How to: Root DROID X Running Official Android 2.2

by: | posted 09.22.10 | DROIDX, News, Root

Since so many of you are curious about having a rooted device, then you’ll be pleased to know that the Droid 2 rooting method works flawlessly on the official update for the Droid X.  In even better news, the crew at XDA Forums have created a semi-1-click method so that you no longer have to use a series of adb commands.  You will still have to install the Android SDK, but that’s nothing right?

Instructions:

Download: DoRootForWindows.zip

1.  Extract and Update Android SDK package to your computer.  (Our instructions here.)
2.  Next, extract the files from the DORoot zip file to the tools folder of Android SDK.

(Take them out of the folder they came zipped in and place in tools.)

Ex:  C:\android-sdk-windows\tools

3.  Install Motorola Drivers:  (32-bit or 64-bit)
4.  Enable USB Debugging on your phone and plug it into your PC.  (Settings>Applications>Development)
5.  Double-click and run doroot.bat
6.  Let it run.
7.  It will let you know if it has finished completely.
8.  Reboot your phone and you are rooted!

If these instructions don’t seem all that clear, follow the step-by-step guide which includes adb commands.  Our instructional post can be found here.

Video: DROID X Android 2.2 Walkthrough

by: | posted 09.22.10 | News, Videos

With the official Android 2.2 update for the Droid X coming out last night at midnight instead of noon today like we all were told it would, we had a chance to whip together a quick walkthrough!  This isn’t your typical Froyo overview since those have been done dozens of times by now, but I did cover some of the highlights which you’ll enjoy with this newly updated OS.

DROID X Android 2.2 Update is Live Now!

by: | posted 09.21.10 | News

Unless it has been pulled this morning, the official Droid X Android 2.2 update is live right now!  We will not be searching for a manual update method since the update can be manually pulled to your device at any time.  To pull it to your device go to:

Settings>About>System Updates

Go! Go! Go!

IMPORTANT UPDATE:  Apparently once you have updated to the official OTA 2.2, you will no longer be able to use the 2.1 SBF that’s in the wild (Not the leak, the actual OTA update).  There is a good chance it will brick your phone.  So that means if you update to official 2.2, you are stuck there.  It’s OK though, because we can root it.  Just be warned!  (via birdman)

Breaking: DROID X Android 2.2 Update Starting Tomorrow at 12PM EST

by: | posted 09.21.10 | Breaking, News

Just as we said yesterday, the Droid X 2.2 update will be released tomorrow to the masses.  The update will become available at 12:00PM EST giving any user with a DX the opportunity to “pull” the update manually.  Yep, just as we talked about at the beginning of the month, Blur does have one major benefit and that’s the ability to pull updates rather than forcing users to wait for them to be “pushed” to their devices.

To have your phone check for the update visit the following screen:

Settings>About>System Updates

At noon tomorrow, or 9:00AM here on the west coast, the update should be waiting for you.  Oh, you can stop checking for updates now.  Might as well wait until tomorrow.  :-)

How to: Return DROID X Back to Android 2.1

by: | posted 09.21.10 | DROIDX, Root, Tips

For those not wanting to remain rooted, you are probably looking for a way to return from the leaked Android 2.2 update for the Droid X back  to stock 2.1 so that you can receive the update which we are expecting some time this week.  I’ll just say up front that you will lose root access by doing this and there is a chance that rooting official 2.2 may be difficult, so think this over carefully.  Still ready to go?

DROID X Android 2.2 Update is Ready, According to Verizon

by: | posted 09.21.10 | News

The Verizon support page for the Droid X has now been updated to show that Android 2.2 is finally ready for launch.  Wait, didn’t we just say yesterday that it would be coming on Wednesday?  Yes, yes we did.  I’d say right now that 9/22 looks pretty likely at this point.

Rumor: DROID X Android 2.2 Update Launching 9/22?

by: | posted 09.20.10 | News

Another Droid X 2.2 rumor!  The latest comes from level 2 Motorola support which normally would mean absolutely nothing, but when these service reps drop a few extra details in their conversations, sometimes they are worth at least a little mention.  Here is what we’ve got…

We know that Verizon and Motorola have stood by a “late summer” release timeline which if we’re getting really technical, would mean they have 2-3 days left to drop this on us.  What we also know is that the Droid X on 2.1 has some major exchange issues which caused Motorola to hook up DX business users with Touchdown licenses to pass the time until Android 2.2 is released.  When you put these 2 together, this is where we get interested.

One of our readers, needing Touchdown, had to call Motorola after not receiving his free license.  He was then told that Moto is out of Touchdown licenses and they are waiting until after the 2.2 update hits before they plan on replenishing license stock.  And when did he expect the update to hit?  September 22nd.  The last day of summer.  Two days from now.

Again, a rumor from tech support, so take it for what it’s worth.

On a related note, I can tell you that I’ve reached out to both Verizon and Motorola PR and received essentially the same answer.  They are working on the update and expect it to be ready “soon.”

Rather than crossing fingers, let’s cross shoe strings or something?

Cheers sonic!
