Verizon’s Motorola XOOM Page Updated, February 24th is Launch Day (Updated)

Not that this should come as a surprise to anyone, but the Motorola XOOM will launch on Verizon, February 24.  The landing page at Big Red’s site has been updated as of a few minutes ago showing “AVAILABLE 2/24″, so we’ll probably wake up in our west coast beds to a shiny little press release.  Yah, Thursday!

Update:  And since I was half asleep at 1:30AM posting this, I completely missed the little note in the bottom right corner of the XOOM page which clearly says “Adobe Flash expected Spring 2011.”  So no “real” web experience at launch…great.  (Cheers Chris!)

Update:  I tweeted this pic last week which clearly states that Flash will not be available.  Sorry folks, you should have known this days before this if I was on top of my game.

Cheers Goran!

I was excited about getting the Xoom, now I think it is best to wait until summer …. somebody didn’t coordinate the product offerings and marketing very well …..

  • Magicjboy

    Pre-order canceled
I’m not buying a xoom until it has flash man.. its not worth it!

  • Motosux

The Xoom will make a good urinal cake

I woke up this morning to find out that my planned surprise trip to the Verizon store for recon was unnecessary, as my wife went down and added us to their preorder list while running errands first thing this morning. We are number 7 and 8 on their list. They will give me a call Wednesday night as a reminder. They also noticed that I am eligible for an upgrade on my old Droid and want to try to talk me into a new phone.

  • Alvinm 77

Was gonna get the Xoom until I saw the video for the HTC Flyer. Xoom is a wonderful device but the Flyer seems a little more productive and is what I need as a college student so I want have to carry around my 18.4″ Sony Vaio laptop for note taking. I like it just a little more

  • Mr. Joe

Something tells me FLASH isn’t 3.0 compatible yet. But it seems weird as they where showing it off at places…

Again I don’t know why they didn’t wait till spring to launch this. Have it be a LTE/Flash machine right out of the box. I find it REALLY dumb that you have to send this in to get a LTE upgrade.

  • http://ian.cazabat.com IanCaz

Okay, after that last update, I looked at the pic from your tweet.

On the left side, does it REALLY say “Future support for microSD cards up to 32GB (not available at launch…)”?

    Gah…

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=735376886 Vicky Kolakowski

If I recall correctly, there was an SD card support issue with Honeycomb but the hardware is built for the card.

MOTOROLA XOOM = OVERPRICED IPAD with a camera.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dan-Carter/500179789 Dan Carter

I don’t understand why this isn’t shipping with Flash 10.1. Maybe this is an error, and the ad is saying 10.2 is available in the Spring? I mean, what’s stopping me from downloading 10.1 in the market? Is Honeycomb incompatible with 10.1?

    • Joe

Well that seems to be the only plausible explanation, that in fact Honeycomb is incompatible with 10.1. No other way of explaining this.

  • Sixvoltsystem

Oh jeez people relax. I’m sure you’ll be able to install Adobe flash on it, you just wont have the tegra 2 optimized flash for it. I have the regular flash running on my tablet and it has a tegra 2 even though they said it wouldn’t work. It’s not like its going to light on fire. If not visit XDA, I’m sure something will be available.

    • Sixvoltsystem

Plus most devices that are portable wont work with hulu anyway unless you modify libflashplayer.so in a hex editor.

  • Blumer65

A verizon Rep says they will launch with adobe support. They went over it in there meeting friday

  • parrotheadmjb

Well at least we know that the 4G LTE upgrade is included in the purchase price, according to that twitter picture you have :)

  • adam

hey guys, btw “Spring 2011″ starts in less than a month….. just saying

Would you rather they pushed the release date back a month just for flash, or release without it?

    • Joe

Yeah really, its not like they said Summer 2011; Spring 2011 = weeks, not months.

      • Eric

umm did u not realize that spring is 4 weeks away and its 13 weeks long which = ur waiting 1 to 4 months.

        • Joe

Yes, but I prefer to be optimistic and think of things in terms of weeks, but thanks anyway for your dickish remarks.

          • Eric

well i am more realistic. Btw no problem thats what I am here for :)

    • Joe

Yeah really, its not like they said Summer 2011; Spring 2011 = weeks, not months.

  • Dshudson

No flash is bullshit, these people need to get their heads out of their ass.. and people were worried about not getting one day of release, yeah right..there will be shitloads. This is going to be like when dx came out with promise of the update, which didn’t come until months later..

  • Carl

Without Flash, you might as well get the iPad.

    • Guest

Thats makes absolutely NO sense. Get a product that has less specs just because it isnt launching with Flash. Flash will be available on the Xoom soon. Can you say that about your ipad?

Xoom has additional storage abilities. Can you say that about your ipad?

    • K9584

So you’re saying since the Xoom wont have flash out of the gate, I should run and buy an Apple IOS product!?!?!?! Insanity!
The Droid X didn’t come with Flash at launch, and you didn’t see everyone run and buy the iPhone! Software takes time to code people. Flash WILL be soon.

Ibcant understand why ANY grown up would want to have a toy over a REAL Tablet computer, running a real OS…. HONEYCOMB

Seriously, stop comparing the Xoom to the ipad.
      There’s absolutely no need.

      • Eric

I am no Apple fan by any means but if this was a real piece of technology then it should come out with all the bells and whistles and not make me wait for it a few months for a fews features. To me that just sounds like the company is in a rush to get my (the consumers) money before the other company comes out with something equal or better than and takes it away

flash would be a must have for me to watch my youtube.

    • Guest

There is an app for that. No need to say flash is required for you tube when youtube apps come on the device.

      • Anonymous

Good point, is it going to work with out flash support at launch though?

        • http://twitter.com/mfg68 MFG

Yes, it will 100% work. We’ve seen it in demos.

    • Padrick77

You know this comes with a youtube app…no flash needed. Also I dont get why people need flash I never use it on my phone and with playon I get all the streaming media without the need for flash.

Yeah, this whole xoom thing…. kinda failed at launch….. oh well I’ll pick it up when it’s $299 in October

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dan-Carter/500179789 Dan Carter

Yep! Why would you buy this when Samsung, Toshiba and LG are coming out with very similar products in the next few weeks? SOMEONE is going to undercut Motorola on price.

  • Anonymous

Let them do what they have to. I’m sure they’re trying to insure it takes full advantage of the hardware. You’ll be hspot they waited so you have the best experience. Besides, I doubt the wait will be long; I’d say late March is when to except this.

  • Anonymous

I will wait until they have flash and I imagine the price will have dropped as well by that point….maybe this justifies waiting for some of the tabs coming out soon that are dual boot Android/Windows.

  • Pattont

I can’t believe a device of this caliber is going to release without Adobe Flash. Maybe it was Adobe’s problem, but for them not to launch with even a BETA of the Adobe Flash platform seems incredibly stupid.

  • http://twitter.com/mfg68 MFG

I don’t know. I’m willing to bet Flash 10.1 from the Market will work just fine.

Plus, I am waiting to see those reviews come out from the big sites. Hopefully the embargo is lifted before launch and they can tell us if Flash works.

  • CivilDroid

Im soooo looking forward to the launch of this thing……so xda can port it over to my G tablet!! XDA FTW!!

    • Joe

Can somebody please tell me where this stupid “FTW!” crap started, and furthermore who at that point actually though it was somehow cool to say?

  • Anonymous

For everyone who is looking forward to this tablet, what are you going to use it for. I’m trying to figure that out as it seems like our phones can do 99% of what this can do (and in some cases more). Is it just because it has honeycomb?

    • Anonymous

Well i am getting the XOOM instead of a new phone/computer.

    • http://twitter.com/mfg68 MFG

I will love this for my commute. 10.1 inches of beauty. HD screen, e-reader with a proper sized screen, beautiful videos, music player, full browser on a huge screen, Gtalk video chat with my GF, all of my normal apps, etc. This will allow me to keep my phone in my pocket and not kill it’s battery on my commute. And at home I will use this around the house instead of unplugging all of the hard drives and cables from my 15″ MBP and lugging it around. It’s more of a desktop for me, so this will be nice for reading and browsing in bed and on the couch…and on the toilet :P

      • Anonymous

That’s exactly what I was looking for in an answer, thanks.

          No problemo :)

It looks as if the XOOM will launch WITHOUT FLASH, this is a major let down it looks as if moto has lost it on this one .

I love the idea and structure of the xoom, but I have to wait for the wifi only version. I mean, I’m just going to tether it to my phone once I get a new 4g one in april(ish).

So I will be waiting a few months for a wifi only and ALL features to be available.

And yet still no info on the WiFi version…

Good thing you cropped out the part where it doesn’t launch with Flash. Good thing with my Droid, I never use flash and uninstalled it because it’s shit and is always a security risk. Good thing Flash is growing more and more obsolete and doesn’t matter in the smartphone vs smartphone or tablet vs tablet or most of the trolls on this site vs Apple debate. Good thing.

The problem with the Xoom is not only is it overpriced, but the average consumer will know nothing about it. Moto needs to put out a commercial that has more than just specs, and actually shows what it does. That is one thing that Apple does right. Also a wifi only model is badly needed soon, before the iPad2 or else this tablet is doomed.

  • Anonymous

If the “no flash at launch” thing is true, I bet Verizon talked Moto and/or Adobe into holding it back so people wouldn’t be able to stream March Madness games on their XOOM from CBS’ website. Isn’t that all Flash? You better believe I’ll find a way regardless.

  • Anonymous

Engadget is reporting that it won’t ship with flash. The xoom is doa and i’d be surprised if it even sells 50000 units the first month.

    • DroidzFX

Well if engadget says so it must be true…Im sorry but that site is garbage. I go there for laugh once and awhile.

      • Anonymous

Perhaps your failure is your ability to read. I agree that when the wifi only version comes out, numbers will be better, but moto still hasn’t showed a compelling reason to purchase this over something else and their ads are a joke. Why not actually show what the device can do rather than rely on some CG nonsense?

Great. No Flash, meaning no Hulu, no Netflix, lack of decent games, and $600+contract or $800 off contract. That’s what I call a major fail. For Pete’s sake, if you’re going to try to compete with the iPad, and charge more, give us a good reason to buy it.

    • Spontec

Netflix streaming actually runs in Silverlight. Just saying…

    • Anonymous

even with no flash at launch, which I honestly don’t believe given the hands-on videos we’ve seen with flash running, at least it still won’t be just a big iPod Touch.

I used to think that about iPad before I actually used one. The only apps on mine are ones developed for its HD screen. If it was just a big iPod it would big as big a ripoff as a Tablet running Froyo.

For $800 you can get an apple refurb iPad + a budget laptop. There is no chance of Xoom being able to compete.

        • Guest

For a comparison model, you cannot. If you compare the 3G service to a 3g ipad you are looking at the xoom being 40bucks more roughly.

Yes, $300 more expensive than the POS 16GB Wi-Fi only iPad with lower resolution, no HDMI out, no USB connectivity, no GPS, 4:3 screen ratio (ridiculous), docks in portrait (ridiculous), 1/3 of the processor, no cameras, 1/4 of the RAM, 1/2 the internal storage (1/4 if you count the XOOMs expandable storage), and still is just a big iPod Touch.

If don’t know if you are aware or not but the 16GB Wi-Fi only model is the biggest seller. The people want a tablet that costs $500 not one that costs $800. Moto will sell only a few XOOM’s to the die-hard droid fans but that’s it the general public will walk away.

Now the flash thing is a bit dissapointed, that stuff should not be a question at launch.

You don’t know what you’re talking about do you? Netflix uses Microsoft’s Silverlight plugin, so the lack of flash has nothing to do with the ability to play Netflix. As for Hulu, they block all mobile/tablet browsers with flash, so flash wouldn’t help you there either.

Blah! Don’t try to burst our bubbles, damnit!

It’s not like Flash will never be available on the XOOM, it’s just not expected until Spring 2011. You’ve waited this long, you can wait a few more months. Damn, people are so impatient now a days.

Also, you might want to know your facts before posting here or else it just makes you look foolish.

Nice to see verizon can still give out release dates……

  • http://AndroidTaskForce.com Chris Gustafson

Hey Kellex. You left out the most important part. The bottom right. Where it says “Adobe Flash expected Spring 2011″

The Xoom won’t launch with Adobe Flash

Update the story and throw that in there.

I’ll believe it when I see it. I could have sworn the hands-on demos clearly showed flash content being displayed.

Yeah, and the thunderbolt demonstrated skype, but apparantly wont ship with it. See that’s what Verizon does. On a side note, does anyone know if the xoom will have a locked bootloader?

        • Anonymous

I don’t see how Skype or Adobe Flash have anything to do with Verizon.

        • Kdkinc

Were Motorola !! We’ve got your Locked.

    • Anonymous

Or just a summary of charges for lte.

  • MQ

    Ok, let’s see what’s gonna happen…

Awesome. Now to wait 2 more days…God its killing me.
