FlexT9 Keyboard is FREE Today From Amazon, You Better Get This One

FlexT9 on Android is free today (normally $4.99) from the Amazon Appstore and we’re definitely recommending that you go grab it.  While it make look a little i*hone-ish, it might be one of the best keyboards you’ll ever use.  Not only is it easy to type on, it also allows you to swipe words, use voice-to-text, and even write out words free-hand.  And not to hate on Swype, but this keyboards seems to have a couple of swiping bonuses over it.

Cheers Tim and all of you on Twitter!

Why does this thing need internet access? Dictionary updates should be part of the app update. With all the bad apps coming out lately (both malicious and ones with security flaws), permissions should be kept to a minimum. Internet access combined with contact data access doesn’t seem like a good combination to me either. I don’t want another Skype privacy issue.

Ya, I generally stay away from these 3rd party keyboards since almost all of them require internet access. Developers can say whatever they want about how they use the internet permission and what’s logged but if there’s a security flaw (like the Skype app you mentioned) then all bets are off.

Too bad users have to worry about app permissions now with Google not really doing much monitoring of the Market and Amazon’s Appstore is still too new to say if their monitoring is any better.

      Speech input uses internet access.

Downloaded this on my Xoom and works pretty good.  Couple of quirky things that they do differently than Swype, but since I can’t get Swype on my Xoom yet, this is a great alternative.  Keeping Swype on my OG Droid though.

  • mike

Its cool and all until it romped my apps with forcecloses and a laggy frozen interface. droid incredible does not like this keyboard.

  • Granted

Yeah this is by the amazing company that made ShapeWriter, which was bought out and stupidly taken off the market, and I’ve had this awesome keyboard since it came out. I can never go back to using a normal non-slide keyboard, and when I’m not using ShapeWriter, I switch over to this.

And I do hate on Swype because this and ShapeWriter are light years above it, in so many ways. And I highly suggest getting this while it’s free because it is the best slide keyboard currently on the Market. Plus the updates recently have made the flow if this app really come together. And nothing beats the voice to text feature. It rarely makes mistakes, well assuming you can speak your native language properly, it doesn’t account for retards that speak in ebonics or slang.

    • digsoreos

With Swype, when you slide your finger to “type” a word and then lift off, it is smart enough to know you are done with that word and want to continue entering a new word, so it adds a space. The swype feature of FlexT9 doesn’t do that. It thinks you want the second word to be part of the first word you typed.

Plus, I was hoping that the T9 part of the app’s name was going to include a compact querty T9 keyboard alternative, similar to the SureType layout on the BlackBerry Storm. Unfortunately, it does not.

I’ll stick to Swype and SwiftKey, but will keep an eye on FlexT9 for any future improvements..

Looks very promising. I only wish Amazon Appstore is available in more countries ;(

Works great on Dinc2, like it better than swype and way better than the HTC keyboard!

  • shamrockx

tried this on my x running gingerbread made my phone lock up and lag badly uninstalled and my phone is back to fast guess this app and gingerbread dont mix well to bad seemed nice,,

    • Granted

Yeah I think they have an update coming out for Gingerbread soon.

why does it put in the space automatically after each word like other keyboard apps? otherwise i like it

    • Andy

      I mean why *doesn’t it…

      • digsoreos

Yeah, it doesn’t do that so that’s a fail right there. But it should be easy enough for them to fix. Swype automatically enters a space after you’re done sliding your finger along to make a word.

        • Anonymous

It does for me on my Xoom…It doesn’t move the cursor over until you type the next word, but it’s just like Swype.  Just type the 1st word and go straight to the next word and it automatically inserts a space.

  • HerroMoto

Yeah I’m pretty sure it’s having problems with Gingerbread 2.3.3. I’m having problems on my D2 running Apex 2.0 beta. Keeps freezing and locking up, but I really liked the little time I had with it.

Im using CM7 on Thunderbolt, which is GB 2.3.3, and it works fine. Maybe it has a problem with blur?

      • Hypcrsy

        I have a problem with blur :)

        • STiK

           New Blur FTW!!

  • skeezicks

Wow. The transition from Swype is smooth as can be. There’s no learning curve, whatsoever.  I’ve been a devotee of Swype ever since it arrived, but this might very well win my allegiance.  Yeah, installing Swype can be a major hassle (mainly due to problems with their install program). By the way, to save y’all a little time: you can get to the help/setup screen by pressing the 123 key for a second or two.

  • Anonymous

Installed this on my NookColor. Seems to work fine, unlike Swype which I never could get to work properly. Just beware that the app uses 6MB of memory (twice as much as SwiftKey) and could be a problem on underpowered phones.

  • Snowdajake

Like the keyboard, but made my droid x freeze up.

  • Anonymous

I stopped using Swype because of the ridiculously stupid ass dictionary. Did you really think I mean to type “HLA” instead of “HI”? Really stupid stuff like that is why I absolutely hate Swype. Glad I got on DL today so I can check this out.

  • http://twitter.com/dawitLol Dawit

This app is great but for some reason watchdog tells me FlexT9 is using around 50% of my cpu whenever I try to text.. hmm

Saw this at 1am this morning(forgot to send it as News Tip damnit! lol) and downloaded it immediately. It really is an incredible piece of…keyboard? Couldn’t think of anything else..but yes, download it and be amazed! YEAH!

    Works great

Must be a gb DROID x problem…completely locked up my phone twice resulting in a battery pulleach

    • Anonymous

I have no problems with it locking IP on my Droid X. I do however get some lag… especially in landscape.

  • Guest

Thanks. This works better on the T-Bolt than Swype.  For some reason, Swype does not included spaces on the stock message application.  .  For some reason, Swype does not included spaces on the stock message application.

    Shapewriter is still the best.

    • http://twitter.com/Bobby_Phoenix Bobby Phoenix

What kind of troll comment is that?  So to expand on your post.  You said: “I have tried Swype, Gingerbread Keyboard, Swiftkey, FlexT9, and all the other ones out there, but I find Shapewriter to be the best because it offers me more options for my needs, and fits my style better.”  Oh, OK, I see why you said that.  TROLL

      • Granted

Or maybe he’s entitled to his non-verbose opinion. Especially considering it has merit and is made by the same company, so in a way he is congratulating it at the same time. I’d much rather see what you call a “troll”, as opposed to someone that criticized a pretty benign comment, basically looking for an argument to fill their deprecating needs.

        Your a jackass!

    • Granted

Amen! But considering this is also a Nuance Communications keyboard, I rate it as the number 2 best slide keyboard, but it’s really almost a tie between the two.

  • GJB

Wow, just wow.  This is an incredible keyboard.  It does everything, and does it just as well or better than the competitors.  I use to swear by swype, but still had my gripes with it.  Most especially, it would lag from time to time (I’m running an overclocked OG Droid), and based on my first few uses, this keyboard does not lag at all, is more accurate, and has a much nicer method of selecting the word you actually wanted if you mis-swype or it confuses close words (this vs. thus for example).

  • Cgmartin33

Strange…I guess I’m the only one with problems. DX Gingerbread and this turned my beast into a snail! Even swipe pad started to glitch. Voice recognition was laggy and I missed the arrow keys and options from thumb keyboard. Uninstalled and back to normal. Maybe I will give it another shot with a reinstall and see if its any better….after all its free! I’ve used them all and I still like thumb keyboard the best. I came across it by accident looking for LPP themes ;)

    • 11knives

Same here DX gingerbread, I had some issues as well, but i rebooted and all seems fine for now. Hope it stays that way because I’m really loving this keyboard!

    • 11knives

Well, now I take that back. Had to uninstall because of serious issues with my launcher locking up. Once uninstalled everything started to work fine again. Damn shame cause I was really living this keyboard.

    • Anonymous

I’m wondering if this is more of a problem with blur than gb 2.3.3. There seems to be problems with the DX and D2, but no other phones.

    • Blitz

It’s looking like a blur issue- running 2.3.3 on D2 and is killing my phone, had to uninstall.

  • Greg

I wonder if someone can theme it.

  • http://perpetualn00b.tumblr.com quiklives

Full of awesomeness. As mentioned, I’m not crazy about the way it looks, but it’s totally worth it for the functionality and accuracy.

i used pretty much all keyboards out there, and this 1 is by far the best, thanks kellex.

a useful app of the day from amazon? whaaaaaaa????

  • Pacdzyne

I would love to try this out for free but it keeps telling me not avalible for download then wants a CC #. What am I doing wrong here?

    • Pacdzyne

Do I need to register a CC # just to allow free downloading of apps?

      • http://twitter.com/yohankenobi yohankenobi

Yea, but it never charges your card.

  • Ryan C

wow this truly is a complete keypad, more so over swype. only when you are doing the handwriting input it tends to capitalize every word and not put spaces between them. there is a space button tho. but little bugs like that are easily overlooked for the time being.

  • http://www.facebook.com/minh43 Minh Ly

The auto space after period doesn’t work and the vibrate on keypress is too long, but prediction is a lot better than Swiftkey.

  • Davros

Wasn’t a fan of swype. I was using custom htc keyboard then left it set to stock after GB upgrade. This keyboard seems to use the best of each to make a real nice functional keyboard.

  • Tdogandrus

Anyone else who has tried the swype method of adding a period to the end of a sentence get an annoying audio sound that doesn’t go away? I can duplicate it every time and the only way to get rid of it is to switch to a different keyboard. Weird

  • Cwpit81

This is great best keypad I ever used hands down ! Thx for the the hcomeads up. One major flaws I noticed correct me if I’m wrong but there is know way to close the keyboard manually?

    • Cwpit81

      No way*

    • Anonymous

the back button will close the keyboard. actually, u can use the back button to close any keyboard.

      • Cwpit81

        Thank you sir

  • thefar

wow! I wasn’t expecting it to beat swype by so much, awesome keyboard!

  • Anonymous

Installed it and I thinking about saying “adios” to Swype. This seems to have all the main features I wanted in a single keyboard.

  • Bigsike

All it does is force close launcher pro and handcent sms so not looking to good to me at all.

    • Jeres88

I use both Launcherpro and Hancent.  Hasn’t force closed either of them once for me.

      • Granted

Yeah same here, I haven’t had this problem and I’ve been running this keyboard since it launched. Maybe some other app you have is interfering with it in some way?

  • Anonymous

Holy crap. This is freaking awesome

  • Justin

Works like a dream on 3.1 Xoom (had issues with other keyboards)

    • Granted

That’s cool to hear, because I haven’t decided on a tablet yet, and I was anyways curious as to whether or not a slide keyboard would function properly on any tablet. Thanks :)

  • Anonymous

definitely the best keyboard out right now. never liked swiftkey, it was just annoying. i rather have word correction then word prediction. this is also more accurate than swype. not to mention a million times easier to install. that is swype’s biggest downfall.

    • http://www.kevinkuramura.com KevK

Every update for Swype beta on my Droid:
      -was absurdly complicated to install
      -didn’t work until I rebooted
-made the dictionary an order of magnitude worse

      the last update:
      -“your trial has expired”

been looking for a new keyboard ever since. This looks very promising.

      • Granted

It will not let you down, I cannot speak more highly of this keyboard. The only problem I have is, I’ve used slide keyboards for so long, that now I actually type too fast, and sometimes the program can’t keep up with how fast I’m going, and it gives me a lot of typos from the predicted text.

    • Raven

It is at least as good if not better than Swype, but like Swype, it does absolutely nothing when I switch to the hardware keyboard on my Droid2G, whereas the default Multi-touch keyboard provides spell checking and word suggestion for physical as well.  I sure wish I could select different input methods based on soft or physical keyboard.  I may have to look into the different keyboard for vertical or horizontal hack that I remember reading about some time ago.  Anybody else remember that?

      • Raven

Update! Found Keyboard Manager and am now happily using FlexT9 Keyboard in Portrait and Multi-touch Keyboard in Landscape.  Very happy with this little tool that should just be default in Android.

  • nathanp8

This is the best keyboard ever! I use it to swipe in portrait and multi-touch in landscape. It works great.

  • Mtooomaj

I need to know where to go to learn how to use this.  I downloaded it.  The keyboard works fine.  There seems to be a little lag using it with a rooted phone that bounces between 250 and 800 on the CPU – perhaps the phone has to wake up a bit before the keyboard is truly ready to use – Liquid GB 1.85 ROM.

But what I need is info on how to use the Swype like feature.  It is very easy to see how to turn the voice recognition on and off.  Not so with the skating across the keyboard feature.  I’m sure it’s simple but I don’t get it right now.

    • http://profiles.google.com/d.michaud333 Dakota Michaud

You use swype like you do the official swype keyboard just drag your finger to each letter in the word you want without lifting until the very end of the word.  I think this answers what you’re asking.

  • http://profiles.google.com/d.michaud333 Dakota Michaud

Great keyboard so far and amazon offers some pretty good apps.  Voice recognition is a little slow but i’ll keep testing it.

    • http://profiles.google.com/d.michaud333 Dakota Michaud

Scratch that voice recognition is really good, just slow when it needs to filter out background noise like music

  • Vrangel28

Tried to download it..its not free

    • Ozyman666

       It is through Amazon

    • Risenequinox

Better than Swiftkey? I’m about to find out. :)

      • http://profiles.google.com/d.michaud333 Dakota Michaud

20x better than swift key from my experience so far

  • Kierra

I need to further test it out but WIN

     Got it this morning!
