DROID Bionic 5.5.893 Bug Fixer Started Rolling Out Last Night, Check Your Phone Now

Last night around 9PM Pacific, the major update for the DROID Bionic that should tidy up most of its bugs, went live. If you were not prompted for it, you should check for yourself as it should be available to everyone. Head into Settings>About phone>System updates.

To view the full changelog for the update, check out this post.

Cheers Crusteez, Jason, brian, Nate, Charles, Mark and everyone else!

Ok so here’s my question, now with the update would one say now more than ever it’s a worthy upgrade. I have a new every two $50 discount plus the living social $50 deal and since it’s now $199 was thinking of getting this or holding out for the Nexus

  • hwest

why am i getting, check for update is not available at this time, try again later, when i try to pull the update?please can someone help?

    • Bionic

      your batch hasnt been released

  • http://profiles.google.com/tkimball00 Timothy Kimball

Got it this morning. Wondering if we will see ICS anytime soon.

    • Bionic

      june

  • Dshel61

I downloaded & installed the update but when it rebooted it said “Update Failed” What’s going on? Anybody else get this? Suggestions?

    • Dshel61

It starts the installation. Then I get an exclamation point in a triangle and the phone reboots. After the reboot it says Update Failed. Any suggestions?

      • Bionic

        frozen bloat?

        • Dshel61

          What does that mean?

      • Medic66

I have my Bionic rooted, and most of the bloatware was frozen. OTA software update was failing as you indicated above.

I “unfroze” all of the bloatware, retried the OTA download and it did install sucessfully.

        Sucessfully maintained my root too!

And WOW! Yes the camera is faster!

        • Iammebane

          how did you “unfreeze” bloatware….

  • http://www.facebook.com/travis.heinzelman Travis Heinzelman

Am i the only person to lose ROOT after this update??  i was very unsure of doing it for this reason and everyone said they did not lose root…   *sadface*

  • Slwest78

Will someone post their baseband and kernel version on this official update. Is it the same as what the 5.5.893 leak has.

  • http://www.agrstech.com Zephaniah

Even though I’ve not experienced very many bugs, I’m downloadin’. Too bad it probably won’t fix that annoying as hell line noise when listening to music with headphones.

    • Dexterslab0329

Actually, the update did fix that. I haven’t experienced ANY noise.

      • http://www.agrstech.com Zephaniah

If I turn off media audio effects, the line noise is now gone. Glad to see they fixed it. Also the camera speed is so much better.

Moto keeps updating their old devices :) I wonder why Samsung does not do that lol

Kept getting update service not available since DL reported the rollout. Just checked it again and it is finally downloading!!! Happy man here…

  • vtxtank

I am rooted with Liberty Rom.  Will this affect it, should I bypass it all together? Thanks!

    • Bionic

      it’ll fuckk you up

  • adam

My data is still dropping… and my battery life seems worse… is this possible.  Love the camera fix though.

    • Bionic

      do a battery pull

      • guest

        do a barrel roll!

  • Girlypeekaboo

Camera is def better, but i still lose 3g n have to do airplane mode to get it back happened… Twice today but i am traveling for the day so i will see how it is when I’m in one place

    • Bionic

yeah traveling will do that did that on my OG droid

  • Ranlil

I’ve had it with root for over a month.  Good until ICS!

  • Anonymous

I’m a little confused, I did an update via Cheesecake a while back and that put me on 5.6.893.  Is 5.5.893 an update to that?

  • Aaron Kubisak

    Holy crap..the camera

    • Bionic

i know my dickk looks huge thanks

  • Anonymous

If I did the leaked update a few weeks ago am I going to get the one from MOTO?  Is it the exact same?  Sorry if this has been asked a million times already.

  • Dshel61

I downloaded & installed the update but it still shows version 5.5.886.XT875. What went wrong?

    • Stingray

It means it didn’t apply.  The new one is 5.5.893

  • Daniel Clifford

Still nada! How long does a roll-out take? Multiple days? Hours?

    • http://twitter.com/thewrightman Jon Wright

If you are getting the “Check for updates is not available…” then you will need to turn off “sync over wifi only” on battery/data manager>data delivery>social applications. If that fails then you can choose

      1. Manually update.
      2. Perform a factory reset.
      3. Forget about the update.

      • Daniel Clifford

Never had sync over wifi turned on. One of the lucky legacy Verizon customers. Unlimited data still.
        How easy is easy?

      • http://www.facebook.com/ben.parra Ben Parra

How does one manually update?  Download via another method?

  • http://profiles.google.com/northend999 B J Books

Got the update today.  Prior to the update I’d been having problems with data access and strength of signal at work.  So before I started the update, I was sitting at my desk with my amazing 1X signal .  Saw the update was available, so switched over to WiFi to pull it.  After completion of the update….I was sitting at my desk with a 4G signal (2 bars).  This update is already paying dividends for me.

  • Pl_tice

After update do you still have root or is it locked out?

    • http://twitter.com/thewrightman Jon Wright

      I kept root.

  • Anonymous

    Nice!

  • Guest

Has anyone been able to execute a new benchmark test with the new update to see if the readings are higher?

  • Wpryjmak

This update makes my phone work amazing! Used to endlessly toggle 3g/4g at work, now im solid 4 bars if 4g all the time.

  • Anonymous

DAMMMMM, This update made all the difference in the world. The camera is as fast as the RAZR’s and has zero lag. Incredible. I loved my Bionic before and I love it even more now. Thank you MOTO… GREAT JOB!!!

    • Anonymous

I feel the same way. I do love my razr more because of the display and smart actions and build quality.

Any one getting random Reboots still?  I applied the other day using the recovery method.  I’m not rooted (I know, I know) but still get reboots.  Data is better, and so is the camera.  I’m just sick of the bionic boot up noise coming from my pants randomly.

    • Anonymous

If i were you i’d take it into a Verizon store and have them reload your OS. You may have had a glitch when it was first loaded. they can put your update in to. You will have to re-install all your apps but it may take away your reboots. Before all that though, I found that if you go to the market and look up all your apps, see what people are saying because an app update can also cause weird things like this. For instance, I installed a “screen adjuster” and after I installed it I could not install any apps from my SD card. I read on the reviews of the apps that someone figured out it was that app causing it. I turned off the screen adjuster and now I’m able to install apps from my SD card. I frequently look thru reviews a day or so after an update.

  • Jason Maggio

anyone else notice the battery usage is just redistributed? Android OS now takes 2/3 of my battery target than cell standby. I did forever root and the manual application of .893 last week. Am I the only one setting this behavior?

  • Anonymous

Updated last night. This phone runs smooooth, I can tell a big difference. Camera is a lot faster and finallllly the wine from the audio head jack is gone. Also I kept root without using forever root method?? Doesn’t get better than that :)

  • Anonymous

Haven’t had a single data drop since the update, I can pick up 4g in more areas, and my battery life has been great! Thanks Moto!

  • Osu992

Wow…much better reconnecting to 3G and 4G after dropping the signal. This will make morning and evening train commutes much less aggregating.

  • Radgatt

I got my update and updated the phone while driving down the road. Had it updated before I got to work. Great so far!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dave-Bailey/100001516454772 Dave Bailey

yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa i feel like  a proud nexus owner

  • Sk102704

The data connection is so much better! I barely had any signal in my office and when I did it would come and go.  Now I have more bars and it stays connected! That was the one issue that bothered me about my Bionic. Score!

    • Anonymous

Moto wants us to be happy that is why they keep putting work on all their devices unlike Samsung. Kudos for Moto :)

Awesome update, I agree the camera works a lot better so does Swype.thanks for the big update

I rooted in Novemeber. Unrooted last night. Still cant update!

  • http://twitter.com/K9Jago Bob Hoyle

I am glad it kept root after the update.  I was worried that Motorola might overwrite the file in the update to block that method. +1 for Motorola (been a while since I could say that)

  • T Hall

    Got it last Thursday:

    Battery Life Much Much Improved
Bluetooth can be left on without draining the battery
No more headphone hiss for me
Camera while faster still takes crappy pics

Overall very satisfied with the update.

    • Pags4272

Agree with all the above… but most importantly, no more data drops. Also, happy they fixed the bluetooth issue that was killing my battery, if left on. I remember the OG had this same issue with bluetooth when it first came out. You think they would have learned from it over 2 years later…

      • T Hall

Fortunately I did not have very many data drops, but the few I did have were frustrating.  A week ago I wanted to get rid of this thing for a Nexus, but I think I can hold out for awhile and see what ICS looks like on the Bionic.

    • Anonymous

I was a soak tester too, and thought the battery life had improved, but attributed it to my own bias/optimism. My only compaint is the I still have to manually connect to the bluetooth in our car’s stereo, but I can live with that since everything else seem’s greatly improved.

  • bffhusker

Hoping the update fixes the Bluetooth connectivity with my car. Bionic requires manual connect to Bluetooth. Old Droid autoconnected.  I have been patiently waiting for much needed improvements to a phone that was expensive and performed at an “average phone” standard.

    • Anonymous

I still do not autoconnect to our car stereo after the update. Maybe its the stereo’s problem — who knows.

      • bffhusker

Didn’t have any troubles with OG Droid connecting. Frustrating. Still haven’t received the update as of today.

  • Anonymous

If I’m rooted and on 5.8.894.XT875, would these bug fixes already be in place through the leaked ROMs?  OR will i need to downgrade back to stock and then update to get the fixes?

  • Patrick

Anyone else getting a check for update not available right now? Would love to get the update but I’ve tried everything with no luck…

    • 04stangman

I am getting the same thing in salt lake

      • Stretch

Under your setting make sure social application syncing is NOT set to wifi only.

        • http://twitter.com/thewrightman Jon Wright

          What ?

          • pokerpet

I had to go back to factory settings and then when it restarted it was with the new version – yippie.

        • http://twitter.com/rkein87 Rob Kein

This guy is right. That worked. Settings>Battery>Data Delivery>Social App>UNCHECK box.

        • Illinipoke98

I still get it.  It was unchecked so i checked it then unchecked again.  Also switched batter saver mode to perform with no luck.

    • http://twitter.com/mfg68 MFG

Yeah, I’m getting the same thing :(

    • Illinipoke98

Just read this.  I know my sim card is not the original.  May call Verizon later today.

“Are you using the same LTE SIM card which the Bionic was originally
activated on (and is therefore registered to on Verizon’s servers)?
I’ve heard there’s an issue (mentioned on some droidlife forum) that if
you’re using a different LTE SIM card in the device, that OTA updates do
not work.  Everything else will (phone calls, data etc).”

      • Larry

I am geting the “Not Availabe At This Time” message too.  I had to get a replacement Bionic in the begining so I guess my sim card is not original.  What do I do?  Anywhere else I can get help with this?

        • Illinipoke98

I’m guessing call or drop by your verizon store, I guess they can update the number of your sim card on Google’s servers or something.  I haven’t tried yet.

          • LionStone

Yea he needs to go in and have them give him another sim card. Two days after launch with my TB I knew it had bugs and got another new one and they gave me another sim.

        • Peter Palumbo

I doubt this is true. Have you received prior OTA updates? Then you’ll get this. It isn’t one MASS rollout, it’s staged in tiers. You’re just not in the initial waves…like myself.

          • Larry

There hasn’t been any other OTAs for this phone, and my last was an X so no LTE.  The last couple of days it said I was up to date, and now says not available.  Do I really need a new sim card?

        • gr8danish

I got the same error message… I figured it had to do with my device being rooted. I was wrong… Perform a factory data reset, and then after logging in to G, immediately perform the update. It should go through problem free.

      • Carrzy92

swapped my  LTE card in an ‘attempt’ to fix my 4G issues, still got the update

    • CaptM

I was just able to manually download and install in Phoenix, took about 3 minutes to download and about 5 or 6 to install.  Camera is definatly much better.  4G is rockin now (do a speedtest after you get the update).  Also, I’m not getting the interferance from the 4G to all of my speakers now like I was before.  Will be doing some more testing but so far, seems to run even better than before and I was not having all of the problems that I have been seeing in all of the forums. :)

Thanks guys for this. I had been checking but forgot to check recently.

  • Desamation

Too little too late from Motorola, already have email confirmation from Verizon that they are giving me a free Nexus for the problems I have endured for the last two months.

    • Carrzy92

      . . . teach me your ways! 0_o

      • Desamation

True Story…..And I don’t know if I can ever trust another Motorola product after this debacle.

        • Stingray

I can. I have tried HTC and Samsung phones and had HORRIBLE experiences with them.  I have had Motorola phones since the v125 and every Motorola phone I’ve had since then has been great.  Then I mistakenly went with the LG env1 and had so many problems, I went to the Samsung Glyde, and that was trash. Then I went to the env2 and it worked decently.  Then I went to the Moto Droid1 and it was a solid phone. I mistakenly then went with HTC Thunderbolt for the 4G and lock-in the Unlimited Plan, and that phone was just plain bad and HTC broke many promises about releasing 2.3.4. I was forced into a Droid Charge and that was just as bad, if not worse than the Thunderbolt.  Finally asked to go to Bionic and it’s had it’s share of issues, but this update fixed it AND Motorola did promise a fix to the Bionic in 30-60 days from their announcement.  Motorola is the only one that has kept its customers informed about updates to its phones, unlike HTC, LG, and ESPECIALLY Samsung.

          • Keith Sumner

AMEN! I have had similar problems, went through 7 Samsung Glydes, then I went through 3 LG voyagers, what horrible devices, I had a Motorola Q which was awesome, Motorola Droid which was awesome, and now the Bionic which is awesome, had minor bugs at launch but of course they’ve fixed them as promised.

Motorola is a solid company and I’ve been very pleased.

          • Anonymous

I went from Moto to Samsung to HTC then back to Moto again. HTC wasn’t bad, Samsung was very very bad. Moto is great. I just wish Moto had the same developer community that HTC gets. Still the Bionic is awesome and Moto kept their promise to fix things and get the update out quickly. Good job Moto!

    • Anonymous

Can you forward your confirmation, or provide a screen shot?  I tried to do this, but they wouldn’t do anything.

  • Bionic

So how long until we have root again?

    • http://clearrants.tumblr.com clearrants

should’ve done the forever root. mine updated fine and still have root.

this is currently the only way to get back root on 893: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1279825

      • Dexterslab0329

I still have root after the update.

        • Anonymous

I still have root too and I didn’t use the forever root method

  • Bionic

The data handoff is for sure better.  Very nice

  • Dane Butters

I love that this update, and subsequent versions, were leaked a month or two ago.

  • 04stangman

Nothing for my bionic in salt lake…

  • Dexterslab0329

I just updated my phone this morning and WOW, the camera is a lot better.

    • sfbonil

thats what i have been waiting for to hear,

    • Anonymous

Indeed it is. I was part of the soak test, and found I could take several pictures in the time it took me to (maybe) get a single shot before the update. That was one of about 3 must-fix things I wanted in this update. The other 2 seem to be fixed as well, at least for me: high-pitched whine and 4G/3G issues.

    • Anonymous

I am glad you are enjoying it.

Didn’t fix the issue with exiting the car dock and not going to the home screen… instead it acts like the “back button” and goes to the last app you were in prior to inserting in the car dock….  so freaking annoying. Does anyone know a fix for this?

    • Pags4272

That’s weird… mine always went back to the home screen after exiting the car doc… even when on .886

      • Anonymous

Do this, browse around on a 5-6 web pages then put the phone in the car dock *without* first going to the homescreen. Then, while in the car dock, hit Menu ==> Exit. It will take you back to your browser (or whatever app you were in just prior to putting the phone in the car dock) where the only way to get back to the home screen form there is to continually hit the “back” button (not the browser back button, but the actual soft button) until you  eventually get back to the home screen.  GRRRR!

        • Pags4272

I’ll have to try that.. i think i usually have it on the home screen prior to docking it.

    • Bionic

      mine has been fine

    • Osu992

Simarly, when attached to the standard dock and the bedside app is activated, the home button sometimes becomes disabled and it isn’t possible to return to the home screen without unplugging the phone first.

  • Shannon Curtis

    Yay Thank you! Downloading Now!

  • Anonymous

Excellent. Kept checking it yesterday and wasn’t getting any updates. Starting to download now. Does that earn me a free tablet? :)
