HTC Thunderbolt Easy Root Released

Couldn’t handle the manual root instructions for the HTC Thunderbolt?  XDA member dbzfanatic has you covered, although we’re not sure that’s a good thing.  Some times people need to learn to do things the hard way, but for those that don’t have time, here is your easyroot method.  (Windows-only)  I still highly recommend that you read through the full root instructions to get an idea as to what is really happening to your phone during this process.  And don’t forget, we posted up a video of the entire thing just yesterday.

*DISCLAIMER: Team AndIRC is not affiliated with this program and by using it you agree that neither AndIRC, dbzfanatic nor Droid Life is responsible for any damages caused by this program.

Download:  New Download at XDA Thread

I’m downloading the file now, have not used it or seen it in action yet, but it should work.  As we find out more about this tool, we’ll be sure to share.

Cheers Carlos and Matt!

    Really need help!

    heres what happened:

downloaded the rar, tried it and it wouldnt push so I deleted the ruu files in that package and downloaded the ones from the original droid-life manual root post and put them into the extracted folder I had made from the rar. The easy root steps all went through as it said they would and I have superuser and rommanager, but rommanager flashed clockwork once and the superuser permission popped up and i said yes, now rommanager says “an error occurred while attempting to run priviledged commands”. It will not boot into recovery even though rommanager said it flashed clockwork.

I tried wireless tether and it ask for superuser permission, i allowed it, and it does work! so i am rooted, sort of, but setcpu says it cannot obtain root so I am dumbfounded.

however, when I go to the hboot screen is says s-on so s-off didnt work.

My software version says 1.03.605.10 which I do not believe is the right version it should be running after the process.

My question is what does anyone think is going on or what happened and do you think I can try the updated version once its finished or will it not work on what my device is now running? Id appreciate any help I can get.

anyone here having issues with the mobile hotspot not working properly on the thunderbolt? it seems that every single time you connect to the mobile hotspot it drops 4G and drops your connection. super frustrating. just want to know if im alone???

Also now my phone thinks I’m somewhere in russia and dont know if I need to run the *228 again or not. Someone help PLEASE?

How funny that this site talks of easy rooting!!
How far from this is it? First question for all concerned…
Where do we download the Thunderbolt Root file to? Desktop? New Folder?
Okay once Rooter. exe is started and phone is plugged, wifi off and charge only ON hit step 1??
Okay several files download….pushes happen….then as everyone has noted “Choose the bootloader option and press POWER. Okay….no bootloader option appears in initial choices…do we press FASTBOOT? HBOOT USB?? or something else?? After pressing both above it seems the phone tried to flash but no upgrade was asked and nothing happened from there….there needs to be a better instruction given here then maybe it’s easy rooting…HELP!!
Let the ROM flash. When asked to upgrade, choose yes (Press VOLUME UP). This will take a while and your device may reboot, allow it to happen. You will be presented with a screen saying you device is updating.

After flashing is complete press POWER to reboot into android.

  • Olaf455

We could really use a step by step guide to using this easy method. I am a bit hesitant to use even the easy method without good instructions. It could end up a very costly “OOPS”…

  • Dshudson

I downloaded this, it runs with the phone plugged in or not and does the same thing… “nothing”

Then there is the chance i have no idea what I’m doing also.

Plug in your phone, place it in charge-only mode and please ensure that wifi is OFF before starting.
    Reading devices…
    * daemon not running. starting it now *
    * daemon started successfully *
    List of devices attached
    Then,,,
Choose the bootloader option and press POWER. Let the ROM flash. When asked to upgrade, choose yes (Press VOLUME UP). This will take a while and your device may reboot, allow it to happen. You will be presented with a screen saying you device is updating.
After flashing is complete press POWER to reboot into android.

After rebooting skip the google setup and turn USB Debugging back on, flashing will turn it off. Then you must unplug your phone and plug it in again.

    • Dshudson

      then step 3
Unplug your phone, skip the google setup, plug your phone in again, and ensure USB Debugging is turned on in settings again before proceeding. You have 20 seconds to do this.

      • Anonymous

yeh ive seen/encountered all of this as well, but my phone wasn’t actually doing what it was mentioning here. Like, for example, Choose the bootloader option and press power – this suggests to me that by this step, my phone would have automatically powered down and then I “choose the bootloader option etc…”
I will admit I know nothing about adb except for using on the ApeX toolbox, I think (droid X).
Was I supposed to have opened adb? When I click on it, it pops up and disappears real quick.

        • Dshudson

          I agree, it does nothing.

          • Anonymous

Not insisting anyone is obligated to help us. But it’s strange that even those that have “pulled it off” are not saying anything.

        • http://twitter.com/robitj11 Thomas Robinson

So glad I am not the only one, unfortunately all i got was all of my programs erased….. re-downloading them now…

    • Wantedtoroot

yup, this thing is pretty much worthless. This really sucks, I wasted a TON of time downloading it on the super slow megaupload and was really excited to root my phone.

  • Raptor007

I am waiting on UnRevoked to become available for the 1-click method, nothing against one dev or another I just know it worked for me in the past. Has anyone tried this yet, and any feed back?

  • Dshudson

    does this have an unroot?

  • gabe

so i was able to download the entire thing…all i am waiting for is for someone else to let me know that it worked anyone?

  • Twist

Using this method, is it easy to unroot?

  • Anonymous

Has anybody used this and can confirm that it works? I’ve been trying to download this for the last 3 hours, on premium mega-upload, on a cable connection, and it continues to fail in the middle of the download. I’m up to 125 mb’s… in 3 hours. Yuck.

I’m assuming there is an apk that we extract out of this huge file. So I hope I can transfer the app using dropbox. If I’m way off base with this please let me know.

    • Anonymous

This is completely done via your PC (windows only). This is not done via the phone itself.

      • Anonymous

I haven’t been able to download this yet, but I assume it is applied differently then the original method. Are there any instructions for this method? I don’t want to assume it will be self-explanatory once I open the file.

  • big125

This only works with with firmware versions lower than 1.12.605.9. which is lower than mine so hopefully they make a new one with updated firmware versions.

    • CJ

where does it say that it doesn’t support higher than 1.12.605.9?

      • Dshudson

        i have 1.12.605.6 nice..

  • Pena Rueben

How do I push this to adb after extracting thru winrar?

  • Nakhleh926

I’m unfortunately downloading this from my phone, do you think you’d be kind enough to give me an MD5sum to make sure I actually get the file the way it’s intended to be gotten?

  • Anonymous

A mirror would be great… I keep trying to download this file but it just freezes around 8mb’s.

  • Sfchawks01

So once you downloadit …what do you do next?

    • bad4u6669

set your phone down and back away slowly. head to verizon store, buy iphone… lol

      • Fd2blk78

        Way to help out…haha

        • gabe

im guessing you click on rooter.exe

          • Anonymous

Opened 7zip, extracted this download as a whole to a file I created to my desktop called “thunderbolt”.
Connected phone to usb, started “Rooter” application on my computer.
It said “make sure wifi is turned off etc…” Then I clicked “Step 1″ button, then is said something about “damean”
Then it said something such as “listing devices” or something like that. (cant remember lol)
Now I’m on a screen that says “Choose the bootloader option and press POWER. Let the ROM flash. When asked to upgrade etc….. (and there’s more, but I won’t go on)
anyone want to lend a hand?

          • Maxxmentum

I get up to the “listing devices” but I never see the “bootloader” option appear. Am I supposed to reboot the device aka Power button and hold the Volume rocker? I rooted my Droid 1 all the time but the HTC seems to be throwing me. Could someone post screen shots so I know what to look for? Thanks

        • bad4u6669

I prefer them after a nice long hard work out.

  • FortitudineVincimus

easy root 1 click type root methods should be the norm. “Some times people need to learn to do things the hard way” – bah.. most people don’t want to and you shouldn’t have to. it makes no sense, just to say you did it the long old school way, to do it some old archaic 20 step method that requires you turn your computer into a dev tool.

1 click roots should be the way and no one should feel bad about using them. hell, you dont write your own apps you use daily and you use apps others make to make rooting even useful – setcpu, rommanager, TitBU, ROMs – so no reason not to use a 1 click speedy fast root method if some dev can make it work.

this release, as I said days ago, was just a matter of time.

    • MIDNIGHTxDESTRUCTION

you hit the nail on the head

      • Dshudson

There is not too many things I can’t do myself and for that matter, I’d rather do them myself.. But some things.. like this root, I will leave to the experts. I can tell you how to remove a Oligodendrogliomas tumor in the brain.. but do you really want to try and remove it? No, it’s not brain surgery, but really I don’t want to waste my time learning this.. I’ll donate to someone interested in creating it easier for the rest of us..

    • Bacabone

Knowing how to manually do it is too handy. Has saved my ass too many times. These one clicks are nice but keep in mind u r hacking your phone, a basic understanding of what u r doing is always a plus

    • TheRealBeesley

You are exactly the kind of person who will post on a forum when u delete something u shouldnt and dont know how to use ADB to fix it. 1 click roots should only be used after you know what you are doing, period. ADB can get you out of a jam/brick, 1 clicks CANT.

      This is non-debatable.

      • Pbaxter

Point taken. But how should a newbie learn adb?

      • Pbaxter

Point taken. But how should a newbie learn adb?

      • Daviswa10

How long does it take for step 1 to load from the easy rooter or do you click step 2?

    • Jane0

I learned a lot about what was going on in Android by my first rooting with a linux install yada yada.  Glad I did it- taught me vocab and the basic interaction with the phone.  It also took a lot of time and since I am only rooting one phone per 9 months or so, I simply cannot remember all of the steps.  Now I am glad to be able to avoid it and am grateful for the devs who put this stuff together..

Takes a loooong time to download.

Me too. LOL. I assume we are “maxing” it out.

    • bigdon76

it downloaded.do i push on adb?

  • Dbzster

I think this would be the perfect device for people to start learning, because sooner or later HTC’s lockdown will get stricter and single click solutions will get further and further away from using adb and the necessary files.

    • Azbryan

Do you know where there’s a decent tutorial or some way TO learn?!?! I’ve been on the android dev site and its about as clear as the rooting instructions. Seems like you have to already know what to do to use it.

the only way to stop being a noob is to take the plunge!!! Its so self satisfying to stop being a noob!! lol choose manual root! MANUAL ROOT!!!!!!!!

    • TheManWithOutRoot:(

I want to say that your absolutely right, manual root teachers you some good things. but then there are people like me, who are out for a week right now and doesnt have a windows computer at his disposal. of course i will have to wait, but im just saying if i had the opportunity to use a one click root on my phone obviously i would. then again if you have the opportunity, i would manually root. thats actually where i started last year before i joined a team on droid forums and became a dev. so yes starting small like learning to root can really lead places.

Not on 3g. Only 4g but still no root needed.

the device has 2 modems a 1x CDMA and an EVDO/LTE dual chip.. thus, 3g or 4g works while on voice on the other chip.

Root has nothing to do with pirated apps.

Comments like this give us all a bad name. I rooted my OG Droid through ADB, RSD, easyroot, and z4. yes its nice to understand the step by steps, but really its this elitist logic that hurts android as a community.

        • HAHA

Yes but also spoon feeding leads to people not understanding what they are doing, causes them problems down the road, or leads to a bunch of noob questions.
