HTC iPhone 5 errr…One in Black Makes First Appearance

HTC_One_black

Leaked last night thanks again to @evleaks, this is more than likely what the HTC One will look like in black. Now, we have poked a lot of fun at the new HTC One (formerly M7) in white over its resemblance to the back of the iPhone 5, but this black version takes the cake. Two-tone grey and black, top and bottom panels, and a camera housed in the top, how can you not see the similarities? And not that we’re complaining, it’s a slick looking device, but you can’t help but laugh a little, especially knowing that HTC signed a licensing deal with Apple to a keep them out of the court room for the next 10 years.

Nothing else is necessarily revealed by this photo other than the color scheme. We do get another look at this new version of HTC Sense 5.0 and a date which reads “Tue, Feb 19 | New York,” which is the same day that HTC has a press event planned to unveil the device.

iphone 5 black

As far as a launch goes, the latest rumors peg this for a March 22 arrival here in the U.S. The European launch could happen a week or two before, but before March ends, we should have the device on AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile. We may also see it in 32GB and 64GB variants for $199 and $299 on-contract, respectively.

What do you guys think – black or silver version? Which would you take?

just a thought..what if this was a joke pic…it does look like an iphone 5 somewhat and they are using windows live tiles..maybe this is just to throw us off?

  • Adam Brandt

I’m sorry, but HTC’s Sense still looks like something out of a bad GingerBread ROM…time for them to step in to 2011 and get with the program

  • rocs_macho

I think those are widgets. which we all know are optional. So I wouldn’t be too quick to say these are “live-tiles” like.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mcasteel87 Morgan Casteel

can we get someone from droid life who likes this to write the HTC one articles. quit hitching this phone is going to b awesome. this is a big design step for HTC.

  • where_is_carmen_san diego

An apple design built for android but looking like windows ui with live tiles haha htc = had to copy

  • Symbiotx

Droid life comments have become so negative, critical, and fanboyish.

  • Chuck Finley

Is this the phone that Apple let HTC release so they could get a feel for what it would look like when they release a 4+ inch iPhone?

  • http://twitter.com/four0twenty Callum

Also this is very clearly shopped. Just look at the black blotch at the top right of the bottom grey bar.

  • JMonkeYJ

i like the black look a lot more. and i’m loving the front speaker grills (from a functionality standpoint…they still look a little weird to me). i really hope front facing stereo speakers catch on.

    • flosserelli

I don’t understand why phone manufacturers haven’t implemented front facing speakers more often. I get tired of cupping my hands behind my phone to hear a video.

  • http://twitter.com/four0twenty Callum

Who cares what it looks like? As long as the hardware is top notch I couldn’t care less.

  • Fredy Nativi

That weather/news widget looks great though. The phone looks good also. And the speaker in the front seems like a great idea.

  • Alan Paone

Hard to complain, it looks good. Copying apple has been a pretty great strategy for Samsung, AMIRITE?

  • punkroyale

This topic does not interest me.

  • Nick Norman

Verizon is starting to really make me doubt them! … HTC One seems to be hands down better than the DNA. So why not get it. The DNA is a failure. … They stopped support on the Galaxy Nexus, which was suppose to be getting updates like any other Nexus device. Not happening thanks to Big Red …. The Moto Maxx series is totally dated already. Awesome quality phones, but hardware has fallen behind for such a relatively new phone. … Big Red’s OS upgrading per phone sucks and is so far behind. Maybe they should add more bloatware while they sit on the upgrade. … I just see a downward spiral trending here. … The only thing they have is a super fast network and the Samsung Galaxy Series. … The Samsung GS4 can’t come soon enough.

    • zepfloyd

How is the DNA a ‘failure’? Do you own one?

      • LionStone

Hehe, I stopped reading after that part :-)

    • sith77

i happen to LOVE my DNA i’ve compared to screen to my friends iPhone , S3 and NEXUS and the screen is HANDSDOWN better than all of them . its FAST smooth 4g is amazing on it . it really is a HUGE leap forward from the thunderbolt or the rezound . i have no complaints at all on this device. unfortunately due to verizon shotty update process theres a dman good chance we will never see sense 5 or 4.2.2 but hea i bought the phone for what it was knowing verizons faults. not HTC problem

  • http://twitter.com/iPhone5srelease iPhone5releasedate

The front of the HTC One looks like the iPhone 5S design too except that it’s a little bigger. They are rumors that the iPhone 5S will be a little bigger with wider screens when released in June. Apple will definitely go after HTC if that’s the case. Look for the iPhone 5S vs HTC One (M7) after the release.

  • http://twitter.com/starnovsky Stan Tarnovsky

First HTC device I liked in a few years. Looks better than Samsung and Moto. I don’t like pebble-shaped phones.

    • Philip A. Kaiser

Moto’s Razr HD and Razr M a little too “pebble” like for ya? lol

  • http://brgulker.wordpress.com/ brgulker

    Dear OEMs,

What is so difficult about software buttons?

    Sincerely,

Everyone who’s owned a phone with software buttons.

  • http://twitter.com/LucasNJohnson Lucas Johnson

Come on guys…. we’re comparing the front of the phone with the back of the iphone. It doesn’t look like the iphone. If anything it is closer in appearance to the new blackberry z10.

    • angermeans

….which has also been called an iPhone 5 rip off. (Z10)

      • http://twitter.com/LucasNJohnson Lucas Johnson

Everything has been called an iPhone ripoff. It’s actually quite hilarious.

  • Dave

is it just me, or has the hype machine gone too far on this phone.

  • trubin

Design wise, front speaker would have been better if they had went with on-screen navigational buttons

  • trubin

THe idea of front facing speakers is nice, but it just make the phone to cluttered on the front. I like the prototype model because it had a very clean look.

  • Alexander Garcia

Black. The black one looks hot. I’ve always Admired the physical design of the iPhone 5, but iOS just simply doesn’t do it for me. It’s such a boring BORING UI.

  • atari37

IPhone 5/Windows UI/Android backend? This is not going to help with the HTC comback. There’s nothing unique about this.

  • RaptorOO7

It looks like a BB Z10 and iP5 had a love child together. Certainly not an ugly device at all, nice lines, well balanced, YET, Sense is now the ugliest skin of all Android OEM’s. The icons look worse than Android 2.2 or 2.3. Maybe they should work with Apple’s team on a more skeumorphic look :|

  • steve30x

So whats that video we saw of the guy on youtube with the back case and front housing of a HTC phone? It had the Verizon “LTE” logo on the back with Beats, I think Droid life here posted that video thinking it was the M7, it almost looked like the DNA but the screen was a tad bit smaller. You guys remember that video?

    • http://www.facebook.com/anthony.price.1042 Anthony Price

Someone replied on another post here that the phone parts we saw were from the M4. Don’t remember the persons name but he has an HTC logo for his pic.

  • chris125

Well I guess HTC figured they can’t get their phones to sell so might as well try and copy apple to get some sales. Pass.

  • pooker

    this is really ugly

  • Philip A. Kaiser

I think I see an indented power button on the top. You can also see the headphone jack on top. (Which is always a topic of argument.) Strange that you cannot see any sign of a volume rocker or volume buttons.

    • gokusimpson

The power and volume buttons are probably flush as in the DNA. I hated the feel of those buttons as they were indistinguishable from the rest of the phone.

      • LionStone

But they really are distinguishable, slide your thumb up the side, feel the edge, volume down…or slide down to top edge, volume up. The top wake button has a distinguishable pattern that can be felt…plus its directly top, center…hard to miss. For me, its easier to use feel , not sight.

        • gokusimpson

I like to feel the buttons too, but it is much more difficult with the DNA than my droid x. I guess my fingers aren’t as sensitive as yours as I couldn’t feel the patterns well at all

          • LionStone

Are you calling my carpenter/rock climbing hands sensitive? Hah :-) Yes, even my rough paws can feel the side edges, but the pattern on top is kind of faint…mostly I just go by location for the power/wake button.

  • http://twitter.com/Defenestratus Defenestratus

Way to just… give up HTC.

    Pretty shameful.

  • Austin Warren

At least it’s bigger. …..that’s what she said

  • Laki S.

If I weren’t so averse to Sense, I’d be really interested in this phone… It does look pretty good…

  • EC8CH

HTC Logo…. get out of my buttons!

  • nicotinic

    Black.

  • http://www.facebook.com/collin.chapin.7 Collin Chapin

Did they really drop the recents button from the front just to put an HTC logo there? WTF

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Apparently. I’m just wondering if that’s an actual button. It’s gotta be, right?

      • Philip A. Kaiser

Was gonna say the exact same thing. Probably a button. Had they taken away the home button and the back button, I would say you are SOL, but I think they just made a fancy HTC button.

      • EC8CH

Button or just Branding it sucks. Imagine how sweet that phone would be with on screen buttons and no branding like a nexus phone. Those buttons and logo might be even worse than the VZW branded home button.

      • Greyhame

From the fact that it’s highlighted, while the other buttons aren’t, I’m not so sure. HORRIBLE decision either way.

    • Philip A. Kaiser

Just realized that their Windows phone uses a WIndow logo for the center button. This is just a variation of that.

  • ChristianJohnson

Man..the back of the device REALLY looks like an iPhone 5…
    *sarcasm*

  • ravn81

Im glad I didnt wait for this I picked up the GN2 two weeks ago and I couldnt be happier now.

  • Earl Dibbles Jr

I’m excited to see what they unveil on Tuesday. I do like the iPhone styling I won’t lie, I just don’t like iOS. If it was possible to port Android to iPhone 5, then I would. Can’t wait to see what HTC shows us though.
I’m ready to replace my Rezound. Was considering the DNA until I caught wind of the M7 and decide to hold out and see what plays out. It will be a shame though if the One/M7 is not compatible with Verizon though! :/ Here’s to waiting until Tuesday!

  • jcampbell474

Anyone know if the newer HTC’s LED light blinks more than 5 mins for a notification? My old Thunderbolt didn’t and HTC’s cust svc said it is by design. They intentionally limited the notification light to no more than 5-mins. Fail.

    • LionStone

What are you doing being away from your phone for more than 5 minutes!? Jk :-) Yes, it’s still set at 5 minutes.

  • hexodat64

Won’t knock it until I play with it in person.Just don’t skimp on the battery HTC

  • Sirx

As long as they leave those speakers in the front, they’re ok by me! Here’s hoping more manufacturer’s pick up on it too!

  • MatthewSimmons

I really like the look of the iPhone but I HATE iOS with a passion. So it’s kinda nice to have that iPhone build quality but with Android. I’m getting pretty excited about this phone I just hope the camera is awesome.

    • http://twitter.com/starnovsky Stan Tarnovsky

This. And decent battery life. And I hope new Sense is not awful.

    • mx

iPhone build quality? A little early to tell isn’t it?

      • MatthewSimmons

I suppose until we see it yes but it’s going to be made from metal and glass and unlike every Android handset that’s made from plastic and rubber coated plastic. With the exception of the Razr line. I guess it’s not iPhone build quality I’m hoping for it’s iPhone materials that I’m hoping for because even the iPhone 5 has had a few quality issues.

    • Steve_89

well, this is FRONT design, while iphone 5′s BACK is a engineering solution for ANTENNAS: aluminum = no signal. Those Apple’s plastic parts are for antennas, it’s NOT design, it’s a engineering solution! The would make a full aluminum back if it could transmit signals.

DROID X has a very similar design.
BB Z10 has a similar design.

      Ok, similar to what?
If we increase a display size to the maximum, keeping the smallest possible space for the front speaker(s) and CAMERA, we’ll have this design.

We can remove buttons and speakers and front cameras and have a BLACK display basically with 1mm metal bezel.

Apple iphone 2007-2012 = LG Prada 2006. So what? Apple iPrada?

      SUMMARY:

      HTC One’s FRONT =/= iphone 5 front.

      • MatthewSimmons

Whoa you got kinda crazy with that response.

      • Shaun Hardey

Well put. This should provide some insight to those who thinks every phone is a copy from Apple,

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

i”m feeling it. Actually i like it more than i thought i would. Let’s see what the software looks like.

  • anezarati

windows 8 software design and iphone hardware design…

hmmm, maybe htc should go back to the drawing board.

  • Verizon

    Dear HTC,

Please take the designers you have working on Sense and set them on fire.

    Thank you

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

To be fair….You haven’t actually seen the UI

      • Verizon

That is true, but to be completely fair, I’d say the same thing to Samsung and their CheeseWiz design team.

        • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Using Cheesewiz on the S3 right now…hate it

          • nanineklemperer46mz

Same here, but using a Note 2. CyanogenMod 10 is going on this thing just as soon as the majority of the bugs are worked out. My wife was so put off by it on her S3 that she requested that I “fix the ugly”

        • I_shower_naked

I personally feel that setting them on fire would be taking it too far.

          • normmcgarry

We could hang them and set them on fire. I’m old-fashioned like that.

          • michael arazan

Maybe plea the hacker group anonymous to hack HTC and delete their sense software, so they’d have no choice but to use pure android, they are on twitter.

        • billy routh

Touchwiz is the best ui out there even better than the nexus which is why samsung is outselling everyone.

          • Matthew Merrick

More functional, nowhere near as astheticly pleasing.

          • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Samsung is outselling everyone because they are Kings of marketing for Android. Marketing sells, not products. Nexus phones don’t sell well because they arne’t on all carriers and Google FAILS at marketing for nexus phones.

          • http://twitter.com/jcardona1 jcardona

Yup. The Galaxy S line is becoming the new iPhone. So much for iSheep, we now have sSheep. I actually had one friend say “No it’s not an Android, it’s a Galaxy SIII” when I asked her about her new phone. o_O

          • Greyhame

            OH. MY. GOD!!

Just reading that about made my head explode. Wow, Samsung really has eclipsed its phone as a mere gadget, on gone on to full icon status. No sir, I don’t like it.

          • Jeffy

i have a feeling a lot of S3 users who feel that it is becoming the new iphone will be picking up an x phone in the near future

          • angermeans

What do you expect they’ve ripped everything they know out of the apple play book and conspire in every way to be apple. Did you miss the whole trial and all the documents that were shown? They literally state that features don’t look like the iPhone enough and to change them. The one place they didn’t straight up copy apple was build quality (more than likely because they can’t) as they are not even in the same ball game as apple in that regard. HTC is looking mighty good lately and hopefully they won’t make the same mistake they did with the one x and only putting it on AT&T as they clearly have always made a much better device than Samsung ever has or ever wished to make.

          • angermeans

I’m sorry but you, sir are 100% wrong. Nothing about touch wiz is good. It is an awful UI and is not even close to why they are the number one selling android manufacture. It is because HTC is in a slump (but make much better quality devices), Motorola is an absolute joke and make horrible devices (even with google at the helm we will see if that changes and to be fair we are still seeing part of Sanjay in the current lineup), LG is well, LG, and ASUS and others are much too small and use horrible components. It seems to me that android oems are just not very good right now so android was ripe for the taking. Don’t kid yourself though as it can be taken back as Samsung isn’t doing that great of a job. The reason they are selling is android is popular, but touchwiz is absolute garbage especially when running side by side with vanilla android.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1198252656 Jeff Kerstetter

I disagree about Motorola. My X2 is still pretty awesome. I’m gonna miss it when I finally ditch it sometime this spring…

        • Matthew Merrick

While I disagree about touchwiz, upvoted for Cheezwiz

        • zurginator

Too be fair, I don’t think TouchWiz has any designers — it has nifty features, but looks terrible — and each part of it looks terrible in a different way.

    • PhoenixPath

      No doubt….

HTC, Android, Running WP8 launcher, and they dropped the recents button.

      *pukes*

I’d take TouchWiz and a lame-ass, gigantic home button over that any day of the week…why do they have to ruin these otherwise great devices with such utter crap??

      • ERIC REED

I was the thinking the Live Tile look was pretty bad ass..

    • http://twitter.com/starnovsky Stan Tarnovsky

I hate Sense with passion, but this is looking good.

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

*Puts on flame retardant suit to protect from Kellex Flame bait title*

  • Troy Myers

Really disappointed in this phone, the DNA and one series are much nicer looking

    • hkklife

Yup. Once again, all we need is a mildly refreshed DNA Maxx—32Gb (ideally a 64Gb option too) and a 15-20% larger battery capacity and the latest Sense/JB builds…bingo!

      • Troy Myers

Totally agree. If they are going to release another phone so soon, why not a MAXX-like update

      • angermeans

I’ve actually been extremely happy with my DNA battery. That new processor paired with the Qualcomm LTE chip makes a giant difference. This has been the best battery I’ve ever had in a device. Big change for HTC. Then again I’ve never owned the MAXX and for good reason.

  • Nexus_FrEak

K, must have been what HTC is paying crapple for right? Design rights. Rectangles with rounded edges are tricky!!

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

      Sooooooo tricky.

  • http://twitter.com/fr8cture Eric

I don’t like it. The grey looks so cheap like a toy. Ruins the phone.

    • jstew182

I am sure that is just photoshopped. The press renders always look a little different from the device in real life.

      • http://twitter.com/fr8cture Eric

        Lets hope so.

  • Justin Winker

If I had to choose, it would be black. I don’t like how the silver device shows what appears to be a massive black bezel around the display.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Definitely like the look of this over the silver/white version.

      • MichaelFranz

Agreed, there is a certain sexiness of this device in black. But honestly it boils down to 3 things, specs, battery size, hackability. If the specs are right, which im sure they will be for a top tier device, that great, but then you have battery size which HTC is notorious for slacking on. this device needs a minimum 2700mah to sell me. but knowing HTC it will be 2020 like the DNA. And for hackability, HTC phones usually are good with being unlocked and very developer friendly. a nice AOSP style ROM with maybe some debloated sense features would be nice. We’ll wait and see come tuesday what they offer

        • ozo012

The non-Verizon versions of the phone will be mostly AOSP developer friendly. On Verizon, the RIL (Radio Interface Layer) which allows for LTE/ BT/ other radios hasn’t been cracked on the DNA yet from what I last saw. It was very difficult without Source Code to get it working on the Rezound.
