Wednesday Poll: Picking up one of Verizon’s new phones – DROIDX2, Revolution or Xperia PLAY?

Next Thursday is shaping up to be a huge Android launch day for Verizon, with the DROIDX2, Xperia PLAY and possibly even the LG Revolution all becoming available.  One is dual-core, another is stock Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and the other is 4G LTE, but are any of them your next phone?  Can a qHD screen, gaming pad, or front-facing camera help you decide?  And not to hi-jack this poll before you’ve even hit the voting part, but can you imagine a phone that combined all of these things?

Any of these your next device?

    Retiring my Dinosaur…
I am ready to upgrade from my broken dumb phone (long overdue, I know…) to a smart phone and am tied to Verizon. Thus, am trying to choose from the best available options within the next few weeks and I need help.X2 sounds interesting, don’t know enough about the LG, and I’m not a gamer so Experian sounds silly to me. Incredible 2′s speakerphone wasn’t powerful enough in my in-store test. Charge was too clunky and the screen’s colors are too cartoonish (distorted still-life image’s color). So… if you were desperate to upgrade from a dinosaur to your first Android on Verizon within the next few weeks, what would you choose?

    • Edward M Yang

      Revolution or TBolt.

      • Rylee K

The Verizon store guys wouldn’t even sell me the TBolt cause of all the battery problems they’re seeing (and they may have said it overheats, too).
What about the Revolution do you find awesome and worthwhile?

No Issues with Speakerphone on my Incredible 2, love it

        • Emily

Don’t get a Revolution, you don’t want that Bing trash. And unlike half the people on here, I’m not going to suggest that you root it just so you can get rid of it.

If you have 4G towers in your area get a TB or Charge. The data speeds are faster than most cable and dsl providers basic coverage. If you don’t have one coming this year or in the foreseeable future, get a DInc2. Trust me you don’t want your Android all Blurry.

  • Interstellarmind

can this seriously be given to verizon/ moto?! considering this community is the one that revived motorola, perhaps they should listen to our polls?!

  • Themrjustinjones

DDo you know how mad your going to be when you buy a x2, and then two weeks later you see a phone that has twice the power. Life Fail. It’s ok. Personally I won’t upgrade the 1.43GHz droid 2 until there is the solar panel back. I would downgrade to a droid 1 if it had a universal remote built in.

  • Anonymous

How about rolling all those features into one phone.

  • Erie215

Im quite happy with my Dell Streak 5 :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=758620228 Aaron Rietschlin

The Sony Xperia PLAY is enticing. Stock Gingerbread AND an unlockabled bootloader (http://unlockbootloader.sonyericsson.com/which-phones). The internals aren’t much, but I am definitely considering it.

  • Anonymous

Considering I can’t upgrade until Feb 2012, I have no choice but to wait for something better.

  • dincit2er

    incredible 2

  • Anonymous

went with the Dinc2…no 4g or dual core, but really nice phone. I’ll enjoy it until something comes out that strikes my interest. with Verizon that could be quite some time!!!

    • Emily

I’m thinking of dropping the money on the Dinc3 out of contract. It’s pretty cheap at $440. I’m completely sick of this D2 trash VZW replaced my broken Droid with. And save my upgrade for a LTE phone with NFC later on, because that’s going to cost in the $600 range OoC. None of the phones out or coming out is worth a 2 year commitment.

      • Anonymous

Yeah that’s the way i went. Dinc2 is a really nice phone.i don’t care that it doesn’t have 4g, yet! Maybe a year from now when the network is a bit more stable as well as the phones that run on them I’ll use the upgrade. For now though I’m really happy and while everyone continues to wait I’m enjoying a great phone that didn’t break the bank!

  • Jesse Stevens II

    Droid 3 FTW!!!!

  • Fattie McDoogles

Since everyone has decided that we are just gonna make wish lists… I want an quad core phone running stock Ice cream sandwich, gets 24 hours of heavy use outta the battery, has a front facing 5MP cam SKYPE with video chat, and is LTE.

  • DoD

I just want Google Voice for my xoom.

  • Anonymous

And they really have no new design on the X2???

Don’t get me wrong, I love the design, but they should at least change it up a bit.

    • Fattie McDoogles

No they gave it to the Targa/Bionic/Unicorn phone thats coming this summer

      • Emily

        Droid does Princess.
        Droid does Sparkles.
        Droid does Magical.
The Droid Unicorn from Verizon Wireless. (It’s superfantasmagoric.)

        That’s the phone I want!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

The specs on the Droid X are nice, but modifications to its form factor would have been nice.

The Thunderbolt is too fat and its battery issues keep me at bay.

The Xperia play looks fat and ugly.

The Charge is a Fascinate with 4G and costs $300.

The Incredible 2 is a single core device and its screen can’t be seen in daylight…Seems like every single device has some glaring omission.  I’m waiting on either the Bionic or Samsung Galaxy S2 to replace my rooted Fascinate.

Hopefully Verizon won’t seem fit to charge $300 for the privilege of using their wondrous LTE…

I’m really, really, beginning to get irked by this company.  First time in a long time I’m considering switching providers.

    • Gg101

I feel the same way.  All the beast phones are being announced on other carriers.  I think the manufacturers may be having issues getting the LTE radio to play nice with some of the newer hardware, so we are getting this disappointing LTE lineup.  My contract is up in July and I think I will be moving to a carrier with better hardware.

    • Emily

I’d pay a $100 premium for an LTE device if it meant they’d never raise 4G data like Sprint did.

    • http://twitter.com/BHagey1 Brandon Hagey

Honestly, i think a 4.5-5″ screen would of been fine with the thunderbolt. Shit wouldof been sick.

  • Anonymous

My Droid X is fine for now.

    3G is fast enough.
    One processor is fast enough.

Until something REALLY good comes out, I will wait patiently

  • http://twitter.com/Chasemanhattan3 Chase Chick

Droid 3 IF unlocked bootloader.  Otherwise hoping a Nexus lands on Verizon…

  • Carmen Diva

Own a Droid Charge….soon gonna own a xperia play

  • FortitudineVincimus

I think that Function looks pretty nice

  • sri

Picking up a phone on verizon without the LTE & dual-core is not a good thought. Remeber you have to stay on with it for next two years.

    • Anonymous

You can buy the incredible 2 for a little over $400 retail, not bad really when you figure you can sell it for at least $200 months down the road and save your upgrade. Honestly though, i like it so much i could care less about dual core or 4g.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=716789798 Lonnie Kerchief

Droid 3 with LTE would be my ideal next phone choice. Leaving out LTE on the D3 would be pretty epic in the failbook.

    • Anonymous

and an encrypted bootloader would not be an epic fail?  You must love Blur

    • Fattie McDoogles

pretty sure its not gonna be LTE just like the X isnt LTE but itll be dual core

  • PRALINES

my goal in life is to buy a Droid 3.

    • Atlbaird

Agreed sir in the last month iv had a droid charge and incredible2 and don’t like either of them all that much but I am getting a nerd boner over the d3 ….. but a Verizon nexus s would make me jizz my pants big time …… but that is wishful thinking

  • Anonymous

Of that day’s phones, Revolution.  That is the day my last NE2 comes up, too.

Not entirely sure yet if I’ll get a Revo or a TBolt, though.

  • Emily

Thunderbolt is never getting Sense 3.0, Charge isn’t running GB or SGS2 hardware. Revolution has Bing… DX2 is what the DX should have been. Xperial Play only 512 RAM, 400 MB on board for apps… Pass. Pass. Pass. Pass. Pass!

    • Anonymous

Sense sucks.  What the Thunderbolt will be getting is AOSP Gingerbread.  Not much longer

      • Emily

Q: I just took my Thunderbolt off the charger how long will it last?
        Q: “Not much longer”

        • Emily

           Fail!…. I meant A: “Not much longer”

          • Smitty24

             Dear Emily,

Shove a tampon in it and shut up. Trolling hard core over there.

          • Emily

            Oh that’s all?
So all VZW reps have to do is say to customers, “Don’t worry all you have to do is root your phone and install a custom ROM then you’re phone will be like it’s suppose to be. Just don’t let us know because it’ll void your warranty.”

          • http://twitter.com/BHagey1 Brandon Hagey

Get an iphone then. Verzion is going to continue to put bloatware on there phones, if you dont root and remove. (Also add a custom WELL DONE KERNAL unlike the stock kernal. Your batter will increase.)

    • Mr.Joe

SHIT!  I forgot the Play only had 400MB of on board storage.  What a MISTAKE.

OH and how the hell is the X2 what the X should have been?  A year ago there were no dual core Tegra 2s or qHD screens.

      • Emily

No front facing camera, still only 512 mb ram. Same exact body design minus the camera button. Android 2.2. No LTE.

It’s basically what the Droid R2D2 was to the D2 minus the Star Wars.

The gingerbread on the X is ready and in the wild, but they’re holding off the OTA because the X2 is launching with Froyo. what a joke.

  • rikster

my droid inc still is faithful and anyways i’m holding hope verizon gets a stock out the box nexus phone!!!!!

    • LionStone

Yea I’m thinking of going back to my Dinc too, until they figure out my gps problem on T-Bolt. My Incredible is fast and reliable…just like any smartphone is supposed to be.

  • http://twitter.com/jdrch Judah Richardson

Waiting for an LTE Droid 3. Yeah, DL thinks it won’t be LTE, but that’s literally the only phone I’d consider a worthy replacement for my Droid 1.

  • Radgatt

All of these phones have something that I want. The dx2 has dual core, the xperia play has stock Android, and the revolution has 4g…I need a phone with all of that and the front facing camera then I’m on board…not sure which one of these I would choose. I am getting impatient when it comes to the bionic. Not sure how much longer I can hold out.

  • Thomas L

I am really holding out for a atrix style smart phone.  Hopefully manufacturers and providers are looking at that as the next need.  I would love to rid my house of pc’s and be able to dock the smartphone and be able to accomplish the same thing.

Meh, I have the thunderbolt… got it the 2nd day it was out. But at this point, my next phone upgrade will have NFC by then especially since Google is trying to make a push for NFC. dont know why these smartphone manufacturers arent including it. would be better to integrate it, and not use it than to just leave it out altogether. the sooner these manufacturers can start putting in NFC chips in the smartphones, the sooner the merchants can start integrating it into the stores. win/win for everyone.

    • Sean27030

If they gave you everything at once then they wouldn’t have grounds to sell you the next big upgrade in six months… phones have the shortest lived life expectancy of any of the devices in our digital age… if they actually build a phone that’d give you all the features that are available it’d have to last 3-5 yrs…. phone sales would drop prices would drop to push the market profits would be down… the push with this corridor of the techonological community is hinged on the gotta have latest and greatest impulse buys…marketing is the driving force.. and yes it’s lead to inovation but ,IMO, at the cost of truely competitive and valuable devices. We’re all victims of our own impulse to jump on the band wagon…

Stock Android across the board.. and actually start compeiting on the merrits of your device specs/inovation and longevity/duribility… THEN you’ll truely have a worth while market that’ll benifet consumers, providers and manufacturers….

I really want Verizon to get the HTC Sensation or equivalent: Dual 1.2GHz CPU, 1.3MP Front-camera, 1080p capture, Gingerbread, Sense 3.0, 4g, etc., etc. etc.. I currently have the Droid Incredible, and it is starting to feel slow, but I don’t think getting the Inc2, Thunderbolt, or DroidX2 will yield much better results (Maybe the X2, but no front cam and no 4g?)

  • Anonymous

Was kinda hoping to wait til something better, but the Droid took a dive into the toilet, so I had to upgrade.

Thunderbolt for me, and I can’t say that I’m not happy with it. It’s awesome thus far. I can’t imagine anyone thinking this phone really needs a dual core.

  • http://profiles.google.com/amtrombley89 amtrombley89

Already bought the DInc 2, and Loving it :)

  • Rain_king46

The LG is the best of this bunch but I will not upgrade from my DX until we see what we deserve which is a dual core, LTE, forward facing cam phone running at least Gingerbread with at LEAST as much memory as the DX had out of the box. Preferably with an unlocked bootloader and stock Android but I will hold my breath for the last two. All of these things are available,  which of you manufacturers is going to give it to us first?  Oh, and the fingerprint scanner on the Atrix is pretty cool too if ya wanna toss that in as well.

    • Emily

Bing gives the LG minus 200 DKP so that bombshell brings it to the bottom of the bunch.

  • Mikescalero

Too bad they didnt put a FFC and 4G LTE on the Droid X2, otherwise I would have been all over it

  • Meticode

Waiting for something better. I’m hoping there’s a pure Google experience device released on Verizon, but it looks less and less hopeful the longer we wait. Unless someone has comments on this.

    • http://twitter.com/standardsdt Dave Tarantula

Xperia Play is stock except it comes with those VZW Apps preloaded. Also it’s rumored that the Droid 3 will be Stock Android.

  • Jacob Bowen

OG Droid is running the same 2.2 as all the phones out right now…. Waiting for NFC, Front Facing Camera, up to date Android, and video chat that actually works with more than just the handful of people on the nexus S.
I find it amazing that developers can port the latest version of android to existing phones in their spare time, but a large company can’t get it figured out in 6 months.

    • Anonymous

It takes time to craft those wonderful skins…. and place all of that bloatware

    • http://www.getintonursing.com/ Jon

      I just don’t want to pay $50 / month for 4G. That’s a $20 increase over unlimited 3G and you only get 5 Gigs I think.

How easy it will be to exceed 5G with such a fast connection. I on occasion already reach 5 gigs on some months with 3G. I do 3.5 Gigs minimum every month.

      • Fakerjs

You are clearly miss informed. With VZW in no case is 4G currently $20 more than 3G. That said, the $49.99 data only plan (available off contract) is limited to 5GB, likely to reduce the chances of consumers using their 4G cards in MBB devices to obtain unlimited data. Currently, all 4G data plans with voice service are unlimited. In fact, VZW is providing free unlimited mobile hotspot on 4G devices for a limited (but recently extended) time. Also, VZW has commented to having their entire current 3G network running 4G by the end of 2012. Recently VZW executives have said they will be moving to tiered data pricing, so I recommend you educate yourself and get it while the getting is good.

Menu, Home, Back… where’s the Search?  PASS!

      • Mr.Joe

        People actually use that key?

        • Calvin Williams

I use it ocassionally when I’m searching for a song or want to open the search bar in the browser cause it’s a little faster, but most of the time it’s useless

        • http://www.facebook.com/samcobra Samudra Sanyal

Long press for voice actions. I use it all the time.

        • Emily

I use it when I want to search for information on something. Have a question and use google to find an answer. Quickly find a contact that I haven’t called or texted recently or at all. find the definition for a word. Voice actions. Search for a song in my 2500 songs on my SD card.

Basically anytime I need to search for something I use the button. I probably hit it more than my home key. If it’s not there, then I’d need that ugly widget on my home screen. And unless I want to put it on all 7 of my homescreens I’d have to navigate to the one i put it on.

      • http://twitter.com/SoDroid SoDroid (Eli)

There is a way to search using the persistent buttons on the bottom, I saw it on video. I think you hold the home button or double tap it. I was concerned with this as well because I use my search button everyday but the SGS2 does have a solution.

      • ha

HAHA. No search button, more like a phone that is completely useless because of that. Why even bother making it if it doesn’t have something that simplistic. Who knows what else Samsung messed up.

      • Calvin Williams

I don’t know why people support Motorola so much. Blur can smd and the locked bootloaders in the past have been a pain in the balls. The Bionic shown at MWC and CES were shitty. The SAMOLED+ screen is wayyy better than having a slightly faster gpu/cpu (that’s if it even will be faster) and shitty blur. TouchWiz 4.0 is pretty amazing.

        • http://profiles.google.com/statsprofessor Jakub Palka

TouchWiz is crap too. Might as well get an iphone but then again that’s what SG2 is anyway, a plastic iphone which overheats, has weak wifi, drains battery hard, can’t play most apps/games, gets blown hard by fanboys but then gets beats in at least half the benchmarks by older dual cores.

By the time it even comes to Verizon, you might as well get nexus 3/tegra 3.

          • Calvin Williams

You’re an idiot. Don’t confuse the failures in the original Galaxy S phones with the new. Sammy came back with a bang and is making the best devices. Did you forget the Nexus S is made by Sammy? And TouchWiz 4.0 is as good as HTC Sense so it’s not like there is anything better besides AWD Launcher.

        • Pennywise

OLED looks unreal. In a very bad way. Color reproduction and contrast are unnatural.  The organic light emitting diodes perform poorly in sunlight. Fight OLED my brethren; Fight technologies that are engineered to die rapidly with the (arguably unethical) intention for consumers to have to replace it.

A current-gen LCD with equal size/resolution is wayyy better than OLED, never-mind the rest of the guts being better/faster (CPU/GPU).
