Four cores may have an advantage when you only look at performance and power consumption (although if you hammer all four cores constantly, then your battery won’t last), but price and size are also another major factors. Saying a chip has X cores is almost as meaningless as saying it runs at Y Mhz. Different SOCs have different optimizations and features. There is a lot more to a SOC than just the CPU. If you spend more resources on CPU cores, then you have fewer resources for other modules.

But if you multithread (which what you are supposed to do now on modern programming), one program can still take the advantage of it of all cores assuming the OS can support it. And considering that 95% of the time, the other main cores won’t get powered according to the demo, Nvidia has really thought about power management requirement.

Multiple cores is actually the most cheapest way to go for increasing speed in modern computing because we are reaching the physical limits of silicon until nanotechnology kicks in. Also, since ARM licenses the primary core (Cortex-A9), it’s like Nvidia can redesign a 2Ghz dual-core ARM processor. Again, the 3rd and 4th cores according to the demo won’t get activated until the OS deems to need them. Smarter core utilization is the way to go given the current architecture state.

CPU wise this should have far more performance than the A5 but GPU wise they’ll probably be similar. The SGX543MP2 might even still be slightly faster.

Having four cores doesn’t seem like the most intelligent way to increase speed. In android programming, (as far as I can tell with my limited experience), you do parallel programming by launching background services. For most use cases, 2 faster cores > 4 slower cores because you probably won’t have 3 background services going. I think 4 cores might make sense in a tablet where you have a huge battery and do more resource intensive things (gaming, music production, video editing), but I think 2 cores is probably the optimal configuration for phones.

Even if you don’t use the power, you’ll use the energy savings. Besides, what’s the harm? If I could get 900AWHP in my car with lower fuel consumption and the same or less maintenance, I wouldn’t complain.

Partially agree on the A5. GPU yes. But closed-system of the iOS helps the A5
a ton. There’s so much assembly optimization occurring in the iOS drivers that
you cannot do in the open-Android environment. Which is why you need a ton of dis-assembly experience for the Android-on-iphone projects (idroid). I trust in
Nvidia more than Apple to push the GPU envelope if needed.

As for quad-core’s, let’s face it. TODAY, we don’t need it. 99% of us today
are not going to use apps that need all 4 cores. But that’s not what Nvidia is
showing us here. Nvidia is saying “if you need it, you have it”. The most
impressive thing in the demo is the dynamic reallocation of CPU resources on the
fly. Nvidia can push for performance while keeping on par for energy consumption
in future CPU architectures. And though this, has called out other CPU makers to
see if they can keep up. This is going to make the CPU game alot more
interesting.

Since I don’t game on my phone, and definitely won’t be playing warcraft or whatever they call it, the quad core is overkill for my usage. Dual core along with lte will suit my needs just fine for the next two years. However, this is promising technology for the mini computers we call phones.
