How to: Get Rooted Gingerbread on DROID 2

As many of you know by now, Gingerbread for the DROID 2 and X was released over the weekend giving all of us a taste of Android 2.3.3 and the new blue Blur from Motorola, only there was one thing missing.  Root access.  Well, that problem has now been fixed by our friends over at My Droid World, and we’ve got full instructions for you after the break if you jumped on GB early.  Yep, we walk you through every single step including flashing an SBF file which is something you won’t find anywhere else.

In these instructions, you are essentially reverting back down to Blur build 2.3.20 and then re-upgrading to rooted Gingerbread.  The process looks intense, but again, we outlined every step to help you get there.

Instructions for DROID2:

*WARNING* – You will lose everything on your phone by following the process.  This wipes it all people.

*WARNING 2* – This is NOT for the DROID X. Those instructions are here.

*Note* - If you didn’t jump the gun and flash the non-rooted version and are still running something like say, Liberty ROM, all you have to do is flash the .zip file below just as you would any other ROM.

Download:  Monster_2.3.2_4.5.153_updater_Rooted.zip

*Note Again* – If you have not already upgraded to Gingerbread, simply download the .zip file, flash it like you normally would a ROM, and ignore this entire process.

1.  Download the file from above and drop it on your SD card.
2.  Download the 2.3.20 SBF file for the DX. [Here]
3.  Download,  install and open RSD lite 4.8. [Here]
4.  Plug your phone into your Windows PC and turn your phone off.
5.  Boot into the bootloader by holding Power + Up Arrow.
6.  Your computer will likely install new drivers at this point.
7.  Once RSD lite recognizes your phone, hit the “…” box and choose the 2.3.20 SBF file.
8.  Click “Start.”
9.  When it finishes and gets to 100%, power your phone off.
10.  Boot into recovery by holding Home + X.
11.  When the triangle appears, hit both Volume Up and Down at the same time.
12.  Navigate down to wipe data/factory reset, select it with camera, say “yes.”
13.  When it finishes, reboot your phone.
14.  Download z4root 1.3.0 and root your phone.
15.  Download D2 Bootstrap and bootstrap your recovery.
16.  Reboot into recovery.
17.  Choose “install zip from sd card”, “choose”, then the Monster_2.3.2_Rooted.zip.
18.  Your phone will now install Gingerbread with root.
19.  When you reboot, your phone will appear to bootloop.  Let it.
20.  If it does it for say, 5 minutes, just pull your battery and reboot.
21.  To Boostrap after installing Gingerbread, you’ll need to use the D2 Bootstrapper.
22.  Enjoy!

I tried but failed. Now I’m flashing with RSDLite. I’ll try once more after this.

      • Craigg

Were you ever successful at installing it on your D2 Global, Bent0s?

I am needing some help on this one. On step 9, it gets to 99% then says “Fail”. What am I doing wrong and what do I do to get past this step?

I jumped the gun on the unrooted Gingerbread and now I can’t SBF into my phone. RSDlite doesn’t seem to be working. (it doesn’t detect my phone once it goes into bootloader mode) It detects it just fine while the phone is on, but once it goes into bootloader mode, it disconnects. I’m using the latest moto drivers and RSDlite.

Is there any other way of rooting this besides SBFing?

If on win7 hold down the shift key and right click on rsdlite. Then click run as administrator and your phone should show up.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jonathan-Ellis/38913298 Jonathan Ellis

Ok finally back. Pushing random buttons got the blue recovery menu to come up. This let me pick up at step 13 and finish the process. BTW I had Win 7 64bit. Which mens you have to hold shift then right click rsd lite and run as administrator.

When I tried flashing on droid 2 using Rds lite and the file above I get an error that says failed flashing progress. Then phone reboots over and over. I tried 1) flashing in rds again. 2) Booting into recovery to wipe, but it wont bring up the menu when I press both volume keys. Any suggestions?

whats your windows version? I had same issue with 64bit windows 7, but when i did it on an xp machine I had no problems

So hopefully Droid X root soon? I’ve been holding off on upgrading to the Gingerbread leak simply because I can’t lose my wireless tether.

This rom is pre-rooted. You won’t lose any root functionality by installing this rom.

  • aj316

Got it all installed, every time I plug the phone in to be charged, then unplug it, I lose network connection and have to reboot. Makes this useless to me.

Will you still have gingerbread profiles etc.if you put ADW launcher on top

  • BigRed4X15

So I have two issues with GB, first swype is not working, says the package is not configured for this phone. The second issue is that my sync arrows are on constantly and my phone seems a little slow. Any ideas?

    • Sid6871

Tried swipe as well. No luck, using slideit. Also have the issue with the sync arrows. Have tried disabling and enabling sync, and resetting.

      • Blitz

My sync arrows eventually went away after 1-2 hours so maybe see if they go away. As for swype, has anyone found a solution to this? The only thing I can think of is removing the swype that came with the phone and installing the latest beta version.

    • Videospy

I could not get swype to work so unistaller and installed Beta swype worked great until I rebooted phone now keeps foreclosing…

  • Destin246

Do I have to download this on my computer or can I download it on my phone?

  • http://twitter.com/tb110895 Tom Burke

    • CaptainHowdy13

  • Mr. Steve

Everything went fine with the update, but now my Google account is not pulling in all of my applications, any ideas?

    • CaptainHowdy13

Some of my applications werent on the market at all like MLB at bat

      • Mr. Steve

I noticed that. But none of my applications came over at all. I think it’s because I didn’t sign out of my Google account before I wiped everything.

Thanks! Successfully Gingerbreaded and rooted on my D2! Even got rid of that pesky haptic feedback I couldnt get rid of before!

  • Brutalsnowman

Lets see how many times we can ask the same question in one post. Droid X users are obsessed with the background D2G users want some GB I don’t blame you… but you can NOT have it… yet!

    • Anonymous

So what you are saying is that this doesn’t work on the D2G yet?
Kidding aside I have one and jealous of everyone with a D2 now.

  • Lawless21

Does this work on the Droid 2 Global? Anyone working on that?

    • Brutalsnowman

No. will brick it at least to the point of having to SBF your phone

  • Raven

This may be a dumb question, but does this all work for the Droid 2 Global as well? I have always been a little unsure about what, if any, ROM differences there were between the original Droid 2 and the Droid 2 Global.

    • Brutalsnowman

      No. will brick it

  • http://profiles.google.com/faceonahead martyn wright

Will it work on global version of droid 2, i.e. milestone2 motoA953

  • Jodindy

was runnin fission and flashed just as instructed and now i have bootloop and cannot get into recovery :/

    • Anonymous

Wipe the data and clear the cache. That fixed it for me the first time around

same thing happened to me. any resolution?

  • Adam Metzner

Anyone have a mirror for the bootstrap? Koush’s server seems to have fallen to the droid-life effect.

I had 74 bit version and I had problems, the start button was grayed out. Make sure to place the .sbf file in the c: directory and also make the name shorter. I used abc.sbf and finally you need to run rsd lite as the administrator (right click while holding shift) hope this works.

      • Anonymous

I ran into the same issue with the start button being greyed out, thanks shortening the filename does the trick.

  • eric

    what about mac??

  • tjhrulz

The rooted 2.3 download is down

    • tjhrulz

never mind must have been with the site, it said it was down reload fixed it.

  • BigRed4X15

Help Please, when I select the file in RSD the start button is not selectable. The phone is listed as “S Flash OMAP3630 MI”, is that correct?

  • Jshulmire33

I dowloaded the file and two showed up in astro, a .zip file and an updater file. Normal?

  • BigRed4X15

Does this fix the problem with adding apps to the home screen? On the current version when you long press an app in the drawer and click add to home it doesn’t work.

    • Harrisons004

It worked fine for me on the old version. I could add the by doing that.

  • CaptainHowdy13

It is great, I want an official release… Only reason I am no sticking with it is because some of my most used apps aren’t available :(

Would this be the same for the D2 Global?

    • Anonymous

No. It will brick(at least to the point of having to SBF) your phone. Same with the r2d2.

      • Anonymous

        Thanks!

      • Eulises

not true, i just tried it and it worked perfectly.

          droid 2 global?

        • Nic

I got anxious and tried and bricked mine.  I did have to sbf to recover.  It went all the way to the end but then failed to update something, i think with the radio, and then aborted and voila… brick.
