Starting from the top: Exactly. This is why you cannot expect much from HTC One or any phone camera. That said, both CCD size increase and the pixel resolution others seem to have agreed for 2013 (i.e. 13MP - possibly same OEM), would be maybe the top that can be achieved with the current tiny lenses. As I said mark my words, if HTC ONE goes well (I don't expect it to go too well), then HTC... TWO (hehehe), will be an UltraPixel phone but with 8 or 13MP (on a larger CCD).
So you don't seem to disagree about 4K after all. We are 6 months apart. We'll see. The error you make is that you connect adoption with IF it makes sense. I never said it makes sense. "Makes sense" doesn't drive the market. "I want this and I can have it and others will envy me for having it" drives it. Let see today... 1080p is ok for 40" screen you say. OK. For 50"? Is it too much for 23"? No let see something else... the "Retina" thing that Apple started. Does it make sense? Let say it does (hmmm). It calls the latest iPad "Retina". My Galaxy Note 1, has 1280x800 screen which is higher DPI than their iPad (not iPhone though). You believe the eye will perceive difference in pixel size (they are really invisible in diagonal lines or circles on my phone already) and new FullHD (1080p) phones? I hardly believe it. Yet, I want one. Although it will eat more battery (here is somewhere that we are in need of major update - and one more thing where HTC ONE fails) and will need stronger GPU.
Anyway...

Lenses matter, but not for pinhole phone cameras. The resolving power the tiny phone pixels is so great it is not feasible to make a lens that can match it.

Reasonably priced 4K TVs may show up in 2 years, but we won't side wide adoption for at least 5 years, and possibly not ever. Why? Resolving power again. The human eye can't tell the difference between 2K (1080P) and 4K at normal viewing distances unless you're bringing out something that's 60" or larger. Average flat screen is in the 40's.

While your reply is a bit insulting (you must have HTC shares or something whereas my last HTC is HD2), I have to say I insist lenses is a major thing. With higher resolution you DO have more noise this is correct (DSLR have this too in less degree). HTC ONE photos will be looking better on the phone's screen and maybe a mean monitor. Not if you print them or zoom them (or zoom to print them, VERY common thing to cut cr*p around your kid's portrait for example). If they were true to the consumer, they would make a camera with larger CCD AND keep the current trend in MP (or at least 8MP). But no, they will sell you this next year (mark my words). Nice Apple marketing, but I have news for HTC: Works only for Apple (doesn't even work for MSFT).
Ah and mark my words #2, you will see the first 4K monitors and TVs in "semi ok" price within the next 18 months (thanks to the push coming exactly from tiny screen FullyHD phones -like HTC ONE- and super hi-res tablets). DPI is the "next big thing" (if it makes sense is another discussion) and HTC chose to jump from the train (at least in photo capture).
