Motorola Releases Initial Ice Cream Sandwich Update Timeline – DROID RAZR, RAZR MAXX, Bionic, and DROID 4 Still Being Evaluated

moto ics

Motorola updated their timeline for device updates this morning, finally revealing their plans to push Ice Cream Sandwich. So far, the list is not going to excite any of you. As far as U.S. devices go, none of them on Verizon have specific details and are currently “in evaluation.” You will see that the Atrix, Atrix 2 and Photon 4G will all receive Android 4.0 in Q3, but the RAZR, RAZR MAXX, Bionic, DROID 4 and almost any other device tied to Big Red has not been given an expected rollout date. In fact, those non-VZW phones are all in development while the ones you all care about are still in the “planning” phase.

Why is that? Tough to tell. We were all hoping that the RAZRs and the Bionic would see this major update first since they were released just before Ice Cream Sandwich went live. Q3 though for many of these? Seems so far away. Then again, Moto did provide an outlook into how they update phones which we calculated to be about 6 months. I guess that would put us right around the end of Q2 or early Q3. Someone figure out why the Atrix series and the Photon would be up first ahead of the DROID brand. Carrier, maybe?

Hoping to know more very soon.

Sad state of affairs. I work for a very large law enforcement department and as an IT approval member I plan to suggest we move away from moto if we don’t see an ICS update soon. Procurement of devices and annual contracts I’m sure should count as some kind of leverage.

I would think evaluation & planning means that they already developed it and are evaluating the device and planning a date for Q1 like originally planned. I hope, at least.

Bottom line, the consumer was led to believe that the operating system that would make their very expensive piece of advanced hardware do what everyone expected was coming early in the new year.  This information affected the purchasing decision for many people.  Failure to deliver on this and make delivery at all seem questionable is a huge failure.  Smart phone users are competitive and demanding.  If customers don’t get what they pay for, they forever see it as a black mark on the experience making them leery of future purchases.  Saying that customers should expect long waits after not seeing ICS delivered in a timely manner is simply a reflection of the cynicism of being burnt with everyone else who bought into this expectation or just plain cynicism.

Thanks Thanks thanks Motorola! Thanks for giving ICS support for the original Atrix4G!

I think I read between the lines here and figured it out.

Evaluation = “We here at Motorola are evaluating different fixes to disable current root methods”

Planning = “Verizon is trying to plan how many programs the consumer will need to enhance their mobile experience (and make them a ton of money).”

Im sick of waiting. I could do siri and not have to

Calm the f_CK down…..do some reading before jumping off the ledge. Evaluating and Planning includes carriers not wanting to disclosure a date at this time. Verizon apparently do not want to give a tome table ….probably due to hurting sales or getting a sh!t load of complaints April 2nd.

I’m sure Razr AND Bionic will have update same time frame as the international Razr

Well I hope Moto big wigs read these boards and learn something….The consumers who are shelling out hundreds of dollars for in contract phones, hoping to have some backing from the company for atleast half of the contract, then release numerous phones only a month after each other only show they care about $$$ and not for the consumer. But it is the consumer who keeps these companies going, but this consumer has had enough of Moto. So I just gave you my last $ for your products since there are more companies who do care about their customers. Moto..Kiss My A$$

I want to swear off Motorola completely after I made the mistake of buying the Droid 4 as my OG update, but knowing the Google purchase will most likely happen, they probably are going to have some type of advantage, no matter what Google is saying. (But not for the D4 obviously)

Return it! You got 10 days or something.

  • Sporttster

Moto will be the last one out with ICS. Screw em…gonna go with the dev ROM when it’s ready to go which I’m positive will be LONG before these bozo’s get anything out. I swear, never again buying anything MOTO. If there’s a way to tick their customers off, they’ll find it….

*shrugs* I guess since at the time of release the Atrix 4G was a big time phone being the first dual core with Tegra 2. It’s almost reaching its 1 year birthday so I guess before updating that timeline they have been working on its development for awhile. Something tells me I’m wrong, but just a guesstamation shot in the dark.

this is indeed the last time i buy a droid if moto keeps them locked like this…
