Thursday Poll: Do You Use Your Front Facing Camera?

Exactly one year ago today, we asked in a poll if readers actually used the front-facing camera on their devices. The feedback was actually interesting, with a majority 34% of 10,000 voters stating their devices didn’t even have a front-facing shooter, but that they indeed wanted one. Coming in a semi-close second were folks who mentioned they only used their front lens for special occasions.

With the introduction of Face Unlock inĀ Ice Cream Sandwich and many readers having upgraded to devices since then and now, we’re back to re-visit this question and get some updated numbers. So tell us, do you use your front-facing shooter?

    A majority is 34%????

Would “5%” also be considered a “majority”?

(Droid-life just get worse and worse.)

  • JBartcaps

I use it all the time. Especially when I get drunk with some friends. Just add a face morph and start recording your video. Makes for some funny moments

  • DanWazz

I would use it more if people I knew used video chat. For now, I use it very rarely.

  • Evil-D

    only for face ulock

  • rich

    Video chat only. F.e. Tango

  • Mr_Bucket

Skype and Google Talk have their merits when you’re away from your significant other. I’m not so sure I’d want to try anything from the Google+ app, though – you don’t want to include the wrong people in the hangout or messenger convo…

  • Realistic87

actually used it to talk to someone on skype at my dad’s house where he didn’t have a web cam a week ago, but I think the total number of times I used it since having one I could count one hand…

  • dylan84

    Never use it.

  • Mchl496

the problem is that the camera is so crap and there is no front flash.

  • JulianZHuang

because video calling a male friend is really gay.
taking self portrait is also gay.
the only time i used the front cam was to check if it works or not….

  • Ahku Droid

I use it to video chat with my deaf brother.

  • Tom

The only time I use it is with Skype.

  • quiklives

Front facing cameras are easier to use (in terms of snapshots) with a physical camera button, which the GNex sadly lacks. It’s the one thing I really kind of miss from my DX.

  • jk

It acts like a mirror when i feel like a booger is in my nose trying to escape!! LOL

  • Eeyore

I’ll probably never use it anyways.

  • WilliamKu

i use it to fix my hair sometimes and to see if there’s something on my face. basically i use it as an emergency mirror.

FYI – stupid ads popup on “Droid Life” every-time I open it in mobile chrome beta, not even in a new tab, they just replace the entire page content… MAJOR annoyance.

    • tyguy829

If youre rooted, download adfree. Blocks ads on all webpages. Havent seen an ad since the early og droid days

      me too!!!!

  • http://www.nerdshowandtell.com nerdshowandtell.com

Use the front camera for Google Talk video chats and Google+ Hangouts all the time.. These two features need to be made more public to people.. Some ads touting these mobile android features would help..

  • fvqu

I use it only as mirror, its helpful.

  • Airwolf

Yep! Thanks to Tango, I video message friends and my business partner on a daily basis. The quality on video calls is also excellent.

  • http://twitter.com/Serotheo Simon Yu

I use it for Skype and the occasional picture with a friend that’s about it, well I can’t really count Face unlock but it’s there.

  • Mark

    Skype! Useless without front camera.

    • Butters619

I don’t think I’ve ever skyped from my phone. From the tablet I have, but not the phone.

      • chudilo

If you have 4G coverage… it’s better then calling over the phone.(at least since they fixed the bugs in Skype) I currently use it on occation but will use it constantly over the summer to talk to my wife and kids that will be away.

      • Chris Hollenbeck

        Tango works good also.

  • Liderc

I rarely ever use mine and if I do the pic never turns out very good because of the lack of flash and I somehow always end up being in a dark place when I use it.

  • Trevor

I use it to vainly take pictures of the gf and I, and also for the ocasional Google Talk video chat. If phones actually had dedicated camera buttons again, that would eliminiate most of my need for a front-facing camera for photos of the ladyfriend and I, but all manufacturers hate camera buttons apparently.

  • http://www.deathbycone.com Jared Kotoff

The only reason i never use it or why its not a necessity is cause its not a necessity and not enough people have them /endlessloop

  • Brandon Sikes

I use it to take pics of my baby when she’s in my arms or laying next to me.

  • http://www.tedpavlic.com/ Ted Pavlic

For Skype and Google Talk (and Google+ Hangouts). For long-distance conference calls, everyone wants video these days. It’s not like I even have a choice. People hate it when you cannot provide video for such things.

  • Butters619

I probably would use it more if it were better. Front cameras still kind of suck so I just flip the phone around.

  • pokemonteZ

The creeper in me is waiting for side facing cameras…. No more pretending to be on the phone to snap a shot of someone.

    • jesus

      You are definitely a creeper.

He does not look green to me

  • http://techonblogger.ward.pro/ TechRumblings

I use it all the time to take pics of my daughter and I. One of my favorite things about android phones has been that most makers did not use as low quality cameras as Crapple.

  • Apostrafee

I used the front facing camera once….to see if it worked… haven’t needed it since

  • King of Nynex

I use for Face Unlock and Skype.

  • AlexKCMO

I have a FFC, and while useful for posting pics of my new beard I grew out during the Winter (shaved now). My wife doesn’t have a FFC and my friend who does never answers any calls.

We pre-ordered the SGSIII. Maybe once she does get it, we’ll use it when I travel for work.

Other than that, not really. In all fairness, I think current adoption rates are too low. Once they start getting on low end phones, I think they’ll be more common.

    EDIT:
I tried Face Unlock, and while a really nifty feature, it’s not quite there yet. It needs to work all the time. I found myself using the pass code more than anything when I turned it on.

    • will bartlett

ive used ti to take pictures of my epic beard but its almost to large to fit on the screen when i extend my arm fully.

    • http://www.deathbycone.com Jared Kotoff

works 99% of the time for me. the problem i had with it is the delay. i want to unlock my phone in an instant. i didn’t like having to stare at i for a few seconds. also when it failed it would just go to pattern unlock and anyone whos been around you for 5 mins knows the answer to that or i could use a passcode but i dont feel thats much better

  • sushah23

Mostly use it for face unlock and once in a while for Google+ Hangout

  • nwd1911

Somewhere between all the time and special occasions? I use it, very nice to have, but most pics that don’t involve me I’d rather use the back shooter.

  • http://transcendingturmoil.tumblr.com/ gaajiwaaih

    Works great for Google Hangouts.

  • tom

It’s one of those many features that people considered deal breakers if the phone didn’t have them yet they don’t actually use it much or at all. Always happens when a new feature is announced and everyone gets convinced they “need” it.

  • Droidzilla

It’s kind of like the Heimlich Maneuvre; you don’t use it often, but when you need it you need it.

  • Austin00

Should be an option for just face unlock curious to see how many people actually use it

  • possomcrast1

Profile pictures and if someones on a vacation i use google video chat (NEVER SKYPE!).

  • kindrudekid

To check pieces stuck in my teeth after a heavy lunch/dinner…
    face unlock
    video chat

  • shehippie

My husband says thats HIS fav feature of MY phone ;)

  • http://twitter.com/Jason13L Jason Lassourreille

Just used it last night for a Skype call with an old friend that moved. I also use it so my daughter can talk with grandpa who is usually in another country.

  • Android1997

I use it sometimes, like a few times a week, wheres the option for that bro lol

    • tyguy829

That would be classified as all the time

  • NicholasMicallef

    special occasion = video calling?

    • kraa

      Video calling = cyber specks?

      • NicholasMicallef

nah mostly when calling my GF. Doubt a phone would be comfortable to do cyber “specks” but you seem to know a lot about the subject…

  • p_droid

Only if I’m taking mYsPaC3 PiiCzzzz liiiKe OmGGGG

  • stupidllama

girls in Texas visiting her fam, use google video chat, we used to use skype when she went out of town but google video chat is just easier.

  • bgeek1

special occasion = Just had BBQ and dont have a mirror.

  • Guest

How else does one take sexy photo’s of themself?

    • Jest

front facing, holding camera in frame in mirror, pouty lips

      • Droidzilla

        *duck face
