How to: Get Rooted Gingerbread on DROID 2

As many of you know by now, Gingerbread for the DROID 2 and X was released over the weekend giving all of us a taste of Android 2.3.3 and the new blue Blur from Motorola, only there was one thing missing.  Root access.  Well, that problem has now been fixed by our friends over at My Droid World, and we’ve got full instructions for you after the break if you jumped on GB early.  Yep, we walk you through every single step including flashing an SBF file which is something you won’t find anywhere else.

In these instructions, you are essentially reverting back down to Blur build 2.3.20 and then re-upgrading to rooted Gingerbread.  The process looks intense, but again, we outlined every step to help you get there.

Instructions for DROID2:

*WARNING* – You will lose everything on your phone by following the process.  This wipes it all people.

*WARNING 2* – This is NOT for the DROID X. Those instructions are here.

*Note* - If you didn’t jump the gun and flash the non-rooted version and are still running something like say, Liberty ROM, all you have to do is flash the .zip file below just as you would any other ROM.

Download:  Monster_2.3.2_4.5.153_updater_Rooted.zip

*Note Again* – If you have not already upgraded to Gingerbread, simply download the .zip file, flash it like you normally would a ROM, and ignore this entire process.

1.  Download the file from above and drop it on your SD card.
2.  Download the 2.3.20 SBF file for the DX. [Here]
3.  Download,  install and open RSD lite 4.8. [Here]
4.  Plug your phone into your Windows PC and turn your phone off.
5.  Boot into the bootloader by holding Power + Up Arrow.
6.  Your computer will likely install new drivers at this point.
7.  Once RSD lite recognizes your phone, hit the “…” box and choose the 2.3.20 SBF file.
8.  Click “Start.”
9.  When it finishes and gets to 100%, power your phone off.
10.  Boot into recovery by holding Home + X.
11.  When the triangle appears, hit both Volume Up and Down at the same time.
12.  Navigate down to wipe data/factory reset, select it with camera, say “yes.”
13.  When it finishes, reboot your phone.
14.  Download z4root 1.3.0 and root your phone.
15.  Download D2 Bootstrap and bootstrap your recovery.
16.  Reboot into recovery.
17.  Choose “install zip from sd card”, “choose”, then the Monster_2.3.2_Rooted.zip.
18.  Your phone will now install Gingerbread with root.
19.  When you reboot, your phone will appear to bootloop.  Let it.
20.  If it does it for say, 5 minutes, just pull your battery and reboot.
21.  To Boostrap after installing Gingerbread, you’ll need to use the D2 Bootstrapper.
22.  Enjoy!

  • Brandenballes

Does anyone else have a problem with the Blur 3.0 Profiles always in the backgrounds?

  • MMortal

OK did this and finally got everything back up and running.  Thanks to JOE for the *228 advice much appreciated.  The only issue now is it isn’t rooted.  I try to root it and can’t.  z4root crash’s each time it tries to root, and superonclick freezes on psneuter.  Also everytime I restart it goes to recovery and I have to choise reboot from there… any suggestions would be great!

  • Andrew

Is this worth it? because the globabl is getting gb. not D2!

  • Andrew

Okay so ive done simple things with rooting like boot animation changes but to flash this (in simple terms) i just go into recovery find the file and instal then dial *228 to activate my phone?

  • matt

U people need to stop acting stupid. U are sking questions that the article answers. And yes it should work with d2g with the get-r-done romer

Ive done combinations of wiping cache/data and mounting different disks and nothing is allowing the installation to get past this phase. any help?

I am also a mac user and dont want to deal with RSDlite, but so far I dont see a need to use that… when my install gets stuck on this part I simply take my battery out and my phone boots back into Liberty.

FYI, RSDLite 4.8 did not work for me in WIn7 64bit. It stopped at 95% (maybe 99%), and never finished. D2 got stuck, and would not go into anything (Boot loader, Revcovery mode). I had to use XP (32bit), and installed Motorola_Mobile_Drivers_4.7.1_MotoConnect_1.1.31.exe (32bit) along with the same RSDLite 4.8. That worked, and got me passed Step 9.

  • Burl

    doesnt work from regular gingerbread

  • eeeee

i jumped the gun and flashed the unrooted gingerbread.  can i just do a factory reset and flash the rooted version with having to deal with the SBF?  i’m on a mac.

that DX sbf file bricked my phone!!! I want these 2.3.3 or the beta version of the new blur, the 4.5.589!!!

    • http://twitter.com/LikeBandits Stoli Decker

Yeah, I bricked my D2 after trying to go from this to 4.5.589! I just brought it back to life like an hour ago haha .. key is backups, backups, backups!

  • Willtur

I would recommend resetting your account through settings>>privacy..etc, My blank screen had to do with my account info not being able to be access so my phone and other account links didnt work. When I say blank screen just for other people I mean the phone boots up, you unlock and no icons appear, applications button doesnt work either. Double tap home to bring up voice command to get the settings to erase.

  • Willtur

so when I went through the steps everything seemed to work till it rebooted to a blank home screen, after trying multiple things I ended up using voice command to get into settings to erase my phone which worked.

  • Simmy

Can I just put this in my SD card and using bootstrap recovery app for d 2 will it work I’m all ready rooted or what

  • L00n232

Do we download this to the phone or the computer?

  • b00ky

I am a little late to this post. Turns our I am getting a replacement for my busted Droid 1 and it will be a Droid 2.

Being that I wanted to be rooted on my Droid 2 as well, I have a couple questions if anyone has a minute:
    1. If I follow these steps, it seems like this will root me (currently no rooted on the Droid 2) and also installed the rooted Gingerbread release by the time I am all done. Is that correct?
1b. If not, what is the latest, easiest way to Root my Droid 2 when it arrives today – z4root still the way to go?
    2. The links in the above article referring to “D2 Bootstrap” and “D2 Bootstrapper” both refer to the same DL article whcih contains links to a Droid X Bootstrap app. Should I use the Droid X app intentionally or should I use the “Droid 2 Recovery Bootstrap” by Koush/Clockworkmod??? I am thinking the Droid 2 version was the intended app.
    3. I am running Windows 7 64-bit so I will take the advice of others and run RSD Lite 4.8 as Admin. Any other concerns I should be aware of?

    Thanks.

  • Angelw1961

Why are the speakers so unbelievably low??? i can hardly hear anything.

  • Paul

so when i restore my stuff from titanium would i restore the apps with or without data i tried with and it ended bad lol

  • Nick

I was going to but then realised do I have to do the *228 thing and then hit 1? Since that programs your phone doesn’t that cost money? I need a answer soon because I only have the weekends to do this and I don’t want to wait another week.

  • Mcneilmoe

im only 13 and everybody post the stupidest comments “i cant boot up” “fix it for me!” do any of you ppl know what rsd lite is???????????? lol

  • chrissbu

I’ve had a couple of phone calls now, and the volume has been so low I can’t hardly hear the caller at all :( Anyone else having volume issues? I’ve got the in call volume maxed, and the speakerphone doesn’t seem to be working at all.

    • Jodindy

had the same thing, couldnt figure a work around :/ went back to fission after a sbf

    • Jsharp67

Mine did this but it cleared up after a reboot after activation. Scared me though.

      • Wustehase

Used the same thing. Scared me too. Reboot it.

  • Awesomedoscious

I had a bit of trouble with this but after trial and error, I got it up and running this is great. Thanks a lot.

  • The_Lunatic

I loaded this on my girlfriend’s D2, she wants to go back to stock, I did a backup before installing so the question is can I just do a restore to get her back or do I have to use RSD?

Does this work on Droid 2 Global?

  • Anonymous

For anyone having the force close issue with swype beta, found that you also have to remove not just the /system/app/swype.apk but also /system/lib/libSwypeCore.so before you try installing swype beta from the swype website.

  • chrissbu

It’s not working for me…stuck at a white screen :( I installed LauncherPro, but I can’t get into accounts or email or corporate calendars, etc.

Do I need to RSD Lite to go back to the SBF, and then try the unrooted GB? Or can I bootstrap recovery and install the unrooted version?

    • chrissbu

I was able to get into bootstrap recovery, and did a factory reset. Phone rebooted, and seems to be working better now…unforunately, I lost everything in the process. Oh well.

    • Jsharp67

Mine did this. Try booting into recovery. Hold X and power. when you see the little droid, press both volume buttons, select wipe data/cache and use the power button to perfor this operation. Reboot phone and it should take you to the activation screen. Worked on my D2.

  • aj210

This happening to anyone else? When I check my applications in settings, to see how much space an app takes up, there is an error saying “connection problem or invalid MMI code.”

  • Batistadalvy

Ok so everyting is running fine. except i have no service -_- help ??

  • Lonecanislupus

Does this work with the Global?

  • papachi

HELP!!!, RSD is not recognizing my phone… is that step necesary or can i just go ahead and flash the GBrooted.zip on the phone by skiping the RSP step?

  • Destin246

help!!!!!!!! im stuck on a white screen i jus did the gb update and its stuck on a white screen

    • chrissbu

Ditto. Went from froyo to gb root, and update seemed to go OK, but now just a white screen. Can pull down notification bar, but that’s it. Suggestions on how to proceed?

      • chrissbu

I managed to get into the market, and download launcherpro. It looks like “set up” is what is trying to run and is hanging up causing the white screen. Anyone know what this app does?

    • chrissbu

I found I can use voice command to do stuff…but it seems like the launcher is toast :(

    • Jsharp67

Mine did this. Try booting into recover. Hold X and power. when you see the little droid, press both volume buttons, select wipe data/cache and use the power button to perfor this operation. Reboot phone and it should take you to the activation screen. Worked on my D2.

I installed gingerbread last night on my droid 2 it seemed to be working fine. I deleted a few apps which happened to be panda home for my theme and my home screen turned black the only thing i could access was advanced task killer. i managed to get back the D2bootstrap and tried to recover, but now it wont even get passed the motorola logo on the screen. the hard reset wont work on it, after i get to the screen the magnifying glass wont take me to the menu screen. So my Droid 2 now wont go passed the motorola logo, any kind of help would be awesome to even get it back to defaults
