CircleLauncher is Easily the App of the Week

Now here is an app deserving of a Friday send off.  CircleLauncher, has been on my phone for all of 10 minutes and I can’t get enough of it.  The app allows you to attach up to 9 (recommended) of your favorite apps or contacts and display them in a beautiful, yet functional manner.  You have color options, layout options, label options and we’re guessing this is only the beginning.  CircleLauncher has only been out for 3 days, but it looks like it’s had 6 months worth of polishing.  I went with the circle layout, but there are horizontal and vertical styles that look just as spectacular.  For those of us loving a minimalist homescreen, this surely helps.

I should probably add a note about this being a widget and not a “launcher.”  We wouldn’t want the LauncherPro and ADW fanatics getting all hot and bothered, would we?

There is a lite version, but the full version will only set you back about $1.20.

I love Droid-life and and I love this app!!

what launcher is that phone using? How did you get the message app to just say messages and same with the gmail and the phone.

    • DBK

It’s a minimalist launcher, so I guess search for it (don’t know much more than that, sorry).

The dock background was posted a couple of days ago here on droid-life – there are several colors, etc to choose from. It works with Launcher Pro or Go Launcher, with the transparent icon from Launcher Pro Icons.

I like it. Tried it for a bit, but switched back to SIMI folder widget. The dev just updated it, and it gives you most of the functions of Circlelauncher’s paid app, and the recent update made it a lot faster than circlelauncher as well. Best of all, its free. The only difference between the two apps, the paid Circle Launcher and Simi Folder Widget now, is that Simi does not do circle launch, but does do both vertical and horizontal launch. Plus, you get to pick a custom icon for your widget, all free.

    • DBK

The paid version lets you choose your own icons, too. Plus CircleLauncher is fast, at least for me. You must be putting a lot of apps on it. $1.20 isn’t asking much for a simple widget, either.

this widget is tight as hell, way better then folders, i just wish i could put bookmarks in it… i put smashed 16 games into one, with the “tiny labels” its still easier to navigate then a folder

  • UFISH2

i could’nt get the lite version to work either..plus how do get a avatar or pic to post by your name?

I cant seem to get it configured. It never actually loads onto the home screen.

    • http://perpetualn00b.tumblr.com quiklives

I had this problem too. You have to hit “back” repeatedly to get back to the home screen instead of home.

  • Bmylonas

This is great for cleaning up clutter. You can use multiple circle widgets on each screen. For example one for games, one for music, one for news apps, etc….. Cleans ups the screen and makes everything accesible without having to open app drawer.

    • DBK

Lol that’s exactly how I used it. :P

ok i want to know what your using your dock, that looks sweet with just the words at the bottum

Has anyone else noticed that if you add Angrybirds to the Circlelauncher, the icons double exponentially every time you open the launcher? Looks cool, but sucks.

    • DBK

Yep, happens to me too (Droid 2). And it force closes on me when that happens. -_-

Does it only happen with angry birds/angry birds seasonal? I haven’t tried it w/o Birds yet.

      • Anonymous

        So far just with angrybirds

        • DBK

That’s a relief. Thanks for the response.

Yep, just noticed that about an hour ago. Not very good. Under $1.50, it’s okay, but then again, with this many issues(icons multiplying, force closing, etc), it should be free..at least until they fix these issues.

      • DBK

There is a free version. I would use that version until the fixes are made.

    • DBK

Just finished trying it with every app I have (sans angry birds) and it works perfectly. Once the bugs are fixed (angry birds needs some love), and (hopefully) a few more options are made available (a static option, maybe, so the apps stay out without having to press the button) and I would definitely buy.

Oh, and it looks really cool, and more organized, without the labels. Just a thought.

Oh and this is a good widget. The paid version allows you to use your own icon rather than a preselected icon. Cheers Droid-Life!

    A launcher on a launcher… Genius!

  • Jay

I like the idea, but getting a weird bug–I put Angry Birds and Angry Birds Seasons into a Circle Launcher. First launch great. Second launch had two of each icon. Then 4, then 8, etc.

    • Andrew Hewitt

Same with me, I was just about to post this comment and see if anyone else was having the same problem with the angry birds thing. It was kinda fun to do it over and over to see them multiply, and then I got over it and got my refund.

      • Anonymous

I actual posted my comment about this same problem before reading any posts, LOL.

I am using the lite version, do you know if this bug affects the pro version too?

        • Anonymous

it does, i had like 10 of each. wack.

          • Anonymous

Many launching/folder apps have problems with angry birds. rovio should really change the title of seasons, having two app icons with the same names screws things up. miui folders crash in alphabetic mode if both are in there.

          • Anonymous

Tried this without angry birds. Same problem.no refund =fail. Sorry kellex, very dissapointed.

          • DBK

Your lying. I tried it with every app I have -sans angry birds- (and I have a good variety of apps), and it works perfectly. You should have tried the free version first. PAKmann2k = fail.

Oh, and kellex = god (for future reference).

  • Irish22022

it’s cool. If you like this, check out UltimateFavesPro. It’s the same idea, but has been out for upwards of a year, for some reason nobody talks about it. It’s very cool. Will try circle launcher soon, but I’m pretty happy with simi folders for things like this. Just looks more organized, and comes with nice icon options for us minimalists.

    • Dckelly11

      Thanks. I like the ultimatefavspro.

      • Irish22022

I never got any force closes personally. The lag time has improved over time, it’s now gotten pretty good. The free version is the same as paid, just limits the carousels. Give it a go. He’s introduced icon packs which aren’t cool, but if you have icons of your own, it sets it off nicely.

It’s also nice because you can put anything you want in the carousel, not just apps and contacts. Bookmarks, any android activity, direct dials, etc…

    • Anonymous

I always found that app to be laggy and it seemed to force close all the time. Haven’t used it in a long time, has it improved much?

  • Jossi Cruz

This would be cool if there was an animation when you pressed the widget. For now I’ll stick with simi folder widgets. I’m a sucker for any kind of animation.

  • Bump47

I wish you didny have to click on the circle to pull up all the apps…I wish the apps would just stay in the circular pattern for you to select

  • alynd

How do I get the clock in word form like is shown in the screen shot on this post?

    • Irish22022

there are a number of options for that. Check out “clockr” or “minimalistic text”. The latter has more customizable options, but may be a bit harder to understand.

im running liberty rom, but it says version 2.2.1? is there a reason why, b/c i was on 2.3.2…..droid 2. also is antone else having camera issues, pics wont save….

    • Irish22022

i’m not, but maybe check out the liberty toolbox (dl from market if you haven’t already). in there you’ll find add-ons, one of them being the blur camera, so you can try that one instead.

  • Anonymous

    Very cool!

  • shr1k3r

wow. I have been waiting for someone to do exactly this…thanks for sharing it!

  • Jabrnet

What does the paid version offer that the free version doesn’t? They look the same to me…

    • Anonymous

So far, it looks like you need the paid version to use the horizontal or vertical bar style.

    • Carpatus

Also to be able to use your own images instead of the circles.

  • Anonymous

It isn’t showing up in the market for me – either by searching for it or using the link on here.

…exactly what I was thinking. I’ve become so used to using the scrollable dock to the point that it would just be weird not to have it.

That’s the beauty of Android…to each his/her own.

“I should probably add a note about this being a widget and not a “launcher.” We wouldn’t want the LauncherPro and ADW fanatics getting all hot and bothered, would we?”

You know…that’s exactly what I thought, CircleLauncher being an actual launcher and not a widget. I was like… “Noo…I like LauncherPro too much to give it up for yet another launcher, even as magnificent as CircleLauncher is.” Then I was relieved when you mentioned it being a widget. Sweet!

Okay, I’m off to download this sweet piece of as..err, app!

    • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

Correction: I guess others have been saying that Angry Birds is the only game/app that is causing the multiple icons. If that is the case, then I retract what I said above.

There is one other thing though, the App listing should be alphabetized. It would make looking for specific apps much, much easier.

      Indeed it is.

looks nice but I can see it already the launcher will redraw more frequently and at it is annoying already as it is.
