How to: Root the DROID X Using Universal Androot

Universal Androot is one of the newer 1-click methods to rooting a whole lineup of devices and one of them happens to be the Droid X.  We had been holding out a little on posting this until there were methods available for creating backups using something like Clockwork Recovery and since Koush just released that option, it was time.  This is also great timing for the 2.2 ROM that is supposed to be released today…

*Note 1* – THIS NEEDS TO BE DONE BEFORE UPDATING TO ANDROID 2.2.  THIS METHOD DOES NOT CURRENTLY WORK ON DROID X FROYO.

Instructions…

*Warning* – Just a reminder that rooting VOIDS your warranty and could potentially do permanent damage to your device.  This is not a recommended practice and you do so at your own risk.

1.  Download and install Universal Androot to your Droid X:  Download Link (alt link)
2.  Open it and tap the “Root :-)” button.

3.  Your phone will now run through a series of commands.

4.  When it finishes, it will tell you that you are rooted.

5.  Reboot your phone and BAM!  Rooted Droid X.

Let us know if you run into any issues!

Unrooting and backup instructions plus Droid X 2.2 ROM on the way!

Cheers Wade!

thank you all, from a very smart cookie, who is learning new tricks ! That has made my life simpler, and now i can begin to really learn this os …. I used this and have had a only a few lags, my question is… with what I read on the other forums, is using titanium back up enough or do i need to back up this another way ?

I had to do this in order to get root after i went from 2.1 to 2.2. (Credit to Alldroid,Rainabba and Birdman)

    1.Run “adb shell”
    2.Run “/system/xbin/su”
3.Watch your screen for Superuser app to prompt for permission and click “allow”
    4.Run “mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/system /system”
    5.Run “cp /system/xbin/su /system/bin/su”
    6.Run “chmod 4755 /system/bin/su”
7.Open the SuperUser application on the phone (app launcher) and make sure that “superuser” isn't listed and denied. If so, “forget it” and return to step 2. If you can't find SuperUser, it's not installed and you should download from this posts attachments and “adb install Superuser.apk”
    8.[optional] Run “mount -o remount,ro /dev/block/system /system”

Uhmmm this is a Droid website.. lol jk :-)

  • francomur99

Hi does it work on Hero 1.5 GSM on 3 Uk Network? and IF YES- after the root… once I will install Froyo 2.2…what is going to happen to Skype and Spotify, Bluetooth and Wifi? will they work without problem? I will appreciate if anyone have an answer. Many thanks

  • http://twitter.com/kirilv Kiril

universal androot does indeed work on droid 1 with froyo frg01b

  • Droidx

After you update to 2.2 and you were already rotted can you use the app to unroot because i might need to on the droid x

  • Dmota25

hI..now have a Problem Booting My Droid x With Froyo

  • Yzx

I did this and after froyo getting $su …. permission denied

  • Sol Wgn

When it works on the DX with 2.2 I will be interested. I guess I updated too fast… SUCKS, I miss root.

  • Jerry Barrett

If an X is rooted prior to updating to the current 2.2 leak will the phone maintain root?

  • LT

had Easy Root, then ran Universal Androot but unroot then root and it works but is not as smoothly flowing as easy root was for rooted apps, for all those wondering

  • KEITHSMNR

Lot's of questions here and no answers…

  • http://twitter.com/rrrrryyyyy Ryan Nabat

Is this any different than easy root?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1684329785 Zach Chen

wait so should we all just wait for the official ota update to froyo then root with this androot thing?

    • Drummer62

*Note 1* – THIS NEEDS TO BE DONE BEFORE UPDATING TO ANDROID 2.2. THIS METHOD DOES NOT CURRENTLY WORK ON DROID X FROYO.

  • Brandschnizzle

Does this work any better than Easy Root or what?

  • Djspikezz

Well I lost root. I missed the step of rooting before updating to 2.2 I was using Easy Root. It doesn't support 2.2… So Im guessing now I have to wait for root to be made available for froyo? :(

    • Steveninspokane

I am using 2.2, and easyroot worked for me just fine.

      • Steveninspokane

Scratch that, you are on Dx, I am on D1.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shannon-C-Kerr/827781725 Shannon C. Kerr

Wade, you said “Unrooting and backup instructions plus Droid X 2.2 ROM on the way!”

Does the “UnRoot” button in Androot not work? The unroot button in easyroot works fine on my Droid1. Just curious.

  • Crazy Ferris

Please excuse me if this sounds like a “not so smart” question, but what benefit is there to rooting the DX now?

    • NKTIzzle

Wifi tethering (sans paying for it)
SetCPU (for underclocking to preserve battery)
      Bloatware removal

  • Papasmurf0052

    thank you

  • El El Kool J

Warning labels are posted on everything harmful…has that stopped any of us from doing it? :P

  • Psmiddy17

Is the Moto Droid 1 running 2.2 one of the devices this app supports? I know it says a “whole lineup” of devices so I am curious.

    Thanks

  • n0m0n

OK I am really starting to get confused here.
Easy Root wasn't that the same thing?
And if not whats the difference?

I rooted with Easy Root should I un-root and try this instead?

    Thanks

  • bobalay

WTF! The DX came out 2 months after the DInc and it has Froyo goodness, Really Big Red WTF! Where's DInc's OTA.

    • Neo1738

umm i think you're confused. This is not the official Droid X Froyo this is a ROM someone came up with that works on the Droid X. There is still no official Froyo for the Droid X

  • KEITHSMNR

Does this application work for the Droid as well?

  • JosueD

    Awesome, Droid X Rooted!

    [JD]

  • Jwizzy

Looks like that app lets you select between superuser apps you want to install? If so, do yourself a favor and steer clear or 2.2. People experience problems with that version on the D1 at least.

    • Jwizzy

      of*

  • Ace Z.

Jesus…I'm kicking myself in the ass for returning my DROID X!!! FAK!!!!!

    • JosueD

      Lmao… =P

  • Mbentleychp

If you have already used easy root can you use this rooting method without issues. Example, unroot using this method after you have rooted with easy root. Also, is there any difference between the two?

  • mattyboy1013

seems like the easiest way out there. thanks kellex!

  • http://www.facebook.com/drossano Dean Phillip Rossano Jr.

Waiting with bated breath for that 2.2 guide

  • Timmah

Here is the update.zip for Froyo for Droid X.

THIS IS NOT TESTED BY ME, OR MAYBE A FEW PEOPLE. I TAKE NO REPOSIBILTY WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR DEVICE IF YOU TRY THIS.

    • Dspadeking

Followed the link said it was deleted or remove got a different link?

  • Independent8078

Kellex have you tried this yet?

  • possomcrast1

the update.zip is out for droid x 2.2

    • Timmah

      Not yet it isn't…

  • Shawn

Does this work for Droid 2?

    • Timmah

How to: Root the DROID X <—

      • WhereIsTony

But often in algebra X=2, so who knows. ;-)

        • Shawn

thanks for sticking up for me!

      • jwb

I'm sure he can read. It's still a legit question. With so few of us having Droid 2's, we'll probably have to hope Droid X methods will work.

        • Timmah

Could work…But if it says for Droid X, I”m guessing it is 100% working ONLY for the Droid X.

          • Rizzidy

            Horrible assumption.

          • Timmah

Horrible understand. I'm saying we know it 100% works for Droid X and we dont know about other devices.

    • Maizekid

The picture shows android 2.0 to 2.2 so it may.

    • Jdon285

No go on Droid 2, I tried just for giggles. Not sure it will ever be rooted. Seems like there is a game going on between developer and moto. I just wish it was rooted to get all of the BLOATWARE off.

      • jwb

Thanks for giving it a shot. We'll get root, just might take some time since very few developers are looking into it.

  • Timmah

    First

    • Oo3rex

damn, missed it by that much..

      • Timmah

        Hahah maybe next time. xD

    • Timoh

Cool but isn't it kind of a coincidence that it's “leaked” at the same time custom roms are on the way?

      • Timmah

It is a custom rom.. xD
It isn't the official official official Froyo for the Droid X. Im guessing it has Root, and everything built in. :)

        • Jijwoifjoidsf

no it doesnt have root built in…. DX
