by: | posted 01.19.12 | News

Do you sometimes feel that your phone just isn’t as secure as it should be? Then allow me to introduce Security Enhanced Android (SEA), brought to you by the wonderful folks over at the National Security Agency (NSA). Taken from the AOSP and then beefed up to withstand any type of security breach, SEA is invulnerable to most types of malicious 3rd party apps that most people would fear.

Nike Introduces the FuelBand as the Next Fitness Trend, Android Compatibility on the Way

by: | posted 01.19.12 | News, Videos

The latest in active/exercise tech was introduced today by Nike. The product is called the Nike+ FuelBand and looks similar to those LiveStrong wrist bands that took the world by storm for an extended period of time, only it’s much more advanced. The idea behind it is similar to what you can find in FitBit, except that it introduces a new way to measure your daily activity, NikeFuel. It’s really a glorified marketing term, but the idea is that your Fuel score should “motivate” you to do more throughout the day. Whether you are running, walking, crawling, flipping or waving your warms around, your Fuel score is being calculated. Not only that though, you can also track calories and steps taken which are displayed on the band through an LED light panel.

The product is Android-related in the sense that an app to co-exist with your Fuel score and progress will be available soon. At launch, February 22, there will be an iOS app, however, Nike has already said that an Android version is on the way. The product will retail for $149.

Is that the MotoActv I hear crying in the corner? Actually that’s not completely fair since the FuelBand does not have a built-in MP3 player. Might be time to drop that price a tad though Moto, as Nike is one athletic master you do not want to battle.

Google: 11 Billion App Downloads, Over 250 Million Total Android Devices Activated

by: | posted 01.19.12 | News

During Google’s Q4 earnings call that is live right now, CEO Larry Page gave us some new Android numbers to twist our brains over. As you already know, over 700,000 devices are activated every day and that 3.7 million were activated during the X-mas holiday weekend. To add to those though, Page announced that over 250 million devices have been activated to date (up 50 million since a November announcement). And to top that off, 10 billion apps have been downloaded in the market.

On related note, Google+ now has over 90 million users. That’s over double what they announced in Q3.

Might Want to Find a New Place to Host Your ROMs, MegaUpload Shut Down by the Feds

by: | posted 01.19.12 | News

Who am I kidding, hopefully most ROM developers or anyone for that matter that needed to host something, moved away from MegaUpload long ago. But so you are aware, the Feds have shut the popular file sharing service down, charging it’s owners with engaging in a “racketeering conspiracy, conspiring to commit copyright infringement, conspiring to commit money laundering and two substantive counts of criminal copyright infringement.” According to the Department of Justice, the action itself is “among the largest criminal copyright cases ever brought by the United States.”

Megaupload reportedly made more than $175 million in illegal profits, causing more than $500 million in damages to copyright holders. Yikes.

You can read the DoJ’s statement on the matter here.

ProCapture’s Reduced Noise Feature Works Well With the Instant Shutter of the Galaxy Nexus

by: | posted 01.19.12 | Apps, News

The camera on the Galaxy Nexus is clearly not the best in the business. Sure, it can take instant photos that will wow your friends, but if they look like hell, what’s the point? Since many of us have been on the hunt for the best camera replacement, we wanted to suggest ProCapture that a reader recommended. ProCapture has this nifty “reduced noise” option that will snap two pictures and then mold them together to create a single shot. With normal cameras, this can be difficult due to shutter lag, but since the Nexus has zero shutter lag, it’s able to snap the two shots within a second or two. The results so far from our tests have been satisfactory.
