HTC Thunderbolt Users Experiencing Random Reboots After Update

How’s everyone doing after receiving the HTC Thunderbolt update that went live yesterday?  All good?  Not good?  Experiencing random reboots?  We’re not surprised at all.  This same update was leaked out a few weeks ago and gave users the exact same problem.  In fact, our buddy Justin Case has been tweeting about it since day one and we were hoping was the reason that it was initially delayed.  I guess we hoped wrong.

We’ve already heard from a number of readers who accepted the update and are now hating life as a Thunderbolt owner.  In fact, one reader (Brian) has had at least 6 in just the last 24 hours since he pulled the update to his phone.  He’s not the only one though – our Twitter account isn’t all that pretty with Tbolt @mentions.

So please, let us know in the comments if you are experiencing this known issue.  We’ll be reaching out to Verizon.

*Tip – If you are struggling to get the update to pop up on your device, try this:

##778## thing and change the RevA setting to “enable” instead of “eHRPD” – then use LTEOnOff to switch to CDMA auto (PRL)

Cheers Aaron, Brian and everyone else!

No problems here whatsoever. This week also has seen consistent 15+ hours of battery before and after the update. It’s like a switch was flipped and the phone is actually doing the right thing. All update functions work too.

  • George

No issues after update yesterday.  Very happy with my TB!

  • Anonymous

Actually, ironically it was the opposite for my bolt. Before the update it randomly reboots once a day or so, but after the update, all stable so far. (updated yesterday so one day in)

  • Browncoat82

I updated my Thunderbolt yesterday and have experienced nothing but negative results. My phone ran perfectly until I updated. Now scrolling, loading programs, everything is slower and just buggy. Loading webpages will sometimes come up as a blank white pages and then eventually load correctly. Then this morning my phone randomly restarted twice within 5 minutes. The phone also feels hotter, especially when using 3G (my city doesn’t have 4G yet).

looks like sucking hardcore isn’t limited to jsut Motorola anymore…

damn, HTC. jsut when i was about to join your fan base.

verizon: you can go suck it, always, 4 life. if i weren’t on a family plan, i wouldn’t ditched your horrible attitude towards devices a while ago.

Have had 2 reboots in 2 hours since installing update.

I didn’t have any random reboots yesterday after the update but I have had two in the past few hours.

Does this update work for rooted users running custom ROMs?

software updates should be turned off in the rom. most developers shut
it off because it can mess up the phone so you probably dont even have
      the option to download it

as stated by a user yesterday

So I’ll have to wait for the ROM I am running to release a new version with this update, correct?

Stock Thunderbolt Owner, Rebooted constantly after the update, probably did it 5 or 6 times. Would not do it while i was doing something on it but the second i set it down and looked away it would reboot. I finally did a manual power down and let it sit for a minute. Since then I haven’t noticed any issues.

I had two reboots within an hour this morning. I had to shutdown for a flight, but after the flight went seven hours and then a reboot.

no reboots here before or after OTA.  Makes you wonder what the underlying problem could be. I would be seriously bummed if I had recurring reboot problems though.  Thankfully not my problem,  Yet!

no reboots here. it’s been working fine since update yesterday. have noticed improved functionality in SMS though.

    • Anonymous

same here but I noticed the battery dipped to 35% in under 4hrs after a full charge today after the update with very little usage. Normally its at around 70-80% at around the same time.

    • Anonymous

What kind of improved functionality are you talking about – please explain.  Also, how long does it take for your TBolt to lock on to your position?  Mine takes about three – four minutes.  My 3G radio seems to be working and when I am in range of LTE it works but the GPS thing makes using GMaps useless.

  • Jwilder517

Rebooted twice since last night, but I was actually having random reboots before the update and this doesn’t seem to be any worse. On the plus side, GPS actually gets a fix now – when I need it instead of 5 minutes after I missed my turn.

When i installed the leaked version I was getting all kinds of reboots so then verizon sent me a replacement and I got the replacement yesterday and only had one random reboot after I installed the new software.

      • FortitudineVincimus

so you loaded a leaked version and somehow got a new phone as well?

  • Mlevines

Rebooted about 6 times since I updated yesterday.   In the middle of calls, just sitting on the desk, playing music….   Never did this before the update.

No reboots here, pulled the update yesterday morning. morning.

  • Memphis550

     none here

  • Matt

I’ve had no reboot issues in the first day and a half since the update.

  • Anonymous

I downloaded it yesterday. Works great for me. Nothing seemed to change as far as god or 3g connectivity. But no random reboot either.

  • http://twitter.com/ehausnj Eric Hauser

Got the update yesterday morning and haven’t had any reboots yet. I honestly haven’t seen any change in phones behavior, good or bad, since the update.

  • D.B.Evans

Stable here so far – no reboot yet – hoping it doesn’t start later. Also noticed that the weather widget now shows me in the correct state, so that’s an improvement from the patch.

  • Phil Kent

i had 4 times, but mine didnt reboot, it just shut off

  • Franzie3

+1 for random reboot, been getting these since the leak.  Luckily not when im using the phone.

How does this update effect rooted users?  I’m still not being prompted for it, nor do i care that much, just want to know how it effects root and if i do eventually get the pop up i can just do it without issue.

I remember reading somewhere that the cause of the random reboots was actually a bug in some of the tower side software and that the delay in releasing this update was to give them time to fix the towers.  Apparently that didn’t happen for everyone…

    • Anonymous

Hopefully they will get the towers patched, if that’s the case.

No reboots…yet anyway. Hopefully it stays that way. I haven’t really had any of the issues that this addresses beforehand (had the location issue once, but it went away and stayed away after a factory reset)…

No problems with reboots, but not really seeing any improvements with regards to GPS, call quality, or maintaining a signal, so not really sure what the update was for.

    • http://twitter.com/samari711 samari711

Have you turned off Verizon location assistance? My GPS started behaving after I did that.

     Getting reboots here

I got my update yesterday evening & I got my first reboot this morning. Also it looks like they never fixed the GPS issue I am still not getting a accurate location fix on my TBolt. The location has been off ever since I got the phone.

  • Anonymous

I think I had a reboot yesterday but only one. Also my phone has had random reboots since BEFORE the update so it may have worsened the issue but I’m not sure its the root cause of it.

  • Doug

I had reboots all the time on the leaked update. Went to radio I found while looking through all the threads about it and it seems to be working fine but my 3g isn’t always working correctly. Seems like loose-loose. Random reboots or qwerky 3g…

His name is actually Justin Case? Hehe.

    • Jeremy Gentry

he should have rooted his phone “just in case” LOL

I’m glad I haven’t updated yet, still running the leaked version with great battery life. I’ll wait until they fix this.

    • FortitudineVincimus

funny, I was going to say the same thing

as well, it seems the TB is a real PITA phone from all I read
