DROID 4 Ice Cream Sandwich Update Approved by Verizon, Here is the Full Change List

Verizon has approved the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the DROID 4 this morning. A soak test for the update was announced last week, but we have yet to hear if it actually rolled out to any participants. What we do know, is that when Big Red approves something like this, it usually starts to appear on devices within a week.

Aside from the benefits that come with Android 4.0, you will notice better quality pictures, improved gallery performance, global roaming capabilities, less force closes and restarts, and Verizon’s Remote Diagnostics tool.

Update:  The soak test for the device is arriving today. Assuming that goes well, it should be only a matter of days before the public gets it.

The build number is 6.16.217. The Android version is 4.0.4. The update is 364MB in size. A full change list is below.

    I still haven’t received my ICS update..WTF?!

  • cslee_razer

Is the D4 slower with ICS? My Razr became slower after ICS. My wife has D4. I told her not to accept the update yet. On her phone the camera app, comes up in less than 1 sec. My Razr was snappy too but after ICS, it took 3 secs for the camera app to startup. Other things appears slower too but the camera was the most pronounce.

    • snail owner

My Moto Droid 4 is so freaking slow I’m freaking pissed

  • Jettaguy2003

I’m soooo mad!! The Bionic STILL doesn’t have ICS! They’ve been slowly leaking out versions for over 2 months. We were supposed to get it first back in July and we’re still waiting! I’m tired of bait and switch schemes from Motorola that they hype the hell out of a phone, only to release a newer phone 2 weeks later! Then THAT one is superceded by ANOTHER phone 2 weeks later. They need to stop releasing so many phones and just concentrate on making a few really solid phones!

    • Verbal_Judo Aka Story_Ninja

I think that is what they recently came out and stated that they would start doing.

Also since the Droid Razr + MAXX and Droid 4 they havent released any phones. I feel good about owning the most powerful qwerty on Verizon. And that title has yet to be usurped for the past 4-5 months. Which is quite a bit of time in super accelerated android land.

  • brantlyhobbs

Not even a member of Motorola Feedback Network and got it here in the north east.

  • Alberto

No more adobe flash if you update

  • Marc

I got it this afternoon on my Droid 4. Working fine so far!

  • Walt

My D4 is routed, and I have a couple of re-loaded apps frozen.
What should I do before the update, and what should I do afterward? Do I need to unroot, hide root, and leave it rooted? Should I unfreeze the apps, leave them frozen, or it doesn’t mater as they will all be replaced?

  • AranelAlasse

I should have been paying more attention, but: will Flash work on the Droid4 ICS?

    • Yes it should…Flash worked on ICS but in JB its not supported officially but if you sideload it on a JB device it will work still….

  • Alias73

Screw Verizon Wireless for making Droid Bionic owners wait so long for the ICS update!!!

  • Alias73

F*ck Motorola!!! I used to love them, but WTF happened to the Droid Bionic ICS

    • Alias73

Oh yeah, and F*ck Verizon too!

  • RoadsterHD1

Not right, Bionic should and was suppose to be before D4

    • Alias73

Totally agree! Verizon and/or Motorola are screwing Bionic owners over bad! This may be the last Motorola phone I own. I used to love them!

  • RoninX

Just got ICS on my D4 — and it’s fast and beautiful!

    • Story_Ninja

Were your apps and data still in tack after the update? or did you have to re download everything?
Also have you tried to tether. Any issues there?

      • RoninX

Yes, all my apps and data were intact. I haven’t tried to tether yet, but PDANet is still there.

  • SlimMan

So where does that leave us Bionic Users, I wonder? 🙁

  • ta99y

Verizon really doesn’t show any love to the bionic. How is it that the bionic was scheduled for an “early 3rd quarter” release mean while the d4, which just had “3rd quarter” release date, gets updated 1st?

  • jazmine

Guys, I’m so excited. We do have screenshot now. Just hold power button and volume button down at the same time for about 2 seconds!!

  • KCS

I got it about 15 minutes ago, looks cool, but it won’t load the stock text app or go sms, also the phone dialer will not load. So, how do I remove it?

  • td41

I’m having a problem with the new system reading dull gray text on a blackbackground. Does anyone know of a way to change font color to fix this?

  • f0r71fy

the update is working nice so far.. I don’t see an option to screen shot jasmine.

  • jonmv2000

I declined the soak test (because i didn’t feel like unrooting) but i’m still getting the update. Is it rolling out to everyone already?

    • brantlyhobbs

Don’t worry about it I was rooted with a bunch of apps frozen with Titanium when the soak snuck up on my phone. No problems re-rooted with the razr method and when it rebooted all the apps that were frozen with TB got frozen again automaticly.

    • while rooted it is common and good practice not to accept any OTA update pushed by the carrier because it could potentially brick your phone

  • jazmine

Can we screenshot with this update Droid 4 users?

  • josh

My wifes Droid 4 updated about 15min ago. Still waiting on my Droid Bionic

  • Mine is installing as we speak. I’m pretty hyped. And this phone is not really meant for entertainment. I use it more for productivity. So to me, this is the best phone I could have. If i want fun and all that other bs, i use my Xoom 4G which works amazing now with ICS.

    • really because My xoom 4g is still laggy and sucks with ICS!! Is it better than honeycomb yes but I still find it a pain to use and the screen is just horrible…

      • you might want to do a reset because mine works so much better now. its so much faster and no more keyboard lag, etc etc.

  • f0r71fy

soak test is being pushed out right now.

  • ODawg

What’s a soak test? It just appeared on my Droid 4 this morning…Please update me…..

    • f0r71fy

they send the update out to select users of the motorola feedback network to test it and if the test goes well they release the update to the general public

  • Bionic

Hurry up and release the Bionic update. Jesus

  • B. Hirt

How do you sign up for this soak test?

  • All I hope is this update will eliminate the 4G icon turning white and losing data problem that’s plagued my phone while it’s been running Gingerbread.

  • Matreyu

I’m so sick of these Facebooks apps being pre-loaded. Believe it or not, but not everyone has (or wants) Facebook. I don’t have the Droid 4, but my wife does and we don’t bother wasting our time with Facebook. That’s why I got the Nexus, no bloat or FB. Whenever I help her with her phone I’m always appalled by the amount of crap that’s preinstalled. That’s my rant.

    • Root, purchase Titanium Backup Pro from the Play Store and freeze the bloatware.

      • JoshGroff

Actually, uninstall updates > disable, this is ICS, no need to root to de-bloat.

    • yea in ICS just disable it that is a feature now

  • bassman418

My wife got the email this morning stating that later on today she would be receiving the software test. ( I registered her for the soak test )

  • Where the hell is the bionic early quarter 3 my ass

    • RoadsterHD1

That’s what I’m talking about, “this is not right MOTO!!!”

  • Aaron

Does Verizon force these updates? I still want to hold off since there are some apps I use that still don’t work well on ICS.

    • If you’re rooted and have Titanium Backup Pro, you can freeze the updater files.

  • PyroHoltz

    Too little too late.

I dumped my D4 for a GNex arriving today.

Guess VZW say the hell with us Bionic users.

    • smwandrie93

      newer devices first as normal?

  • Okay, this phone is 98% the same as the RAZR, yet this one takes months longer to get to ICS. And these will probably never see JB.

  • Jeremy Martin

Happy for the Droid 4 users but the owners of the Bionic have to be angry. The Bionic must be something with the plague to Verizon.

    • Joesred

      The Real Plague of Verizon……

      This new SHARE EVERYTHING plan……
I have 5 smartphones 3 basic phones….and….to give up unlimited data…would actually cost me more….go figure.

  • I just got my email for the soak test. supposed to be pushed to my phone today.

  • In case you didn’t know. ICS rolled out this morning to galaxy tab 10.1

  • Story_Ninja

Question. Is the Ice cream sandwich update destructive? Like will it wipe my data out from my phone?

    • Nemesis099

It shouldn’t delete any data, as the upgrade didn’t on my Razr Maxx. Granted I guess it could if they made some changes but that would be terrible as my wife would loose her data on the D4 which means she will call tech support (aka me)

      • story_Ninja

Thanks! thats good news. I hope it doesnt. Its a pain getting everything back on the phone.

  • So looks like the Bionic will be the last of the Moto phones to get ICS…

    • Daniel Clifford

Apparently we suck. Kinda disappointing we have not had anything yet. Thought the soak test would have hit by now.

    • kixofmyg0t

Dude 232 is just a download away and its awesome. Stop waiting for Verizon and get it yourself.

  • Daniel

Best part of this, it’s the same build number as the most-recent ICS leak that people have been installing onto their Droid 4’s and using for custom roms, so no reason to wait for the OTA if I can just install the same version myself tonight 😀

  • Greg

So do we know yet when will it get pushed out? I can hardly contain my excitement, it’s gonna be like having a brand new phone!

  • KleenDroid

I am surprised that the Droid 4 is getting ICS before the Rezound.

    • Sobr0801

We have official ICS. Have had it for a while.

    • The rezound does have ics

      • KleenDroid

It has official ICS? Oops then…

        • JoshGroff

Just installed it on my friend’s Rezound, I think it officially started rolling out August 1st.

    • Edwin M

What should be shocking is that the Droid 4 is getting ICS 4.0.4 and the Rezound just got ICS 4.0.3. Thank you HTC for pushing me towards samsung for my next phone.

  • arthuruscg

I guess the ICS upgrade will make the battery removable.

    • Raven

That, more than the screen, is why I haven’t bought one yet.

Ugh remote diagnostics. If only I was allowed to take advantage of that. My mother has a D4 and of course I’m the tech support. She was complaining about the picture quality so hopefully this fixes that.

  • I work at an indirect store in MI and i can confirm that new devices are being shipped with the update. I activated 2 on Saturday with the update installed when they were turned on.

  • Raven

This + LTE in my area in 3 days may mean that I have to go out and buy this phone at full price. I am not sure how much longer I can wait for the mythical Droid 5.

    • Russell Sprague

don’t do it, the screen is truly awful. Really it kills this phone, even with ICS.

      • NeveloII

Russel I agree the screen even for a non techie person is awful

        • hkklife

I also can vouch for the horrible screen quality on the D4. It’s on par with the Droid X2, probably even worse. Definitely poorer quality pentile than the Bionic or Droid 3 were. Just fire up Angry Birds and watch all of the ghosting as the birds fly across the screen (especially red birds on blue sky backgrounds-gah!

Speaking of the Bionic, where on earth is the ICS update? The last 2 leaks (235 and 238) have been quite solid. This thing could’ve rolled out a month ago. I wonder if the woes at Moto have taken a toll on getting their ICS updates polished and finished for all non-RAZR devices?

          • Story_Ninja

The screen is not as awful as some say. I own a droid 4 and on the flip side. The screen is very bright even in direct sunlight you can still make out what is onscreen. Also the awfulness is relative to what phone you are moving from to this phone.
Coming from the OG Droid this phone is a step up in sharpness and brightness.

Standing in the store and comparing this device to other screens it is obvious that droid 4’s screen is not in the contest. However from a day to day perspective I can honestly say when I play games and watch videos I have no major issues with the screen.

            Just sayin.

          • RoninX

It’s exactly the same screen as the D3.

The blurring effect is pretty bad when you’re scrolling through text — especially white text on a black background. Other than that, it’s not a major issue.

If you can live with that, it’s a fantastic phone — by far the best phone in existence with a physical keyboard…

          • …until Photon Q is released.

        • f0r71fy

          I don’t have a single problem with the screen/

          • NeveloII

Your a stronger man than I am sir

    • RoninX

I love my D4, but I figure a D5 will be coming out around Christmas. So it depends on how long you’re willing to wait…

  • still nothing for Nexus owners I’m guessing?

  • NeveloII

Would of loved to get this phone but god that screen was worst than the bionics which is deal able

    • JoshGroff

My 7 year old Acer laptop has a worse screen. Also, I thought it had the same exact screen as the Bionic?

      • NeveloII

I believe it does but I think the d4 uses a lower resolution screen but I could be off but I know one thing in person the d4 screen is not good and that’s a shame cause the phone is good otherwise

        • Sobr0801

Same resolution screen as the bionic, the bionics is actually worse due to a lower PPI

        • kixofmyg0t

This is why Motorola products get a bad name. Both of you arent even sure what screen it has or anything….you just know its “bad”.

Its the same res as the Bionic 960×540 but is 4″ instead of 4.3″. So it has a slightly higher pixel density than the Bionic. My coworker has a D4, he came from a Samsung Epic 4G and doesnt see anything wrong with the screen.

I agree that the screen isnt the best…..but is it as horrible as everyone says? No, not really.

If youre gonna bash Motorola fine, but at least know what you’re talking about first.

          • jeff

Stop parroting what people and sites tell you without actual knowledge nor experience.

          • kixofmyg0t

            Edited for your mistake. I

          • jeff

Sorry, it was meant to be a reply to NeveloII. I actually up voted your comment.

          • kixofmyg0t

Oh ok. No problem man. 🙂

          • Sobr0801

Agreed. I came from the epic to the Droid 3, and it was fine. The only thing I noticed was skin tones where off.
The bionic on the other hand kinda hurts my eyes after using the resound for 6 months. I think the lower PPI screws up the screen. My wife on the other hand see’s the bionic screen as fine, and she moved up from a droid 3 as well.

      • T4rd

It’s actually the exact same size/resolution/type display as the Droid 3s. Which is pretty much the worst on the market in terms of IQ.

  • arthuruscg

  • JoshGroff

Hmm, might be time to pick one of these up used, I do like me a hardware keyboard and some Motorola radios.

    • noc007

For me the new location for the apostrophe has been the hardest to get use to. The stupid addition of the Caps Lock and moving the Shift key down was easy to adapt to.
