Custom ROM Friday: Shiny ROM for Verizon Galaxy Nexus

galaxy nexus verizon

Since the departure of Pete Alfonso and updates to his Bugless Beast ROM, folks have been on the search for a new minimal, stock AOSP build that brings smooth operation and vanilla Android feel. We received a few requests to make sure everyone new about a somewhat newcomer to the custom ROM scene called, Shiny

The developer has been building multiple ROM’s from source, but this is his first published work for the toro Galaxy Nexus. It brings a complete OTA feel to the device, running Android 4.2.2. What will make this different from your stock firmware though is the replacement of the stock browser app with Google Chrome, the ROM is deodexed, comes with custom reboot options in the power menu, and more.

Features:

  • Stock Android 4.2.2, build JDQ39
  • Source (AOSP) built kernel (boot.img)
  • Deodexed
  • Easily rootable (see information below)
  • G-Apps (GMail, Play Store, etc.) included in build along with Nexus apps
  • Stock browser replaced with Google Chrome
  • Shiny restart options
  • 4.2 wallpapers and sounds included
  • Updated frequently
  • Everything works!

If you are not for all of the crazy aesthetic changes that some ROMs bring and you just want a smooth operator (shout out to Sade), then check out Shiny.

For instructions on flashing and finding downloads, head on over to the forum thread by following the via below.

Cheers JaronDW!

  • Brenden Keene

I’ve been running Shiny for a couple weeks now… love it!

  • sk3litor

Was kinda skeptical at first cuz I like features (I mean come on, this IS android and all) but then reading the op on rootz all the features I like are in the form of mods. So I must say shiny ftw. Plus lmt launcher (I love pie). all hail the android community

  • Ibrick

You should re-name this from ‘Custom ROM Friday’ to ‘Whatever’s the GNex Flavor of the Week’

Kinda pointless to even mention CM 10/10.1 are booting, w/ full data, voice on the DNA. Much more impressive IMO than changing 2% of 4.2.2 and calling it something else.

  • http://twitter.com/jutley Justin S

Add me to the list of happy Shiny ROM users. I had been using BB since the OG and hesitated switching, but and VERY happy with how fast and smooth Shiny is!

  • elemeno

Can someone give a short explanation to what running a custom kernel does? Or a link to a tutorial?

  • Jim McClain

Still waiting bamf for 4.2.2 they never release one that has bugs, so i’m on 4.1.2 and holding

  • OLDCEDAWG

I made the switch from Bugless Beast to Shiny 12-7-2012. This is the fastest, smoothest, bug free Rom I have run and that goes back to the OG. The developer is a great guy and works hard to answer question and help all that come to this rom.

  • Harsh Karn

How could any ROM be better than CM, AOKP and PA (or their mixture)?

  • Cowboydroid

Also would enjoy a custom mod to have more lockscreen targets, like in Carbon…if any qualified individual s interested in making one…

  • Matthew O’Sullivan

    Shiny FTW!!!!

  • Cowboydroid

I’m not seeing the reboot options in this version of the ROM. They were in the previous 4.2.1 version.

    • Evan Whitaker

Touch and hold “Power Off” when you get there. The options pop up then.

      • Cowboydroid

        Oh thank God!

  • ddevito

Pete Alfonso. Me and my GNex miss you.

  • ddevito

This ROM sucks. Lags all the time, ESPECIALLY when the phone downloads something or when a message is incoming.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ryan-Lawrence/1296216206 Ryan Lawrence

Been using this ROM since BB stopped updating – And it is exactly as promised! A stock feeling, very stable, very smooth, and constantly updated ROM. Keeps my Verizon GNex fresh!

  • haproot

I will try this! Been using BB but need an update to 4.2

  • Chris Wilkey

JDX, used to be Jelly Belly, is very good as well.

I don’t want to be spamming the comments (because I know I have posted this comment before) but I would love to see next Friday’s Custom ROM post (or any other day for that matter) be about how to flash and save and load all app data. I got a slight response back last time I posted this comment so I know there are some people out there who are interested. I love DL with a passion, so I don’t mean to spam – if anyone could help the few people out who are interested, that would be fantastic! [Here is my previous comment from last week]:

I am not a n00b at flashing roms, but I would like an easier, newer step by step instructions. When I flash a new rom, I create a Titanium Backup of everything, create a system backup, then flash the rom (unzip rom & gapps) then have to reload Titanium Backup save. I always get confused trying to reload the Titanium Backup because I don’t know if the options I’m choosing are loading back in my app save data or are replacing the rom update I just went through. Not to mention that this process takes about an hour to complete.

Any way to make it easier or faster? What process do you guys go through to update and flash new roms but have all your app data save and restore? Thanks!

    • PhoenixPath

      Skip Titanium.

You can restore apps in Titanium from your nandroid. You’re basically backing everything up twice.

Run a nandroid, flash the rom, install titanium, restore all missing apps.

In Titanium, hit menu – restore from nandroid – select missing apps. Missing apps appeared with yellow dots on the side last time I used it if I am not mistaken.

CM10.1 flashes over itself decently enough so I actually haven’t had to do this in quite a while.

      • http://geniousatplay.blogspot.com/ Bikram Agarwal

Thought about “You’re basically backing everything up twice” for couple of minutes. Technically you are right. But I still need to run backups using TiBu. I run Nandroid only when I’m flashing a ROM – which is once in 2-3 months. But in the meantime, to have a latest backup of all my app data, I need to run weekly TiBu backup.

  • Matthew Wahlquist

Bugless driver since day 1 og droid. This is a first heard for me on Shiny. Downloading now and thanks for the heads up!

  • Bigwavedave25

    Well deserved recognition! Congratulations!
Baldwinguy77 is one of the nicest dev’s I have ever delt with, for sure.

  • David Inman

    Well deserved baldwinguy77.

    inmanster

  • Steve Benson

Really great to see balwinguy77 get some recognition for working his ass off for us Gnex users. Best dev I’ve been associated with in quite some time.

  • chanstar

SHINY!! Makes all of us VZ owners happy!!

  • jared leboeuf

baldwinguy77 definitely deserves recognition for this ROM. Shiny picked up where BB left off and took it running! For a long time now, Shiny has been a goto ROM for me on my VZW GNex. Great work baldwinguy77 and congrats!

  • David Verba

Agreed, best ROM out there – coupled with Tiny – it’s the true BEAST

    • http://www.facebook.com/charlieunguyen Charlie U. Nguyen

What’s Tiny? Just flashed Shiny from Carbon. So smooth!

      • David Verba

        Tinykernel

  • http://www.thecarners.com Matt R Carner

Great recommendation! Been on Shiny since the RootzWiki debut (former BB user here) and have been thrilled with it. Great work baldwinguy77!

  • http://brgulker.wordpress.com/ brgulker

Can anyone speak to battery life compared to CM10.1?

    • jared leboeuf

I regularly switched between CM10.1 and Shiny. The battery life is comparable, with a slight edge going to Shiny, in my experience.

    • http://twitter.com/Skitz_Marz Skittlez

my battery life blows on shiny right now, but i experienced that with both this ROM and Muzzy. I hear CM is great for battery, but i love the smoothness of shiny too much to switch

  • Dollyllama

I really WANT to like Google Chrome as a browser. This is not a troll post. I actually DO like chrome on a PC, just not as much as firefox. On Android, however, I prefer the stock browser hands down. I like to go to NFL.com and espn.com, for example and be able to watch the videos which are usually flash-based. I find that on both my Xoom and my G-Nex, the stock browser is much faster than Chrome, although I like the “look” of chrome better.

    Any thoughts?

    • http://twitter.com/Skitz_Marz Skittlez

didn’t they stop flash support in 4.1 or 4.2?

    • duke69111

I love the stock android browser as well. I use chrome on my pc, but just cant get used to it on my phone. There is a mod for the shiny rom that adds the stock browser and the bookmark sync file.

  • ERIC REED

I need some help for my Verizon GNex. My SIM card reader needs replaced and I have looked all over the Internet to try and find a replacement. If anyone has any info I would really appreciate it.

P.S. Be careful using SIM card adapters, that is how mine got damaged.

  • baldwinguy77

Hey everyone! Baldwinguy77 here, I just had to make sure I stopped by to give a HUGE thanks to Droid-Life and all of the Shiny users who stopped by to recommend Shiny for Custom ROM Friday. I’ve been following this site since I first got the OG droid a few years ago, and I’m extremely honored to be featured on here, what I (and many others) consider to be the pinnacle of Android news. Thanks again, and keep up the amazing, exceptional work here on Droid-Life.

P.S. Everyone is always welcome over at the RootzWiki thread! If you have any questions feel free to go post them there or PM me! Enjoy! :)

    • JaronDW

Congrats baldwinguy77! We really appreciate you work on this rom.

    • http://twitter.com/Bhockey77 Court

While I just changed to the new monthly I’m a HUGE fan of the Shiny ROMS and plan on going back once I feel like wiping. Had been on it since November and I miss it.

Everyone else: Baldwin is great and actually responds w/out being a dick (unlike some devs)

    • chanstar

      Thanks for all you do!!

    • qwopzxnm

Count me as another long time user of this great ROM.

    • EvanTheGamer

      You’re awesome, my friend!

Shiny is the best thing to happen to Android since…uhh…sliced bread? Wait, no..Bugless Beast, yes…that’s the ticket! The Golden Ticket!

    • http://www.facebook.com/jimwilsoniv Jim Wilson

Awesome ROM! Can you make it available on goo.im so we can get alerts for all the new updates?

      • baldwinguy77

I’ll look into getting that done ASAP :)

    • Drooooid

You really do make the best/smoothest ROM for the nexus!

    • http://twitter.com/norsedakotan Chris Peterson

Yes you deserve some praise, love Shiny! Keep up the great work!

    • http://twitter.com/canoy07 Eric G Canoy

@36f9b312bc73db9043395eacbb7059e7:disqus would you mind showing a video tutorial, even if it would be a short one, of Shiny?

    • William_Morris

Very much enjoy your creation here, sir.

    • Dan

any chance this will be available for maguro?

  • Nick

I installed Shiny on my Nexus about 3 hours ago, but can’t seem to find the custom reboot options in the power menu.

Am I looking in the wrong spot?

    • Nick

      Nevermind!

      (Long press “Power Off”)

    • baldwinguy77

When you bring up the power menu, LONG press on “Power Off,” and they should come right up :)

      • Nick

        Thanks man!

        I love your ROM.

    • theentropic

When you get the stock Power/Airplane Mode/Volume popup, long press on “Power Off” to get the custom reboot options.

  • relbueno

    Maguro please…

  • Evan Whitaker

Love this rom. Been using it for a couple of weeks. Zero problems. Always updates smoothly.

  • http://twitter.com/MJMoze Matt M

I have what is likely a stupid question regarding flashing ROMs on the G-Nex. Since there is no SD card, when you wipe data on the internal storage before flashing a ROM, wouldn’t you also be erasing the .ZIP file you need to flash the new rom?

    • http://twitter.com/MJMoze Matt M

BTW..I’m unlocked, rooted, stock 4.2.2 (from the release earlier this week)

      • snowblind64

If you’re coming from stock you don’t need to do a full wipe. Just wipe the cache, dalvic, and system. Then install the ROM.

      • Steve Benson

No, your custom recovery will not erase your “SD” partition.

        • http://twitter.com/MJMoze Matt M

          Got it..thanks!

      • http://twitter.com/turdbogls Turdbogls

YES, so dont do that……there is no need to wipe the internal storage when flashing a ROM. the only thing you need to wipe is cache, dalvik cache, and system. if you are using TWRP, 99.9% of the time the “factory reset” option is sufficient enough to give you a “clean” install. i have been doing that for the past year with nary an issue.

    • sk3litor

Your custom recovery (cwm; twrp) protects every thing on your internal storage. I believe there are other options in recovery to wipe internal storage of you should ever choose to do so

      • http://twitter.com/MJMoze Matt M

So what is getting wiped when I “wipe data”? Just all app data? Or am I also losing pictures, videos, SMS, MMS, etc…

        • sk3litor

Well all your pictures and vids and most apps will be restored by Google. There are other backup options such as titanium backup and carbon to backup data and sms and call history and things like that

          • duke69111

The only pics that I know of that are restored by google are the ones in the picasa web albums.

          • sk3litor

Actually you might be correct but i think they get saved in the the gallery apk in gapps. I’ve been using the same gapps for a while now. All I know is I have pics from 3 ROMs ago still on my phone.;) any important pics I upload to box or drive anyway.

        • duke69111

Your apps would be restored from google without data, but your pictures and video are likely located on your internal storage and they would not be wiped unless you choose to wipe the sd..

  • http://twitter.com/06stangSC Alex V

I’m still using Paranoid but I loved Mmuzzy for the stock experience. I’ll give this one a go.

  • Gus

    Wooo! Great choice DL.

  • http://twitter.com/trlovejoy trlovejoy

This would be exciting news if the OTA for the VZW GN’s 4.2.2 wasn’t all over the place. But it WILL be useful the next time the VZW GN gets left behind, which it most likely will.

    • JaronDW

Shiny has been rock solid throughout us waiting for dear old vzw to catch up the rest of the Android world. I also predict Baldwinguy77 will lead us into the world of Key Lime Pie well before vzw catches up too.

    • tomn1ce

That should be shortly after Google I/O…..

  • KatsumeBlisk

I use this. I want a “stock” Galaxy Nexus. Since the Verizon GNex isn’t updated as much, this allows me to use what Google would ship if this was like a normal Nexus sold through the Play Store.

  • http://twitter.com/SJFee SJFee

    RIP pete

    • EvanTheGamer

      Don’t you mean Bugless Beast?

  • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

This is easily the best ROM available for the VZW Gnex! Simple, reliable, fast. No extra crap that causees bugs and incompatibilities. This is the perfect ROM for those who were fans of Bugless Beast.

    • EvanTheGamer

      EASILY! Agreed!

    • http://androiddelight.com/ Audio

Thanks. I’m looking to update my BB and was wondering what’s out there!

  • EvanTheGamer

It’s ALWAYS SHINY! on the other side of space!

That’s awesome that you guys featured SHINY, the greatest ROM this side of Earth!

  • Marc Anderson

The next BEAST has arrived… and they call him Shiny. Been on this since 4.2.0, nothing short of amazing.

  • http://twitter.com/canoy07 Eric G Canoy

If you don’t know what happened to Pete, he got a life:
    https://plus.google.com/113699611323257837519/posts/YV2YZVNQzqB

    • snowblind64

IIRC, he got a girlfriend and the ROM updates stopped.

    • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

      How dare he! lol

      • http://twitter.com/canoy07 Eric G Canoy

he is living his life post-ROM by working for TMo with a Nexus 4

        • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

          I know. We’re friends! He’s doing well!

          • http://twitter.com/canoy07 Eric G Canoy

            You’re Friends? LUUUUUCKY! lol

    • EvanTheGamer

You can STILL have a life and continue doing the things you love to do(like in his case, developing for Android, or he use to anyways).

I freakin’ bloody DESPISE people when they say, “Oh…get a life!” Really? If you love doing whatever, that means you don’t have a life? That’s just straight up bs. You can STILL do whatever the F you want to do and still have a life outside of doing those things you love to do. Come on now.

That is unless you’re a hermit who lives in a basement deep underground with no sunlight..well…that’s different then. lol

  • AnotherAndroidKid

    Great Choice.

I was disappointed, but certainly can understand, when Peter stopped BuglessBeast. But Shiny has been awesome for me ever since and I love the pace of updates.

  • Lakerfan

+1 Another switchover to Shiny from BB…

  • Dan

Any chance he will make this for maguro?

  • Walt Danker

I switched to Shiny a few weeks back when I got tired of AOKP being buggy. I had forgotten how nice it was to have my battery last all day. Shiny is stable, fast and pure JB. If you are looking for for stock 4.2.2 on Verizon, and you want Google Wallet to work, definitely try this ROM.

  • http://twitter.com/MrBigFeathers Jason

Best ROM I’ve ever tried on my Verizon GNex. It’s nice to have what we should have had to begin with. Best of all root isn’t a requirement.

  • http://twitter.com/jfbsays JFB

Wait, where did the Fonz go?! I’ve been on Bugless since my OG Droid!

    • EvanTheGamer

He stopped development on Bugless Beast as well as stopping development on all things Android. He’s pretty much done with Android. No idea what he’s doing now.

      • http://twitter.com/jfbsays JFB

        :(

      • http://twitter.com/turdbogls Turdbogls

He’s not done with android. He just got a life. college, and a full time Job that he gets PAID to do. i was sad to see him go too, but its not like he abandoned Android all together. he just doesn’t have any time to do it.

  • http://profiles.google.com/babybybusta Andrew Thompson

Yes!! Best stock ROM I’ve used yet!

    • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

Perfect for those who were running Bugless Beast.
