Gingerbread Update for the HTC Thunderbolt is Available Now!

The Gingerbread (Android 2.3.4) update for the HTC Thunderbolt is now available for everyone to pull.  All you have to do is go into Settings>Software update and “Check new.”  Go get it everyone!

Full changelog here.

*Note – If you receive the OTA, please let us know if Google Talk with Video is working.  On the leak, it looks like it should work, but it cannot connect to actual video calls.

Cheers Chris, Raymar, and Owen!

  • mdeblaz

Google Talk with Video – works with a computer… but only the back camera works.  Haven’t tested with another phone

    • http://twitter.com/djmackdaddymc Mathew Call

I tested it with both and on mine the result is the same, I can call out and it works (although dang laggy even with plenty of bandwidth) but only with the back camera. No option to switch. Can’t receive video calls. In fact I show up as not having a webcam in Gtalk. Also it doesn’t receive text chats while on an active video. I have to leave the video and go to the text chat area to receive chats. They’re supposed to be overlayed. L A M E ! ! ! I’m feeling a strange urge to root and flash…

FYI for the rooted crowd..the new Thunderstick GEN II is based off this build.

    • Anonymous

I noticed this build has a newer number and newer baseband though, or is it just Verizon’s numbering?

  • Eyefixstuff

Highly recommend rooting and using BAMF SOAB rom. Sense 3.5 is amaaaaaazing.

    • Rick

    • Anonymous

I woke up to an already updated phone as well.

  • Dadi2

No update screen just dissapears wtf

  • Jslynch

I haven’t been able to pull it, been trying sonce last night. East coast.

    • LionStone

  • Rod

The customizable dock do work you have to put it on a dock in order to work.

  • Inferno

    gps finally works

    • palomosan

If you have rooted, your GPS would’ve been working for a long time now.

      • Inferno

Had my TB rooted since launch day n try many differnet guides from people but none of them had worked but now with the update it finally does

  • TheLuxScientific

I can’t believe it after all these months! Yaaaaaayyyy! K, now I’m over it….where’s my ICS?

  • JY20

Just d/l via OTA about 2 hours ago here in Northern California.  Confirming the following:
    1.) VM notification is broken.
2.) Gchat for video works sometimes.  When it does work it only works with the back camera and no option to change to front camera.

    • Anonymous

I’m in NorCal too (Mendocino County), and no update here yet.

      • JY20

Should’ve mentioned I d/led in the Peninsula (San Mateo County)

        • Anonymous

I’m 120 miles northwest of SF in Redwood Valley, halfway between Ukiah and Willits.

    • http://twitter.com/djmackdaddymc Mathew Call

Same here. At first Gtalk with video wouldn’t work at all on wi-fi, only LTE (didn’t try 3G) but only with back cam. Rebooted again and now I can at least call out over wi-fi or LTE but can’t receive video calls. Still no icon to switch to front cam. This is a real J O K E ! ! !

  • Edwin Marrero

    I got my update

  • Nick D’Ambrosi

I clicked Check new and it says “Checking for update” but then nothing…

  • Anonymous

Yay! Been downloading for like an hour and a half lol….still like 1/3 to go….Plus, even though I live in Northern California, I don’t have 4G. You’d think I would.

  • Anonymous

I’d say this is about 3 months too late. But I’m glad they got this out just in time for the ICS announcement.

  • Anonymous

Not sure why, but now it messed up LauncherPro as my default. I cleared the default of LP being the default home just so I could see how the “new” Gingerbread home was with Sense and it won’t ass me which home launcher I want as my default now..

Anyone know how I could force LP to be my default home?? Any help would be appreciated!

    • Billyrouth2000

Use home switcher in the market

  • Anonymous

    Not sure why, but this

  • http://www.facebook.com/markschambach Mark Schambach

The change log published on the Verizon site mentions a new customizable dock.  It does not appear to be included in the update… but wow is this UI faster!  Screen colors actually look crisper too.

  • Elixe

Is voice mail notifications really broken?

    • Kip

I’d like to know this as well. Kind of sucks that phone features don’t work on a phone.

    • JF

Just finished testing this and yes, voicemail notification is broken in the update.

      • Billyrouth2000

Gingerbread broke the vm notification on my droid x as well then 3the weeks latef it k
        just went back to working.

  • TB User

Help!  My download failed; went to try it again and it says “No update available”.  The status says the same…failed download…any ideas?

  • Stateofdesign

I’m rooted, but no custom ROM.

I downloaded, auto-rebooted. Then stopped halfway, a little exclamation point and android cartoon character popped up. Then clockwork Recovery came up on the top of my screen. Signature couldn’t be verified.I have options… reboot, install update.zip from the SD card, etc. Can anyone please tell me what to choose? Thanks!

    • Stateofdesign

I selected “install update.zip” and it tells me there’s no such file. So I select reboot. Now my phone is in a cycle of rebooting constantly. Any help from the community would be appreciated. You can contact me at stateofdesign [at] gmail [dot] com.

      Thanks in advance!

  • http://twitter.com/dirtycrow Ken

  • Guttatae22

if only it was sense 3.0 included

  • Anonymous

Who doesn’t love half ass software updates 6 months too late!

    • Anonymous

What the heck are you talking about. The update should have come out a day after it was released?

These recent leaks have been pretty good and have been running them for several months.

Go back to your “Droid Charge” and wait a while longer.

      • GotSka81

I think what he’s talking about is the fact that Gingerbread has been available for a very long time and it’s unacceptable for manufacturers to take so long to release an update.  My OG Droid has been rooted and running GB for as long as I can remember now, relatively bug free.  Why is it that a company like HTC can’t get their software updates together?

        • Anonymous

Why is that Motorola just released Gingerbread for the year old Droid 2 a few weeks ago? Why is it that the Droid Charge still does not have Gingerbread?

Those that don’t understand why it takes time and each phone is different should take charge of the phone manufacturers and service providers and show them how it’s done. Because it sounds so simple doesn’t it… :)

          • Anonymous

I love how developers in our community are able to do this in a few days, meanwhile these money suxer corporations take MILLIONS of years to release it… SAD!

          • babadush

exactly. watching these people argue over sense and gingerbread is seriously comical. It’s like watching people argue over blur or touchwiz. if you guys don’t want to wait go buy an iphone or root your friggin phone and shut the hell up. It’s obnoxious to see all of you people complain about gingerbread. it’s not gingerbread, it’s not htc. it’s verizon. Developers can port this stuff so fast and you guys want to wait for a company who doesn’t even make software release software? do you realize how absurd that is?

          • GotSka81

“It’s obnoxious to see all of you people complain ___________”

            Fill in blank.
            Realize hypocrisy.
            Repeat.

          • GotSka81

It’s obvious that each phone is different, my droid is just an example…but I think you’ll agree that if the underground devs are able to get gingerbread running on the thunderbolt then the maker of the phone surely should be able to (given that they have access to resources that the underground community doesn’t).

You really seem to have a chip on your shoulder…maybe you should read another blog if you’re just going to flame posts stating your own objectionable opinion as fact.  Everyone has differing opinions and this is a open forum to express it.  If you don’t like their opinions, don’t read them.

          • Anonymous

Where do you think the devs got Gingerbread that we’ve been running on the Bolt for so long….. HTC. The devs didn’t write the Gingerbread software, they simply took one of the many HTC leaks and got it to us so we could enjoy it while we waited for them to officially release it. It doesn’t appear that you realize this.

  • Jeff Flory

And this happens just an hour after I install the leak lol. Is the leak the same as the OTA?

  • Jeff Flory

Damn it! No sooner than I download the leak, this happens LOL. Is the leak the exact same as the OTA?

    • Balthazar B

You’ll probably have to wait an hour or two before you’ll know. Wouldn’t be surprised if there were some minor differences.

  • Balthazar B

OK, how long before this release is deodexed and root obtained?

    • Mr. Joshua

It was actually done before it was released because the build was leaked a day or two ago.

      • Balthazar B

Mainly want to run the officially released radios on my AOSP ROM…

    • http://twitter.com/xsicRagex sicRage

Never would’ve thought I’d see the day. Downloading it now. Holy freaking cow. Only reason I haven’t rooted is because I want to be able to test my phone just like all my customers have but if Google Video chat doesn’t work on this I’m seriously going to take a hammer to it. That is thee number one feature I’ve been waiting for.

    • Balthazar B

      There’s always Th3ory ROMs…

  • Balthazar B

Does Gtalk w/video work on this release?

    • Anonymous

      • Billy Jenkins

I dont think he was being serious. I think he was pointing out that him and everyone else who rooted their phones like me already had gingerbread for a while.

        • Balthazar B

And 2.3.5. Would be nice to see what version radios were released with this build.
