This is legit as I have an offer. I cannot imagine needing this unless I moved across the country and wanted to keep a local number for friends and relatives. Now if they would start allowing land-line portability they would have a stampede.(The loss of search revenues from the land-line companies, with a move like that, makes land-line portability bad for business.)

google stil scares me a little with their government affiliations, they seem to be encroaching on many markets in this capitalist economy with little to no governement pushback or interference. Google provides good services but i believe that they sell your data and are willing to share your information with the governement and other companies for profit. there is upside as they provide services that are normally reliable but the information thing scares me a little.

Actually, what this could allow you to do is, say, drop the phone completely and use Google voice on your tablet…though in the beginning I’m not sure if there would be enough “non carrier” coverage for it to work as a phone everywhere…but I see that changing over time…

Would you dump cell coverage if you could just carry around a tablet and be carrier free as long as you had coverage?

I use Google Voice service on my Blackberry which sounds like a bad decision of mine because there were lots of problems in it like SMS messages coming from 406 numbers even though I know that’s not the address of the sender.

Cannot port landline numbers to google voice.

Port time can be up to 24 hours if I remember correctly
