NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet Leaked, Looks Awesome

Thanks to a new leak from @evleaks, we are getting an up close look at the reported SHIELD Tablet from NVIDIA. The SHIELD Tablet was first rumored under the codename Mocha, a device that was intended specifically for gamers, harnessing the power of NVIDIA’s Tegra K1 processor.

From what we see in the image, it appears that the tablet features front-facing speakers, a decently-sized display, and a front-facing camera tucked into the speaker grille. Unfortunately, @evleaks wasn’t able to provide any finalized specifications for the tablet, but seeing as how NVIDIA has been hyping the Tegra K1 this year, it is probably safe to assume that their high-powered silicon will be at the heart of this device.

Previous rumors stated that the SHIELD Tablet would feature a 7.9″ display (2048 x 1536), 2GB of RAM, 7MP rear-facing camera, 4.8MP front-facing camera, 16GB of on-board storage, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi connectivity, and will run Android 4.4.2.

If priced accordingly, could you see yourself gaming with the SHIELD Tablet?

For the front facing speakers alone, looks like a good possible upgrade from the Nexus 7. Worried about the skin though.

    • renz

most likely it will use stock android like the original Shield/Tegra Note 7.

  • chris_johns

Thats…a pretty ill tablet…do we have the specs on this size wise…if this is the size of my og n7 i might cop this instead of the new nexus tablet(if we ever get one)

  • Darksthour

I love the front facing speakers! However how cool would it be to have some buttons on the back to control input. Might be akward at first but so is trying to play with on screen touch buttons.

  • WANT.

    • Actually, I’ll wait for the Tegra K2 devices next year as my kindle fire hdx 8.9 is currently a gaming beast and I’ll probably get an Ipad Air 2 in the fall for some 2.0 ghz A8 action.

  • quadtronix

I really like the look of the thing… Goes well with my one max! Plus the tegra k1? Sweeeeet! This may just be replacing my n7… Not to mention my shield! I wonder how thin it is or what material its made out of. Or how large screen is… I guess we’ll find out.

  • Mobile gaming is still such a niche market, I really don’t know why companies even bother with these right now.

    HTC One

  • danndan

I honestly cant buy a tablet that has less power/ram than a phone. Looks hot though.

  • ApplesNAndroids

    Looks like an HTC One

    • renz

most likely stock android with some addition of nvidia bits here and there like the original Shield and Tegra Note 7. if that’s the case then it will have Google Play access for sure

  • shmigga

Kinda looks like some crap htc designed.

  • Bryan Mills

    2gb ram? Nope.

    • hkklife

16GB storage for a GAMING -oriented device? Nope!

      • Those specs are just rumored, so we don’t actually know what storage or RAM will be. 🙂

    • What apps do you use that require more ram? just curious.

      • Bryan Mills

It’s a gaming tablet. Go enjoy your 1gb iPhone.

        • ? So…none?

        • Bryan, maybe you need to educate yourself as a consumer so you don’t fall for tricks that certain brands play.

      • Lynnneez

The importance of ram on tablets is no different than on pc’s. It blows my mind that Apple has somehow managed to brainwash people into thinking less ram is good. Like on a pc, the more crap you have running g the more ram you need to keep the system running smoothly and avoid crashing and yes, some games use more of your available ram than others. Hell, just try opening 20 browser tabs on your tablet while playing a high demand game. Lower , spec tabs will have trouble. Windows systems will resort to using hard drive space as a sort of ram once you’ve used all available ram. I assume tablets have a similar way of dealing when you run out of ram but the system will eventually crash. More ram is always better. That’s pretty common sense.

        • I have over140 tabs open in chrome on my droid maxx and there is no problem doing anything else. This has nothing to do with Apple.

        • Wait what. You can’t run all of your games on a pentium with integrated graphics!!

Why are you using an example that has nothign to do with the topic.

I’m looking for an app name. .Not an off-topic two paragraph rant.

  • Menger40

Using the Shield name instead of the Tegra name makes me think this will have game streaming capabilities like the previous shield device. Will they sell a controller to go with it?

    • renz

heard that controller will be separate buy. so maybe customer can use their existing one or buying new.

  • BoFiS

I wouldn’t say it looks AWESOME as it’s just a tablet, and does not seem to have buttons or physical controls to set it apart from every other tablet. I appreciate having front-facing stereo speakers but I’ll be very disappointed if there is no gamepad case or anything else. Also, will this launch alongside a gamepad-shaped Shield replacement for last year’s model (which I was certainly more tempted by than this tablet)

    • For a tablet, I think it looks pretty darn good. Front facing speakers are a selling point all by themselves. We’ll have to wait and see what NVIDIA plans on doing.

      • Mr E

Agreed. I was very critical of the current Shield at first, but I really like the idea of it. Not to mention, front-facing speakers ftw!
Unfortunately, my PC isn’t supported by the game streaming on the current Shield, which is a big dealbreaker for me. Android or at least the Shield subset really needs Steam In-Home Streaming support! It sounds dumb to a lot of people, but I just want to be able to play PC games remotely on a semi-portable. I keep hoping for a Shield 2.0 or that someone will make a decent Vita-style tablet. I’ve been looking into getting a Win8 tablet, at least until Steam can get in-home streaming on Android.

        • Higher_Ground

Yeah I have a 3DS and while the shield games are a bit different I do really like the idea of having a more ergonomic controller. The 3DS folds up nicely but it’s not a device built with (adult) hands in mind.

      • Mech_Engr_09

I wonder if they are gonna come out with some type of stand and control bundle to allow for much easier gaming.

      • NotSure

If it’s for gaming, does it have a controller that comes with it?

      • shadus

That’s the things we need to know what NVidia is designing this for before making a decision. Sure it looks like easier to use for tablet functions then the previous shield but if it drops the physical control wouldn’t that be a step back for using it as a portable gaming device. However making an overpowered tablet could appeal to certain demo graphics too. Come on Nvidia just announce the thing there is no need for the secerecy.

    • itsgonnalast

I was thinking the same thing. Doesn’t this defeat the entire purpose of the Shield (the purpose being console-style physical buttons)?

After playing mobile games for the past 5 years, I’d say there are less than 10 action/twitch games I enjoy playing on a touchscreen.

  • landon

What’s up with that camera? :S

    • h_f_m

      Probably for voice chat?

  • Suicide_Note

Looks pretty darn good. Hopefully the screen is up to snuff and they have a 32/64 GB variant available, or a micro SD slot to increase storage.

  • Gideon Waxfarb

I’ve been holding off buying the 1st-gen Shield, hoping they’ll release a new one soon with a slimmer form factor. If this is going to be the 2nd-gen, guess I’ll go ahead and pick up the old one. Since I’m looking at it as an emulation device, I don’t reckon there’s anything I’d throw at the Tegra 4 that it can’t handle. I just don’t like how bulky it is.

  • ckilps

    looks like a huge m8

    • It does sort of resemble an M8 with the black bezels. Luckily, the M8 looks pretty awesome lol

      • Bryan Mills

Too distracting with ugly bezels and unaligned speakers.

        • h_f_m

          What’s unaligned about the speakers?

          • KingofPing

He’s referring to his OCD issues with the M8…

          • Bryan Mills

Yeah I have OCD when it comes to ugly things.

          • Mech_Engr_09

I bet you’re pretty OCD about yourself guy who puts brad pitt as his avatar…

            Don’t be an idiot.

          • Mech_Engr_09

Who is brad pitt. dumb ashhole.

          • KingofPing

Yeah…and black is white, up is down, and short is long.

Thank you for the object-lesson in “outliers”: Those few special folks who’s personal subjective perception of reality is so far outside the norm that nearly everyone else sees it as the _opposite_ of reality.

Tell me if I’m wrong, but I get the impression you play that particular part a lot, don’t you?

      • DanSan

sort of? looks exactly like it lol.

guess somebody at Nvidia hired one of those ex-HTC executives lol
