So Yeah, Apple Will Announce an iPad Mini on October 23

“We’ve got a little more to show you.” Get it? “Little.” So clever, Apple. And yes, that means that we will likely see a new iPad Mini (hope that isn’t the official name) when Tim Cook takes the stage at a special event on October 23. There is a chance that Apple also unveils a retina 13″ Macbook Pro (only thing I actually care about) and some other goods, but the star is the oft-rumored iPad Mini.

As an Android enthusiast, I have to wonder, do you care about this product? I know that many of you own iPads because whether you agree or not, it’s a great product and bigger Android tablets have been awful up until the last 6-8 months. I certainly don’t get the feeling that this product is on as many Apple fans’ radar as the normal iPad or iPhone, though. It sort of feels like Apple has realized that there is a smaller tablet market that Amazon and Google are dominating and wants to see if they can come in and dominate it as well. It just doesn’t seem to be carrying the same buzz or importance. I of course, could be wrong.

Thoughts? Want one? Don’t care at all? Nexus 7, for the win?

  • cooksta32676

I can almost guarantee it will be just like the ipad, but smaller. Maybe a little more beautiful and innovative…. mind blown. Better put the headphone jack on the front this time.

  • nexus 7 owner

I already own the best small tablet.

  • http://peoplewho.tumblr.com wireless G

Just picked up a Nexus 7 yesterday. I am stunned by the performance. My year old Galaxy Tab 10.1 seems like a dinosaur in comparison. I used to think Apple had the tablet edge, and they did, but I think Jellybean in particular has helped to close that.

  • Droid4LifeDawg

Don’t really care, my N7 is fine all it really need is an Amazon Video app and I’ll be a seriously happy camper, my next Tablet will be the Surface Pro.

  • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

    So Yea, Who Cares?

  • http://www.deathbycone.com Jared Kotoff

I couldn’t care less. Rather have one of the many superior alternatives to any of the apple products.

    • Spongehead

+1 for not saying “I could care less…”

      • http://www.deathbycone.com Jared Kotoff

I usually do say that but I realized a while a go how little that makes sense and I’m making a point to break that habit. so yay!

        • Spongehead

Keep working at it! I’m pretty much over my grammar Nazi phase, but that one and “would of, could of, should of” still get to me. Time and meds may help me get over those two, also. :-)

          • Tyler Chappell

granted though, when people say that aren’t they really saying “should’ve, would’ve, could’ve”? Instead of the have being separate, and thus the “‘ve” easily sounds like “of”

  • Diablo81588

I’m sure Apple will come out with some insignificant feature and claim to have invented the 7 inch tablet market.

  • Milton Aleman

Oh snap! Gotta get in line for the apps!!

  • lvlorpheus

I called Crapple about the iTampon mini the other night to ask them if the new iTampon mini would come with iSandpaper or if I would have to purchase the iSandpaper aftermarket. The girl said she did not know. I went on to explain that I just wanted to be a good iSheep and do what ever Steve Jobs thought would be best since I was unable to think for myself. I think if more people do this we can cost Crapple $1 of call service time of the billion they were wrongfully given from Samsung imo. It still makes me laugh that the dumb girl could not think for herself and say no instead of I don’t know.

    • nexuschimp

Sir you are a true hero I never thought to annoy apple call centers

    • DainLaguna

well what did you expect a customer service rep to say to your completely douchebaggy call? i love android, but man…if you think those actions make you any better than some ios or apple fanboy, you are wrong. you are just as bad.

  • http://twitter.com/TurboNegro7791 Tyler Hills

Nexus 7 by far. Although I will tune in to watch Apple’s marketing antics. No doubt it’ll be the next greatest thing since sliced bread

  • CIFchamp24

We’ll have to see what the hardware is like for the price point they put it up at. I have an Ipad 2. The Xoom just didn’t do it for me at the time.

    • Tyler Chappell

That XOOM now runs Jelly Bean and has a higher-res screen than the iPad 2. I am very sorry for your loss.

      • DainLaguna

the xoom is only really great NOW then. back in the honeycomb days, there was no way i’d take one over an ipad.

i would love to have one, now, but God they are heavy.

      • CIFchamp24

I don’t know why you would put me in a position where I have to defend an apple product but I’m defending myself now. If your eye notices the resolution difference then damn. The screen on the Xoom really isn’t anything to write home about. It’s dull, and I don’t know if you could argue that. It’s heavy and thick as hell. And I would have rather not waited a year and a half before I had a useable OS on there. Can we both agree honeycomb was a good idea, but just a mess? And I still have a shit-ton of apps to choose from. But hey, here’s to my galaxy nexus!

  • Yoderz

Just for once I’d like to be able to look at a tech site without having to see anything about Apple in the first ten posts.

  • http://twitter.com/darrylzuk Darryl Zuk

I’m holding out for the iPad Nano.

    • nexuschimp

I did one of those cartoony spit takes when I read this.

  • Jeremy Turnley

Let’s see, I use my iPad exclusvely to read PDFs of my gaming books, and to stream videos via AirVideo (Sorry Emit, you suck). So, no – not excited.

    • Chris

my iPad can read PDFs just fine.

  • snobrdr2324

Android fanboys are just as bad as Apple fanboys. As someone who has owned and appreciates both platforms (current iPhone 5 owner and past Galaxy Nexus owner), the hypocrisy is outrageous on both sides. Apple was the first successful 10″ tablet, so why weren’t all the android 10inch tablets to follow “just playing catch up”? It’s called competition, I wasn’t aware as soon as one company made something, no one else was allowed to make a competing product. Regardless of whether or not you like apple, a 7″ (or 7.85″ in this case) tablet is a good thing on multiple platforms, if one company dominates a space it leaves room for them to milk the product and not innovate. I hope this is a success just as much as I wanted the nexus 7 to be a success. There is no reason why they can’t coexist as they appeal to a different audience for the most part; and those that are in the middle like me benefit from getting to choose what brand I want my smaller tablet to come from instead of essentially being locked to the nexus 7.

    • Chris

I can not stand fanboys. Grow up. Learn that its ok to like both and its ok for someone else to like something you do not like.

      • teleclimber

And if you dislike something, know how explain *why* you dislike it. Like, have a good rational reason why it’s no good to you.

Oh, and also know how to admit and accept the flaws of the products you do love. Nothing is perfect.

    • mx

      This, a million times, this.

  • johnc7995

Who even cares. I hate when this site covers Apple news, it makes Android users seem like ignorant fanboys who only want to compete with Apple users. Personally I’m not trying compete with any Apple users, and this information is useless to me.

    • Timothy McGovern

android is competing with apple whether you want to believe it or not. Get your head out of your ass.

      • johnc7995

Doesn’t mean an Android news site needs to cover all nearly Apple product related news that ever happens. It’s irrelevant information, it doesn’t matter whether or not either companies are trying to compete with one another, I’m tired of hearing about what Apple is doing when I go to a website dedicated to Android news.

        • Tyler Chappell

Then don’t click on the post, and then spend even more time writing comments, Johnc7995….

    • MicroNix

I do have to say that if I want to read Apple articles I’d just go to Engapple… errr I mean Engadget. I come here for the Android tips and tricks. The new Android leaks. And what happen to the custom rom reviews???????????????????????????? All the cool stuff about Android gets interrupted by Apple articles….bleh

      • Diablo81588

Custom ROMs stopped being important when ICS came out and addressed many of the drawbacks with early versions of Android. I don’t flash ROMs anymore because there’s no point when my phone works perfectly fine without one and has all the features I need.

        • http://twitter.com/Genmattes Gene Matteson

What about the 26 apps that you’ll never use? and Jellybean!

Or being able to actually use the device the way you want, that is the main reason I root and the main reason I don’t have an iPhone ;p (Had one to try the other side lasted 2 weeks and scraped it off to a family member for a THUNDERBOLT)

And @Micro, Took up to re-reading Engadget in all honesty their bias has shrunk as of the last round of android devices (One X, S3, and G-Nex)

          • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

You haven’t read the Engadget comments! They’re full of iSheep and iTrolls looking for ways to boost their egos with their $800 piece of crap!

I literally rooted my Droid Razr JUST to say it’s rooted!

          • mx

As opposed to this site which is filled with intelligent unbiased discussion? Please.

          • Diablo81588

Any app that I don’t need (including system apps), I can just disable them. I don’t need an AOSP ROM, because anything I don’t want, I turn off. Don’t get me wrong, I still have root access, but rooting and flashing ROMs are completely different.

    • mx

I fully agree. At some point this site turned from DroidLife to AppleDeath. I only started coming here looking for good news about Android, yet it seems like every other day there is another one of these trollish articles, and inevitably the comment section ends up looking much like a cage filled with monkeys throwing sh*t at each other.

Honest question, are there any Android focussed sites out there that cater to people who like Android as opposed to people who hate Apple?

      • dangolds

Sadly no, because most of the sites that publish informative Android articles are frequented by people who justify their support of Android by ripping Apple in the comments section. In a related story, these people are hypocrites, acting every bit like the blind sheep that they accuse Apple fans of being. It takes away from the bigger picture, which is that we as consumers are fortunate enough to have 2 awesome mobile platforms in Android and iOS ( hopefully 3, if Windows Mobile is successful). While both platforms are different, only a biased fool would fail to see the positive influences that each has had on the other over the past few years. Instead, you see mind numbing, pointless arguments like the thread above debating the legitimacy of the term retina vs AMOLED. Take a look at both screens – they’re terrific, essentially giving users HD TVs that fit in the palm of their hands. But sure enough, even something this obvious and seemingly non-controversial degenerates into a stupid hatefest just because Apple is involved. People need to chill and enjoy both products. Less fanboyism, more reality please.

        • mx

That is depressing, and honestly lowers my enthusiasm for using Android products. Since Google’s support is practically non-existent (still waiting to hear back after 2 months about a replacement for my defective Nexus 7, and don’t even get me started on the problems I am having with Google Wallet), I was hoping that the “Android community” would be able to fill in the gaps left by Google. The XDA forums are usually OK, but it really turns me off coming to sites like this for news updates and just seeing so much unnecessary blind hatred.

  • Chris

I have an iPad 3 simply because the screen and the fact you get much more quality apps that are designed for the device and are not just blown up smartphone apps. I already have a decent sized media library from iTunes from the days before I got an Android phone. Hell I threw on a movie and some Tv shows to watch on the plane when I went to texas back in July and let me tell you, HD quality video looks great on the iPad. Only Android device that comes close would be that Sony tablet and maybe a samsung and that asus/acer what ever its called Transformer.

Android/nexus tablets simply SUCK ASS. i’ve tested them at Best Buy and even had a HTC Jetstream. they may be great for some but can be really hard to use as you have menus and buttons all over and unless you litter your home screens with widgets, you’ll have a lot of empty space. Android is great for phones though. I have an EVO LTE and love it (HTC fan since 2010) but it will be a long time before I get an android tablet.

am I 100% an android fan? Nope. am I 100% an Apple fan? nope. both have their positives and flaws. Attack me if you want, but thats how I see the tech giants.

    • UrDoGG

Just to clarify: So far, there is only one “Nexus” branded tablet, which is the Nexus 7. The Xoom by Moto is the other pure Google experience tablet. Say what you want about the Xoom, but the Nexus 7 does not “SUCK ASS”. The HTC Jetstream is not a Nexus device, and does in fact, suck ass because it still has Honeycomb on it. But whatever, to each his own.

      • Chris

I said android tablets/nexus 7, meaning both. I did NOT just point out “pure google”experience tablets. Next time please learn to read the posts more clearly. Thank you.

        • DainLaguna

no one is claiming you singled out the nexus 7, our problem is that your experience seems to be indicative fo someone who hasnt used a nexus, which doesnt suffer from most of the problems other android tablets suffer from, yet you STILL included it in your coment, so we have to assume that you are talking about that tablet too. its called english man.

    • Futbolrunner

You tested the nexus 7 at best buy? Didn’t realize they sold them.

      • Chris

Did I say nexus 7? No I did not.

        • Futbolrunner

“Android/nexus tablets simply SUCK ASS. i’ve tested them at Best Buy”
          “I said android tablets/nexus 7, meaning both”

Next time please learn to write your posts more clearly. Thank you.

Wasn’t asking a smart ass question at first, because your initial post lead me to believe they actually did. But if you wanna be a deuche in front of the whole community and to its members cool.

          • Chris

Anyone with a decent sized brain kid would understand that just because its an android tablet does not mean its a nexus/pure google tablet.

          • Futbolrunner

That has absolutely nothing to do with what I said/asked.

            cool story bro

          • Chris

Glad to see the truth hurts for some. Have a nice day :)

          • DainLaguna

then why are you lumping nexus tablets into your ‘they suck ass’ comment? truly you have a dizzying intellect

    • Diablo81588

Did you really just say the iPad fills in space more than Android tablets? There is literally a 1 inch gap between icons on the home screen.. Android tablets have many flaws, but empty space on the home screen is definately not one of them.

      • Chris

that is, unless you fill the device with widgets.

        • Diablo81588

What’s wrong with filling them with widgets? Thats the whole point of a homescreen. It gives you quick access to information without having to open up individual apps. You make it sound like a widget is just a space filler, but they have an actual purpose. With iOS however, you don’t get that option. You’re stuck with nothing but an app drawer for a homescreen, with no customization options whatsoever.

          • Chris

Nothing wrong. Did you even read my post saying I own an android phone and love it?

learn to read peoples posts kids. You can get a lot more out of it rather then picking what parts you want to read.

          • Diablo81588

I didn’t pick a specific part, I questioned you about widgets since you clearly don’t understand their purpose. You don’t “litter” the homescreen with widgets, you use them to make yourself more productive. You made it sound as if widgets were just garbage you throw on the homescreen as space fillers. I don’t really care what your personal preference is.

          • Chris

well if you didnt care then why respond? you seem to care if you assume what you assumed.

            kids these days…

          • Diablo81588

Do I really have to explain myself? I responded because your comment was incorrect, not because I cared about your opinion.

          • Tyler Chappell

Except you said that Android/Nexus tablets suck ass and you have played with them at Best Buy. Well…there is only one Nexus tablet and Best Buy does not sell it soo…there’s that and the fact that if you bought the HTC Jetstream, you made a very poor choice and didn’t do your research as the Jetstream and Flyer were both utter failures. AND lastly, the icons on the iPad are so far apart that they are a completely inefficient use of space, and thus you also have tons of “empty space” soooo, what’s your point?

          • Chris

First off kid, I like I said before anyone with a brain would know what I was talking about. Read my other comment. Second I never made the purchase it was a gift,

You’re the type of person who doesn’t need to use expensive gadgets

          • Chris

First off kid, I like I said before anyone with a brain would know what I was talking about. Read my other comment. Second I never made the purchase it was a gift,

    • Jason

What app is better? My step son said the same thing about wanting the ipad because they have better apps. Told him to name one and he just stared at me with a blank face. My wife can’t even get books or movies without itunes on her ipad. I know how to do it but it’s a pain in the ass compared to android. They are on their own, itunes is off my laptop for good.

      • Chris

pain the in ass by clicking a icon on the home screen and downloading them?

      • Pluto

You do know you can download books, movies, music, etc., on an iPad without iTunes on your PC/Mac. I have an iPad and a GS3. I never need to plug either one of them in to my desktop.

    • teleclimber

Actually I love the mostly empty space on my ICS tablet. It’s like a clean desk. It feels like it’s ready to be productive. I only put my most-used icons on the middle screen and it just looks beautiful.

I find that multi-tasking on an ipad is way too cumbersome. Using iOS is like using a web-browser that doesn’t have a back button. Drives me crazy every time I use my ipad (yes, I have one of each).

I find the bottom bar (3 buttons on left, notifications and settings on right) of Android on 10″ tablets to be brilliant. I can get to anywhere and do anything very quickly with that arrangement.

Having said that Android definitely has its flaws but I’ll take its quirks over an iOS device any day.

  • Joe Avery

I say we see the iPhone5 with color options… I mean why not… they sold a few million and now they can 1-2 punch all those people with an “oh wait… there is more, we just we’re ready to tell you yet cause we want all your money.”
Or I think that maybe, just maybe, they will do a iPhone mini. Basically a Nano that is a phone. You’d use Siri for most operations.
I’ve said it a few times but that is the next market to capture. the flip phoners still account for about 40% of the US market. Those people may or may not want some or any additional features but if you get them on your platform you are about 80% (numbers from my ass) likely to keep them on your platform if they ever go for more.
I Think we are on the cusp of a change. The 7″ and 5″ tab’s are good for many things but are just a little more then you want when you say, go exercising. The iPhone has held this spot well, but I think if we assume the customer will have both a phone and a tab, then the phone can get smaller…
No matter what it is if it’s a new form factor then it’s a mistake. Apple dev’s are going to not be so happy that they now have to support the 3.5″ 4″ 7″ 9.8″ and 9.8″ with retina. We’ll see Android like fragmentation as well as Apple style fragmentation… Bad for Apple.

    • Diablo81588

You forgot 3.5″ with no retina for the 3GS.

  • jzwerlz43

never buying another apple product again, dont give 2 fucks. apple can suck mine as well as my nexus 7’s penises. (hypathetically for my nexus 7 of course)

    • LewisSD

Wish I could give your comment more than 1 + haha

      • jzwerlz43

its the thought that counts lol :)

  • AP

Honestly, if they can launch an iPad with a $199 price tag I would most likely buy it. I love my SIII and would never get an iPhone even if you paid me, but in terms of a tablet I think the iPad is more to my liking.

    • Diablo81588

This I don’t understand. Other than tablet optimized apps, iOS is identical across all platforms. Why would you want an S3 instead of an iPhone if you are willing to go with the iPad? Why not the Note 10.1?

      • dangolds

Perhaps it’s because he’s like me and many other GS3 owners. We didn’t necessarily buy the GS3 strictly because of the almighty awesomeness of Android over iOS. There are other factors to consider, and for those who don’t live in a black and white world, it’s possible to experience and enjoy the best of both platforms from either a phone or tablet perspective.

      • mx

Perhaps for the tablet optimised apps?

  • Mc

To me it makes no sense because software wise it’llbe the same old iOs, might as well get it rid of the regular sized iPad. People will flock to the mini to savea couple hundred dollars , which will lower sales of the regular sized ipad

  • nightscout13

As much as a HATE everything Apple, You can count on Apple to build a solid aluminum casing. Down vote away, but I like the solid feeling of metals versus plastics.

    • Joshua Carnett

Metal cases have their own issues, like causing problems with wireless radios, NFC, RF, and GPS. They also dent and scratch easier than just about any other material used. Is it pretty? Sure. Functional? Nope.

      • Diablo81588

        Apple philosophy.

      • Chris

Expect that shinny black Apple logo on the back is the antenna. but you are 100% right on the blockage of the radios.

i’d rather have that then cheep plastic

      • nightscout13

I don’t care for the pretty factor, I’m just old school. I liked everything in the 90’s that was heavy and made of metal. Today Everything is plastic, and I just can’t get used to it.

        • Chris

and beige/black and plastic looking? Surprised you dont own a flip phone or hell one of those bricks

          • nightscout13

Are you digitally deaf? I said NO to plastic. BTW, there were plenty of gadgets back in the 90’s that were not phones, and were interesting to play with. Today the world evolves around cell phones, but back then metal gadgets were King.

  • Michael_NM

iFreaks will think the fruit factory invented the size. I hope judges don’t agree.

  • EvanTheGamer

Why even post anything Apple related at all? Makes no sense. lol

    • SolipsisticPsychologist

Wow, you actually posted something I agree with. It is a shame the readers here actually find it acceptable to see a pathetic cash grab article like this, appear on an Android only website, wtf is wrong withyou people? This article is posted by the person who used to censor the word “*phone”. I don’t think that I could have ever seen “Droid” life sink this horribly low, man is this pathetic. This isn’t a tech blog you moron, it’s and Android enthusiasts website, it’s sad you have such little integrity Kleenex. You’d probably sell your dissapointed mother, if you thought you could make a buck, or 50cents. There literally is nothing you will not pimp to us for money.

      • Diablo81588

Wow.. settle down now. I, for one, don’t give a damn about any Apple products. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like to know where the competition is headed. An occasional article about an Android competitor is perfectly acceptable in my opinion. No need to get all worked up.

      • nb

he’s asking our opinion as a COMMUNITY about the ipad mini. There’s nothing wrong with this post. And don’t you talk about his mother that way. Kellex is awesome. Thanks for keeping us in the KNOW and not turning us into the same people who make up the scum we know as apple fanboys.

      • Timothy McGovern

I wouldn’t have even known about the ipad mini if it weren’t for this article. I like to know who the competition is. Android isn’t the only OS in the world. Nigger.

      • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

You apparently don’t know the first rule of being competitive. Rule 1 : Its always best to know you COMPETITION just as much as you know you. Thats why when the iPhone 5 was released everyone wanted to see what Apple did which eventually backfired upon them when they released a lackluster product. Articles like this only increase the pressure upon Apple to make a phenomenal product which we all know this “iPad mini garbage will probably be a Nexus 7 with an apple logo slapped on the back with a $400 price point.

        • mx

You must be delusional if you think an article like this has any influence on Apple at all. Of course, the rest of your comments seem to back that fact up.

    • Chris

Where can I buy it in person? Why hasn’t it been such a huge it?

      • EvanTheGamer

Why hasn’t what been a huge hit?

        • Chris

          nexus tablet.

          • EvanTheGamer

Pretty sure you can find a Nexus 7 tablet everywhere now(both online and in person). And you either make no sense, or you’ve been living under a rock the past 3-4 months. The Nexus 7 has been a COLOSSAL hit among Android enthusiasts AND critics alike. Easily the best tablet available on the market, and not to mention the least expensive that gives you the most bang for your buck.

            Come on now.

          • http://www.engadget.com/ Jon Fingas

The Nexus 7 is a hit among Android enthusiasts and critics, and deservedly so. But do those crowds represent the broader public? Nope. Not by a long shot. That’s where Apple operates, and it’s why 17 million iPads sold in one quarter where Google might never get that many Nexus 7s sold in the device’s entire lifespan.

To truly get a deserved ‘win,’ if you want to call it that, you need to get both the critics and general public. Otherwise you’re just serving a niche. And while I think the Nexus 7 can appeal to a wider audience, it’s not nearly as accessible in retail as either other Android tablets or the iPad. Here in Canada, for example: retailers never, ever have stock of the Nexus 7 in any channel, and it’s not because of demand… it’s just not available.

  • NyReynolds

Hate apple. Don’t buy their products. Don’t care.

  • nightscout13

A stretched out iPhone 5? Whats the ratio anyway, 20:7?

  • Michael_NM

    Steve Jobs must be rolling.

  • UrDoGG

    • msnight04

Actually, it’ll have one fewer. The iPad is losing screen real estate after all.

      • http://AndroidTaskForce.com Timmy

Actually, that isn’t true. It will be same resolution has the iPad and iPad 2 and fit the same amount of content, just in a smaller screen. Or, if they really want to ‘wow’, it will be Retina. But regardless, there will not be any loss.

        • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

Retina isn’t even a technical term to describe a display. It is strictly a marketing stunt promoted by Apple. There is no technical specifications that make a display”retina” thus making it irrelevant in the tech world considering there are displays on mobile devices that far surpass this “retina” crap that Apple promotes!

          • http://AndroidTaskForce.com Timmy

Dude, chill. It is a name. Like Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7.

Would you perfer me to use 2048×1536 instead?

I like how I was downvoted in my previous comment, do people not understand resolution? :P

          • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

Probably the reason you got down-voted was because you were saying how as soon as Apple attaches the word “Retina” to a device it makes it immediately a million times better when in reality “Retina” is just a marketing stunt that has dragged on for too long!

Also technically you couldn’t even say retina pertains to the 2048×1536 resolution because Apple uses the same “Retina” statement on the MacBook Pros with Retina Display which have a 2880×1800 resolution.

          • http://AndroidTaskForce.com Timmy

Alright, since your so ignorant, I’ll say having a higher resolution makes it better. Also why do you think I put ‘wow’ in quotes?

I am talking about the Retina iPad display. I figured that was a given since this article is about the iPad, but I guess I should have stated it. My bad. /s

All you are doing is over putting words in my mouth. I simply replied that he was wrong, it was ether going to be the same resolution as found on the iPad or iPad 2, or Apple would make it their Retina display. Regardless, no screen real esate would be lost. End of story.

I don’t need your input. I didn’t say Retina was better then anything else, or its top dog…whoops sorry I mean 2048×1536. Project Butter is a marketing term too, but I’m sure you wouldn’t have bashed me if this was an Android article. You can’t think outside the box, be unbiased, and get out of your paradigm.

          • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

            Me ignorant…..
The term retina pertains to ALL iPad, MacBook Pro, AND iPhone displays. Apple uses this term consistently throughout their marketing and sales without even an asterisk to convey to customers there is a difference between them.
Project Butter isn’t so much of a marketing term but an actual project that Google made to improve performance and reliability of the OS.

          • http://AndroidTaskForce.com Timmy

“Project Butter isn’t so much of a marketing term but an actual project that Google made to improve performance and reliability of the OS.”

..I give up. you don’t get it. You could argue that, but Apple does indeed state each different “high resolution product” (since you don’t like Retina). The resolution, ppi, etc are clearly listed. Why use small print when it is a huge selling point?

          • Spongehead

I despise Apple. But, I get what you’re saying. Retina is a term that could easily be turned into a technical standard as a simple function of PPI and standard viewing distance. That’s all it is. It’s a standard as far as Apple is concerned. They’ve taken boring terms like “2048 x 1536″ and “high-resolution display” and come up with a sexy term that the non-technical public can salivate over. Good for them.

          • Diablo81588

You can’t turn retina into a technical standard because the definition of it is not consistent. Who is to say what a person’s standard viewing distance is? I can assure you I don’t hold my phone in the same way as everyone else, so how can Apple claim a standard distance? At first, the “retina” PPI was 300, but when Apple introduced the iPad version, it was changed to a lower PPI, apparently claiming that you hold a tablet further away. I don’t use a tablet at any less distance than I use my phone, so who is Apple to tell me how to hold my tablet to see the full effect?

          • Vyrlokar

Considering that it’s the company that told iPhone 4 users that they are holding it wrong…

          • angermeans

Project butter definately is a marketing term. I think your the one not getting it.

          • Grammar Police

you’re* (e.g. “since YOU ARE so ignorant”)

          • fixxmyhead

wow, i can’t believe there are grammar police on the internet. seriously like anyone cares

          • mx

Let me get this straight. A feature that catches Android up to where phone was 5 years ago is worthy of a name, but Apple introducing a new display that is still, almost 2 years later, better than all but a couple of other devices is just marketing bs? Champion, you really need to get some perspective.

          • http://www.hypable.com/ Joshua Nealey

No it’s not a name like Galaxy Nexus. Galaxy Nexus isn’t attempting to tell someone the specs of hardware. By using the word “retina” they’re trying to sway people into thinking it’s somehow better than other company’s screens. Their definition of retina is simply “an inability to view individual pixels within an optimal viewing distance.”

I can’t view the pixels on my Nexus 7 or Galaxy Nexus at their optimal viewing distance. I guess they have “retina” displays as well by definition.

          • angermeans

It might be slightly different than naming a product but android OEMs (especially Samsung) follow apple in the same BS marketing game and if your going to sit and act like they don’t then your clearly not watching. What do you think super AMOLED plus or super AMOLED HD etc is? It’s the same garbage marketing that means nothing just a different way (and inferior to the displays apple uses). You can’t sit here and call apple out when every android oem and parts manufacturers does the same thing. Look at super LCD 2 and the rumored super LCD 3. They are basically the same displays (minus some tweaks and the products being used but same tech) as apples retina you so seem to want to discount. What about other things outside of display tech. Ok what about android beam that is just a marketing name for NFC that has been around for quite awhile. I could go on for days. Point is dont act like apple isn’t the only game in town filling consumers heads with marketing terms as every android OEM in the past few years has waited for apple to react and then comes to market with something just like it with some lame marketing name. As much as I wish android was still for geeks like it was back with the nexus one and original droid the whole thing has changed. Android is just as trendy with just as many “sheep” as apple does.

          • http://www.hypable.com/ Joshua Nealey

            No. Just no.

Did you just compare AMOLED HD to Retina? AMOLED HD stands for Active-matrix organic light-emitting diode and HD stands for a high definition or 720p+ resolution.

And that’s all that needs to be said. You just compared a totally made up word to a word that actually describes its specs. You are way off on this one, I’m not blindly bashing Apple, I have Apple products, but “Retina” is a total marketing ploy with no merit.

          • angermeans

No what I compared was the super in front of it and the plus behind it. That is 100% marketing.

          • snowblind64

No it’s more like a brand for a component. For example Fords ecoBoost engine series, or Gortex in coats and jackets.

IIRC ‘retina’ refers to the PPI of the display not the particular resolution used, thus the multitiude of so called retina displays at multiple resolutions depending of the physical dimentions of the display.

          • smartguy05

I would elaborate further. Its the PPI in relation to the average distance the average user would hold the device from their face.

          • smartguy05

            I prefer resolution. But I’m a geek.

          • angermeans

Are there really? Dare tell because outside of the LG 5″ apple clearly has the better displays on their phones and on tablets there is not anyone even close

          • J.K.

I have both a galaxy nexus and an iPhone 4s, which came out within a month of each other. Wearing polarized sunglasses renders the iPhone useless, while the galaxy nexus is still crystal clear. The reality is that most modern phones have great displays, and each tech behind them has various benefits/shortcomings.

          • angermeans

I also have both phones and the nexus and all other super AMOLED displays are useless in sunlight. Personally I would take having to take off my polarized sunglasses (which I do have and use everyday) and still be able to use the iPhone then to not see the display at all In sunlight

          • michael arazan

Champion is right, it is a marketing term only. It was just to describe the screen for marketing purposes. Just google it.

          • a.youth.in.Asia

Check the Apple patent portfolio, Retina Display Technology, or RDT for short is patented how your eye looks at an Apple device. Really just brainwashing…

Basically, instead of counting sheep at night to fall asleep, Apple counts you.

        • michael arazan

Actually it will not have the same resolution says tech insiders and leaks. It will start at 200 or 250 with 16gb and go all the way up to 500 or 600, so maybe there might be better resolution on the more expensive ones.

Does this come with a holographic display?

  • joejoe5709

If the iPhone5 wasn’t enough, this is clear evidence that Apple is simply behind the times. Not that they’re necessarily bad, but definitely behind the times. No one can deny it anymore.

    • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

They are no longer being the innovators but instead they have become the followers. Instead of being the first to market with a great mini-tablet at an astonishingly low price they would rather bash the first true “innovators” who made a smaller tablet. But yet when they see what a ginormous success tablets such as the Kindle Fire and the Nexus 7 they have the balls to turn around and release a product that they were once bashing. Here is Steve Jobbs exact words curtesy of Seeking Alpha and CNET. “…we think the current crop of 7-inch tablets are going to be DOA, dead on arrival. Their manufacturers will learn the painful lesson that their tablets are too small and increase the size next year, thereby abandoning both customers and developers who jumped on the 7-inch bandwagon with an orphan product. Sounds like lots of fun ahead.”

      • Diablo81588

What an arrogant prick. Didn’t know he said that kind of garbage.

        • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

He always did this. He bad mouthed Android when it was first released to the public calling it “Grand Theft” and even said he would spend his
“last dying breath and every penny in Apple’s bank account to rid the world of it”. IMO he knew nothing about technology and what the consumers want (this should be considered an Apple Law, never give the customers what they want). His only real talent was money management (which came from his micromanaging ways) this is honestly the only reason Apple is still here today considering they were in bankruptcy just under 10 years ago! Steve Wozniak was the true genius who designed and built the original Apple devices and it would be really cool if say Google or even an Android OEM such as Samsung or HTC could get him to help them out because they could really use some of his true genius mindset to get things moving (not saying Google or their OEMs have anything wrong with them but there is ALWAYS room for improvement).

      • nexuschimp

Jobs was always a prick I hated him so much he lied through his teeth and was just a dick.

      • http://whitemarket.freeforums.org/ Avery Dejuan Herron

That’s why they will make it 7.5 inches.

      • Spongehead

That’s why they made their tablet slightly LARGER than 7″. I’m surprised they didn’t make the iPhone 5 screen 4.011 inches, just so they could say that it’s better than a 4″ screen.

      • itznfb

I said it before I’ll say it again…. you guys give Apple way too much credit. Just like their “retina” gimmick so is the term “innovation”. Apple has never innovated a single technology or product. Everything they have ever created is just a rip off another product.

        • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

In the early days of Apple they were innovators (I’m talking the days of Steve Wozniak). But I couldn’t agree more that almost all of their products released in the last 10 years have been rip-offs of other products!

  • dave

    Whos Apple?

  • Krista Sanderson

    Nexus 7 for the win….by a mile

  • Buckoman

So the Nexus 7 is successful, along with the Fire and Nook tablets (more or less), and Apple will no doubt call this “innovation”.

I care because I think it drives competition. So far the only 7″ tablet that is good is the Nexus 7. Hopefully there will be better android tablets in the near future. I’m also probably going to pick one up for my kid. Android devices are for adults.

Desperate ploy by Apple, of course people will buy this like no other, but it just goes to show that they are seriously scared since all they can do now is play catch-up. Apple doesn’t deserve having the term “Innovative” associated with them at all anymore

        • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

I’m pretty sure all of this has been designed and produced post Kindle Fire and possibly even post Nexus 7. But one thing is for sure, ALL of the recent designs were changed post Steve Jobbs because he stated on several occasions that 10inches was the perfect size for Tablets and 3.5 inches for phones.

          • MBS

Who really cares if Steve Jobs greenlit the 4″ iPhone 5 or the 7.8″ iPad. The sizes are clearly where the market is heading. So what if Apple too goes in that direction. Steve is no longer in charge. It’ll either sell a bazillion units or it wont. Either way Apple will make money, their customers will be happy and it wont affect Android users in the slightest.
