Confirmed: Motorola XOOM is $799 at Best Buy, 1-Month Data Package Required to Unlock WiFi

In next Sunday’s Best Buy ad (February 20th), we already found out that the HTC Thunderbolt would be $249 on 2-year contract and $749 at full retail, but what about the Motorola XOOM?  We had seen a price of $799 a couple of weeks back and also heard that a 1-month data subscription would be required to unlock WiFi on the device.  Well peeps, we’ve confirmed both of those.  The price is indeed $799 at BBY and you’ll have to grab at a data plan for the first month in order to unlock WiFi.  We’re assuming that you can cancel immediately after and enjoy the device with just WiFi, but you’ll shell out an extra $20 on day 1.

Oh, and Best Buy definitely expects to sell it on the 24th.

Note:  So that everyone is clear, this is the ad that comes out on the 20th.  You won’t see it in tomorrow’s newspaper.

Cheers ____!

Really? “Activative”. We saw that error two weeks ago and it STILL made it in print. Best Buy…that reason right there will keep me from buying from you.

  • Anonymous

Wifi is controled on the device? And if it is how long will it take someone to root it and bypass this feature? Do you have to buy the month then or can you take the device home without a 3g plan?

  • Rich

I was really looking forward to this but this is predatory pricing is insane. I will wait for wifi only version or maybe even an alternative HC 3.0 model. I’m thinking of unloading my Motorola stock too.

  • Shanklin07

This is so strange is it not? I mean a tablet is, in my mind, a device that should be cheaper than a fully capable computer. And on top of that, it is running Android as the OS. Android has grown because it is a great OS, but also because it usually is running on hardware at a competitive price. I get that the Xoom is awesome and if you want the best you have to pay for it. But this is not what I was expecting price wise at all. I cant afford to just shell out another $900 bucks just after Christmas! I have kids, a mortgage and all the other bills they want me to pay. This price will greatly hinder the sale of this device. Normal guys/gals like me know what I’m saying. Oh and I see Droid Life has an inside guy at some best buy lol. I can see it, it’s probably some random guy giving them info.

    More like the Motorala DOOM.

  • LinuxLover

    No sale… I’ll pass.

  • Arthurpjohnson

DOA. Would have loved it at five bills, even six, but eight? Kudos to the engineers, fail for marketing.

800 plus tax plus the $20 for at least one month, this thing will come out to be around $890. That is ridiculous for a tablet, which pretty much in all cases boils down to be an oversized smart phone. I think it will be an awesome device no doubt but not for close to 900 bucks, when my handheld android can do just about everything the x00m(although not as pretty or as fast) can and is way more portable. Not to mention the Bionic is dropping in a few months with a Tegra 2 and will most likely be $250…no thanks, i’ll pass on the x00m for now.

And I thought the iPad was overpriced when it came out..wow.

  • Anonymous

To add insult to injury, you will pay a $35 activation fee. So make it $55. Of course, google navigation, video streaming while driving, and all the other good things that having ubiquitous 3G coverage is actually a benefit for most people. $20 for 1 GB is a good deal in all reality, assuming you only have to use the mobile capabilities occasionally. Having an iPad, I have to say that the 3G capability is like a Swiss Army Knife. One never knows how much you can use it until you carry one every day. Give it a try, I think $20 is a steal to be connected anywhere anytime as an option. For those who are completely sedentary, or live in a saturated open wifi area, you may have a point. However, for those of us that do travel or live in suburban or rural environments, it’s a kickass offering. Why do you think they make you use it? Because if you don’t try it you don’t see value. There is cost, and there is value. It costs $20 bucks, but the value is immeasurable when you need internet and it’s always there.

If I were to have any tablet I would question how much I would use the 3G. I mean I have a droid now. I will most likely get the Droid Bionic when it comes out, so I mean as far as mobility with Navigation and such I’d have that covered with my phone pretty much 100% of the time. I would maybe take it to work with me, but we have wifi there, but I wouldn’t mind doing some tablet gaming on my downtime. Other than that i’m usually out and about or at the gym which I use my phone as an mp3 player. So I would probably using the 3G capabilities of this few and far between. Not to mention the Bionic will be 4G and the Xoom 4G update will probably have ANOTHER fee associated with it lol. That’s just me though.

  • Roshizzle

Way to go Moto. making that iPad 2 look real good right about now.

  • retarded..

I don’t give a damn what the reasoning is… if im paying $800 for a tab, you should be pleased im a customer of yours instead of screwing me for an additional $20. That’s so damned dirty ill never buy another motorola product based on that alone. There’s no logic or good reason for this. Just pure greed and I wont support or fall for it. Next please..

  • Ajdurk

Spec wise the xoom is great but the iPad does what it does well enough, and is guaranteed to be supported. If you buy an iPad you don’t have to worry if it will exist next year. Who knows with these Android devices, especially at $800 a pop. Also you can’t beat Ipads 10 hour battery life.

  • Anonymous

LOeffingL. Good job Motorola/Verizon. You’ve officially killed the Xoom before a single review has come out. They are delusional if they think more than a few thousand people will buy this.

Here’s hoping there is a Wi-Fi version that is at least $150 cheaper. Otherwise it is iPad 2 (or I guess a cheaper Android tablet) for me and anyone reasonable.

  • Prankm

Well, it kills me to say it, but this just pushed me into waiting for an iPad 2. The $800 price tag sucks, but it’s no different than the high-end iPad. But locking down WiFi until you buy a data package? F you, MOTO. I loved you so much, and you breaketh my heart right before Valentine’s Day.

    R.I.P., Xoom.

  • HD Guy

Yeah price is a huge factor on peoples decision to buy something but it is not everything. It’s all about brand appeal and what makes them purchase a particular brand. Why do people buy Harley Davidson motorcycles when there are similar looking makes/models for much less? Because the brand, When some dude rolls up next to a HD on a Honda knockoff that is 5k less he knows he is subpar and people look at the two and envy the HD guy. The HD guy feels like he is the shiznit, that’s the difference.

Same thing with tech toys when you pull out an IPAD, LG or Samsung tablet in the cafe you will feel like the Honda knockoff dude when someone busts a XOOM out on your A$$!!

13 days and counting until my new toy…..

    • Robsmith Nikon

What are you smoking? I love my Droid… but its the Honda in Daytona when people are playing with iphones. “Look… like an iphone only not.”

Like it or not… Apple changed the game. I was thrilled to get a smartphone that was not Apple… and not a crapberry… but facts are what they are… ipad and iphone are the name brand items that the sheep buy. Android is still catching up. As a photographer this is very evident. I am one of very few non-apple photogs that I know.

thats pretty arrogant for them to price it so high and expect people to buy it… with the number one competitor being available at 500..

  • DannyJedi

I am currently saving up for the new Imac. I have no need for a tablet, but after the shitty back handed anti modding attitude for Motorola, I will be getting an Ipad to compliment it. If I get anything at all.
Or maybe a macbook, for a few hundred dollars more than a gimmicky stupid tablet.

    • Anonymous

Apple doesn’t exaclt welcome modders with open arms either.

  • Obviousman

    F Motorola.

  • DannyJedi

The cost is way to much, and when you add in the bend over put-together for the one month of 3G service, it makes no sense.
I understand paying a price to be “bleeding edge” but in a few short months, this tab will be just one of the pack.
Who cares, big deal, bah humbug.
Don’t believe me? Go on craigslist, and look at gadgets that people were drooling over two years ago, you can buy now for nothing.
We are still in a Depression. There are people that can’t even make rent this month. I am sure you know some.
All I am trying to say, at the end of the day, the Xoom, is just another POS toy that the sheeple will gobble up, and celebs get for free in gift baskets.
Do yourself a favor, put money away for a rainy day.

  • k6tcher

Mehhh… I guess if $799 + $20 + $35 ($855 including activation) is in your price range, you never really worried about the price anyway and this is no issue for you.

The rest of us must pass if there is no $500 version later.

BTW, Moto, there are far less buyers with about $900 in their pockets than us $500 customers. The Xoom will NOT succeed at the current selling price. When you finally do decide to lower the price, the $500 customers will have moved on to something equally as good (like from a Toshiba) and satisfying.

I dont know everyone is talking about this xoom but what about the thunderbolt being 729 that is 70 dollars less than the xoom now that is crazy

At least you can get the T-bolt for $250 with your contract. They do that with the Xoom and people will buy them out.

Wow, is that $800 subsidized with a data plan?

Thats what Im saying, you can just forget about the off contract price

any word on when the wifi only is to be released?

  • Vtxtank

I will have one on the 24th and try to sell my *pad that afternoon!!!

lol you better get to selling it right now

  • Anonymous

Purchasing 2 – one for me and the wife! 24th cant get here fast enough!!!

    • Anonymous

I bet your wife would prefer an iPad

  • Stephen D

This sucks. If they really want to compete with the iPad, it would be a lot cheaper and there would be Wi-Fi only versions. Screw the XOOM now. It was 800 bucks to build my computer…

  • Anonymous

Verizon, All ways watch out for the catch. It’s not good enough that Verizon has a great tablet to sell, but they gotta stick it to you as well.

I can’t wait for the Wifi only but buyer beware when you open up that wallet, Verizon is the King of upselling and adding in those extra incenttaives LOL, which turns out to be extra cash going out the window. This deal really sucks, just to unlock wifi, Verizon PLEASSSSE!!!

I’ll wait this is really hitting the/ us consumers below the belt.

  • Paul

Soo… what happens if I buy the device, but not a data plan? Will I never be able to use wifi? Or is that just for one month?

  • Droiddoes

It looks like everything is going to stay like 1984 Motorola

  • Chris Nimon

If these were $250 with the 2 year contract they probably wouldn’t be able to make enough to keep up with demand. I bet this option would take a HUGE bite out of the ipad. The way it looks now, well I bet there will be plenty available.

  • http://twitter.com/jbernard703 Jeff Bernard

So Kellex are you sticking with your “they will sell millions of these, MILLIONS” prediction?

  • Rip Off

I want this Xoom over the Ipad, but not at that price. I’m out!!!

  • Mr.Joe

I <3 Locked Bootloaders. This is my kind of tab!

  • Larry Mao

Motorola and Verizon seem intent on making the Xoom as unappealing to all of us as possible. First, $800 for the tablet, then a required data plan, then a required data plan to unlock Wifi. What’s next, are they gonna charge us a $.50 cent tax to download free apps?

    • F350bear

Shhhh… don’t give them any ideas!

  • Alvinm 77

I’ll be waiting to see if the black and silver version that passed through FCC is a WiFi only versions. It will be cool to just 4G hotspot it for me. Plus the colorway is gonna match my Thunderbolt. I have no interest in using 3G on the Xoom. I heard that 4G hotspot was free with the Thunderbolt anyway. If not, either way. I might just wait.

  • Anonymous

I’ll keep my $800, thanks. Ill wait until they inevitably drop the price due to low demand.

  • Kashtrey

The price is crazy. But there is one thing that I can think of that would justify such a high price. If Moto offers a free hardware upgrade to the 4G radio and has built the costs of the upgrade into the price then $800 is not a ridiculous price point. Now if they want us to go to Verizon and pay 50-100 to upgrade to 4G when available on top of the initial price, that’s just ridiculous.

  • http://twitter.com/john_ecko John Sevilla

Just don’t buy it. Let’s wait it out until they drop the price.

    • Jroth5714

      Didnt work for gas

      • http://www.searingarrow.com AlienSix

        haha sad but true

      • Anonymous

        It worked for the iPhone.

  • Jroth5714

Ok now everybody really the if the price is that big of a factor you should spend money else where if 100 or 200 dollars is going to make you or break you then stop even trying to post about this. IT IS NEW TECHNOLOGY. I do not go around and say Ferrari cars are too expensive that will never work, they seem to be doing fine sames as Mercedes. I mean you guys wine a lot but I do not see any legit arguments. People saying that IPAD is 600 with Wi-Fi only. Yea well this has 3g/4g(upgrade) so that price goes out the window and this is a year newer model. I mean you have Inflation and everything to factor I mean people expecting to pay 500 You should be looking for low end tablets because your crazy to think top specs will get you that price.

    • Anonymous

Apple seems to be able to release improved products each year at the same price so your argument is moot on that point.

However, you are right on about the 1 or 200 more in price. It costs to be at the bleeding edge.

      • Jroth5714

Yea but go to this link yea its 64GB but it is only 3g (I know Xoom is only upgradeable to 4G) and not dual core. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Apple%26%23174%3B+-+iPad%26%23153%3B+with+Wi-Fi+%2B+3G+-+64GB/9811319.p?id=1218178657229&skuId=9811319
and tell me the price so my argument is not moot it is spot on. Who would pay for that price for older Tech

        • Anonymous

that’s right. just keep drinking the Koolaid. the number of G’s means nothing. i’d rather pay once for my G and tether to my LTE mobile.

          • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

Koolaide? So someone that has the money to buy this and doesnt complain about the price because it is spot on is not a fanboy? You need some help bro

      • Budcar38

Improved as in the addition of folders?

    • Wmsco51

and your the reason they get away with it because you don’t have sense on cents.

  • Eric

umm and i the only one who sees something wrong with the math. How is a phone retail at 749 and then a tablet 799. WTF????

  • Anonymous

I have my heart set up getting this, but since roebeet has made the Viewsonic G-Tablet worth running, and I am certain I will see Honeycomb on it, at $379 for wi-fi only, I might have to live with the poor viewing angles and stick it out for a while and hope for a $100 or so price drop in fairly short order (which I expect since as other tablets start flooding the market).

  • http://twitter.com/BlackTaxi2d Henry S

this is fine, it won’t sell at all, and they’ll be forced to lower the price to move quantities.
unless they plan to sell 100, which is unlikely given that they paid so much for a superbowl ad for it.

also, who says that rooting and a little hacking can’t get past this ?

  • dshizzel

I’m sorry — this thing costs more than a quad core PC with big monitor? N-O-T-H-I-N-G is THAT good. Maybe not even at HALF the price.

  • Chris Nimon

Yeah, no thanks moto. Instead I’ll go buy 2 laptops with far more capability.

    • Anonymous

After seeing that price that’s how im starting to look at it.
