so we’re not getting any version of the atrix? to me, this seems like it’s supposed to be the etna, vzw’s version of the olympus which is the atrix (supposedly an exclusive to att, so they probably can’t have the same specs)

    • DBK

The Bionic wants a word with you…..

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RAXMLPAUMUA7V44J4ECFOIRD4E Annoying

blur = fail. never buying any non-stock android phones EVER

  • Ryan C

If you pause the video at 1:02, the build number starts with “etna-eng 2.2.1″ with the most important part being the word etna maybe? is this at all related to the Motorola Olympus? which was code named Etna. then further along it has “CES…test-keys”. so maybe this is the CES test demo version and isnt the finalized version..?
    What does anybody else think?

  • Dustin

Moto devices are like having a super hot girlfriend who’s wearing a chastity belt.

Except in this case TI means no wicked nvidia gpu. What a joke.

The device is butt ugly too… No dedicated camera button wtf

Screw moto and all they stand for, let them go choke on a wonton.

I’ll be buying an LG… Hell I may even dump verizon because I’m sick to death of paying out the ass for a great network with crap phones.

    /rant

    • Connor

Has tegra 2. people need to listen. he said that one has a TI. guessing he meant the cliq 2

  • Anonymous

It looks plain. I hope there will be more features when it come out.

  • chistian

ill wait for the nexus s to go to verizon

    • Connor

      not happening.

    NFC?

  • DROIDMANX

Im dissapointed with both the “Bionic” & The “Thunderbolt” as far as specs I See Nothing Special Enough To Make Me Get Rid Of My DX. And Im One Of Those Proplr That Upgrade All The Time If Its Worth It Even At FULL RETAIL PRICE. The Only 4G Phone Im Waiting On Is The Motorolo ETNA That Will Def Have A Tegra 2 Processor Front Facing Cam & Looks Like The DX, All These Other Phones Are A Waste Of Time.

    • Connor

Bionic has 4G LTE and Tegra 2. try again.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1840612817 Emanuel Jara

oh i didnt know that the DX had a tegra 2, front facing camera and 4G LTE….your DX must be special :D

    • Connor

oh and by the way. pause the video on the status screen…

      what does it say? ETNA.
actually watch the video before you make a stupid comment.

  • Ven727

has anyone else noticed that the Atrix and the Bionic blur looks very different? The Atrix looks like the old blur but Bionic looks redesigned.

    • Brendan

ya the bionic’s is sick but the atrix has cooler stuff on it, did you see that status bar!!!!!!!!! holy crap its like translucent!

  • Anonymous

You know what would make this epic? If they did COMPLETELY away with their terrible/tacky Motoblur skin.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_I7J4Z55BLI6W3OMFGRZZFNVLQA John

its still motoblur, all they changed was the launcher and the notification bar.

  • Anonymous

Did I hear him say it has the dual core TI processor in it and not the Tegra 2?

    • Connor

      its a tegra 2

  • Anonymous

Okay this is off topic but why is my droid x so slow at running youtube videos? My og droid would stream them fast, but it always seems like on my x video playback catches up to the streaming and it just pauses, loads another increment, attempts to play again and its a pain in the butt. Why is it like this.

  • Uppityowner

Since this phone won’t be released until the 2nd quarter of this year, here’s some advice for Motorola:

    1) Up the specs to match the Atrix on AT&T
    2) Add the laptop dock for the Droid Bionic
    3) DO NOT lock the bootloader
    4) Buy either ADW Launcher or LauncherPro and replace MotoBlur
    5) You can thank me by sending me a free Bionic before the actual launch date :)

    • Anonymous

Your #4 is a good fix for usability, but not performance. Blur is still on the phone. I put LauncherPro on my wife’s HTC and it lagged much worse then using the sense ui. However LP works great on my OG Droid. I think unless you install a custom ROM to remove Blur/Sense ui then you may have to except a performance hit when using another home app.

      • Tarsis Brito

Falcon there are a lot of roms that do not have blur and some that has a little bit of blur if you try apex 1.3 u can play with it using stimular u can use the blur or the apps that the hacker is offering try that rom u will love it it is so fast and it comes with adw launcher. This application that i bought its great it is call autokiller i highly recommend it.

        • Anonymous

I agree with apex 1.3, but requires you to root your phone. I was commenting on the phone as is. Maybe you should replace step #1 with “Root your phone”! LOL – However, for those who do not want to root, they are stuck with the “Blur Effect” when attempting use a new home app.

On a side note, I use autokiller and it seems to make a bigger difference as you use the phone more and more and your data builds up. Either way, it works.

    • Amu1

You do realize that the only “spec” that the Atrix has over the Droid Bionic is the 1GB of RAM right?

    • KhrizR/T

Im getting this phone for sure! im in love with it and hoepfully they dont lock the bootloader so UD can make sum awesome roms for this baby!

  • Jaironhoward

Keep in mind folks…. this thing isn’t slated to drop until 2ndQ… that being said… I’m sure the software will receive even more tweaks from now until then… we’re talkin possibly 5-6 months from today… THAT’S A LONG TIME!!! I’m thinkin this might be my next phone imho…

looks cool, but come on moto….launch w/ 2.2 that is going to suck balls. I have an upgrade available and curious if I should wait or get the DX….I still think waiting is best, but I got to see what they are going to charge for LTE

  • Wbdrummer

Do will my DX Blur look like that when i get Gingerbread or will it still look the same as it does with Froyo. Granted i am using LP+. New Blur is slightly……………………………….attractive (never thought i would say that)

I’m very disappointed, only one new phone? Only 512 megs of RAM? The My Touch from T-Mobile is way better!!! Lets get some quad scores going here, lets compare all the new phones.

omg why must they ruin these sexy phones with blur and the bootloader…………. so sadd

Does it seem a little thick? (Insert that’s what she said below)…but seriously is it just me or does it seem a little chubby?

    • Anonymous

      More for the pushin’…

  • B…droid

I am still unsure if this phone is a giant leap ahead of what is already available. I didn’t notice a drastic improvement in speed… from any of the transitions. Honestly seems extremely comparable to the X and Incredible. The one thing that will probably make this device stand out will be its gaming capabilities, but who really, really games on their phones much more than passing time while waiting at the doctor or BS ing at work?

One other thing… is it just me or are all new phones starting to look very similar? To me this thing lacks originality/style.

Plus 512 RAM is not ground breaking and neither is 16GB onboard storage.

    • DBK

It’s running Android 2.2 at the moment. When it gets 2.3 (which supports dual cores), then you will see the difference in speed (or it will be so fast you’ll miss it). :)

    • joker

Are you all really this dumb how in the world could you even say it didn’t seem snappy a 1 minute video and you think you know. Wait to real world scenerios and someone that will ahve the phone for more than a day. Second that was a demo phone and lastly it was a minute video how can you even tell lol

      • B…d droid

If you use an android phone daily then you can look and see that this is not a drastic difference in speed from most of the higher end devices that are available right now. There was lag from portrait to landscape as well as opening the dial pad screen camera lagged while being opened. It doesn’t take a phucking rocket scientist to see that.

As far as gingerbread supporting dual cores… this is news to me. I find it strange that if gingerbread were made to utilize dual cores then why did google release it on a single core sammy craptastic phone?

        • DBK

Uh…because they were testing it? When it is perfected and properly released, and there is still some lag, then you can bitch and whine. Until then…..STFU.

  • Richard

If any phone comes with blur or any other pos other than straight google… I will never buy it…

    • Joker

C-ya then cause 95 percent of phones wil have their own skin have fun with the nexus

  • Anonymous

This guy says it has a TI

and this video says it’s a Tegra

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eU5wyYas3Q0

These people need to get the specs together

    • Connor

if you listen you hear the guy asking if the processor is the same as the one over there. and he says no thats a TI. he was referring to the cliq 2 i assume. which uses a 1GHz TI OMAP processor. Bionic has T2 as confirmed by moto.

  • Afinchum24

The Verizon bias of this site is incredible (no pun intended) — AT&T announces a very similar phone (Moto, same processor, more onboard storage, and slightly smaller screen – so roughly equal) and there is virtually no sign of it on Droid-Life — ridiculous. AT&T getting such a phone and finally announcing some form of 4G is a bigger story than the next Droid X on Verizon (and I am a Sprint customer).

    • Anonymous

While your comment is valid… the site is droid-life (verizon marketing) not android although we do enjoy when they branch out…

    • http://twitter.com/ChrisJBatson Chris Batson

      Go to An.droid-life.com

this is DROID-life.com it reports most only the DROID family, which VZW carries. If you want to see the AT&T phones go to an.droid-life.com

    • Uncle paul

      umm yea….

  • Anonymous

Verizon needs to start coming harder and demanding out of this world specs. AT&T is going to start pushing android more now that their (exclusive) marriage with mr. jobs is coming to an end. Believe it or not there are still some misinformed people who like at&t network

  • Mr. Joe

    Great reporting Kellex!

  • Cbcstillmatic

So this is Verizon’s next Flagship yet half of the specs are wrong! It isn’t using the Tegra 2 when the video clearly states it had a TI processor and now it isn’t 1GB but 512MB. How did this happen when AT&T is getting the Atrix with 1GB of memory and a Tegra 2 processor along with the exclusive Webtop thing? Unless the Atrix specs are wrong to I am truly disappointed with both Verizon and Moto, this would barely be a worthy upgrade from my Droid X.

    • KleenDroid

Verizon does not always get the top of the line phones. Take for example the Nexus S, you would think it would be on Verizon which would sell more of them. In some cases, other carriers get better phones, even though Verizon may have the best network.

We get what Verizon tells us we are getting. Slap a Droid name on it and lock the bootloader….

      • Binglut9

The nexus is not a flagship phone

        • Tarsis Brito

verizon has to step up the games and have all the best phones coming to them because they have the best network and the best reputation like motorolla does as well. They just upgrading the front facing cam and the display which it will look nicer than the droid x. I was expecting more memory and to be slim as my adorable droid x it will be hard to change it

      • Petas

Verizon has the best selection of android phones, period.

        • Anonymous

That was true for awhile. Not sure if it is anymore. Today’s announced 4G phones would have made for a great Christmas season, but for early to mid-2011 releases … not so much

    • Connor

wrong, it has an AP20H Tegra 2 dual-core processor.

as per motorola’s official developer website.

      check for yourself. http://developer.motorola.com/products/droid-bionic/

  • kb

I’ll add to the sentiment that this puts the HTC Thunderbolt into question. Sure it’s the latest hotness but with the Bionic on the horizon, even if it is April, will people still bother?

That said, an HTC phone is very Root/ROM friendly and will still be a great phone, but if you want the crazy 3D graphics or Flash Acceleration then (unless the Thunderbolt has a dual core we don’t know about) we are going to have to wait.

Good job Motorola, I was all set to pull the trigger on the Thunderbolt (if it comes out quicker) but now….

  • Gregory

I think the blur is still ugly, but I like the new drawer and camera. The Dialer looks pretty bad :-/ Who cares, though, when there are so many custom Roms?!

    • Anonymous

      worlds better than current blur

    • http://twitter.com/ChrisJBatson Chris Batson

actually the Blur dialer is more functional than the stock.

  • DEEroid X

    Pretty sweet!

  • Flafire03

Can’t wait for a full demo that Moto rep wouldn’t answer any questions! Why show off a new phone and then not show what the hell it can do?

  • Anonymous

Just didn’t seem very “snappy”. Maybe it’s the motoblur, but it just seemed like the animation transitions were slow, and when he hit the phone app, it seemed to lag before the dial pad showed.

My guess is it’s the motoblur transition animations setting, but my OG Droid with custom kernel/ROM transitions much faster then what I saw on the video. Of course the apps themselves probably run a million times better then my OG Droid!

It’s going to be difficult to decide between the Thunderbolt and Bionic. Personally, I will probably go with the one that can more easily be rooted and have a custom ROM/Kernel.

    • Joker

The bionic can hook up to the dock if you did a little research you would know. Second how can you tell it didn’t seem snappy they didn’t even do anything with it? opened the app drawer for asecond opened the camera for a second I dont understand why all these people are saying it didn’t look snappy and what real world testing was done. He was just showing the phone off. So I dont think its fair to assess this phone yet without any real hands on time. Meaning more than a day or so. Plus the model he has probably just a demo you know how those are

      • Anonymous

First – what did the dock have to do with anything I said? Honestly, I assumed there would be a dock. I merely mentioned the transition animations didn’t seem snappy, and I don’t think I need to do research to make an observation about what I see.

Second, if you read my post in full before flying off the handle maybe you would have noticed I mentioned that the apps would probably run a million times better. I believe that is where you will see the dual-core difference.

The fact is I can follow the video, do what he does and do it faster. Mostly because I used the spare parts app to speed up my transition animations. I’m not downing the phone but for some reason you think I did and took it quite personally. I DON’T like Blur. That is my opinion and I’m entitled to it.

If you love moto and dying for the Bionic, that’s fine by me. It seems pretty awesome. If you love HTC and can’t wait for the Thunderbolt – good for you. It seems pretty awesome, too.

I just love enjoying all this tech no matter who makes it.

        • DBK

You do also realize it’s running Froyo and not Gingerbread……yet.

          • Anonymous

Of course – which is why right now it is a fair comparison with the excpetion of rooted vs stock – Froyo to Froyo. If one phone had Gingerbread and the other didn’t, it would be like comparing apples to oranges… or Froyo to Gingerbread. ;)

        • tommytmt

Agreed, I HATE motoblur!!! I have the D2 and it took what feels like forever to finally remove all traces of it.

      • Anonymous

Actually if YOU did some research, you’d know that the Bionic doesn’t have those accessories and the webtop feature. They’re exclusive to the Atrix.

And if you couldn’t see the lack of ‘snap’ just by going around the home screens and such, you’re blind or in denial.

Also, this phone is just about as thick as an og droid but without the keyboard, which is ridiculous.

I don’t understand why Verizon are such cheap bastards and can’t manage to actually pick up some good phones for their network like AT&T does.

        • joker

Really because on endgaget they did a video and the guy clearly states the bionic has the ability to hook up to the dock buddy, Next your going to say that your not impressed by a one minute video? What do you want the screen to do make the phone fly? I am not in denial I am just not going to sit here and make things up are you watching the video its one minute long really your going to form you opinion on a demo phone that is one minute long really really I forgot just how smart you are and instead of whining why not go to att dork

        • Joooky

The NVidia Tegra 2 chip is far superior when it comes to processing HD quality graphics. So far there hasn’t been any comparisons on the actual performance of these phones so as far as I am concerned it’s all just speculation. The snapdragon has been a proven chip for performance, but I think everyone needs to just relax until the Tegra 2 has been put through the same tests. NVidia had a demo of a pre-release Tegra 2 at their convention back in October or thereabouts if you want to catch up on their new chip. Read UP skeptics http://www.nvidia.com/object/tegra-2.html

    • tommytmt

Falcon34…every smartphone under the sun takes a few moments to open up apk’s like dialer, SMS and others when you open them for the first time since you’ve started up your phone…EVERY ONE, and don’t say “my phone doesn’t” because I know it wont be true.

      • Anonymous

HAHAHAHA!!! I think you should read my response to Joker below. I think it might apply to you as well.

  • Stu

doesn’t look any faster than my Rooted DX…..sure these phones are going to fly, but when will we acutally see the power of these phones on a day to day basis? 4G would be nice, but my DX is flying as it is, and really dont need anything else. I will be holding on to this phone for a while until something completely new and different comes out.

    • Anonymous

people don’t understand that you need multi threaded programs that utilize multicore processors otherwise there is no difference in speed.. since Android doesn’t even support multicores, I don’t see upcoming speed improvements at all.. but will still seek a dual core phone for the obsoleteness

      • Knightcrusader

Not true. The OS can run an application on one core while running system processes on another, so there will be a speed up there. Or, if multi-tasking, one program will get one core and the other gets the second one.

As for multicore support, my GTablet running 2.2 is set up for multicore support already, from what I’ve read on XDA.

      • Anonymous

Froyo and earlier dont support multiple cores since they didnt exist, im about 99% sure gingerbread has support for multiple cores, if it doesnt why else would all of the new phones have dual cores?

    • Anonymous

Looked like the homescreen was faster than stock motoblur on the DX. It definitely looks better than the current motoblur too. I still wish there were a way(stock) to disable it all together though.

In reply to Aberry, Android 2.2.1 is what it’s running. That OS doesn’t support multiple cores. Future releases of Android are rumored(and why not believable) to support multiple core processors. You would see a pretty big improvement just with that.

      • Jack

I can’t really say one way or another, as I can only report what I’ve heard, but Moto has reportedly made some “custom changes” to the software in order to take advantage of the dual cores.

With Android being an open source system, and Motorola most definitely having the know-how, there’s not reason not to believe that.

      • Anonymous

I’m pretty sure that Gingerbread has support for multicore CPUs. Which begs the question why this phone isn’t launching with it…

And was there any word on a locked bootloader or not? I’m assuming that it will be locked (and thus useless to me) but we can hope…

        • Spyderman89460

Let’s hope and pray that the bootloader isnt locked… maybe Moto learned from the DX and D2… but then again it wouldn’t surprise me if it is… and thus the reason why the D1 is still champion of Moto’s DROID series :-)

    • Dean2359

I agree,i wasn’t impressed with the speed either. Im waiting for the new LG with the Nove screen. I really hope that comes to verizon

    • http://twitter.com/pmaroke paul

same with my incredible. i want something three times as fast. ill just wait for that.

“Uhh yes, give me the Droid Bionic, and uhh the Motorola XOOM tablet, to go please.” – me
“Do you want me to Supersize you life’s enjoyment for free?” – Verizon
    “Yes, please!”
    “Enjoy!” – Verizon

By “Free” they mean you forgot to listen to the hushed talk from the micro machines guy that said you had to forfet you Soul. Muahahaha

      • DBK

lol That’s what the iCrap costs. Verizon just want an arm, a leg, and your first-born. :P

        • Bigrob60

Aww man. Now I HAVE to have a child just to get this phone. Of course 9 months from now something else will be out. HMMM! Decisions Decisions.

  • Mrhug3

Yesterday I said the 512mb killed it for me….. I was playing hard to get. Today I’m in lust. I want it now.

    • Anonymous

Hahaha – nice Mrhug3. I feel similar in that my hopes were raised for 1gig, then let down by the 512mb, then reason set in as I know 512mb should be enough for a while.

I do feel at some point the RAM is going to have to be addressed. As processors get faster, the 512mb of RAM is eventually going to bottle neck your flow of information.

For now I’m happy with the hardware that is coming out soon.

  • Dmbatcofc

Didn’t want to have to wait until April :-/

  • Bigrob60

I’m gonna wait ’till CES is over and maybe untill we get some more indepth hands on & unboxing from Kellex before I choose my next phone. I will say I am leaning toward LG b/c of my track record w/ them but we shall see.
