Motorola Sends XOOM 4G Upgrade Email In Error

Yesterday we posted a story about a consumer possibly receiving an email from Motorola asking that he send in his XOOM for the 4G LTE upgrade. Well we just got an e-mail from Motorola confirming our suspicions – It’s a mistake, folks!

Statement from Motorola Mobility:

A very small number of Motorola XOOM users recently received an email from Motorola regarding the 4G LTE upgrade process.  While we are very excited about being able to offer the upgrade this summer, and know our customers are equally excited about the benefits that 4G LTE speeds will bring to their Motorola XOOM, the email was sent in error.  We apologize for any confusion this may have caused, and look forward to being able to share more specifics on how — and when — users can take advantage of 4G LTE on their Motorola XOOM in the near future.

Well that’s a bummer for everyone hoping for 4G on their XOOMs sooner than later. But not to worry, “near future” is always promising when it comes to these things.

I still have 10 days to return mine, I think I’m gonna take it back and get the galaxy tab.

Overpriced by hundreds of dollars. Released without SD card support or LTE, and may never get either. When will we learn not to trust Verizon?

Moto and Verizon – doing a better job of destroying Android tablet credibility than Apple ever could.

The word has long been popular, and its use is increasing. Unless you think Steve Jobs, Bob Dylan, Douglas Adams and Barack Obama are “uneducated country bumpkins,” you might want to rethink your position.

      • Rizzidy

They use it to appeal to uneducated country bumpkins.  Hardly a good comparison.

what if i don’t own a Xoom or any tablet? will i still rceivee this email?

  • Anonymous

“Bang! Pow!” Man the hits just keep coming from Moto, not that I own a Xoom to begin with.  I’ve just gotten into the Android game hardcore when the DX was released in July.  Through my Android maturation process, I’ve discovered that my next phone in 2012 (upgrade date) is going to be the Nexus or something similar that is completely stock with no locked bootloader.  I’ve had enough of this delayed update and bogged down junk. Sorry, just had to vent there.

    i want a $200 refund. if i have just a wifi-3g tablet, and i have a contract, give me $200 back.

  • 2Ceedz

Well, if your with Big Red, all you have to do (in my area – due for 4g but not eligable yet) is call *611 and they will send you a label.  You must be home to sign for it though.   I got my 1st label last week Monday, sent the Xoom last thursday, they recieved it 3 days ago.  Called after i saw the story here, they confirmed, they should have it finished within 5-7 days upon recieving it, and I should be recieving it back by next Monday, Possible by the end of this week.

Also, right before i saw this story yesterday, i have another Xoom to send off for my little brother, called Big Red and had them send another label out for my 2nd Xoom upgrade, which i should be recieving yesterday.

I had no clue this was even an issue, as for the 1st upgrade, i went to the corporate store to buy a case, got insurance and asked for the shipping label, there was no problem.  That was a week and a half ago from Monday, the 6th.

If your with Big Red (i have no contracts either on them), then just call *611.  Dont know if its just my area, but i know this story shocked me.

    • 2Ceedz

Sorry for the error, I should be recieving my 2nd upgrade label tomorrow (not yesterday as i have posted, LOL)

      • Peter Wilkinson

dude. i love you. you are like my hero. are you by any chance related to jesus?

        • 2Ceedz

LMAO!! Haha, na, just real lucky finally i guess.. but tomorrow 2nd Xoom going to ship for upgrade.  :-)

    • 2Ceedz

Sorry for the error, I should be recieving my 2nd upgrade label tomorrow (not yesterday as i have posted, LOL)

Exactly why I didn’t get the XOOM on day one – I wasn’t about to trust them on getting a timely upgrade.  I feel for everyone who paid 4G price and is stuck without it.  Maybe they’ll have it come out about the same time the XOOM 2 hits the shelves.  Still glad still device didn’t get the Droid label – it would have brought the label down like the Eris.

Or maybe they never sent it.  Dum dum duummmmmmmm

Ok, so I have the WiFi version… but I’m still curious what the motive is behind not enabling the SD card slot yet?  Did I miss something?  I know there is a hack, but why is Moto delaying stuff for so long?

I emailed them about this….see belo…. honestly not much help. I should have shown you the email I sent that prompted this response….

      Dear Jason,

Thanks for reaching out to Motorola. Ive reviewed your e-mail and Im ready to help.

The Motorola XOOM device will launch as a 3G/Wi-Fi-enabled device in Q1 2011 with a free upgrade to 4G LTE in Q2.

Please click here for more details.

      http://support.vzw.com/faqs/Equipment/xoom_upgrade.html

All Motorola XOOM tablets on the Verizon Wireless network are eligible to receive an upgrade to support 4G LTE. This includes those that have been unlocked; however, those units must be submitted for upgrade with the original factory software reinstalled and the device relocked in order to receive the upgrade.

For devices that are returned unlocked, Motorola will attempt to complete the upgrade, but may be unable to update the software. In these cases, the device will be returned to the consumer with just the 4G LTE modem installed.

More details on the process will be available closer to the upgrade availability.

Verizon has a site where you can enter your email address to get details on the LTE upgrade when they are available. Please click here to learn more:

      http://phones.verizonwireless.com/xoom/upgrade/

I do apologize but there is no exact date yet for the release of the software update. I’m so sorry for that inconvenience. For the latest news regarding the upcoming updates for the Motorola XOOM, please refer to the product page of the device. We will post the update and it’s detail on this link:

Note: The Motorola XOOM supports up to 32 GB of internal storage. Please click here for information on how to transfer files to and from your computer:

So basically what he said was it has 32 gb internal storage, the comment above was software update to unlock SD card for reference. I will attach my email too it makes a little more sense.

I currently have a xoom. When I purchased the product I did so under the impression that within six weeks I would have an upgrade to 4g and SD card storage. Personally I feel that these should have been included from the beginning however was excited for the product so I purchased it with 3g knowing an upgrade was coming soon. For months Motorola has advertised the xoom being the first 4g capable device, only to be beat to the punch by Samsung. I could take the chance, void my warranty, root my device and have SD card access but I should not have to. As far as 4g is concerned that is why I purchased the xoom in the first place.

This is the first Motorola device I have owned. I have heard rumors of the lack of support that Motorola has for their products. ( I mention this as you should know how your customers feel as you can only fix a problem that is known.)

My question, do you have an official date for 4g lte upgrade for the Motorola xoom as advertised? In addition when can we expect SD card support as this can be performed through a maintenance update and would require no hardware?

It is rather disappointing knowing my xoom is capable of so much more but nothing is being done to fix a product that was rushed to the market and has yet to be completed. This may be my last Motorola purchase, to bad as the bionic looks like a heck of a phone.

        Sincerely,

        Jason

Lol, I hope that was said tongue in cheek.  It’s hard to tell sometimes since you ride Moto’s nuts pretty hard.

Have detailed been released on the cost of 4G for the XOOM specifically?

    • http://twitter.com/wynalazca Andrew Webber

I’m fairly certain it’s a free upgrade. They send you a box and pay for shipping and everything. Don’t quote me…

    • 2Ceedz

They did send me a 4G pamphlet in the mail with the shipping label, but have yet to really look at it, as Xoom wont be back home until Friday … at the earliest.
