No Path to Official DROIDX Update Coming from Motorola for Leaked 2.2 Users

Motorola doesn’t appear to want to follow in the steps of HTC when it comes to updating to Froyo.  If you remember, during the series of leaked Android 2.2 builds for the EVO, HTC was doing their best to create patches and fixes to early adoptees that were having trouble updating to their official release.  Moto on the other hand, appears to be taking the other path which could explain their prompt spraying of C&D letters to anyone hosting the leaked 2.2 for the Droid X from 10 days ago.

The Motorola Support Forums mentioned the following today…

WARNING: Do NOT load the leaked 2.2 upgrade that has been floating around on the Internets. There is currently no upgrade path from that load to the official 2.2 load that will be released by early September. Unless you have some plan to flash your phone back to the current official load, you could be stuck on the leaked version.

Let me just say that we warned you twice about this, so if you are getting all red and out of breath with droplets of sweat beginning to form on your forehead, stop now.  There are risks involved in the flashing of any leaked Android update and we make that as clear as can be.

But not to leave you hanging, we figured we should probably give you some instructions on how to get back to 2.1 so that you can receive the official 2.2 and save yourself from an aneurysm. Stay tuned for those…

Oh yeah, and that note also mentions an “early September” release which could mean as early as this weekend?

Cheers Rodney!

“The gift” comes from Phoxus. The guy who posted about 7 lines above you. Just FYI. He also linked to it again half way up the page. On a funny note, I came in here tonight because I had a bits of a time finding these files after MOTO went ape a week or two ago and I wanted to repay the favor and offer to post these files for anyone in need. As fate would turn out, Phoxus is right here in this forum, sharing his files again. Phoxus, you saved my a$$ with these files. I was pretty po'd to lose root and using adb is not my cup of tea. The ability to return to stock is always a great one. With my D1, I constantly was in need of a good sbf. (I can't help but tinker until something goes awry.) Like my home PC, every now and then, I like to start over from scratch.

Kellex, It's time to post a blog and educate these NOOBS about Android. Everyone is screaming murder, well almost everyone. And unfortunately people are reading what the “Smart Ones” say. I don't know if they read at all for that matter.

Now might be a good time to make a post re-educating the newer droid users about the history of DROID and Android OS. Some of these people are completely ignorant. I know we can't cure that problem, but we can definitely help put out a Anti-biotic to help cure some ignorance out there.

  • http://profile.livedoor.com/yangj08/ Jamar

At this point, I'm not sure how highly they regard the US market anymore. Like many others, they seem to be focusing on China with exclusive high-end models and specials there. Yeah, they won't be missing you. As long as the ones with more money keep buying Moto…

  • Ufish2

I update my X to 2.2 got everything except wifi tetering and unlocked 3g hotspot, but lost root(easyroot)..my droid runs great..just waiting for another 1 click way to root again,,going to wait untill OTA update comes out and see what happens….sounds like BS from moto and if thats the way it goes then..root and rom's for me…:)

  • Djspikezz

I understand your frustration, however this is emotionally charged and you all are in panic mode. It's like CNN, they say 1 billion eggs are recalled and every FREAKIN panics. 1 Billion eggs recalled is less then 1% of the total eggs out there on the market.

My point? CHILL OUT. That great community that was created from Milestone/Droid 1 is helping a lot. And honestly, even if it didn't. I myself Own a Droid X and upgraded to that phone after having the Droid 1 for only 8 months. And I got verizon to upgrade me early. You heard right. Do your research before you panic and cry wolf. Yeah 14 idiots liked your post.

Yeah I don't like what Moto is doing with Motoblur. We bought the phone for the quality of the phone.. and the quality of the Android OS which Google created.

I'll say it again as I have in 3 other posts… Want to know why Android 2.2 (froyo) is taking soo long to get out to various devices? Well first off, Android 2.2 was finished a long time ago and the final OS was shipped to the various cell phone manufacturers, HTC, MOTO, Samsung, etc…. Once they get the OS, their company then gives the OS to their developers to set up for the specific phones. Android 2.2 has been indeed nerfed/tweeked/adjusted by the manufacturers. The good news? Because of Linux, open source and the “DNA of Manufactures doing” being discovered we'll be as happy as we were with Droid 1.

Everyone's too impatient. Droid X came out in July, Droid 2 in August. Droid X first ROM already out within slightly less then 2 months. Not bad.

Agree with me or Disagree. Get better educated on this stuff before you freak out and “Cry Wolf”

  • Djspikezz

LOL. CHILL THE )#@()*$ OUT! There's a .SBF file that turns your phone back into out of box stock.

IF THIS STILL DOESN'T MAKE SENCE, THINK OF IT THIS WAY…. THE .SBF FILE = THE MAGIC WAND THAT RETURNS YOUR PHONE TO IT'S OUT OF BOX STATE. Your fine.. so stop trippin out.

SELL YOUR PHONE AND LOSE THE BEST DROID PHONE ON THE MARKET (currently) HANDS DOWN.

  • Djspikezz

The Droid X Froyo 2.2 leak is damn close to what we'll see when the OTA comes, Directly quoted from a Google Android Team Development. The reason why the OTA's take forever is that the Froyo goes to HTC, MOTO, Samsung etc, Then their developers do their tweaks and things to it so it is still “their's” (think Motoblur).

Enough said on it, just stating some very true statements. The official release will be great but don't expect huge changes. I mentioned the quadrant scores of the Droid X running the leaked Froyo to this friend on mine from google and he said that sounds about right.. (1350-1450 quadrant score stock with froyo).

  • http://twitter.com/DroidEmperor R R

I found the bootloader by @koush to get into clockworkmod extremely buggy. i would try to reboot into clockworkmod from the app and from rom manager and it would be hit or miss and then when starting up my x it would flash on the M logo forever. i would have to leave the phone off for about 2 minutes and then it would boot back into the phone. i created a nandroid backup with a deodexed rooted 2.2 x, but couldn't access it because i couldn't get into freaking clockworkmod! so i said piss it all and SBF'd (for probably the 5th or 6th time since i've had the x) and now i'm running un-rooted 2.1-update 1 and i rejoiced when i saw that I would be on the path to a legit froyo upgrade. i'm sick of wasting my time dealing with rooted BS. it's a good phone in stock and i'm not going to waste any more time messing with it.

No surprises here. Does anyone expect Motorola to provide upgrade paths from all non-official ROMs?

Im with everyone saying this will be my last moto phone. I never thought id be so disappointed in moto seeing as how I've told everyone I know in to buy these phones over and over and over. Im not worried one bit that this community will get us back on track but as far as motoapple goes I think its the next 4/3 monster from htc or others ill be switching to

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Philip-Kaiser/534959394 Philip Kaiser

For anyone who can't figure out how to go back to stock, go half way into this forum and download the files from Phonux's link. Then, if this is all greek to you, google search, “unbricking your Droid X”. The page explains step by step ion how to go back to stock. For those of you who decided to “tinker” before doing your homework, you will find that MOTO has asked for all of it's files to be removed from websites. This is why the website with the instructions on using the RSDlite and SBF doesn't actually have the files hosted.

Who are you threatening with the 10 peeps? This isn't a VZW or MOTO website.

I am new to android, I was a blackberry owner for years. I love this community and I am learning so much about my phone. I freed myself from the shackles of stock weeks ago and I'm beginning to see how awesome this community helps me make my phone. I am so appreciative of all who spend thier precious time “sticking it to the Man”. And i hope that I can be as helpful to newbies one day as everyone has been to me. Thank you for the Jpeg pic! I'll put it to good use ;)

  • Scea0512

Yeah the hell with the leaked crap that is out there , I will wait for the real deal direct from Motorola or verizon , why everyone is in such a rush is beyond me especially I doint see anything earth shattering in the 2.2 version anyway with the exception of flash and I dont care for that at all

    • guest

who do you think the leaked version came from…Santa? Besides, JIT is awesome, along with all the other small improvements that come with 2.2. Just because you dont see the improvements 2.2 brings doesnt mean there arent any.

      • Jacobsonster

That and using the leak is the only way to keep my wifi from randomly disconnecting. Why such a rush? I want it to function like it's suppose to!

  • J. Ryan

Motorola is pushing me (and others in the community like myself) farther and farther away with their attitude. My primary reason for switching to the Droid X was the success and unbridled possibilities of the original Droid. I feel almost as if Moto pulled the ole bait-n-switch on us. They release the Droid and allow the users to do as they please. This develops a thriving Android Dev community that I very much enjoy being a part of. Now they release the X/2 and try to brick up the windows on us.

I don't know what they're thinking, but all my positive word of mouth will be coming to an end starting now. I love my Droid X, but Moto can take a long walk with their garbage, greedy attitude and restrictions. I paid full price for my X and I will do as I please. I acknowledge the risks, but have faith in my own capabilities and those of the Devs who put in so much work on these phones.

In short, kiss my ass, Motorola. You will learn in the long run that making things difficult for your users will not get you far in the Android game. HTC – here I come next summer.

Perhaps you replied to the wrong person? I never once complained about how long Moto is taking to release 2.2. I installed 2.2 three hours after it was released last week. I'm not crying wolf. I'm simply stating my stance on Motorola's lockdown of their phones.

        • Blackheart

I’ll say this. Not all phones are supposed to be tampered and done with whatever you want with them. It’s a cell phone when it comes down to it. Yeah so the DROID was the beginning of a completely new era of users, BUT! Why should they have to continue to keep making phones for the same community the way THEY want them made? I highly doubt they expected for there to be a dev community to be developed out of the DROID… So just cause one was sparked that means to continue to make phones adjusted to their means? Oh please. Some people like phones just the way they are, if others decide they want to do extra then you do it on your own terms. It’s like a computer. You do what you want on the internet till your ISP says stop of they yank your service. Likewise for phones. You want to jailbreak, unroot, etc. Then fine, you do too much you brick your phone. Lol. It’s not a free country, I thought you all knew that already.

          • Angad Singh

I love script kiddy flashers… seriously you flashed your phone to 2.2 and need easy instructions on fixing it? You are missing the point of rooting… FYI unleashing the fury of caps lock is only getting most people to ignore your posts… regardless of how many times you repeat it.

    “Internets” ??

Are we sure this wasn't a hacked post by some 7th grader on their family computer when their “Moms” wasn't looking?

Moto: Keep your Moto-Bloat… err Blur garbage. I'll keep the leaked build and upgrade to the upcoming vanilla 2.2 that has none of your junk-ware cluttering up the place.

Next devices: Not another Motorola, that's for sure.

All the kewl kids are saying “internets” -or- “interwebs”
Jeez… get on the trolley already. ;)

My bad. I’ve been lagging on watching the last 17 years of MTV shows. Last time I watched it was when there was actually MUSIC on ‘MUSIC TELEVISION’. :)

Time to pop in “Yo, MTV Raps! season 1″ and maraton up to “Cribz” season 14.

    • BAoxymoron

I agree with you on points 2 and 3(well sort of on 3), but as for point one it could have also easily been posted by an older person who might be stuck in the idea of the internet as many computers and servers as opposed to one all encompassing “internet”… all admit far fetched but a possibility

scroll up and read the replys to this post. there is a way to do it listed on here already. you have to have RSD lite 4.7 and the SBF file. read the post comments and you can find the way to do it… right here on this page.

  • Steve

wont there just be a update.zip file thats gonna leak before its released? seems to be the way it always works right?

    • V4npro

Will this work? If so, then I won't bother re-flashing to 2.1.

im waiting, im having my faith on DL :)

Yeah, I'm going to wait too. Can always flash back to 2.1 in the future if a update.zip doesn't come out or doesn't work. (hope it does)

  • dannyjedi

Plus I am sure our friends at DROID LIFE will put the whole official update.zip on DL as soon as it comes out.
    :)

  • Ebbressi

I am currently thinking of going with the HTC Droid Incredible or the other HTC evo that was leaked for verizon. This is crazy

    • EggoEspada

Right. Was just about to pick up a Droid X in a few weeks. Now I'm not sure…

      • http://twitter.com/jasonangle Jason Angle

Yeah I just got mine last week, got RSD updated, rooted it and bootstrapped it the same day… I do not plan to backtrack though once the dump is picked up and reviewed one of the real providers of Android patches will sort the mess out and get an upgrade to whatever changes they made. Not concerned about Moto's bully tactics.

  • Breakmyfootoff

I wont buy another Motoapple until they stop all this BS. My X will be for sale as soon as I can get a Fascinate!

  • http://twitter.com/jasonangle Jason Angle

Yeah Motorola is going the wrong direction in their actions to the root/custom community (would wager we are the ones that give the best word of mouth advertising) They keep this up and I will be switching to HTC who does support us. Don't get me wrong I love my Droid X but the upcoming Evo like HTC device has my eye for the wifey's upgrade…

  • Bigdoug

For the life of me I cannot understand why anyone would flash their droid phone with a leaked version of the new os. I can think of so many more interesting things to do than possibly f>”? up my new toy with something official which will be out soon anyway. If it were a cfw with added benefits (which, because of 'root' you don't need) I could almost understand.

The reason why people have done it is because froyo is much, much better than eclair. As simple as that. And incidentally, the leaked froyo won't render the phone useless, just buggy at most. The only bad thing is that you might be stuck with the leaked version. Besides, with the bootstrap app from Koush now you can adventure into new ROM territory

Froyo is better than Eclair, but you should have waited for manufacturer official release. C’mon now… let’s be realistic about this. Moto and every other manufacturer is in this for the win. How do you like your phone, fast and stable or fast and buggy? I’m really dumbfounded by the “givemeeverythingfree” mentality. You live in a capitalistic society, know why that is important? Because if you ever have an original idea in your head you’re going to want to do 1 of 2 things, keep it to yourself or patent the shit out of it and make $$$. Guess which one your country’s built upon?

I am an unrooted Droid X owner who updated to the leaked 2.2 and my phone runs MUCH smoother and with a lot less bugs now. The 2.1 that shipped on the Droid X was just okay, but the leaked 2.2 is much more refined. Much smoother scrolling, better interface design, and most of all my phone doesn’t randomly reboot anymore. So all of these people who didn’t download the leaked 2.2 to try it, who want to say that they don’t want to ruin their phones for a buggier OS, you’re missing out. But ignorance is bliss, right?

    • Tabe

You’re kidding, right? F up your new toy? LOL
When you have the ability to flash back to stock at any time, I don’t see how you’re F’ing anything up… I guess you just don’t know what you’re talking about.

No bugs on my phone with leaked 2.2 super fast never crashes and it is not screwed up my phone i can go back to stock anytime with the sbf it so easy to do well enjoy your nonflash phone until verizon releases it oh yeah it is currenlty in testing lol I think that means a month or so i dont believe this early sept stuff

Let's get this straight Moto the only reason I bought the X is because of Birdmans and Koush's work, once we had a recovery there is no reason to ever want another update from you. We know have Pete(Bugless Beast), Chevy(Simply Stunning) and soon CVPCS(Sapphire) all developing Roms for the X…and I am sure more developers are on their way. Take your attitude and scare tactics that we can't go backwards for your updates…We could if we WANTED to…but there is no reason to. Have fun Moto, I am with my Rooted, Bootstrapped and full of Froyo Droid X.
Maybe you should get with the program and follow in Samsungs and HTC's footsteps, they don't play your games with encryption…Do you remember how you got to this point in the Android phone world already? It was a phone you didn't encrypt the Droid that put you back on the map.

      Yeah so take that moto

Could Motorola's stance be attributed to their new corporate overlords, Nokia?

    • Guest

      Um, what?

Yeah, if you read that, they didn't buy Motorola, they bought their network equipment unit. Motorola, especially the Handset unit that we're concerned with, is still independent. :)

        • The350zWolf

WOW, now this is really news!

  • Douche

I don't care about not being able to get pushed the OTA update, I'm sure we'll have an update.zip of the official build two days before the OTA gets pushed out anyways…

  • Chris Nimon

That seems rather unprofessional for an official motorola blog. oh well, it fits with the way they've been treating their customers lately. That reminds me, Thanks Kellex for the story on the Samsung. :)

  • Timoh

Unless they update the Kernel or decide to enable JIT in the official release I doubt there will be much reason to flash back to 2.1.

I did prepare though, made sure I got the official 2.1 flash file before I updated to 2.2. Not such a big deal.

It wouldn't one bit surprise me if Moto “leaked” the other 2.2 update to see how it would be hacked.

    • FSRBIKER

You will always have a better performing phone being rooted and running a custom Rom.

    • http://wadeivy.com Phoxus

the leaked release has JIT enabled. however a simple edit in build prop titled stagefright (means nothing really) will show you true results for linpack/quandrant.
Neither of which can be used to tell whether a phone is truly good.

  • MMM770

I was literally just looking up the article to get the leaked version. Thank Droid I didn't do it! :-P

Motorola is really pissing me off, i don't know about cliq owners but they are bunch of bull sh!T.

  • dannyjedi

I mean, cant you just restore the phone under system settings? then get the OTA update?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1276930574 Rikayah Johnson

No, if you upgraded to the leak version of 2.2 and you do a factory restore, all of your data will be wiped, but your OS will still be on 2.2, to get back to 2.1 you have to reinstall it from a file.

  • dannyjedi

Hahaha I don't mind flashing my phone back to 2.1 F it… lets make it happen baby!!!! :)

  • Phillip818

cant you use RSD lite to go back to 2.1, or wait on a system dump from the new update from motorola?? then we can get an update.zip for it when it comes out and have the official 2.2 update??

  • Kaufkin

you mean here is RISK in rooting? ;-)

    • Kaufkin

See! I didn't Say First, Huzzah!, or anything silly like that. so there. ;-P
