Friday Poll: Ready to Buy a Motorola XOOM?

For some reason, we haven’t actually asked this question and maybe it’s because we’re still waiting for final pricing details, but I’m dying to know how many of our readers are actually ready to jump into the tablet game and buy a Motorola XOOM. Pictures we have suggest that the price will land at $799 on launch, although there are rumors floating around which hint at a subsidized price of around $499. This is supposed to be the first legitimate competitor to you-know-who and after getting our hands all over Honeycomb through the SDK preview, we can’t wait to pick one up. What about you?

Not having a WiFi only version will kill the Xoom and all but guarantee obsolescence to the iPad 1 and especially 2. Motorola needs to get their heads out of their a55es. I really REALLY want a Xoom…but I seriously doubt I’ll get one if I’m roped into ANOTHER data plan.

Verizon does not offer 1 or 2 year contracts on tablets, and they market their data plans as “no obligation, month-to-month data plans, starting at $20 for 1GB.” Highly unlikely that the Xoom will require a 1 or 2 year data plan.

everyone seems to have preconceived notions about honeycomb and its functionality (or lack there of) but all we have seen before is a preview video and a buggy SDK. so until there is a hands on of every feature or at least an official list of features you can all shove your hate for the xoom in a sack and sit on it. haha im more than likely gonna buy one. even though i have an ipad. which im not to fond of anymore. and still rocking the OG droid waiting on the bionic. oh and wi-fi version only+ bionic+hotspot equals win in my book.

I don’t know. There are plenty of sites that reported (from CES) that VZW stores with service centers would handle the upgrade. Why in the world would Moto want to take responsibility for return shipments?

If there is a Wifi only version, then yes. If not, then I will wait for other devices.

I’d consider it if and only if it…

* Was completely vanilla Android 3.0. No skins, no custom widgets
* Didn’t have an encrypted bootloader (eFuse == No buy for me. Learned that the hard way with my X)
* Had NO preloaded software from VZW or Moto, especially the non-removable variety

If you want extra brownie points, let me get my updates over the air straight from Google (The only company I trust to be timely with their updates). THEN you have a real winner on your hands!

I will buy one as soon as they launch WiFi only or if the 1-year subsidized price looks attractive. Personally I rather get a 4G MiFi device unless this will do hotspot, can’t remember the spec now.

Not interested in a data plan, so no. Additionally, Motorola can’t seem to make up their mind about whether or not we are going to get a big helping of blurry mess on it. So, no.

When you can buy a smokin’ hot laptop that can do everything and then some for the same money as todays best tablets there is no way in hell I would buy one. If it had the power, the memory, and the capabilities of a high end laptop in the same form as the tablets I would spend big bucks on it. Tablets = step backwards.

I don’t think tablets are meant to compete with laptops. And they shouldn’t. Tablets should compete with netbooks – cheap, simple, ultra-portable devices. Not a powerhorse, do-i-all descktop replacement device. But in order to be truly competitive tablets should be priced accordingly – $300-400 top. Top!

No thanks. I’ll continue to enjoy my Tegra2 Viewsonic G tablet (at half the estimated price of the Xoom), especially when Honeycomb gets ported to it within days of its release, thanks to the able and active development community over at XDA.

I can’t afford to pay $600-$800 for a computing type device that’s not actually a laptop. The other problem is paying $499, then paying monthly data, then being locked into it for 2 years. If the monthly data was like 2GB for both 3G and 4G for $20/month, I could possibly swing that. $499.99 with a $20/month 3G/4G data of 2GB, is the most that I could possibly pay all around.

Oh- one more thing. The iPad2 is prolly Jobs last effort (sorry bout that) and I bet it will blow the socks of this first Moto tablet. I love my Apple Touch and would consider a iPad2.

Yeah, other than the lower resolution screen, half the internal storage, half the RAM, lower resolution front cam, and lack of a rear cam. But yeah, pretty the same device.

FOR $200+ I can deal with the differences… and come on.. seriously.. the only REAL noticible diff will be in the RAM… and that you’ll have to use a docking station for HDMI out on the G-tab…
negligible diff of res with it being a 10″ screen.. and the 1.3mp camera is fine for video chatting, unless you’re planning on home porn..lol, more and you’re gonna cut down your band width to where it’ll interfere with the functionality… and i’m am so gonna laugh my a$$ off at anyone i see whipp one of these things out to take a pic or a video at over 2lbs THAT”S not gonna last long… my Droid X will suffice for any such endeavors..

Too many tabs coming out in the next 90 days. Impossible to do a cost/benefit analysis unitl the others come out. A price drop is inevitable. I am never an early adopter.

Why buy an expensive tablet when there is the multi function atrix which will do very similar things and is a phone at a subsidized price of $150? I want to carry fewer items that do more. The atrix will get me down to one device instead of three.

Because the atrix requires most people on this site to switch over to att which would cost a couple hundred then buy the phone for a few more and then the stand alone laptop attatchment for a couple more and your looking roughly at the cost of a new tab… not to mention no 4 g with att…

I like the idea of replacing all my gizmos with an atrix and a handful of dock. The xoom doesn’t seem to fit in there. Its a super sexy device though, I might use the atrix for big-screen TV and the xoom on my couch for whatever else.

If it could replace my laptop then I would buy one. But at $799 and all it will do is the same thing my phone will do, I say this is way over priced. I do not need another mobile device. I need to replace something. A person can only USE so many devices. I agree, the tablets are a better experience than a laptop, but it absolutly cannot replace it.

you should also put in the vote “will purchase when comes pre-installed with 4G” BC I have no intrest in buying one now just to have it upgraded to 4G later prob by some VZW rep making 10 bucks an hour screw it up. Ill just wait till it comes out of the box with 4G. Especially for the money I would be dropping on one.

I voted no. I was excited about the XOOM at first, but the lack of an entry level model is forcing me to wait until it’s cheaper or there are more options for pricing.

Yeah, and you’re comparing it to a tablet with lower screen resolution, lower front-facing camera resolution, no rear camera, half the RAM, and half the internal memory.Between those things, I would definitely be willing to pay more for the Xoom, not to mention the fact that it’s a Google Experience Device with vanilla Honeycomb out of the box.
