Chart: iPad 2 vs. Motorola XOOM vs. LG G-Slate vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

After comparing the original iPad to the Motorola XOOM a few weeks back, we took a lot of heat on how “unfair” it was to do that to a product that was almost a year old.  The Apple enthusiasts came in waves and the cries for “Just wait for the iPad2!” rang out through the night.  Well peeps, here is your comparison to the newly announced iPad 2…nothing groundbreaking at all here.  Straight from their spec sheets.

Cheaper price and a thinner body.  That’s it.

We’ve already seen dual-cameras, dual-core processors and HD recording.  What we aren’t seeing on this new product though, is 1080p on-device playback, Flash support (hah!), 4G capabilities, or expandable storage.  And what’s up with that giant bezel?

*Note* – HD playback on the XOOM is now questionable.  Motodev site lists it as “Max” 1080p, but the regular consumer XOOM page says just 720p.

Add me to the list of people waiting for the wifi only xoom at a decent price. ($500 is realistic). Although, I really like that new cover mechanism that the iPad2 is rocking. It looks like another company can duplicate it for other tablets. Although, I’m sure Apple has a patent on it.

It’s nothing new. The Blackberry has been able to go to sleep when you you put it in a holster with a magnet embedded. The technology is trivial unless one considers a magnet “magical”.

  • http://twitter.com/amd683 AMD Dude

if moto made xoom cheaper then nobody would buy ipad

  • Mike808

as an android fan, I really cannot justify the high price for the XOOM (the only quality android tablet available so far).
Google should just make their own tablet, price it in comparison with the iPad2, and let the folks choose.
All these manufacturers are killing the idea of owning an android tablet by jacking up the price.
I will go with the iPad2 since it’s quality, price and NEW! did I say reasonably priced?!
until everybody is in agreement that the android tablets are the way to go, they really should be affordable!
that’s how you build market share.
    Just my $0.02 :)

Cheaper price and thinner body? If you mean cheaper price on the OLD iPad and thinner body on the new one, i’m with ya…

    • http://perpetualn00b.tumblr.com quiklives

I think he means the i*ad 2 (32 GB/3G) is a bit cheaper and a bit thinner than the Xoom (though obviously lacking in other specs).

I have a XOOM. I have an iPad. Get an iPad 2.

    • Brian

The iPad2 does look nice Koush ;-)

    • anon-xoom-fan

I have a XOOM and an iPad, too. Can’t expense the iPad2 unfortunately.

Flash 10.2 is leaked for honeycomb, btw:

I want to get the iPad 2, but I won’t since I am content with my iPad. Yea, the XOOM didn’t own up to the hype in my opinion. Apple FTW!!!!!

    • Kylebeach1991

You don’t have a xoom. Because If you actually meant what you justsaod you would have returned the xoom by now. So stop lying.

Me on the other hand. I do have a xoom. And I do have an iPad. And I’m telling everyone. Skip iPad 2 and xoom. Wait for somethig better. If it’s about price get the iPad 1.

      • http://twitter.com/jbernard703 Jeff Bernard

LOL. Do you know that is Koush who makes money from all of the Android users through clockworkmod? he has a xoom so he can create a recovery for and get more people to pay for his apps which provides his income. why don’t you check the download totals for his paid apps and I think you will find he can afford a sub $1000 tablet.

  • Jer85008

An honest comparison must be made here, despite the lack of a few features that Apple will never include, the iPad 2 is a MUCH more marketable device than the Xoom. I spent some time at Best Buy switching between the iPad 1 and Xoom and came away fairly unimpressed with Honeycomb in general. The interface is slow and not nearly as responsive as iOS, and you just get the overall feeling that there isn’t much to do with the tablet. I hope this will change, but for now your average user has no incentive to pay $800 for one when you can have an iPad not only cheaper, but with many more accessories and apps.

    • B2R1982

I agree completely with this post.
      Like Jer said:
      1) The smooth feeling of the iPad over the Xoom is a major thing to me. Dual Core vs. the A4 and I still prefer the feeling.
      2) I do agree with the price-point argument. I’m very leery of all the talk of the features that “should” be coming with the Xoom, but will they? Time will tell. But at $800 I think you should get those out of the box, and you do with the iPad 2.

k well i am a fan of both apple and android tech devices, i have a droid x, macbook pro, and an ipod touch. let me just say….yes many apple customers have come to be idiots that just buy the products because they have seen and heard about the products, but its not apples fault they are popular and have made a name for themselves. their products are reliable, powerful and many times groundbreaking. but just because they are competition doesn’t mean you have to buy one or the other, and it definately doesn’t mean u have to stand up for one or the other(no one will ever be recognized simply because of funny statements they make about a competitior). simply state facts and leave it at that. but yes this is a droid site so everyone is gonna be appauled i said anything good about apple so go ahead, bring on the lolz

What is the point of a tablet in a world of laptops, smarhphones, and netbooks anyway.

    • HolyGrail

Tablet are instant on and ready to go. Great to have if you to stand in long lines. Most games/apps have a physic UI to them, that just whouln’t really work on a trackpad or mice. Tablets were never meant to replace laptops, or netbooks. They were meant to stand on their own.

  • Anonymous

    What happened to the comments???

  • joeD

What is the point of 1080p playback on the device if the device doesn’t have a 1080p display? Sadly, I think the iPad 2 won this round in terms of overall features and applications.

  • http://twitter.com/kirilv Kiril

can i just ask: why does the xoom have a barometer?

    • DroidzFX

So you can skydive with it!!

  • Paul

I really don’t get why 1080p on-device playback is a feature. None of the devices can display a 1080p picture, so what is the point? Hardware wise, I’m sure they can all decode a 1080p file and output it over hdmi to a connected screen. Past that, why does it matter when the screen resolution is sub-1080p anyway?

  • Stephen D

I still have hope for the LG or Samsung tablets. The iPad 2 doesn’t change anything, it isn’t magical, it’s the same old iPad with cameras, a dual core CPU, and a gyroscope. It’s more like iPad 1.5. The XOOM is awesome, but too expensive. If LG and/or Samsung price their tablets right, then they could sell like mad.

  • Anonymous

What sucks is that you can’t tether your droid to the LG…. Does it really only do 4G?

I really think that all motorola has to do is make cheaper version and BOOM! the ipad would’nt be competition seriously they could just start at the 500$ price range and it would make great sense

  • Techie

If the Motorola Xoom had SD card support RIGHT NOW, it would be a beast and completely dwarfed the iPad.

BUT because the Xoom is without SD support for the time being, that the Xoom is 32GB smaller than the top end iPad, it isn;t unbeatable and you would be sacrificing quality long term.

  • Derickmc

Android OS will always win over anything Apple until Steve Jobs decides to pull the stick out of his ass and take a chance at Open Source Development… I dont want to spend hundreds of $$ on a product that i cant have MY way. Its Steves Way or android.. and I choose Android every time.

  • http://twitter.com/SciJohn SciJohn

He who has the most gadgets does not necessarily win. That’s just bragging.

All I said was that the Xoom specs are better than the iPad 2. The iPad fans said wait until the iPad 2 came out, it will blow the Xoom out of the water. It didn’t. – enough said
Frankly, I expected someone to back-pedal. Thank you for not disappointing me. :)

We still don’t know the price of the wifi only xoom

  • Derickmc

lmao. I’m always amazed at all the apple fanboys that show up on here when there’s an i*hone vs. android comparison..

Hands down, the specs are 10x better on a Xooom. Yes, its more expesive, as should be expected.. yes i think $799 is a bit high, but with a much inferior tablet priced at just $70 less, why wouldnt you get the better one for a little more money.. It just makes sense… $799 is a bit much for the Xooom, but that just means $729 is OUTRAGIOUS for the ipad2…

    • Anonymous

How about a $499 iPad 2? Why would you get the $300 more expensive XOOM? A lot of people around here are acting like there is only one iPad 2 and it is $729 and it’s pretty ridiculous.

I don’t understand… Isn’t it just as bad to compare 1st Gen products to 2nd Gen???

  • Tojiro

Come on guys, if you’re going to do a chart like this please take a moment to make it accurate. Just a couple of problems I spotted right away: The iPad 2 DOES support HDMI out (via an adapter), and can play 1080p content to an external device. And what on earth do you mean by saying the Xoom can display 1080p content “on device?” The screen doesn’t have the resolution for it. It may stream out 1080p to an external device, but so does the iPad 2.

    Shoddy work, guys. Really…

    • derickmc

“via and adapeter” and “to an external device” … enough said.

      • Tojiro

*sigh* Why do I even bother?

As i pointed out in the VERY NEXT SENTENCE the Xoom is also only compatible of playing 1080p on an external device. Fact: You cannot play full 1080p content if you have less than 1080 vertical pixels. (that’s why it’s called 1080p!) The Xoom has 800, the iPad2 has 768. Neither of these numbers are greater than or equal to 1080, so therefore neither can play 1080p content “on device”.

    • Olgarcu7

Yea for an extra $39 you can do hdmi. As for the xoom its included.

      • Tojiro

Which should be highlighted by the chart! The point is that saying “Requires Adapter” for the iPad2 is honest and unbiased (and even makes the Xoom look good!)

Saying “No” for iPad2 HDMI support is misleading and dishonest.

  • Mattgroves67

HOLY S*$T!! Apple finally put out the rumored I*hone with a bigger screen still doesn’t make calls :p

I think we can all agree that the US price on the WiFi Zoom should be $499. Moto may still sell them at $599, but probably to the fandorids. Price parity with the iPad 2 is necessary. If they’re smart, they’ll eat the margin and sell the 32GB at $499 and have an advantage over the 16GB iPad 2 and some chance with the value shopper against the $399 iPad 1.

Moto, I hope you’re listening, we’d really like you to succeed with your tablet!

    • http://twitter.com/SciJohn SciJohn

You never know. Motorola may still lower their price.
Historically, Apple has only lowered their price on previous models when the new model is launched. (except for the time they reimbursed those early iPhone buyers)
I doubt Apple will lower their price to compete. They will sit on their same old more apps story and watch android steal the market like they have for smart phones.
I am counting on you Motorola!

      • Vitodintino

please look up apples market share vs. android, than come back and tell me they’ve “won” something.

  • Anonymous

To be fair, the iP2 does have a faster chip and better graphics, in addition to being thinner and lighter and having cameras. I’m still waiting for a Xoom, but I think we have to admit when the competition does some things right! The smart cover is pretty cool (I’d buy one for the Xoom if available), if pricey.

  • Petro Dragoumanos

Let me start with that brought an Ipad a month after it came out last year and I was not impressed with it. I ended up selling it on Craigslist two weeks later and managed to break even. I brought the Galaxy Tab the day it came out and was so disappointed that I returned it the next day. I brought the Xoom on Thursday and have been extremely happy with it. I should add though I managed to buy mine from Motorolla’s webpage with the 25% off code so it only cost me $600 instead of $800. While given a choice though between a $500 Ipad 2 and a $800 though, if I was to buy one it would be the Ipad 2 and not the Xoom. I really think Motorolla made a mistake pricing Xoom so high, hopefully other manufacturers will enter the market with products priced to compete against Apple products sooner than later.

  • CB

Hate to say, but the problem they have is Apple puts out a a cheap one…

Most of the owners of these tablets will see 499 vs 799..

  • Anonymous

    Which ones have GPS?

  • Nonnymoos

lol! You have flash but that should say “some day soon we hope”. 4G — some day soon we hope. Memory card slot – some day soon we hope it will work. Shipping tablet apps….16 vs. 65,000.

Also we know the battery life is 10hours (and that the iPad did far better than the 10 hours Apple spec’d).

And there is an HDMI port, though it’s extra, still brings the price in under that of the “shipped before it was really done” Xoom.

No mention of the 16 and 64gig models? No mention that there’s a $499 iPad 2 and nothing close to that price in an Android 3.0 slate?

    Somebody’s been drinking kool-aid.

It kills them to know that no matter how many charts they put together, no matter much much propaganda they have, no matter how many specs the Android tablets are better, the iPad will outsell all of the Android tablets combined. Why? Because it is simply better.

      • http://twitter.com/cwebb619 Chris Webber

I guess you buy in the “magic” aspect of it. So Apple treats their customers like children. “Our products are magic, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.”

I admit, it is a nice looking product and does beat the Xoom right now, but the community support of Android will blow the doors off the iPad2 and for those who want to most out of their technology, not just fairy dust (magic).

      Holy troll lol!

      • Nonnymoos

I guess calling me a troll is better than conceding that every point I said was true. Yes, I like Apple products. But I like all cool tech products. I have linux on my computer and love open source. I like windows too for that matter.

The Xoom all by itself is a pretty cool product. I’d sure like to have one. But in the comparison of the current state of Android in tablets, of which the Xoom is the banner product — Android is seriously coming up short when considering the experience in whole.

And now we add to the first ridiculous comparison between a non-shipping product compared to last year’s shipping model a new chart that again doesn’t get it’s facts right — and is followed by adoring Android drivel as if some how the Xoom is light years better than the iPad 2. It’s not even light years better than the iPad.

I look forward to the coming Android tablets, the coming of flash support, the coming of 4G, the coming of many great and wondereful “made for tablet apps”. But until they arrive, one aught to be able to acknowledge that Android at this point is still a good deal behind the iPad.

But hey — at least you guys are way ahead of WebOs and RIM.

        Lee

        • DroidzFX

The funny thing is the Xoom will get better with age. With developers introducing new features, overclocking, and Roms the xoom can stay relevant. ipad only gets older and less intriguing as time passes. Then apple has to release a new one with features that could have been in/added to the last. For example: that hdmi connector im sure could be integrated into the first version but you will never see that. He forces you to upgrade and thats fine if being bent over stuck in the rear is something your into.

        • DN

iPad has no mention of 4G, flash support, USB support, SD card support. The iPad is thinner, well done. What I want in a tablet is a true multitasking OS, and ability to take on vacation and upload pics from my camera without a computer. So, Apple, once again does not fill my needs. They come out with a superior first line product, then immediately get leapfrogged on the next iterations and they keep their customer loyalty with superior service. So, I will be excited for my Xoom to arrive, at 200 bucks off via the coupon deal- though I was originally going to wait to see if the iPad 2 had any advantage. Overall it does not. For the 200 bucks and knowing 4G, SD, USB host support, flash are around the corners, its not even close. I am glad I didn’t wait for today.

    • Bigsike

      Holy troll lol!

Apple barely changed anything.. they added a couple cameras and made it slimmer… The ipad2 wont even compete with the zoom, especually since for $70 more you can get a fully loaded Xooom with expandable storage, flash support, the fastest OS availible and expansion slots… you’d have to be an idiot not to get a Xoom.

    • Anonymous

Why do you leave out the fact that a dual-core cpu was added? And stop with this “for $70 more” stuff. You can get an iPad for $499.

Wondering how the Xoom can play video “1080p on device” with a screen resolution of 1280 x 800??
