Samsung Close to Being Ready to Push Jelly Bean to Galaxy S3?

According to an insider over at SamMobile, Samsung is close to being ready to push Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to the Galaxy S3. As great as we would like this news to be, this is most likely referring to the unlocked international variant rather than Verizon’s, which will likely be one of the last to receive it thanks to Big Red’s extra slow thorough testing practices. With the rumors pointing to an update time of around August/September, let’s just hope to see Jelly Bean land on Verizon’s version by Christmas.

Think you can wait that long? Or have you rooted and tossed on a stock ROM yet?

Yup don’t worry here VERIZON Galaxy S3 will be still waiting for jellybean in April 2013 mark it down. Meanwhile home at the range TMOBILE will be the first carrier to push the jellybean update to it’s Galaxy S3 you can bank on that.

  • soloha

I was on the phone with a Verizon “Data Specialist” the other day and he mentioned Verizon is working on an “enormous” OTA update that they are planning to release in Sept. JB?

  • demetrius

I have a US unlocked s3, will it get that early update of jelly bean?

  • neptunecloud

by the time we even get jb we will have to get ready for the keylime pie verison

  • Sobr0801

    Good bye verizon

  • rmcooley

i know this may sound dumb but ive never had a smartphone before…. if i buy a gs3 next weekend with ICS on it then the jelly bean update comes from verizon in a few months… will i be able to download that to my phone without rooting or no?? please answer!!! thx

    • Alec Bush

Verizon would never require someone to root their phone. Updates being pushed by Verizon or any carrier will always be sent directly to your phone and would be as simple as pressing a button to install.

    • michael sinor

As Alec said they will push the update to your phone. It’s a very popular phone so hopefully you’ll even get the update after 4.1. You should only really root to get rid of bloatware, it does make a big difference, to get features provided by a custom rom, or because the phone is update abandoned. Think of how many sites bring up that the phones aren’t getting updates. Rooting can allow you to get an update the carrier may never give you. Hopefully the 4.1 PDK’s will make that a problem of the past.

  • TheOiulkj

    U Jelly Verizon?

  • http://smartic.us bryanl

All the major providers have a S3 in the US. Verizon isn’t the only US variant!

  • violent_flame

Still waiting for ICS update for Rezound much less the Galaxy S3

  • skiinblue

I’ve really been trying to avoid rooting my phone, but if Verizon takes much longer to release JB, then I’m a half-a-second away from learning how to root it.

  • JazzoRenee

Why is this article taking shots at Verizon???

    • http://twitter.com/shystie1 Shystie1

I take it you never had a muliti-platform phone on Verizon before?

Just watch and learn to wait.

      • JazzoRenee

Hmmm actually I have, but no one forces me to choose or stay with Verizon, so to whine like a baby in the crib hollering, is pointless to me. #ijs

    • Brian Trahan

Because they deserve far more than the snide remark here. They continuously hold up updates for months with no good reason.

  • Dan

Is anybody running JB on their S3? If so, how is it running? Where is the best place to get all the instructions to it. Thanks.

  • http://techonblogger.ward.pro/ TechRumblings

My $ is on Verizon after Xmas. I am sure they have deals with whatever makers have phones coming out that time to not approve GSIII JB so others have a better shot at sales. Capitalist Pigs!

  • ilion

Not in love with this Verizon pessimism.

  • Commando4231

Even if they did release for GSM and not VZW, shouldn’t it be easy enough to port the build over?

    • gsmlove

different radios and baseband. ports aren’t easy.

  • http://twitter.com/SoWhy Prof. Professorson

I’d be happy to install AOSP Jelly Bean but so far there is no ROM that actually works completely.

    • Immolate

Yeah I know what you mean. Eleven days from launch and those lazy effin’ devs still haven’t delivered a perfect Jelly Bean ROM!!! Quit whining about locked bootloaders and get to work devs! *shakes fist*

Seriously though, from what I’ve been following, they already have a worthwhile daily driver in CM10, although there is some confusion and some risks. I’m not tempted to jump quite yet, but I expect I will within the week.

  • http://twitter.com/ToysSamurai Toys Samurai

I won’t believe it until I see it.

  • leo

Hopefully it comes sooner (crossing fingers)

  • PC_Tool

It’s allright. XDA and rootz has the 411 on all your JB needs. ;)

(I really am *so* sorry for that….)

  • frankandsimple

Here is a brilliant idea for fan-site blogs like this one. Have a real-time twitter view on your webpage. Rumor based news is not real news.. and is just twitter worthy (at best).

    • Michael_NM

Here’s an idea for you. Start your own blog, and post whatever you’d like.

      • frankandsimple

Pardon me.. I didn’t realize there were customers and fans for 2 line articles with a giant picture and a question mark at the end of two lines with no real news or information. knock yourself out.

  • kevin

Ya…as soon as this thing is ready for the international Verizon thats when ill just root my phone and get jb. No sense on waiting for Verizon when I know damn well i’d be lucky to see this update by January next year

  • Knlegend1

I need to get over that button and just buy this phone.

    • mustbepbs

I hardly use/notice the home button. I’m so used to backing out of applications with the back button that I have to think about it to use it.

I was afraid it was going to be an issue for me too but it hasn’t at all. Such a great device.

      • http://twitter.com/SoWhy Prof. Professorson

At first it was annoying because my Desire had it left but after approx. a month, I hardly notice it anymore.

      • gkinsella2

Agreed, I’m the same way…I use it more to wake the phone than anything else.

    • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

Honestly, I don’t know why, but I dig the home button. Very nice to push to turn on the screen instead of fishing for the side power button.

  • Not a name

What is stopping manufactures like Samsung from posting the factory images before VZW pushes out the OTA? Couldn’t that be a way to speed up the updates?

    • SomeDooD123

      Probably legal issues, like contracts.

  • fartbubbler

if so, that would be awesome! I miss it on my Gnex so much. And Svoice blows.

    • James J. Brown II

      Yes… SVoice Blows

  • sith77

yea phone just launches and they already getting ready for new system update ………. rezound launches 8 months ago still on gingerbread EPIC FAIL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Gorbunok

indeed. I will be cancelling my service once my contract is up. I’m sick and tired of this b/s on the part of Verizon and HTC. Will be getting a GSM Nexus.

      • Immolate

The BS is always greener on the other network.

        • Gorbunok

The BS seems rampant on all networks… Trying to find the lesser evil… Is there one?

        • JazzoRenee

LOLOL i take it they have never seen Green BS.

  • ddevito

Verizon isn’t ready for this jelly

    • saint_stephen

Pretty much. Although I do have Verizon’s incredibly slow ‘quality testing’ to thank for pushing me to root my 4.0.4 stock/unlocked GNEX. Been running 4.1.1 (BuglessBeast ROM) for a week now and haven’t looked back. The 7/19 build is fantastic.

      • ddevito

Agreed – 7-19 build is awesome.

    • Fatty Bunter

That was my first LOL of the morning

  • SirSoloDolo

What wins on VZW? Official Jelly Bean update on Google Galaxy Nexus or Samsung Galaxy SIII?

    • John

Prob the DROID HD EVO 4G LTE Maxx

      • http://twitter.com/DatBizzy Brandon Hagey

        SEE WHAT HE DID THERE?!

    • https://plus.google.com/110773438514346746273/ tjhrulz

      Fight!

    • http://www.getintonursing.com/ Jon

Well the GS3 does have alpha versions of Jelly Bean via Cyanogen Mod 10. All things being equal software side, the GS3 is just better hardware.

  • Liderc

This is good news, at least companies are adopting jelly bean fairly quickly unlike ICS.

    • ddevito

Perhaps they knew it all along

*did I just blow your mind*

      • John

        Nope.
        ;)

    • UncleDave

That’s because JellyBean is an incremental update to ICS, whereas ICS was a huge change from Gingerbread/Honeycomb. Given the “in” Samsung seems to have with the US carriers recently, it would not surprise me to see the S3 update not long after it hits the international devices.

  • paul_cus

Yeah, Christmas is a good guess for the Verizon SIII seeing Jelly Bean.

    • John

      And that’s being generous

      • http://twitter.com/jdhas jdhas

It’s funny, my Verison SIII is running Jelly Bean right now.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Chris-Robson/1317522018 Chris Robson

          How good is it?

          • http://www.getintonursing.com/ Jon

The CM10 version is in alpha status really. JB is fast and awesome. There are some bugs with camera and bugs with the voice calls like volume dropping out. Also bugs using headphones. Its not quite daily driver

  • http://twitter.com/TonyG916 Tony

    vuck ferizon

  • mikeGsays

AT&T SGSIII owner here, I’m not waiting that long, but I’m also not going to put on CM10 either…. Cyanogen is great, but some of the innovation Samsung created when they came out with the SIII is lost when you flash CM9 / CM10 on the phone, and I’m not excited about that! I’ve got a pretty good ROM on it now with a lot of bloat removed, but when you remove everything that makes the SIII stand out from an HOX or GNex, I’ll pass, for now at least….

    • ShiroEd

I initially loved the idea of all the things that Samsung added to ICS but in practice the only thing I ended up using is the “OFF!” command for my alarm. I wouldn’t notice if everything else was removed (and I prefer the look of the stock dialer/contacts/message apps etc.)

      • mikeGsays

I’m not prepared to give up Smart Stay, even if there is an app on the Play Store like it (doesn’t work as well, using it on my TF300T)

        • ShiroEd

I love the idea of Smart Stay but it only works well under certain lighting conditions and angles. For something like this to become ubiquitous it needs to be rock solid and work all the time.

          • mikeGsays

I don’t know, only time Smart Stay hasn’t worked for me was when I wasn’t looking at the screen, as in it was on the desk and I needed it to stay on longer…. Angles are tough, as that camera doesn’t really have a wide view anyways, but damn does it work good otherwise!

          • Deli

Smart STay works very well. a major reason i Left my Note.

  • matt

Agree that on Verizon it will be December at the very earliest. I am mentally prepared for it to take much longer. Oh well at least I have it on my Nexus 7 :-)

    • Alec Bush

I can safely say that it will be available well before then on other channels – the custom ROM scene is bound to cook something up.

  • Jorge Hurtado

Running latest CM10 JB build. Minor hiccups but absolutely love it. 8 hours on battery with more than half battery remaining. Just… AWESOME.

    • mikeGsays

30 hours under moderate use on a modifed TW ROM on a daily driver definitely beats the CM10 with lots of things borked on it and only getting that kind of battery life

      • Deli

CM is great, but I left it during the CM8 days. Too buggy despite adding many nice features. I always had sudden reboot issues with multiple devices. =( I usualy stick with Omega ROMs.

        • http://jakesiegers.com/ Jake

There is no such thing as CM8

          • michael sinor

Maybe he’s joking. It’s the only number that doesn’t exist.

  • ddevito

I wonder…did Sammy ditch S Voice or are they sticking to it?

    • Jorge Hurtado

      I ditched it for them.

      • ShiroEd

        HAHAHA!
        Does Google Now work?

        • mikeGsays

I think it still is without voice, just visually working

          • ShiroEd

OK. How do you activate it? Do you still swipe up from the bottom of the screen?

          • mikeGsays

Oh, I haven’t even loaded it, if it doesn’t work like S Voice does through the microphone, I’m not wasting my time since S Voice isn’t good at all right now anyways

      • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

        Lol.
