Android 4.2.2 Update Rolling Out to Verizon Galaxy Nexus Now

galaxy nexus update

The day has come, the official Android 4.2.2 update for Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus is rolling out. We’re hearing from readers who are already able to force it to appear through the trusty ol’ Google Services Framework trick, while others have had it pop up without any work.

To force the update, if you don’t feel like waiting, try this:

Head into Settings>Apps>All. Find “Google Services Framework” and “Clear data” and “Force stop” the app. Then hit “Back” twice and scroll down to “About phone.” Then tap “System updates” and the update may pop up.

If that trick doesn’t work or you have experienced issue with it in the past, feel free to manually update using our detailed instructions for all users. Or at this point, if you have yet to update, you might as well wait for it to arrive on your device OTA.

Cheers Matt!

WOOHOO just got the pulled the update!

  • Jason Kahn

I got the update, but had to do a clean install, the phone was running constantly hot when on 4G. I have noticed that the 4G signal bar seems to show less bars, unfortunately when in spotty coverage areas, the new radios seem to try to hold onto the LTE signal longer but you have no ability to throughput data, it takes forever for it to switch back to 3G and it constantly tries switching back to LTE so the data goes in and out

  • tgreenlv

Tried the disable Google Service Framework (GSF) method dozens of times. Had to deal with Google Play Store problem and correction in the process. But … finally the GSF method was successful! Installing right now!

  • can this trick of forcing the push work on a Motorola droid hd maxx?

  • ohcalcutta

I’m rooted and unlocked with stock 4.1.1. Got the OTA update and installed, then ClockworkMod threw a warning about installing an unknown package after reboot. I allowed the unknown package to to install, but CWM gave me an error when attempting to install. Anyone else experience this or have any advice? Much appreciated.

    • umataro42

Is it the status 7 error? I’ve been getting that, so I made use of the error log option and sent it to CWM. Hopefully they can help with this.

      • ohcalcutta

Yes, it’s the status 7. Got the error when I attempted to flash the stock file directly in CWM when it leaked a few weeks ago. Now getting the same thing with the OTA update.

        • umataro42

I was also trying to flash the stock file using CWM, so I’ll let you know if I hear back from them.

          • umataro42

Never heard back from CWM, and there was another DL article with a comment mentioning revising a file in the zip but that didn’t work either (went from Status 7 to Status 6). So I ended up flashing a ROM – Shiny, which DL featured a couple weeks ago: http://www.droid-life.com/2013/03/08/custom-rom-friday-shiny-rom-for-verizon-galaxy-nexus/

Its pretty much Stock with just a couple tweaks, mostly for the better (it replaces stock browser with Chrome but there’s a mod you can apply to get back the stock browser). I was able to flash this mod and the new radios (all provided here: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/36706-romaosp422332013-shiny-ota-like-stock-android-422-jdq39-no-bugs/).

After flashing and restarting, I got a boot loop (possibly from whatever was causing the Status 7), but a factory reset / data wipe resolved that, and it works fine and I’m now on 4.2.2. The only downside was I couldn’t restore my MMS from Titanium Backup because it was made on a different ROM. But my pictures and music survived the reset (they didn’t on previous resets when I was on ICS).

  • Just got mine. Virginia. Had to do the framework trick but only once.

  • So I don’t have a system update option on my phone, also I am not on Rom JO03O but I never installed another Rom. I’m on JO03R any ideas on this?

    • DoobleJay

Find a Toro Unroot kit or do it manually and return your phone to JO03O then you can update to 4.2.2

  • tried it and now my Google Services Framework has disappeared. logged out my google acct, and the re-added with no luck. google play still crashes.any thoughts?

    • You may have disabled it without meaning to. Just go to apps tab and click the options thing in the top right and reset app preferences.

      • you sir are a beauty and i am in your debt.thanks that worked!

  • ToddAwesome

Turned my phone on, boom, update was waiting for me. Much better than the last 3 updates, where I spent hours upon hours doing the Framework trick.

  • Joey S

Trick worked for me. Many Thanks!!!!

  • Dad of 4

I received the update over the air last night (here in Mesa, Arizona) and promptly updated this morning. Since then my battery has drained to 4% and wont charge even though it is plugged in the entire time. My battery stays at 4%. I pulled the battery and plugged it in (without turning the phone on) and the battery charged a little, I turned the phone on and within minutes I was down to 3%. Anyone else having problems like this?

    • ToddAwesome

I’ve had issues for a while now with charging my GNex when the battery was drained to critical levels. This dates back an update or two though, so it’s not a new issue for me. I have to pull the battery and only a wall charger will work, car charger doesn’t cut it when this happens.

      • Dad of 4

I looked at the battery settings and it showed that my corporate exchange account was using 60% of my battery. When I stopped autosync everything was fine. When I started it back my battery went to pot. So I removed the account and added it again and all seems to be back to normal. I have no idea why this would have happened but am happy that all is well.

  • so wait, this update will remove the ability to use TetherShortCut? Can anyone confirm?

  • sog805

got the update last night about 9pm PST…loving the new lock screen

  • rodney11ride

WOW. i am actually surprised on how many users that FOLLOW droid life AND arent unlocked/rooted/ROMed….

  • cloutist4

Took me what seemed like a billion tries but the google services framework trick finally worked. does anyone know if this will fix the google play error that the trick causes? i couldnt for the life of me figure out how to fix it…

    • Liderc

To fix this issue you remove your gmail account from the phone in settings, then add it back and it’ll fix this issue.

  • Gunther

A dollar short and a day late Verizon. I just sold my VZW Nexus yesterday. Already moved to the Nexus 4 with T-Mo. I was afraid that coverage wouldn’t be quite as good, but so far, it’s working out great. While there are a few minor issues with coverage in some areas, there are other areas where previously I had little coverage with Verizon where I now I have decent coverage on T-Mobile. Sure, LTE is a little faster, but you hardly notice it, besides my GNex spent far too much time switching between VZW’s 3G and 4G to keep a solid connection. The Nexus 4 is solid, fast and beautiful. So far things have worked for the best. Good riddance too, like many here I spent way too much time hating Verizon for treating our devices like abandoned dogs in the third world. I hope T-Mo and the other carriers catch up soon, and Verizon feels the impact in lost sales. I was a long time customer (10 yrs) but their treatment finally got me to switch, keep doing that and you’ll alienate more customers Verizon.

  • celtsfan

Be ready for poor audio quality with bluetooth headsets with 4.2.2. I can barely understand people after updating. Although turning off wifi seemed to help.

  • updated and now my bluetooth won’t turn on….

  • Tony Garcia

Just got the update OTA this morning. pretty awsome…….Colton CA

  • Remark900

For those who have been trying with no avail here is what I got to work after numerous attempts

    Settings>Apps>All>Google Services Framework>Disable>Force Stop>Clear Cache>Enable

Then immediately hit back twice, scroll down to About Phone and hit update…and Voila!

I was on Wifi if it makes a difference as well

    • Did this exact thing in Iowa last night around 9 p.m. CT. Yahtzee!

      • Matreyu Hermano

Got it. Took 3 tries. Downloading now. Thanks, I wouldn’t have tried the Disable part.

    • What if the “Clear Cache” button isn’t illuminated? I still tried this but skipped thast step and had no luck :/

    • johnny989

You’re a god!!! I’ve never had the framework trick work for any update until now by following your exact steps. 1 try is all it took. Thank you!!!!

    • cns2007

      +1,000. This absolutely works!!!
      First try.

      • iPhonesucks

        Worked for me too!!!!!!!

    • Todd Mayhew

I have tried this, Do you mean clear data instead of clear cache. The clear cache is not illuminated.

    • First try! And yes, it’s Clear Data not Cache

    • A.J.

I’m starting to think none of these tricks actually work. I’ve done it at least 10 times and nothing for me yet.

    • timeismoney

Kept hitting Force Stop, Disable, Clear Data all randomly multiple times until I grew bored, and it somehow worked

      • iPhonesucks

My Force Close button didn’t clear but after pressing that combination of buttons 7 to 9 times it then worked. CHEA!!!!!

    • It took three tries, but this worked for me.

    • 4th time was a charm!!! Thanks from NorCal!!!

    • michael arazan

I did that over 24 hours ago, took 3 times,

Must Make Sure Wifi is Enabled Before Doing it

    • Roberto Taylor

This worked for me after about 3 tries. Good to have 4.2.2 on my backup phone since I’m now rocking a Note 2.

    • mg

Works! It’s the disable/enable steps that make the difference.

    • Brian

      Thanks. You are the man!

    • steveliv

thanks, this worked on the first try for me!

  • I’m seeing reports on G+ that this 4.2.2 release doesn’t include the native tethering functionality.

    • sog805

I tried turning it on and said I need to call verizon 800 number

    • JetRanger

Just use a widget to turn it on, just like in ICS and 4.1.1. I use Switch Pro widget. It’ll bypass the VZW warning crap.

      • slider112

  • Took about 10 framework clearings but finally got it!

  • Got the update, now does anyone have the latest apk for dashclock?

  • TheScientists

Is there any difference between the official OTA and the leaked 4.2.2 update from a couple weeks ago (which is what I installed)?

  • Jay Rack

Worked for me just now on the 7th try on wifi.

  • King of Nynex

I received the OTA prompt last night, but I’m a very busy person. Does anyone know if it’s gonna mess up tethering apps? I don’t have a lot of time to mess around with rooting during the academic year.

    • sog805

It stopped clockworkmod tether from working. Found the work around by copying the lastest adb files to the tether directory on the pc.

    • Henry Babcock

Pdanet+ w/ paid Foxfi Key still works for me!

  • thefullritz

Did the Frame work trick and the update was there the first time. Waiting for the download and reboot.

  • Guest

Got it on the 7th try on wifi

  • Buckoman

I’ll take five weeks to update over three months+.
Nice job, Verizon. I can’t believe I’m calling this “speedy.”
Maybe they got a proper update testing crew?

    • Tyler

It seems like the fog has lifted, I’ve noticed a lot of articles about phones updating in the last week or so.

  • Rich

It pulled perfectly with the Framework trick the first try but I restarted my phone before trying. There was about 30 tries before I restarted to no avail. It’s a nice update

  • dgdroid

Just got the update. Did the Google Services Framework thing on WiFi and got it on the third try.

  • Does this update include the major bluetooth bugs that AOSP currently has with 4.2.2?

    • IIRC those bluetooth bugs were with 4.2.1, not 4.2.2

I’ve been running 4.2.2 with JDX for months now with no issues with bluetooth A2DP, ODB2 linking, file transfers, whatever…

    • Jason Kahn

Bluetooth streaming fixed, but the audio bug that chops output volume in half if you use any kind of mixer is present, note the volume bug affects regular audio out as well as Bluetooth

  • Jon Lambert

What the Google Services Framework trick does is give your device a new Google Services ID, which may or may not be in a pool that has already received the update. Getting a new ID makes it count as another device as far as applications like Google Play Music are concerned, so you might need to clear out a bunch of devices after you’re done doing the trick.

  • avinyc

Very glad this is rolling out, but even happier to get the leaked copy a few weeks back. Let the key lime pie conspiracy comments commence.

  • Droidzilla

And the redheaded stepchild of the Nexus family gets thrown a bone from the update table.

  • bagheadinc

So, does this mean new radios? I’ve been on 4.2.2 for a while now, but still using 4.1.1 radios

    • Radios were posted last week or so. Search Droid Life and you’ll find them

      • bagheadinc

        Awesome, thanks. 🙂

        • florious80

I’ve updated the radios when DL posted those. I have to warn people that the radio is not as good. I had to flash back to the older radio because I was losing signal randomly, even though I was in the middle of NYC. The radio is definitely worse than before. I’m not sure why. I thought it would be better, but in my case was not true.

  • BigWormBigPerm

I kind of hope this is the last update for my GNex…It’s really taking a lot of energy out of my life hating Verizon

    • engemasa

      Couldn’t agree with you more!

    • Nagini

Now we just need one more update to bring back project butter and fix the glitches that this new update added.

  • Girlfriend got hers ota last night.

  • Stewie

I tried it, but wait! I’ve been on 4.2.2 for god knows how long already, what a letdown ….

    • You’ve only been on 4.2.2 for a month or so. It was released in Feb. 4-6 weeks isn’t that bad. Would have been nice to officialy have the earlier builds, but apparently they were too buggy for Verizon. Big Brother at it again. Protecting us from buggy software.

  • Bob

Is there a way to trick the phone to thinking it has a wifi connection?

    • BigWormBigPerm

I did the framework trick on 4G and it worked

  • ChewableFritter

I updated to 4.2.2, but the radio is running hot immediately and destroying my battery life. I’m curious what’s going on, since I’ve turned off location services to alleviate the stress on the radios a bit. I hope this is just a bug they’re going to patch, because my phone is virtually useless now with the way the radio has been running since updating around 1:45am.

    • Daniel Clifford

Try doing a clean install. Sometime just updating causes issues. I have been using those radios for a few weeks now with 0 issues.

      • slider112

How do you do a clean install from an ota update if your stock, locked and not rooted? Revert back to 4.1.1 somehow? Just curious, that’s all…

        • Daniel Clifford

Let me rephrase. Wipe the phone. Start from scratch. Will essentially do the same thing.

  • Still not working for me in Mid-Missouri. I’ve tried it about a dozen or so times.

  • EC8CH

Terrific, 4.2.2. Sensational, what’s in it Egg?

Wind… Fire…all that kind of thing.

    • redline135

See things no one else can see, do things no one else can do!

      • EC8CH

        Huge Buzz!

      • Feel pretty good. I’m not, uh, I’m not scared at all. I just feel kind of… feel kind of invincible.

        • EC8CH

is it gettin hot in here or is just me?

    • dragon-man

You know what Jack Burton says in a time like this? What the hell…..

  • MikeG77

I tried then same thing last night at 2:30 am and it worked for me as well.

  • Droon

When I saw this article, I went into about phone, checked for system updates, and it found nothing.

I did the Google Services Framework trick, checked for an update, and it worked!

In the past, I had tried the Google Services Framework trick and it didn’t work. Got it on the first try this time.

  • woohoo

  • Google Services Framework trick worked for me on the 2nd time!!! downloading now.

  • MikeG77

I was on WiFi, used the framework trick and I was able to get the update at 2:30 am on the 2nd try : ) hopefully everyone had the same luck.

  • mondeca

I did that Framework trick over and over, and I never got the update, but it caused a Play Store error that prevented me from downloading updates or new apps. I fixed it by logging out of my Google account, rebooting, and logging back in.

    • Yeah, this is one of the downsides to that trick.

      • mondeca

That had never happened to me before during previous updates, and the internet failed to warn me. I had to Google for the fix.

        • Cave

Help? I did finally get the update, but I’m still not sure how to fix this. Browsing Play on my PC only shows my old phone, and not my Galaxy Nexus.

    • Guest

This may be a dumb question…but how are you doing that? I’m looking at the accounts, and can sync, but don’t see an option to sign ou.

      edit: nevermind, found it

    • Ryan Powell

That happened to me last night but I was able to recover by force quitting the Play Store app and clearing its data.

      • mondeca

I tried that first, and it didn’t work for me.

    • SGator181

I tried the Framework trick and it didn’t work either, and now my Galaxy Nexus isn’t showing up when I go to the Play Website and try to install apps remotely. Additionally, I can’t find Google Keep when I go to the Play store on my phone, which leads me to think that it’s not recognizing my phone as “authentic” and giving it full access to Google Apps. I tried removing my Google account and signing back in and rebooting, but no luck so far. Any advice on how to fix this?

  • Tirionfive

I will probably flash back from CM10.1 nightlies to stock, then back to MMuzzy. I like my tethering thanks.
