DROID X2 Pictures and Specs Surface: Dual-core Processor, 1GB RAM, and qHD Screen Included

We first reported that the 2011 DROID line-up would include a freshly upgraded DROID X2 powered by a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, but now we have a set of pictures and additional specs to confirm all of that.  Site The Mobi Zone snagged an entire gallery of shots of the upcoming DX2 and you’ll notice right away that it looks no different than the original.  In fact, the only difference we’re seeing is the removal of a dedicated camera button.

The phone won’t have a front facing camera, but will have that dual-core power, 1GB RAM, qHD screen and the new Blur that we’ve seen on the BIONIC.  It looks like a beast, but the lack of a front camera is a little frustrating.  I guess Verizon won’t be including them in any of their non-4G phones?  And how could this phone have more RAM than the BIONIC?

Other specs:

  • NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core 1GHz processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • QHD LCD Display – 540 x 960 Resolution (Same as Motorola Bionic)
  • 3G Only – No LTE/4G
  • 8MP Rear Facing Camera (No Front Cam)
  • Froyo (Android 2.2) – Could get Gingerbread (Adnroid 2.3) before launch
  • New Moto Blur (Same as Droid Bionic)
  • FM Radio
  • Locked/Encrypted BootLoader
  • Launch in Q2 of 2011
  • No Hardware Camera button

Full gallery after the break.

Update:  We were asked by the source to remove the pics.  Sorry folks!

Wait, I basically own this phone now.

what an absolute was of time and energy on this thing. Noting worth while for an upgrade that is for darn sure. Looks to me like Moto is falling back into there same nightmare with trying to ride the Razr line for way to long and got crushed.

And for all the whiners about the locked bootloader get a grip already. This type of stuff is and will be coming and happening on all phones at some point from every mfg. It is not all Moto the carriers want this hacking stuff stopped entirely and are forcing the mfgs to put this stuff in place. As an example that is why the Mirage was never released for VZW. It was to easily hackable and VZW wold not approve it because of it.

I happily own a DroidX and was truly looking forward to the X2. Not anymore. I agree with the comments on Moto not learning from their mistakes of the past. How can they release a new phone with not real improvements other than a faster processor. While everyone else focuses on increasing the power and capabilities of their phones to keep you buying, Moto seems to think that we’ll buy an “upgrade” because they are Moto and have a great following. Hello???? You are not Apple. And if the BestBuy pricing is right on the Xoom, we are going to once again see the rise and fall of Moto. Hey Moto, have you ever considered investing in a Marketing Research Department?

If the X2 has an encrypted bootloader as well with NO unlock “implemented” for the Dev community,
then I will NOT buy this Moto Android product.
If Moto thinks its okay to lock down devices running Android’s Open source OS, then maybe they should start manufacturing Apple products instead. (If they seriously think what theyre doing is really ok…)

I love Moto’s hardware and craftmanship, but the locked down bootloaders will turn me AND Those I know towards OTHER Android device manufacturers.
In this case, looking in the mirror is all Moto has to do to figure out what they’re doing wrong and then fix it.

    Hello cliq xt

  • Guest

Still boot-locked, only 1GHz on the processors when they’re coming out with 1.2GHz dual cores soon, no LTE, no front camera, and they took off the hardware camera button. This seems like a step backwards for Motorola.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=10215724 Raj Bhatt

ugh, LTE would make this a must have. I guess the Bionic is still at the top of my list for now, even with the low RAM.

  • Anonymous

Im going where ever the devs go

  • Anonymous

Would rather get the Bionic then this. My next phone purchase I want to have a front facing camera and 4g LTE. Im actually really suprised they didn’t put a front facing camera but like Kellex mentioned guess they are saving that for 4g phones it seems like.

  • Mr. Steve

Does locked/encrypted bootloader mean a new harder to customize phone, or the bootloader that’s on the Droid X/2/2G/Pro?

  • Rsfu86

Bionic with more RAM and no 4G? Whether this is worst or best news for me depends on one thing; how much 4G will cost. If it’s expensive/teired, screw the Bionic, hello X2!

  • Njd32

Wait a minute, this looks like a droid x running that gingerbread leak we saw earlier? O.o

    • Ben

      I agree…

  • Alvinm 77

Woooow, same form factor Moto? Really? Same locked boot loader? …. Yeah I’m pretty sure. No thanks Moto

  • http://twitter.com/jbernard703 Jeff Bernard

No 4g and no front facing camera means no purchase for me. Motorola was on its’ way to bankruptcy before the Droid and with this phone and the Xoom pricing I look forward to seeing them out of business.

This makes me laugh so hard why even bother

  • CallMeCrow

. . .no front facing camera (le’gasp!) how will we live? We are all so used to phones providing this most audacious and very necessary feature that we cannot be expected to buy a phone without it. Bleh, I remember when a phone was used primarily for making. . .wait for it. . .phone calls. While I enjoy having the latest and greatest – I always ask myself if I absolutely need every technological amenity available. Truth be told, I already know the answer and so instead determine which of them I can live without. Just because a device is capable of doing a thing it doesn’t mean that thing needs doing. Give me back my Samsung Wafer! With that (points above) said, I love my OG Droid.

    • http://twitter.com/AstronautJonze Tony D

But if you can have a feature without affecting the basic functions of the phone, why not include that feature? Besides, these aren’t just phones. If you want just a phone, then what are you doing on this site?

      • CallMeCrow

. . .and if you can leave a feature out without affecting the basic function{s} of the phone why let the exclusion of said feature determine whether or not you’ll purchase it? You’re absolutely correct – these are not just phones. In fact I think it’s important that we remember what else they’re not. They are not computer or laptop replacements. They also are not a NASA command module that we carry around in our pocket in the event that we need to launch a shuttle or satellite. I may not want my phone to become any of those things, but that doesn’t mean I dislike feature rich pieces of technology either. As I mentioned previously – I own and use an OG Droid, and love it – that’s why I’m here.

        • john

Actually my droidx is my laptop and computer replacement…i can honestly say I have never used my comp after I got my x…it could be a nasa command module if you wanted it to be…these days phones can pretty much do everything a computer does…maybe even more…my laptop can’t navigate..my laptop can’t settle a debate at a bar…my laptop isn’t droid

          • CallMeCrow

(shrug) I can honestly say that no phone will ever truly replace the desktop computer (will eat his words fifty years from now if that ceases to be the case). No phone, at least no phone currently on the market, can deliver the same performance that a mid to high end laptop device can. You may no longer use your pc, now that you have a small brick in your back pocket, but I sincerely doubt you’re ready to toss out the old girl either. I’m not denying that smart phones can perform any of the functions you noted above (though I’m certain that a laptop could in fact provide you directions via Google maps – and or help you settle once and for all just who played Rocky in the Boondock Saints). I am, however, saying that a phone simply cannot be all things to all people – and that’s okay. Also, the lack of one feature or another (one that we’ve managed to live with out for no little while by-the-by) should not by any means cause us to discount a new product all together. Note – we’ve had to sacrifice size in order to increase the performance of our phones – by the time they can do all that we would like them to do – I’ve no doubt that they will “resemble” the computers we’re already using.

  • Mike

Why can’t any manufacturer get it right with specs? It’s like they always leave one thing off that should have been there, just to make you buy the next best thing. They failed with the Bionic only giving it 512mb RAM. They could have at least given it 768mb. Now the DX2 which has 1gb of ram, but wait no front facing camera. Just release a phone that has dual core, lte, 1 gb of ram, and a 1.3mp or 2.0mp ffc. Is it that hard? No they always leave something out on purpose I think.

  • Anonymous

Someone is selling me a Droid x for 240. Is that a steal? I’m thinking of selling my og Droid for 150 after I purchase the x.

    • Anonymous

No, you can walk into vzw and get it for 199. Plus you get warranty coverage and you can insure it. I almost went the same route as you and I’m glad I didn’t. Peace of mind goes a long way.

      • Anonymous

Oh. But I don’t want to use my 2 year contract just yet. So the phone
        without contract is $500. :0

        • Pumpkin

I did the exact same thing as you. I bought a Droid x for $250 from Craigslist and sold my Droid for $150 a week ago. I’m thrilled , it’s rooted and working great. Because I had Insurance from Verizon on my Droid, they just transferred it over to the Droid x, which I didn’t expect and which delighted/relived me. I also wasn’t ready to “cash in” my upgrade yet, either.

          • Joker

  • Mike

Hey Moto, why is the 2nd phone of each series of your phones look almost exactly the same? Take the Droid 1 and 2 for example. Almost exactly the same aside from color and keyboard and the hardware specs. At least put a little innovation into your products.

    • Champlification

If they make it completely different, why not just give it a new name? If it’s a Droid x 2,it should be somewhat similar to the droid x. If only in looks

      • Mike

They don’t have to make it completely different, but come on…this looks EXACTLY the same. If you had a DX and DX2 next to each other, you probably couldn’t tell the difference.

        • Mike

Ohh I know, take away the camera button! Now it’s not the same lol.

      • Tyler Durden

This is a sweet phone. much better then the OG DX. come on people. stop acting like this is the only phone they are releasing this year. maybe some dont care for 4g since half of you on this forum wont have it till 2013. This phone just like the Bionic with the same specs but no 4g/ffc. Oh wait! 1GB of RAM?? Something Bionic doesnt have! Hate all you want but the DX2 is a better phone IMO. Its even better looking.

        • Tojiro

Correction: This is sweet HARDWARE. As long as Motorola continues to encumber it with Blur and an encrypted bootloaded it’s hard to justify it’s status as a “sweet phone”. Give me this with Vanilla Android and a easy to mod bootloader and I’ll buy two!

          • Anonymous

            Exactly….

No more locked phones for me, ever.

          • Coaster36

Exactly what I was thinking. No front camera and a locked bootloader? No thanks. I really like moto but Ill wait for the INC2 and hope they unlock their bootloader and have a front camera.

If none of them do by the time I upgrade Ill stick with my OG droid.

          • Anonymous

I beg to differ. As far as it being a ‘phone’ if its anything like the Droid X, it will have very good reception and noise cancellation.

That alone makes it a sweet phone to me, everything else is just icing on the cake.

        • Mr.Joe

Oh wait that 1GB of RAM is DDR not the DDR2 from the Bionic. Something the DX2 doesn’t have! I’d rather have DDR2 over DDR.

The DX2 is a joke. The ONLY way they could sell it is if it launched with gingerbread. Moto had to do the same with the D2 and Froyo.

Remember? The DX was vastly superior to the D2 (except for that keyboard). The Bionic is simply superior to this DX2. It has a front-facing camera, LTE and a bigger battery.

The bigger battery matters. The Bionic has a 1930mAh battery. The DX has a 1540mAh battery. I like the battery life on my DX, but there’s no way it can be preserved with that 1540mAh model. Maybe Motorola will even downclock the AP20H? Do we really want that?

Oh yeah, you want a gig of RAM? Yeah, that’s a joke. The ONLY reason the Atrix needs 1GB of RAM is to drive an entire Linux laptop. Even Anandtech says the Atrix probably could’ve been fine with 768MB and anything more than 512MB is unnecessary even for a high-end phone.

          http://www.anandtech.com/show/4165/the-motorola-atrix-4g-preview/6

I love my Droid X, but when I upgrade, I want a phone that is suited to its hardware. The battery and RAM seem mismatched for what the DX is trying to be.

          • http://twitter.com/TuxDotKing Avichi Suite

You’re pretty much right. I doubt that anybody here would really ever need or use the full GB of RAM on the phone during its lifetime (i.e.: When Moto stops updating and making it). I like Moto phones, but let’s be honest here; I wouldn’t even begin to care about the 1 GB until it came with an unlocked bootloader as well. Then there’s a *much* better chance that it will actually be used to it’s fullest someday.

      • Froto

        Amen!

Moto has a history of coming out with a good phone, then for some stupid reason when the consumer is expecting a great follow up they seem to get stupid on us.

      • Anonymous

        i.e. droid 2…

        • Anonymous

          Correct you are Sir :)

        • Anonymous

I think the Droid 2 was a solid update to the Droid 1, Droid 2 is still a great phone and no way the Droid 1 would have survived against the competition thus far with the only exception being the locked boot loader.

          • Anonymous

The D2 was a pathetic update to the Droid. Double the RAM (good), marginal bump to the CPU, lock the bootloader, and encumber it with Blur. Those last two were MAJOR downsides to it.

I was issued a D2 as a warranty replacement for my Droid and sent it back after butting up against Blur’s shortcomings for a week and got a refurb Droid.

          • DBK

Even though I have a D2 and love it, I have to agree. The D2 is just not a worthy successor the the OG Droid. The D2G came closer but still fell short. I hope the D3 will turn out to be the Droid we are looking for.

No LTE, no Front facing camera and the old style, what’s going on MOTO, are you reverting back yet again.

      • Droidor

No front facing camera is a big mistake. Really, that is the only thing I am missing from my DroidX, which I love more than an iPHONE.(and I am a big Apple supportor). Well, a better camera would be great.

Same size is fine with me, not having to purchase new docks and other peripherals is a big reason why I love Apple.

    • Anonymous

I was just about to ask if these guys were sure that this wasn’t a Droid x with a new blur rom on it, until I saw that it didn’t have a camera button..come on moto..innovation.

I’m sure the 1GB of RAM in here is DDR like in the Atrix. The Bionic has DDR2.

    • STiK

I have to agree. 4G and front cam are not essential to me. I rarely use network data as is and I most definately have no use for a front facing camera. One of the reasons I was turned off by the bionic was it’s 512MB ram. This is exactly what I was looking for, Tegra 2 – 1GB ram. Maybe once phones are using lte for data/phone then I will look at a 4G phone. Untill then this is more than adequate.

      • Gregory

A front facing camera is kinda like having flash. I hardely ever use it, but I like to know that I have the option

The only reason I would choose this over the Bionic is if Verizon jacks up 4G prices and you don’t have 4G coverage in your area yet.

    • Mr.Joe

The only reason I would think someone wouldn’t want this is because it lacks what some 4G phones have.

I think this device is fine and I think what it will come down to is how much are 4G devices and their plans. So far we’ve seen the TB at $249 which seems to have peoples panties in a bunch. Who knows what the LTE data plans will be.

Assuming this stays at the $199 average price and the $29.99 data plan still exists this would be a good phone.

      • http://twitter.com/BiggiePhat JG

but with people saying 4g plans will start out same price and unlimited….id like to grab a 4g phone..lock in the unlimited plan…and laugh at the people who have to spend 40-50 dollars for their 5gb 4g plans.
