The Droid Life Q&A Session: Volume 1

Over the weekend, one of our readers suggested that we try out a Q&A session type of thing here at Droid Life, so that the community can ask things directly to the DL team that they may be dying to get an answer to. And you know what? We loved the idea. As a site that prides itself on being driven by readers, we thought, “Why not give you all another opportunity to contribute or interact?” So here we go, with the first ever Droid Life Q&A Session, with hopes of it turning into a regular feature.

How will this work? It’s pretty simple really. Every couple of weeks, at the beginning of the week, we’ll open up a post for you to ask whatever it is that you feel like asking of the Droid Life team. Ask what we ate for breakfast, what our favorite phone is, favorite city to visit, if we think you should upgrade now or later, who has the best and cheapest selection of unlocked phones, why my cats are so awesome, what ROM Tim is running, if antivirus apps are needed in Android, why Eric loves Buffalouie’s in Bloomington, if Ron truly hates Android, or any other thing that you would like us to provide an answer to. We want it to be casual and fun and open to just about any subject.

What about the answers? Once the post is live each week (like this one is now), hit up the comments with your questions, and then by Friday of that same week, we will hand select 10-20 of them and answer as best as we can. Ready? Ask away!

*Note – If you see a question asked by someone else that you really like, be sure to upvote it. Questions with multi-votes are always a good sign of something important.

This is gonna be a huge hit. Ok lets see….how did this site start? Did you guys start it as a couple friends or did you guys get hired by someone else? And if its the latter, did you guys have training in journalism or just a love of android? And also (if there is one) what’s the hirearchy?

    • jiggaman508

This site has came a long way. I remember when Kellen was reviewing cases and doing rooting/nandroid tutorials for the og droid. Ahhhh, those were the days lol. This site, for me at least, helped jumpstart my love for all things android. I remember eagerly awaiting his uploads for reviews on the latest roms, kernels, and tweaks. Cheers to a great site, and Good Luck in the future 😉

I’m curious: to what extent does Verizon really have control over phone hardware?
Is it simply that they can refuse to activate a customers phone on
their network? Is CDMA Verizon proprietary in that a hardware manufacturer needs to license the chipsets/tech from Verizon? We constantly hear how Verizon is able to hold up phones/updates, why is this?

(Sorry, I asked this in a different post, but perhaps it would have been better to place the question here first. Thanks!)

  • paul_cus

Do you think OEMs like Panasonic or Sharp will try to enter the American smartphone market anytime soon? Would be nice to see a couple other players in the game, Stateside.

  • gkinsella2

How much data does the typical DL employee/fan actually use/need? I mean, I would like to keep unlimited out of principle, but when it comes down to it, is it that big of a deal? Especially, given the fact that it’s pretty easy to find Wi-Fi in a lot of places now.

  • What is your favorite beer and or brewery?

  • poeddroiduser

What phone would you today buy regardless of carrier?

  • Qwerty

I’m on a family plan, all of us on the plan but one have unlimited. My dad is debating whether the new maxx hd is worth taking the risk and waiting for. So use the upgrades now, or are the gs3 and maxx hd worth the wait to get burned on losing unlimited.

  • niemeyer18

In all honesty, do you think the i*hone 5 is worth a look at? (Don’t worry, I’m a loyal Android fanboy…)

Might want to add Kixofmygot in there too.

  • Higher_Ground

    Two questions:

    1. Would you still recommend the galaxy nexus now that it’s six months old? I’ve got an upgrade and I want to use it before they stop grandfathering people into unlimited data plans.

    2. What would you recommend for someone with an upgrade who doesn’t want to spend more than $50 and doesn’t really care if his phone is the newest model?

Do you guys think ota’s should be pushed out by verizon or the mfg’s?

  • Chris

Group Messaging… When do you think we will see it on stock Android without having to download an app? In the meantime what are you using to get these features?

  • bmuenter

When is the RAZR HD coming out? Any release dates? I would like to get my wife that phone as I have the MAXX now… maybe upgrade her and trade her with my phone!!! LOL!

What does “build quality” even mean? Seems like a made-up category to help the fat kid at the track meet feel good about himself.

  • joemega2010

What is your current phone and how do you have it set up? (ROM, theme, icon bundle..etc)

  • EC8CH

    Here’s on for K:

Have you wore that green checkered shirt out in public since???

  • How do you all feel about the direction the original Droid line is going? Obviously we all love the original DROID, and it’s QWERTY was one of the reasons for it. However, I feel like you don’t give the D3 or D4 that much love. In your D3 review you said it would have been perfect with more RAM and LTE, then the D4 comes out and I feel like you were just as unimpressed.

    • balthuszar

they don’t give many phones much love except the nexus and the GSIII…i’d like to know why

    • The D4 is completely hideous. Design wise, a step down from the D3 in all areas, even keyboard. They were unable to make the screen better, too. So of course it’s disappointing. (Current Nexus owner, previous Droid and D3 owner)

This question is for the honorable blogger Tim o Tato:

Are you guys hiring at DL? I am an experienced writer, generally web based content in the areas of tech and gaming. Curious if there are any openings around these parts. I also have some VZW connections so maybe that could help too. 🙂

What do you do with your review handsets, after you’ve reviewed them?

  • Tron

After Verizon’s treatment of the galaxy nexus is it fair to say they don’t need to have another one ?

What do you do with all of your blog review handsets, after they’ve been reviewed?

  • Are current Unlimited Data users grandfathered in to Unlimited Data?

    • bmuenter

yes for now… I had a verizon employee tell me yesterday that next month that will be gone! I am on a 4G unlimited plan right now and let me tell you its well worth it cause my bill would be really high!!!… even considering I only use like 8 gigs a month the very most. still worth it….

  • What does Droid Life’s feel is the current or soon to be release best Android phone available from Verizon?

My eligible for a new phone with Verizon before they introduce the new tier package.

    • Perhaps this can be an ongoing question? Like every month or so, say what the best (for each carrier?) phone to get is in you opinions?

  • CaptainHowdy13

Beyond the OG Droid why do you all love moto so much?

    • I started with a Moto OG Droid, liked it but didn’t get why everyone loved moto so much. Since then I’ve had HTC and Samsung devices. Moto tends to have great physical build quality, and no one comes even close to matching them on radios. Not sure if it is just Verizon that they have mastered radios for, but no one else is close.

  • What is the newest Rom on the Droid x2 that you know of ??

  • jstew182

Is the mirrorlink feature on the SGIII going to come to the SGN? Does it require anything hardware wise the SGN doesn’t have or is it just software based?

  • nightscout13

Does Android have a long term Automatic Cache Management system built-in? I noticed after continuous heavy usage, the cache builds up, and has no where to go. Not all Android users have time to manually clear cache build up, and not all users change ROM’s every few weeks. I have a suggestion to Android OS Dev’s: build Android with cache management that automatically deletes cache files that are inactive for longer than 2 months. SIMPLE. And everyone’s phone will stop slowing down over time……..

Can you muster up any new info or details about Google’s Majel project?

  • Can I write for you guys?

  • What do you think the next big precedent in communications will be? I thought about this because I just read an article about “The Singularity” and that eventually technology saturate every aspect of our lives, even merging with us physically….that seems to be a little far fetched…..erm unecessary if I do say so myself.

  • Android

What screen technology do you like better LCD2 or amoled HD?

    • bmuenter

and whats the technology difference? i.e. : screen resolution, pixels, sharpness, even advantages and disadvantages

    • feztheforeigner

SAMOLED+ HD is the best, although it is not on current phones.

By currently being sold technology i would say: SAMOLED+>Super LCD2>SAMOLED>Super LCD>AMOLED>LCD

      • angermeans

That’s a great list but completely subjective. This can be argued for days. I consider myself a huge fan of screen tech and have waited years for this innovation but I see advantages to both. The deep true blacks and vibrant colors look great especially on a phone like the galaxy nexus where it is hard to see where the screen ends until lighting it up. With that said (plus I’ll admit I’m a little partial as it is my daily driver) the one x has one of the best displays I’ve seen. It is true to color and you almost forget your using a mobile device. I know it won’t be popular but apple still has the best displays in my opinion but te one x is right up there in fact I would rather have it then my 4s anyday just because of the size. It is def a great time to be a mobile enthusiast and in the market for a new phone as you really can’t go wrong with any hd esque display whether it the SLCD 2, samoled hd (I’d like to revisit this one the samoled he plus comes out ) or the apple branded and overly hyped retina display. It is in my opinion the single best thing you can do spec wise to a device and one shouldn’t even consider a phone without one of these displays. People will argue that it really doesn’t matter but my jaw hit the floor when first starting up my GNexus and new iPad and really hit the floor when trying out the one x.

        • Droidzilla

You don’t have to pimp the iPhone display; it’s made by LG and LG makes phones with the same tech and ppi in a larger form factor, so you can just say that you also really like the screen on the LG Spectrum.

          • angermeans

I think you and many other people need to do some homework. It isn’t just as easy as well, “Samsung, lg, and sony make apples displays so theirs are just as good”. Don’t be so niece. There is a lot more that goes into display tech than just the LCD display. Apple employes an absolute all star team of display tech professionals (I’m sure they have a name but dont know it off hand). They have more of a hand in making these displays then you or other think. Also these companies only manufacture these displays that doesn’t mean they necessarily create them. It is a team. Then there are many other factors that go into how a display is perceived. Like for an example A higher quality backlight or color gamers. Put an iPhone or especially a new iPad next to an lg display like on the spectrum there is no contest. They may be made by the same manufacturer but def don’t have the same parts. They get together and get parts and make a plan. You can’t just dig a whole and farm displays. I don’t see how people don’t understand this. It has become some fan boy excuse for lame display tech in the android world and now that these manufacturers are finally making displays that compete with the iPhones retina now all of a sudden it matters. It is actually really interesting look into it instead of just spewing out some bs you have seen on the net and get some common sense.

          • Droidzilla

What planet are you living on where Android is behind the pack for display tech? Android handsets are the ones pushing the envelope. And yes, Apple essentially tells LG which of their display types they want and at what size and resolution. Apple doesn’t come up with any of the tech for it; no more than Motorola came up with the Samsung tech for their SAMOLED HD display (or Apple for the New iPad display, etc.). There are a very few companies actually designing display tech (not specs, mind); the biggest being Samsung, Sharp, and LG (others of note, but Apple is certainly not among them).

Just because Apple didn’t invent/perfect/have freaking anything to do with the tech in their LG/Samsung/Sharp screens, Samsung NAND, Sony cameras, etc., doesn’t mean the parts in the 4S are bad. Apple actually pulls some good parts from the bin, and they give manufacturers some great-but-realistic specs to fill (albeit their screen is too small).

And for the record, I don’t care for the 4/4S screen, nor the LG Spectrum screen (have you actually seen it? It’s a larger iPhone 4 screen, FYI). I’m very sold on SAMOLED.

        • Android

To me it seems like the lcd 2 display is the brightest out there, but you sacarifice color quality, Lcd 2 seems washed out. Super amoled on the otherhand had really rich colors, however lacks the ability to get as bright. Thats how i see them

    • Android

The edit button isent working, i wanted to clearfly. What screen tech do you like better lcd 2( on htcone x) or super amoled hd (on galaxy nexus) ?

  • Would you buy FB stock? Why or why not?

  • Phoneteck

So, and do you need an anti virus on Android? Also since my name is Tim I will let you know that I am running CM 9.0.0-toro-unofficial

Which Android phone in your opinion was the most dissapointing?

    • Austin

Also whats the most successful one so far ?

      • Michael

How many phones do you all have for the blog, are they free for promotional value from the companies, and do you pay for the service to them, or switch back and forth to each phone?

  • David

I’m the one that submitted this idea 🙂 thanks! My question is, is there a way YET to have USB mass storage yet on the Galaxy Nexus? Will there ever be?

    • GaGator

Good ques. This GNex is my first ‘smartie’ and I can’t believe that it has neither USB HD access nor SD slot. This cripples the phone for local media display.

  • What’s your favorite kind of cheese?

  • MudRacer

When do you think Google Glass will be available as a product for consumers?

  • Would it be possible to get OEM Skins like Sense and Blur reviewed as applications, rather than footnotes in device reviews, to get a better idea of what you gain or lose by keeping them?

    • And maybe to build off of that, the options of 3rd party launchers or ROMs that we can sub for them!

  • fabboiiii

    Cool. Why? lollll

  • Do you guys believe that with the intro of shared data that major companies will start allowing *free* tethering? If it’s tiered, then what would be the hold up to just allow you to use your data how you see fit instead of charging extra for it?

    • dqw

If we are grandfathered on unlimited data do you think it would be smart to sign up for tje 30$ unlimited 4g tethering before the plans change instead of just tethering for free

      • that’s what i got the unlimited data plan and unlimited 4g tethering so i pay 60 dollars just for data on my phone

  • Knlegend1

So exactly what does droid-life mean to you guys? Not the website but actually android. Does android assist you in everyday life or does it isolate you from the rest of the world.

    • Knlegend1

Also is there a way to turn your black RAZR into a white RAZR? No spray paint jokes lol.

      • Droidzilla

Purchase the white surround and back from a parts dealer for phone repair. I don’t know if the white is out, yet, but it ought to be soon (my wife has the white one and damn does it look better than my black one!).
