DROID3 Pops Up in New GLBenchmark: Still an OMAP Processor, Wipes Floor with Most Devices

I’m not exactly sure where rumors of the DROID3 having a Tegra 2 started, but we’ve known for quite some time now that it’ll sport an OMAP 4430 dual-core processor.  So today’s discovery by the folks at AnandTech through a GLBenchmark that just went live, isn’t all that new, except for the actual benchmark score part.  This is looking to be a much more powerful device than I think we had originally thought.  In fact, after reading the review of the Milestone3 from last week, we weren’t sure it could even compete with some single core devices – boy was that review wrong.

As you can see in the “Egypt” bench below, the DROID3 and it’s qHD screen come in only behind the LG Optimus 3D which happens to be running the same processor, but with a lower screen resolution.  That’s right, the D3 outperformed the Optimus 2X (G2x in the states), HTC Sensation and the HTC EVO 3D.

In the “Pro” bench it came in slightly behind a couple of those previously mentioned devices, but still performed above devices like the Motorola Atrix and DROIDX2.  Impressive, to say the least.

And we should note that we’re starting to doubt that original July 7 release date that we heard last week a little – and only because we now know that the 7th marks the day we see data tiers.  It’s definitely just around the corner though, which we learned from the MAP (minimum advertised price) status that it received over the weekend.

What do you guys think?  Maybe we shouldn’t be sleeping on this device even if it lacks 4G LTE?

Via:  AnandTech

Cheers Anthony and Bryan!

  • Full Function Docking

    Hey DroidLife!,
Would you please keep pushing for the Atrix style smartphone!  I am due for an upgrade and I really want the functionality of a laptop/desktop for my next smartphone.  (full size keyboard, monitor, sound and even a tv hookup.)

I don’t want to invest in another computer or tablet, when I have a full function smartphone.

    Thxs!

Love the phone, hate the rate plans! Sprint, here I come! Goodbye Moto!

  • JoeInMO

I think many are getting caught up on processor speed rather than features.

    • Anonymous

Very true. I have a tablet with Tegra 2 and am not impressed. The graphics are very slow. Its likely a matter of immature drivers, but again that’s software.

Droid3 = Verizon. I’ve got 5 phones on their Family plan, but no more. With the new data plan, I would be crazy to stick with Verizon. Verizon phone = FAIL.

Thank you a lot for giving everyone remarkably memorable possiblity to read critical reviews from this blog. It is always so sweet and also packed with a lot of fun for me and my office peers to search your site no less than thrice every week to learn the fresh items you will have. And indeed, I am just always astounded with your staggering techniques you serve. Some two points in this posting are essentially the best I have ever had.

sgs2 only benchmarks well because of crappy resolution and i/o memory tricks

  • James_Ever

Dammit, I would like to get some confirmation on when this device is going to be released instead of leaked projections on when this device is available. This is getting frustrating really fast. So when is the NEW projected release date going to be?

  • Anonymous

I want Verizon to go all out and actually get a powerful phone that won’t be outdated in a heartbeat and won’t have a locked bootloader. I understand that Verizon sees an unlocked bootloader and thinks to themselves “oh crud now they can steal crap from us”. um no? We like unlocked bootloaders because we want to be able to overclock our phones or install a new interface on our phones, or perhaps even continue to get updates for our phone long after the original company has stopped updating the phone.

  • Anonymous

The D3 is looking much better than I thought it would, given the earlier review.  I’d have to see the screen in person to judge whether pentile is big deal or not.

The big question is D3 or MyTouch 4G Slide. Hmm…

  • Booboolala2000

Yeah. I’ll be passing on any more motorola purchases. The Xoom was my last. Almost July and still no word on LTE? And now they are switching processors? Total joke.

It’s *really* funny when a bunch of 2 year old Android phones can whip the iPhone 4 in graphics performance. I’m goin’ Droid 4 Life.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=716789798 Lonnie Kerchief

This benchmark is a “little” skewed. Notice the 3GS “outperforms” the 4? The reason is because this test was always done at the native resolution of the phone, not the same render resolution. This somewhat invalidates the tests because the FPS tests were done at different resolutions on different phones. That’s why iPhone 4 scored the lowest, because it has the highest native resolution. That’s also why 2 year old phones scored so high, because their screens are much lower resolution, hence less pixels need to be rendered.

Not trying to defend iPhone, just stating facts.

      • Anonymous

I understand what you’re saying, but in order to get a true picture of the phone’s performance, wouldn’t you always run at native resolution? Running the test at the lowest common denominator for all the devices might give you a picture of raw speed, but wouldn’t be an accurate representation of real-world performance (which frankly, is all you’re gonna care about in the end).

Additionally, while the iPhone 4 is indeed a higher-res phone, it’s not *that* much higher than most of the Android phones running at 800×480. The ppi on the iPhone is ~326 while that on the Droids is somewhere between 255 and 270.

Just a little different perspective :)

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=716789798 Lonnie Kerchief

Not necessarily. A lot of games have internal rendering resolutions lower than the full screen resolution to improve performance. They even do it on the PS3 and XBox 360 more than some people realize. Most 360 games only run at an internal resolution of 1280×720 (720P), some even lower.

You’re right, though, the iPhone 4 score shouldn’t be as low as it shows because of resolution alone. It does outperform the 3GS, though, so that leaves the question as to why this test shows it that much lower than it. Just makes me question the true validity of the test.

  • Granted

I think it’s very per person. I have only 3G but couldn’t care less because I’m on wifi almost every hour of the day, and when I’m away from my home network I never really have a reason to do any heavy data lifting. So of course in my case, 4G doesn’t mean much, I’d always be much more interested in what kind of specs a new phone had.

But still… regardless of my individual uses, I still think tiered data plans is complete bullshit, and is absolutely another stupid, greedy thing Verizon is doing to the detriment of their customer’s happiness. Like someone else said, they aren’t hard up for money, which totally just points these moves towards pure unadulterated greed. So I really hope a whole slew of informed Verizon customers do actually drop them and switch to another carrier.

But alas, your normal Verizon customer isn’t informed, and or stupid, and probably won’t even notice their bill go up, or when they get angry because it did, they will show their indifference by continuing to pay and stay connected with Verizon. Of course another annoying point for some, myself included, is the fact that you may have quite a few friends or family on Verizon with you, and it would be quite a huge deal to try to convince everyone in your circle to switch carriers, especially if they don’t understand the issue very well. So basically it’s a lose, lose, lose, lose situation, and Verizon is laughing all the way to the bank, knowing they have all these unhappy customers wrapped around their little finger.

So, good job Verizon, just like anyone or any company that becomes to large and successful for their own good, you’ve forgotten who put you into that seat of power and success in the first place. And you do absolutely nothing to please and show appreciation to the people that pay your salaries and help fund that new vacation home. Instead, you slap us all in the face at every chance you get.

    • Ian Wilson

Oh please, how is this a crap phone? You sound like any other person regurgitating this info; it’s mainly just rumors so far. LTE isn’t a practical option for most people in the country yet seeing as how the network is in early stages of development. No need to complain about the bootloader either, because if this is a popular phone, developers will find a way. Blur is pointless but custom roms can (hopefully) fix that. The Droid 3 is looking like a solid option the more we learn, and it isn’t even the flagship device… Bionic and Galaxy S II anyone?

      • rj

Here is what I am up against regarding 4g or 3g….there is NO hope of getting 4g in my near future.  That said, who knows in a year or so what I will have in my area.  If i DONT get a 4g phone when I renew next month I have to wait another 2 years for a better phone or pay the price.  Not an attractive option imho.

      • Inkster09

You still think bionic is coming out?

I am going to wait until someone state side gets hands on review of the phone, no sense in throwing judgment one way or another. I am in no need of an lte phone at this point so depending how much shit Verizon preloads on the phone along with blur could be the deal breaker but like I said I am waiting for a real hands on review.

  • Doc

Just imagine if they gave it more than 512mb ram. That would keep it upgradeable for a while and it’d be even faster. Too bad. But I can live without 4G for now so I’ll probably still end up getting this as nothing else with a physical keyboard comes close. I just hope the data plans don’t kill my wallet.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=716789798 Lonnie Kerchief

512MB isn’t the problem. Motorola’s asinine memory allocation is.

      • Doc

        True dat!

  • http://www.matthewdlyons.com/ matthewdlyons

Kinda shiggity for Motorola to release the Droid X2 to so underperforms next to the Droid3. Further confirming, to me at least, that there was really no reason to make the leap from the Droid X to the Droid X2. You can’t future proof stuff like smartphones, but I’d be pissed if the Droid3 drops within a month of the DX2 and I’m clocking in at 1/2 of the benchmark speed.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=716789798 Lonnie Kerchief

As a DX2 user coming from the DX1, I can state that knowing what I know now, I’d never have even considered getting the DX2. I’m getting a D3 on release day to get off the DX2, so it looks like I’ll be a beta tester yet again lol.

    • Anonymous

Use a little common sense.  It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out the X2 is a nominal update versus the Droid 3.  You only have yourself to blame.

  • Silksmooth12

Then their phone “wants” never appear, and someone says “Hey, I haven’t heard from random Phoneosexual guy in quite a while, where did he go?” “Oh he was struck by a semi truck and then as he tried to crawl away from oncoming traffic, a shark appeared out of nowhere and slowly ate him alive while some motorist cheered the shark on and laughed” “Awesome!”

Something doesn’t seem… right here. I’ve had the Droid X2 for… exactly a month now, my friend got a Senstation yesterday, and I have lots of friends with galaxy S series.

Funk the pentile!  At least this has longevity in it with the dual core CPU.  Who knows how long those single core CPUs will last.  What are we gonna get three android updates tops with them?  2.3, Ice Cream, and Jolly Rancher Delight? Then it’s OH SORRY your single core CPU phone can’t handle Krispy Wafer.

I have a 6 y/o single core P4 PC as my home media server. It’s handling Windows 7 just fine and I’m not planning to retire it in a new future.
Why things should be different in mobile arena and devices be so short-lived?
I actually think that memory size is a lot more important than a CPU speed (and of course GPU speed).

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000106808261 Keith Sumner

I still have my single P4 as well as my main desktop computer/media server and it indeed still runs awesomely. It’s actually about 8 years old now.

I must agree with you in that the expected longevity of most mobile devices are very short lived. Such a shame, but that’s the consumer market for you, they want you to buy their products every couple years rather than building a product that will last forever. The power button on my Droid is broken and I take care of my stuff.

        • Calculatorwatch

The dual core CPU will hold it’s own for a while for sure, but do you really think it’ll keep up in two years with only 512 mb of RAM? That’s what worries me, I’ve seen how much the measly 256 on the original Droid has held it back. And sure 512 is twice as much but it’s also 2 years later and all of the tablets coming out are already sporting a full gb.

Most of that 1 gig of RAM is used by the displays. I haven’t found that a problem.  I’ve got the OG Droid and the only reason I plan on upgrading is the internal storage of 256.  I’ve had to delete apps I couldn’t move to the SD card just to keep enough free space available for updates to google apps and Flash.

Once I got LauncherPro it was like I had a brand new phone until I maxed out the internal storage.  Don’t confuse the two.  The Droid3 has 16 gigs.  It’s a powerhouse.

      • Mr.Joe

Hell it’s better then the Evo 4G and NEXUS 1!

Yeah the GPU in the first generation Snapdragon in the Evo and Nexus One was pretty weak.

someone should do the eris… :P is this app on the market? i could benchmark it on my oc’d eris…

        • Anonymous

You can download it from their website:
          http://www.glbenchmark.com/

Much better than that crap app, Quadrant. That thing has been spoofed for awhile, now. I just sideloaded GLBenchmark on my Streak 7 and found it’s surprisingly competitive (25.2/53.6 in the above tests), and I’m running stock ROM. I’ll have to load up the OC’d one and see how it does. I would love to see an OC’d Eris out there spanking the new guys!

The 3GS beat the iphone 4. that makes me question how accurately this test demonstrates speed

      • Anonymous

It’s actually fairly accurate. The 3GS has a much lower resolution than the 4, hence less pixels to push.

  • Samuelgalindo88

Want Bionic way more. Its shame Droid3 doesnt seem like it’ll boast 4G.

The Tegra thing started when you posted last week that it was a Tegra device. Plus this picture http://goo.gl/3KYBV helped that theory.

    • Anonymous

That image popped up at Engadget which prompted people to think it was a Tegra device. We’ve since removed that statement as the photo doesn’t appear to have come from either NVIDIA or Motorola.

      • http://AndroidTaskForce.com Chris Gustafson

Ah, doesn’t surprise me that Engadget is at fault. lol.

It’s a little disappointing that it doesn’t have a better GPU than the SGX 540. I mean, c’mon, that was in the original Galaxy S devices last year. Combine that with the PenTile matrix screen and no 4G and I’ll pass, thanks.

    • Anonymous

Pentile is the biggest let down for me.  Looking at the X2’s screen next to my TB’s, the bolt’s screen seemed sharper, especially for small text.  And forget it when comparing it to the ip4

    • Anonymous

The SGX540 is still the fastest GPU around except for the SGX543MP in the A5.  The OMAP4’s is also clocked faster and has more memory bandwidth than the one in the Hummingbird.  The dual A9s are significantly faster than the Hummingbird’s A8 as well.

I hate to say it, but I don’t trust any of the blogs with any of their release dates.  Seems like they’re just as bad as local weathermen.

    • Granted

Yeah it’s all a bunch of hype to get more readers, thus earning more ad revenue and fulfilling your contract by promoting new phones for various carriers and companies that pay you to advertise for them or give you free promotional goods to test and write biased reviews on.

  • The350zWolf

Any word on the bootloader??? locked, unlocked, unlockable???

    • Mr.Joe

      I’ve heard it’s unstable.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Forte/542650247 Michael Forte

Who cares? Unless you’re not renewing your contract to get this, enjoy getting raped by Verizon’s new tiered plans. Plus the 512mb of RAM and no LTE is a huge fail.

  • chaosrv

Please oh PLEASE let this hit before July 7th.  I’ve been sitting on an upgrade since January 1st.  I’d hate to walk away from Verizon because of the new data plans.

    • Mr.Joe

From what I’ve heard it will!

    • http://www.droid-life.com Gary

From what I’ve heard is that if you already on contract then you wont be affected, even if you are up for an upgrade. This is what a verizon worker told me like a month ago.
