If anyone needs their DROID Eris unlocked after all these years, you can now do so at the HTCDev.com site. Whether you are into HTC phones or not, the fact that they are going back this far to allow a phone to be unlockable is impressive, to say the least. Motorola and their “developer edition” failure of a phone cannot compare to the stellar work that this company continues to do for the developer communities.
Doin’ big things. After giving the Incredible 2, Rezound and Thunderbolt access to their bootloader unlocking tool, HTC has gone way back in time, giving the original Incredible the same access. That’s right, a device pre-DROID X and DROID 2 now has an unlockable bootloader.
And again, we turn to you, Motorola.

Now that HTC has unlocked the Rezound’s bootloader, you can be sure that we are going to see a huge influx of developer support for this beastly device. It’s only been a few days and we can already find a few ROMs that will definitely interest Rezound owners, including ones that will take away HTC’s Sense skin completely, remove the Verizon bloatware, and plenty of other great tweaks.
We have been able to locate a handful of flashable ROMs over at RootzWiki – you can see the entire list here.
Cheers Franky J!
HTC, after announcing that all of their phones released after September of this year would have unlockable bootloaders, has updated their dev site to reflect that statement. Oh but wait, they went even deeper than that and even included the Thunderbolt and Incredible 2, two devices released long before September. Talk about making a statement to both the developer crowd and other manufacturers in the game.
We were led to believe that this was all up to the carriers, but HTC seems to have either found a way around that, doesn’t care what the carrier’s think, or produced a carrier accepted bootloader unlocking tool that everyone is willing to accept. No matter what, we are loving it.
I think all that’s left to be said now is, ”Doesn’t Motorola owe us an explanation?” A solution? Something?
And go get yourself unlocked if you haven’t already at HTCDev.com.
Cheers to everyone who sent this in!
Ater finding out that the bootloader of the HTC Rezound could be unlocked using HTCDev’s bootloader unlock tool, our initial reaction was to think that this was a mistake and that it would be fixed shortly. Boy was that reaction wrong, and in a good way. HTC has updated their developer site with the following comment:
All HTC Android devices launched after September 2011 are unlockable. The website will be updated accordingly to reflect this in the coming weeks. We continue to work on models launched prior to September 2011, please check back often for the status of older devices.
So not only was it not a mistake for the Rezound to be unlockable, but going forward, every single HTC device will join the party. That’s a big deal, folks. If only we knew what was on the horizon as far as HTC devices go on Verizon. Well, we sort of have an idea: the Fireball.
But wait, didn’t Motorola blame Verizon for forcing them into locking bootloaders on the RAZR and every other device from them over the last year? Indeed they did. I wonder if we can talk HTC into teaching Motorola how to grow a pair?
HTC Rezound owners, get your butts over to HTCDev.com immediately before this gets shut down.
According to a variety of forums, the Rezound’s bootloader can be unlocked using the tools provided at HTCDev. You are left with S-ON afterwards, but to my knowledge, that’s the way all HTC unlocked phones are left after using these tools.
It should be noted that you won’t find the Rezound listed as a compatible device, but if you follow all of the instructions laid out, your phone will indeed get the unlock treatment.

Users can now use the HTC site to unlock their HTC EVO 3D. Usually you would not hear us say this but, “This isn’t fair!” Motorola needs to be looking at this and start taking some serious notes. Looks like we were right about our previous assumption that the EVO 3D would be next, followed by T-Mobiles U.S. Sensation 4G. Lucky, punks.
At the first sign of a Verizon HTC device being unlocked, you will all be the first to know, and we will have a wonderful celebration. Anybody here own an EVO 3D? Time to unlock the beast?
Looks like HTC has become everyone’s favorite manufacturer starting today. They have begun the unlocking process for their devices, beginning with the European Sensation. Looking at their site, it looks as though we can maybe expect the HTC Evo 3D on Sprint next, followed by the Sensation 4G for T-Mobile? No Verizon love yet? Guess we will have to show a bit more patience. (more…)
