Motorola Preparing Special Project for the Original DROID?

An email about the original DROID from the Motorola Feedback Network, now there is something I don’t think anyone thought we would ever see again. Could it be an update to Gingerbread? Maybe a simple bug fix? Maybe something to highlight the glory of the old days when bootloaders weren’t locked up like a prison and bloatware wasn’t flowing like wine? Tough to tell, but here is the email that just went out to anyone registered on the MFN with an OG:

Thanks for joining the Motorola Feedback Network. We are preparing a project for owners of the original Motorola Droid on Verizon, and would like to invite you to participate. I’m at a loss for words. Almost brings a tear of joy to my eye. We knew this was the greatest phone ever made, but who knew that it would continue to receive some sort of support 2 years after initial release? Such a bad, bad machine.

Cheers M and C!

  • Charlie

Hmmm, Ok Motorola, where is my email?  I’m registered on MFN and am still using my OG. What u got cookin, MOTO?

  • Waiting for the Droid 4 Global. {{-_-}}

  • I would not be surprised to see Moto bring Gingerbread to the OG.
If I’m currently rocking 2.3.7 on the OG thanks to CM 7.1, it’s completely possible for Moto to at least give us at least 2.3.3.

  • 23 Com

lol…I still have my og droid…for at least one more year. But I flashed cyanogenmod on it already 😛

  • Andrew

    Free unlocked Droid4? woo!

  • Ice Cream.

    2.2.3?!!!!! Please!! 😉

  • Riyaan2

    Still rockin mhy og bionic

  • Rodys Gonzalez

  • Still got my OG Droid and it’s running very, very slow now. terrible memory on-board also 😛 but hey its my lil droid that does its job at its own [pace]

  • Anthony Lamberto

Kellex you’ll tell us what it is as soon as you find out right? Almost wish i was using my OGD… but I love my Bionic so I’m just curious since i gave my OGD to my Mom as her first smartphone

  • Still sporting my original D1 – of course it’s rooted, overclocked, and running Gingerbread with no real issues.

Holding out for the DROID 4 next June :o)

  • RIP OG

Are they serious?! Everyone I know with and OG the damn thing is barely breathing. (The last two I had are deceased). Yes we can all agree on how this phone changed the game and really took Android to a level none of us could of ever imagine. But let the phone RIP. I know everyone won’t agree with me because they just can’t get over the fact of retiring their OG but it’s time people. Hey Moto, instead of wasting time trying to tune up a car that needs to be recycled, how about focus on a real Moto replacement to the OG. The Razr is not it. Although the Razr is a nice phone its not a stock experience and it’s locked like Fort Knox. This is just my opinion on this, I’m sure many of you won’t agree because you treat your OG like it was your first blanklet as a kid and youu want to carry it with you forever and not part ways with it. Anyone feel this way or are you guys to much in love with the OG to say goodbye?

    • Anonymous

Thank you for addressing the elephant in the room

  • Although i’m still rocking the OG Droid, i won’t be getting this special project as i live in canada and we always get shafted haha

    • … devs will get it to you bro.. dont worry.

      • Anonymous

Uum no it won’t. pretty sure today is 11/10 and no release.

        • yeah.. i’m aware of that.. but that was one of the days in question.. my comment was meant as a joke.

            bad, bad joke

    Well…there goes that.

id say ics… but.. on a 600 mhz processor… that can’t go well… lol… anyways, rezound for me from a og incred x and thunder.

    • Anonymous

Rezound looks like a really nice phone and everyone seems to love the screen. Plus it is getting lots of developer love already.

    • Stephen D

Well, ICS has hardware acceleration don’t forget. That can make a massive difference. My 2nd gen iTouch, with a 411mhz ARM 11 CPU, scrolls very smoothly, simply because of HW acceleration. The Droid has a 550mhz Cortex A8 CPU. So who knows, ICS could be really smooth.

Holy sh1t. I upgraded too soon! Haha. Go little buddy!

Q: What did you love most about your Droid (answer all that apply)

    A: Stock Android
        Unlocked Bootloader
    Limited Bloatware

    • Anonymous

awesome developer support as well…plenty roms kernels etc…choices lots of choices!

  • Most likely to fix that damn bootloader problem. I, like many, am still holding on to  mine for the Nexus. Almost here!!

  • razrftw

still rocking my droid, yall mad?

    • Anonymous

mad at VZW…Gimme my Nexus…oh yeah…rocking the OG here as well!

    • Anonymous

Hellz no. I just bought another one and it makes flashing ROM’s feel like more fun for some reason. I just started using MIUI for the first time and I have to admit it is one of the most innovative ROM’s I’ve used in a long time

  • Ed

They should unlock the OG Milestone bootloader 🙁

  • Dan

This just in: The Droid will become the first phone to receive Ice Cream Sandwich.

lol jk, we can all dream…

    • Anonymous

  • Anonymous

Wow. Some of you guys are real champions for still using the OG. It was the shit when it came out and maybe a year after that. Seriously, it needs to be retired. No matter what ROM i tried, mine just got slower and slower. It seems unable to keep up with multitasking and apps of today. Still can’t bring myself to sell it though. I stare at it on the shelf every now and then. I rock a Droid X now and its like night and day.

    • Anonymous

Still rockin’ the OG here with LGB and mine still performs as good as new…gotta admit it’s getting old though…updrading to Gnex as soon as VZW will let me!

    • Well that’s funny because I think the same thing about the DROID X. Now that thing is a piece of junk in plain English. If you think otherwise you’re clearly just in denial.

      • Anonymous

ROM it up and it’s great.

      • Anonymous

Rocking mine. Runs great and has the best display ever made on a Moto device.

    • QQMore

Was starting to think the same thing.  Mine was seriously limping along.  Couldn’t even play more than one attempt at one level on the Angry Birds mooncake update.  Droidforums had a link in Pete’s section about flashing back to stock via an sbf file and re-rooting supposedly fixing poorly performing OG Droids.  Sure enough it worked.  It still has its moments once in a while but overall it’s running much smoother.

  • KRSwon

Didnt Motorola tweet about something coming up for OG DROID owners a few months ago?

  • HAHA !! this made me laugh”This is a confidential project under the terms of the Motorola Feedback Network. Do not post any details or information about this project on any public sites.”

  • Probably a bootloader and a blur port… xDD

    • QQMore

LMAO for some reason I could just possibly see this happening.  Sort of a cruel April Fool’s joke that isn’t really a joke.

      • They’ll call it brining it into the future xDD

  • Anonymous

A tear will definitely come to my eye as I lay my OG down to rest and activate the GrandKid…Galaxy Nexus!?!

  • Rlcinaz

Still using my OG Droid, but thinking the RAZR is my next choice with my upgrade this weekend.

    • Getting a RAZR would worry me. I’ve owned the original Droid and the Droid X2 and I’ve flashed custom ROMs and kernels an umber of times. Sometimes I will get a boot-loop to where I have to pull the battery. How will we get past this with the RAZR if you cannot remove the battery? The RAZR will have a non-removable battery.

      • Also of concern is the BSOD, you don’t even have to flash ROMs to get that on the Bionic… A factory data wipe solved my issues so it was probably an app, but still need to be able to pull the battery.

      • Anonymous

Hold power button and volume down, same thing for tablets that do not have removable batteries

  • Anonymous

wow, count me and my OG in. Wonder what it is?

  • I’ve always considered developing a non-phone ROM for the Droid. Since phones become useless after we activate a new one (for most of us), it would be cool to think of all the things one can do with the hardware after we take the phone part out of the equation. Maybe Motorola is considering the same thing, since it is probably the most owned and (soon to be) currently unused phone in Android history.

    • Anonymous

That would be awesome…seeing as how my OG will become my  son’s toy once I upgrade…even without the network it can do a lot just with wifi

      • Anonymous

I was using mine as a security camera for a while.

    • Anonymous

I’m planning on using mine with the app Tourque and my bluetooth OBD2 reader as an always there telemetry monitor. Maybe with cached google maps too, as an always present map display?

      • I got Torque running on bluetooth OBD2 ($12 from ebay).  gotta say, greatest app ever made for android.

        • Mike Ambrosino

Is there a certain brand you went with or was is just generic ebay style.. I’m just worried about compatibility.

          • orange and blue one worked great with my ford. they’re usually around $20 and ship from hong kong.
it took two weeks to get here.
i dont remember the name exactly. (dont feel like running to the car) but its ELM127 or something along those lines.

      • Anonymous

torque owns.. I have an E92 335i and I use it with my droid x… incredible, but the 3.7″ screen would suck compared to my 4.3

can’t wait to get the gnex, torque at 720p

STILL waiting on car dock info for the gnex.. this could make or break the device… I pretty much make my phone decisions based on the car dock and is part of the reason I returned my tbolt.. that and the 5 hour battery life with more turned off than my 24 hour DX

        • Anonymous

Me too, I’m hoping that the contacts on the side are a good sign. At least a desktop dock I could put on the dash. I do that with the OG since it’s far more convenient than the car dock. No snapping in, plugging in, and worrying about the suction holding. Just in and out.

          • Anonymous

Yeah I never thought about using the desktop dock I had both with my OF and have both for my DX .. the DX dock was definitely a step up.. charges when plugged in easier to remove and camera is not covered.. I track and use the camera function its really sick.. at the gnex unveil they made a big point about those 3 contacts and even coined a name for it but only mentioned a desktop dock.. it would be sick if there was an api or something for it so we could use 3rd party because if im not mistaken sanding has never really made docks.. that’s why moto owns they make extremely quality accessories .. I got that “droid x ultimate pack” $150 for $20 even the car charger is very high quality and looks awesome

          • Anonymous

Normally this would be a very big deal for me too but I’m really considering a tablet as well as a G-Nex, so a custom dock for the T-Prime (you heard it hear first) with the G-Nex Tethering would work better for me. Heck, in that case I might actually get a case for the G-Nex….

Ahhh choices. I dispise Blur but it is much better these days…. we will see.

    • Anonymous

I am planning on buying a few of them to sell as wifi home automation controllers. It is perfect for it. Lights, tvs, audio system, alarm, remote camera monitoring, hell even ac and heat. All through wifi.

How is the screen? I really need to go and hold one. The Dx2 was so dissapointing compared with my DX that I am really picky about the screens now. I held onto my DX for this long merely for the screen quality. Not that I expect much more from the GNex, but I am curious where this would stand inbetween the DX and the DX2. I am hoping it is closer to the DX and doesn’t look like crap like the DX2 does.

Subject: [droidlife] Re: Motorola Preparing Special Project for the Original DROID?

          • Anonymous

The Razr has a good screen. I can’t really comment on if its super OMG awesome but when I held it I got real close and couldn’t really see imperfections. The Bionic, DX2, and Nexus S I noticed immediately

          • Anonymous

The display is better than all the moto Droid, including the Droid. It is also better than the nexus s display. The device is close to perfect.

          • Anonymous

Very exciting. Was gonna try and score a free one through VZW but if the Amazon rumors is true, I might be forced to just the cash and walk away smiling. Thx Angel. 🙂

you are welcome bro. My friend is trying to get the amazon deal as well. I told him he may have to hurry up because if i am not mistaken the offer is for one day.

          • Stephen D

I went and saw it a few days before release, and the screen was shockingly beautiful. Decent color accuracy, deep blacks, and it looked really sharp. I’ve read that it uses a PenTile subpixel matrix, but it might be the RGBG layout from the Super AMOLED displays, not the RGBW that Moto’s other phones use. I couldn’t see the dots in the battery icon like on other phones.

    • If you guys have any ideas for such a ROM, feel free to shoot them my way, and I’ll put my developer hat on for a little while.

    • lonndoggie

That’s what I’ve done.  My OG is my alarm clock, which also gets email, Twitter, etc.  I’ve got it in airplane mode with wifi turned on.  I take it off the desk stand in the AM, and at night when I get back there’s still 70-80% of the battery left.

I’m running CyanogenMod 7 on it…maybe they could create an alternate build, as you suggest, with no cellular radio. Hrm…

    • Brian

I’m using mine as a wi-fi internet music player. I have it docked next to my stereo, and have Google music beta, and a bunch of internet radio applications on the Droid. I have a nice 3-part mini-plug powered speaker, so it plays and sounds great.

      • Reading that I was thinking it sounds like a great use, but then I remembered my headphone jack doesn’t work well on mine anymore. Then I was sad.

        • yeah thought the same then remembered mine does not work at all ha. oh well

        • Anonymous

        • Anonymous

Either way the headphone puts out TERRIBLE audio quality to receivers. It’s okay for headphone but any real equipment just brings out the flaws.

If we could get someone to figure out how to push audio out of the USB port it would be the best thing ever for the Droid

Still need to try bluetooth audio.

    • Anonymous

I use mine in my car as a podcast and music player. When I park the car at night it’s close enough to my house to link to my wifi network and download all the latest podcasts I’m interested in. Works better than any other solution I’ve been able to come up with. Now if I could just figure out a way to use it as a GPS navigation device without cell service.
