Thickness Comparison: LTE vs. GSM Galaxy Nexus

At some point in the night, Google updated their Galaxy Nexus landing page to include a picture of the LTE variant that is headed to the U.S. “later this year” (according to Verizon). A couple of things were instantly noticeable:  a color change and thickness difference. As you can see in the picture above, the LTE version appears to have gone with an almost all-black posterior rather than the metallic grey backing that graced the GSM version of the phone. It’s not ugly, but personally, I preferred the color scheme on the non-U.S. version. To each their own though.

On the thickness note, you should be incredibly happy. We knew it would be thicker than the GSM version since it comes equipped with an LTE radio, but this isn’t much. Google gave us the dimensions almost a week ago, and at 9.47mm, is not a thick device by any means. It’s thinner than the Bionic, Rezound, Thunderbolt, and Charge. It’s thin, folks.

Cheers Michael K!

Thumbs up on the minimal thickness gain.  =o)

If you look at the charging ports, they should be the same color on both phones, so the “color change” I think is more likely just a difference in the picture quality of both pictures.  The LTE pictures are slightly blurrier, fussier, and under lit. Also, the LTE pic doesn’t have a power button symbol.  Early test model perhaps? Hoping the color is not gloomy grey.

just talked to a verizon supervisor… he said they are HOPING for the Gnex to be released by the end of the year.. but they are not sure. He said 4G was a bit tricky on the device.

    :(((

  • http://www.scaryuncledevin.com/ Devin Rodriguez

Now if only Samsung could find a way to put a non-pentile AMOLED in there…

  • Anthony Vella

I like the color scheme on the US version but hopefully it will be a deep, dark black, rather than a lighter/mid gray. Also, the grip on the back will be so nice since I heard the material used reduces exterior heat. The Droid Charge overheats like crazy and makes the back of the phone sweat. Can we get a comparison from the US Nexus to the DROID Charge?

  • Booboolala2000

All the thickness is gained by the middle layer. Looks like they took the power button indicator away. That’s where the extra bulk is, in the “vanilla” ice cream part of the sandwich. Its not the LTE radio, its the VZW bloat making it thicker in the middle.

  • Anonymous

I prefer the look of the international version, but the contrasting colors might have made the LTE version visually bigger, so I can see why the decision was made (if that’s why the decision was made).

  • Booboolala2000

Wheres the Verizon branding everyone has been going apeshit over? Please come by Dec8th

  • http://profiles.google.com/pickture Josh Meyer

The only reason there’s a color difference here is because this is a 3D applet render. It doesn’t even show different branding on the back. What makes you think this is the verizon version?

  • hightop

I have to disagree with the majority here, I think the black LTE version looks way better. I don’t really like silver electronics though neither color option would give me any pause, I would buy it if it were two tone lime green and pink.

    • Anonymous

I think a shinier black finish would have been better than the matte finish that we are seeing in this render.

      • Cam

I think the problem is that it would be slippy-er.

    • Cam

Agreed, except for the lime green and pink. Now, lime green, black, and white I can do.
The all black version is looking pretty sexy. +1 For the Verizon version IMO.

  • Ahsan

    Which one is which? LOL

  • Anonymous

Both of the images you guys have up are still poor renders.  This could be completely different than what it actually looks like.  If you scroll in all the way you can tell it’s just a render, that’s probably why the docking dots look so weird.

  • Alex

Some people just look for any reason to complain or panic

    • FortitudineVincimus

so your complaining about people complaining :)

      • Alex

        You could call it that

  • Matt

Couldn’t care less about the slight difference, but why change it to black? I like the GSM version better.

  • http://www.facebook.com/dannyborst Danny Borst

Im liking the new color scheme

  • Stating El Obvious

I like the black better….I want this damn phone already!

  • Anonymous

Anyone else notice some weird things about this render?  The 3 dock dots are very tiny, the power button is bigger and higher up on the side of the phone. The camera looks totally different, including the LED flash.

I think this is just a bad render or something, how could it be cost effective for Samsung to make so many changes to a device that just has an LTE chip in it?

The color is not represented well either, the bottom of the pictures you can’t even see the different color shades.  The backshot has terrible resolution, even making the “grip” look like a different type.

Overall I don’t think these accurately show the LTE version at all.

    • johnny

was just thinking the same thing.

  • mcwhackthing

    u rendered bro?

  • http://www.elementary-project.com Kevin McDole

This deal’s getting worse all the time! Lol.

  • Anonymous

The torture is unbearable . It’s so bad I might have to rent a Razr and lose more money.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LQNNJDZQIWIIHJWUIUV7R24XAM Aaron

Have to agree with Kellex, I like the gunmetal color a lot better. Also is it just me or does the flash look way smaller and a different color on the US version?

  • Anonymous

No power symbol above the button on the LTE version? Total Fail

    /s

  • Anonymous

Why are you guys freaking out. Google already posted a video of the lte version and it looks almost exactly the same.

    http://www.youtube.com/googlenexus#p/c/72771BACEB2CF14D/2/oXrgIFMfsaQ

Must be a slow news day.

  • Anonymous

Everyone good on the thickness front?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Emaw-Kennedy/504157652 Michael Emaw Kennedy

I just want the phone already!

  • Anonymous

Kellex let me know when Verizon releases it. I’m going to uk to be happy.

  • Anonymous

I like the color scheme better on the GSM vs the LTE version, but in the end, I will (reluctantly) put a silicone or some similar case on it to protect against the inadvertent drop, so the color scheme won’t really show much anyway.

  • Anonymous

As long as Ice Cream sandwich is the same I could care less if its .53mm thicker.

  • El El Kool J

once you go black you never go back… :P

    • Mr Manville

but if youve gone white you know its alright

    • Mr Manville

try out some asain switch back to caucasion?

  • JDRyan

Thanks for fixing the angle Kellex…..MUCH better:-) I’m not feeling the black though. I definitely like the other version much better. I’m keeping an open mind though cuz sometimes pictures aren’t always the best representation.

  • Anonymous

Yikes…half the comments are about the LTE angle…and the other half are Kellex saying he corrected the error…LOL!!

LTE version looks damn sexy to me!

  • Anonymous

Gsm looks much better. Two-tone more distinct. Someone let me hold there’s? I don’t need it to work just to carry.

  • EC8CH

Nice Google brand on the back, but leaked photos have shown Verizon 4G LTE branding instead.

  • Toddman214

Looks like the image has now been corrected?

    • Toddman214

Also, I’m sure its just an illusion, but the lte version looks like it has less curvature to it.

  • http://twitter.com/strifejester Justin Ellenbecker

So they took a cool looking phone shipped ti over seas and then for our release they give us a big middle finger with some ugly POS, everyday I get closer to saying screw this phone.  I have Nexus S 4G that will see ICS soon enough.  RAZR may be the better option and I think Verizon knows that without ICS this phoen is going to be a flop.

    • r8r

Oh yeah they changed the color and put an lte radio in it, so now it’s a pos huh? This makes a lot of sense troll.

    • http://profiles.google.com/kedmond Kazem Edmond

      You’re out of your mind.

  • IzzyD

Folks i’ve seen both models in hand and actually have a VZW version already in use. There is barely any difference in thickness to say the least. If any of you people think you’ll notice .53mm ( .021 inches or 5 sheets of paper for comparison) you are nuts.

Second thing I noticed is the back. The picture on the right side is what the VZW version looks like excluding the marking it has showing above. Mine says 4G LTE with Google in place of Samsung and that is it. As for the color of the housing the non-US is a little nice but nothing to special I really would not worry about it. And if you are that picky then cry me a river its a phone for god sake.

    • http://twitter.com/OptimusIM Olatunji

ok spill the beans. how did you get one???

      • IzzyD

Wish I could but I’m not willing to ruin a good thing I have going. I have most all VZW android devices before they are out. And no i don’t work for them or any of the mfgs. Just gotta know the right people is all is the best i can say.

great device tho I must say. Just needs more software updates that is for sure. And you folks aught to be happy it has not been released yet or you would have been flipping a lid of software bugs. So give it a rest and let them get it done CORRECTLY.

        • Anonymous

Steve Wozniak?  Is that you?  :)

    • TROLOLOL

“Folks i’ve seen both models in hand and actually have a VZW version already in use.”
ha. good one. you must be mattg96′s piano student’s mom.

      • IzzyD

WTH is that suppose to mean.

  • John

Not bashing the post but was a thickness really a game changer for anyone?

    • TROLOLOL

no but reading the comments here, the color might be… ugh.

  • Anonymous

Much preferred the original colors…STOP SCREWING STUFF UP VERIZON!!!

    • TROLOLOL

don’t they say black is appears more slimming???

  • http://twitter.com/guts311 Justin

What’s up with even the new LTE version pic? Yours shows gray contacts on the side instead of gold.. And both angles of it just look grainy and blurry. Can you use the one’s that people posted below like:  http://i43.tinypic.com/ix5yr5.png   ??

    • Anonymous

And the power button looks totally different and is higher up on the side?

Something is wrong here, I think this is just a bad picture overall, seems unlikely they would change so much.  We’ve never heard of any of the LTE testers saying there was a color change, only that it was a little thicker.

  • viewthis74

“I preferred the color scheme on the non-U.S. version”… i agree

    • TROLOLOL

don’t they say black is appears more slimming???

  • geno villafano

I’m far more distraught then I should be over the color change :/

    • TROLOLOL

don’t they say black is appears more slimming??? but you’re still gonna get one, amirite?

      • geno villafano

        Undoubtably

  • Dominick DeVito

oh yeah – the darker materials lead to bloatware for sure

    /s

  • Anonymous

Lets not forget the LTE is much faster.. she will loose that additional thickness in no time..

  • Anonymous

If I hadnt jumped on the iPhone 4S I would most definately get this phone or the Rezound. So happy for Android!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1024028854 Leo Li

release it already, stop teasing us, VERIZON!!!

  • Mannequinsmiles

     accurate comparison

    • http://twitter.com/JFMFT Josh Fowler

Kellex – please use Mannequinsmiles comparison photos. Much better quality… more accurate representation. Please! :) Update the post!

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

We already updated the photo up top. :P

      • Mannequinsmiles

        didnt catch the update. A+

    • Teabling

This makes the black look amazing! I’m all for it!

    • Aran Miller

This picture shows a better lightening on the LTE variant. like they were both taken in the same lightening, and it definitely makes the LTE one look more attractive. Thanks for the post Mannequinsmiles

  • Anonymous

LTE version seems a little bloated..

  • http://twitter.com/JFMFT Josh Fowler

It’s a 6% thickness difference. 6%. Noticeable, sure, but not enough to really change anything. Y’all should be happy it isn’t the 13″ thickness of the Thunderbolt!

    • Brady McEwen

      13 inches…..13 geographical seconds……o_O

  • Dominick DeVito

I’m waiting for a Moto troll to say how thin the Razr is at 7.1mm when that measurement doesn’t include it’s muffin top.

    • Anonymous

No kidding.  I think thickness should be defined as the width of a steel slot that you can push the phone through.  I think I might make one at 7.2 mm and jam a Razr through it with a 10 ton press.  I’ll be sure to post of the results of the “7.1 mm” thick phone…

      • Anonymous

Results just in.. Razr didn’t fit. And now we will try the Gnex. Ooops didn’t make it either. Guess that was a dumb test. Just sayin’

        • Anonymous

Or a dumb interpretation of my point.  Just sayin’.  I just think it’s funny manufacturers quote the thinnest portion of their device as “device thickness”.  Motorola, Samsung, HTC, I don’t care who it is; it’s misleading marketing crap.

          • Anonymous

Or maybe a dumb point I interpreted. Why do you think its funny that a manufacture quote the thinnest portion of their device as device thickness? Companies will market what people want and if what people want right now is a thin phone thats what they will market and to market the thickest part of the phone would be counterproductive. Its not that hard a concept to grasp if you think about it. Just sayin’

          • Anonymous

            Sigh.

          • C-Law

They should give measurements for thickest part too. Im sure they are somewhere but I haven’t seen them yet. I looked at the razr instore and my first thought was how huge the top was compared to the rest. I lost all interest after that

          • Jadam6118

            you guys just sayin’?

          • Anonymous

whole lotta fightin on this post…

          • Anonymous

If it is 90% of the phone I don’t see it as dumb. They never say the entire phone they just say it is so and so thick. Clearly people are going to know it is larger in places from looking at it.

    • TROLOLOL

Razr’s got a muffin top, Galaxy Nexus has got a fat bottom.

      • EC8CH

i’d take a fat bottom over a muffin top

      • dkbetts

Junk in the trunk.  Not fat bottom.  Check it ooout!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LQNNJDZQIWIIHJWUIUV7R24XAM Aaron

Same for the Nexus, only the bump is at the bottom.

    • TyroneBiggums

This phone is wider than 9.47mm too, since the bottom is wider and the screen is curved…so?

      • Anonymous

how does a curved screen have anything to do with how wide the phone is???

    • Guest

angelFAGGIT77 will chime in when his mommy wakes him up from his nap.

    • Anonymous

People act like that minor hump gets in the way of anything. Please, it doesn’t take away from the phone’s thin form factor. Just today a coworker admired my phone, holding it and said: Damn that is thin! Did he say: Damn that’s thin… except for this little hump in the back.

    • Anonymous

I hate Moto and their humps. My hump my hump my hump. When did that design become sleek??? Can’t wait to dump my Droid X for the G-Nex!

  • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Bad angle on the first photo. We have since fixed it.

  • Dave

As far as the coloring goes. The one on the right (the GSM version) looks like a press shot with different lighting. The one on the left is a render from the http://www.google.com/nexus/ tech page with a 360 degree view. Different lighting situations, so I wouldn’t be so sure on the difference in color tones.

    • http://twitter.com/JFMFT Josh Fowler

I noticed the same thing, too.
