DROID 2 Hits Packaging Plant!

We’re just going to go ahead and call today the official day of Droid 2 leaks. Engadget just received these photos of what appears to be the Droid 2 in full-on packaging mode.

So when can we expect this updated version of our baby? August. That’s all we can tell you. The rest of the dates out there are just rumors at this time. OK, that was cheap, we love rumors! August 23rd is still the date that gets tossed around the most, I’m just having a hard time believing in a Monday launch date. Who knows though right?

Anyone still interested in the D2? The look is really nice and much improved from the D1, but the rumored specs so far aren’t really. If they release this phone for $199 on contract, I’m going to be a little surprised.

Basically, it's a test measuring the accuracy that the Droid 1's screen can interpret input data from finger pressure, when compared to iPhone 3Gs, Droid Eris, and N1. The D1 has much worse results than the other phones, and it's my biggest gripe about the phone because I consistently notice it.

Thanks to everyone for your comments so far. We understand that some of frustrations come with the speed at which new Android updates are being pushed out to our handsets. Motorola has recently published a timeline for software upgrades here: https://supportforums.motorola.com/community/ma…. Upgrades do take time, and we hope to explain that in more depth in a later blog post. In the meantime, please monitor this web page for more information.

Also, I've seen statements that indicate people believe that the Milestone is the only secured Android handset or that all Motorola Android handsets in the US are not secured. Neither of these is correct. Motorola has announced nine different Android handsets under twelve different names (http://developer.motorola.com/products/). I'm trying to confirm this, but I believe the Droid is the only one of these nine handsets to boot unsigned images. Now, I don't expect this news to win over a bunch of new fans, but I did want to make more correct information available.

I origianlly wanted this for the keyboard but when i found out the X had so many MANY more and better features i picked up that bad boy, and fell inlove with swype and the voice text feature…. dont waste your time with this when you can get a better phone right now

That bottom edge looks more like the original Droid than the more sloped Droid 2.

Or is there another fix for it that I'm not aware of? It drives me crazy on mine (but doesn't seem to be nearly as bad on my GFs? We both use screen protectors)

I'm not sure I understand people's logic for thinking the should be priced below $199. 1. Not everyone wants a 4.3″ device. 2. Some people want a physical keyboard, so your choices are this, the D1, or the Ally. (obvious choice)

It'll be $199 on a 2-year, and people will pay it. They're not targeting D1 owners with this, they're targeting everyone else, who will actually be eligible for upgrade (via NE2 or Annual Upgrade). I'll likely grab one of these via Annual Upgrade, to move over to Android from my Touch Pro2. I guarantee I won't be the only one either.

PS – This will also set me up for Annual Upgrade again in August 2011, when there should be a decent selection of LTE devices available, or on the horizon.

$199 is good for this phone… what u dont realize is $199 is a steal for the droid X.. that phone is priced to low.

Should still be an awesome phone, but no reason to upgrade from Droid 1. I will wait till Xmas time and see what's new, if nothing exciting I will wait till my contract is up. I may be one of the few who isn't dissatisfied with the Droid 2. It looks like they improved the things that bothered us about the 1st model and gave it a faster processer. I love that they stuck with the same size as the X is just too big to carry for me. Of course not being able to root it I know has alienated some.
Give me the 2.2 update already tho

Not such an attractive upgrade to the tech geeks, I am afraid. I for one like to have something visibly new as well as technically superior in my upgrades. Hell, thats why I upgrade every year (or less).

By the way, does everyone realize that the 1 year contract price is only $69 more on the Droid X vs 2 year? If you are a super-geek like me, that is the way to go.

Especially since within the first year you can still sell your current phone for its original cost, or more, than it was on contract. I sold my Droid 1 for $75 more than I paid for it last October/November which covered the replacement cost of the Droid X. Had TONS of interest on Craigslist too – and my Droid was scratched up (not the screen).

Unless this is rootable and ROMable, there is no reason to go to it at all.

Many people echo your position. I went the rooting route on Droid 1 and found it to be periodically unstable which as a hobbyist is not a big deal, but I use it for business and it hurt me a couple of times so I can care less at this point.

I must confess, I am missing the exitement over here? Besides the keyboard is there any reason to choose this over the X or the Incredible?

I will only get this if they have a rare deal like Trade in your Droid 1 for a Droid 2. Unless something like that happens I'm still going to try to sell my Droid 1 and get the Droid X.

if ur into plain vanilla android, this is the phone to get. Sense UI is growing on me and I enjoy using the sense widgets…but it's nice to have alternative launchers to mix it up.
