue other than something to bitch about. Its Verizon, Moto or not shouldn’t you expect it by now. Just get the phone you like and let the modder/devs explain how to get around it later.

        • Rw-1

Seriously, the nexus will be unlocked, and moto has no excuses other than to point the finger to VZ on this. Fail – because if Jha had balls to leave it unlocked, VZ would still buy it, just like the nexus.

        • Anonymous

yes and no… the only way to flash completely different roms is by hijacking the initialization process(2nd init) which a. is messy and b. still won’t let you tweak things at the kernal level…

so yes there are work arounds but why should I have to fight my phone… and that is the whole bootloader issue… now if they find a way to apply the global varieties unlocked bootloader(similiar to the atrix) then I would be more than happy to get this phone but for now I wait… <– the excuse I'm using until I have enough money to actually pay for a phone… :P

          • sakinah1

Nice excuse. At least you’re decent enough to admit that it’s an excuse instead of blatantly bash like most posters do.

          • Anonymous

It’s not really a excuse. Some people do like modding their phones at the kernal level.

        • Anonymous

You can run a custom ROM, but it takes a LOT longer for the phone to be rooted (Nexus and Samsung phones are usually day 0, HTC within a week, Moto sometimes a month) and you can’t mess with the kernel or some other stuff.
