Spec Chart: Blackberry Z10 vs. Nexus 4 vs. DROID DNA vs. Note 2 vs. RAZR MAXX HD

blackberry z10

In case you weren’t paying attention, we thought we should point out that Blackberry tried to reinvent itself this morning in more ways than one. First, they are actually called Blackberry now, rather than RIM. That’s right, it’s a global name change that goes into effect immediately. Second, they announced Blackberry 10 (their newest OS) and two devices – the Blackberry Z10 and some random QWERTY thing that no one will want (it may be called the Q10).

The Z10, however, is their flagship and one that is aiming directly at Android and iOS. And since this device has a full touchscreen, is nothing like the failure that was the Storm, and might make some of you peek out the corner of your eye to see what it can do, we thought a spec battle was in store. If that seems weird, it’s not – we do this with all the big competitors.

Is it the Z10 or the F*ing ZED10!!?? Damn British are so ass backwards!

    • http://twitter.com/Alankrut Alankrut Patel

actually everywhere else in the world they say “zed”. We Americans tend to do things differently

      • ForrestTracey

Yeah Moron those places were under British rule at one point!!! Get a clue dipsh*t!

      • Tyler Cameron

Wait, so instead of Z being “zee”, it’s “zed” outside of America?

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dominick-White/642535026 Dominick White

          yes

          • Tyler Cameron

            Lean something new everyday c:

  • Chris

What did they do? Buy all of TI’s left over processors on clearance?

  • yungqb7

Interesting device I must say. However I was never into blackberry, so I’ll wait for the gs4 to drop.

  • Daniel Sanchez

    Blackberry sucks

  • Octotron

Honestly, this device looks like a winner. BB10 looks great. It is a shame that this will be competing against the SGS4, etc. when it comes out. If it were out right now, I would give it a spin.

    • roberthenderson

winner in the who can make the oldest looking phone in 2013 contest

      • Octotron

Not everyone who likes mobile technology needs the “Dell Alienware” of phones. As an IT professional, this is a very attractive device. However, I fear it will be outclassed very quickly. They should have done away with the US market wait time and had it hit next week, in my opinion.

        • Dave

Nice AlienWare reference, I may use that in the future.

  • overclock

I really hope Moto beefs up the next iteration of the Razr. More RAM and a better processor. The problem is that an octocore won’t really matter but it is all about perception. And if one phone has a dual core and the one next to it has a tricore the uninformed consumer will go with the tricore just because.

But what goes up must come down. BB was the bee’s knees in the hay day. I never had one or used one. Somebody once told me that it was the best for email. BB devices had great battery life. But they’ve been taken over by smartphones that got smarter faster than BB did. Sad to see the demise of a great company that at one time ruled the world.

  • autdog

    at least it has LTE

  • gp126904

Am I hearing them correctly, it is called the Zed10??

    • http://twitter.com/Alankrut Alankrut Patel

It is Z10. Other countries pronounce Z as “zed”

  • ToddAwesome

    Zed’s dead baby, Zed’s dead.

  • shecalledmejay

I think they are going to need a bigger battery

  • roberthenderson

I was just saying the other day that I wished somebody would make a phone that’s the same size as current phones, but with a much smaller screen. Oh, and could you put some onscreen buttons on it to make the screen feel even smaller pleeeease? Changed the name? You should have changed the engineers.

  • shecalledmejay

I love that this chart doesn’t include the *phone, I have been looking forward to the day on which we don’t compare phones to the 8phone standard anymore

  • jer85008

Is it really a TI processor? Pretty much the same size/weight as the N4 but with a smaller screen. There just isn’t anything exciting enough to jump ship from Android, but I do like the OS much more than WP8.

  • GABravo2005

Apple lawsuit incoming in 5…4…3…2…1… Damn it looks like the 5…..

    • ToddAwesome

      rounded corners!?!?!?!?

    • shecalledmejay

I don’t see how looks like and iphone

      • http://twitter.com/Alankrut Alankrut Patel

the overall flat edges and its back gives it the similar look

  • dhirensavalia

I think they are about 2-4 years late on this. They should have tried to make touch-screen focused OS instead of doing an OS that looked like a port for the Storm. Oh well. This does look like it could be a good phone.

  • Casey Maines

So…a rep at the Verizon store told me the other day that “any phone with NFC capability can be used with wireless charging units.” Is that true? I thought it was only available on specific phones like the DNA.

    • Shane Redman

      Haha….oh Verizon reps…

    • JD

      Wrong.

    • gokusimpson

NFC is not wireless charging. They’re different and separate.

    • http://www.DanielTaylor.me/ Daniel Taylor

      That Verizon rep is wrong.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dominick-White/642535026 Dominick White

That verizon rep is a idiot,NFC is for wireless payments, not charging

  • BhaktaRB

355 megapixel display! One would wonder why RIM is still selling phones.. Start selling the screen! LOL

    • Dave

I’m surprised they didn’t list the screen as 326 megahertz mAh.

  • Capt. Crunch

DROID DNA seems like the best option for me, just wish its battery had 1000 more mAh and ran stock.

  • Edgardo Rios

    “355 megapixel display”(0:32 mark). Impressive :D

    • nwd1911

LOL, I missed that the first time. Thanks for calling it out.

    • Dave

That comes in handy when you want to snap a picture of your burger basket and turn it into a billboard.

  • tyguy829

ok, its a qualcomm s4 1.5ghz, not an omap 4470. that would just be too funny though

  • Buy This

Not terrible but far from future proof, especially at the time they are releasing it. When one of your selling points for the new device is how good it looks juxtaposed with your previous products, that’s generally indicative the new product can’t stand on its own legs IMO

  • Dw_astor

    peek

  • DuongVu

Can you confirm the CPU? I thought I saw a Snapdragon S4 Plus from Engadget.

  • Sean Wood

Does anyone else think this thing looks like the bastard child of the Moto Droid X and the Iphone 4s? ha ha ha

  • pcloadletter

Blackberry is dead. Our corporation shut down our BB server last year because it is very costly and now only supports exchange devices. On top of that, carriers are charging $10-$20/month extra if you use a BB.

  • RoadsterHD1

Good looking phone. BB did a nice job.

  • shooter50

Looks like the Note 2 is the clear winner again for the majority of people who don’t care about stock Android.

  • chazzdjr

I’m pulling for blackberry. I hope they can make it work. I used to love my old blackberry.

  • Futbolrunner

Also, they named ALICIA KEYS as their Global Creative Director!

    I wish I was kidding.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tylerjehills Tyler James Edward Hills

I’ll take the Note 2 for $500 please Alex

  • Lorenzo c

did anybody else see that 3 dot menu button?
    android conspiracy o.o

  • Davros

Did they buy all the left over droid X bezels or what?

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Hah, it does indeed look like a Droid X.

      • Fattie McDoogles

And the back looks like an iPhone

        • michael arazan

          iPhone lawsuit in 3…2…1…

          • Zack Krocek

I was thinking the exact, same, thing.

          • Jack Holt

Blackberry would have to actually see some product in order for Apple to pay attention :P

    • http://jakesiegers.com/ Jake

I was going to say the same thing. lol

    • roberthenderson

I honestly think the Droid X Basil’s were smaller than this half Gameboy monstrosity.

      • nightscout13

        Basil? Bezel?

        • New_Guy

Quiet…he’s going to cook and eat it!

          “Blackberries….mmmmmmmmm”

          Haha! :)

    • http://twitter.com/joseph_type joseph a barrientos

reminds me of the rumored images of the x, when it was called the shadow and we all wished that it had a slide out keyboard! oh the days

    • nightscout13

The Droid X Bezels were so durable, they were able to sell ALL Droid X models to Blackbery for refinement. :D

      • michael arazan

Blackberries ad campaign for green recycling of old handsets

  • Rennie Allen

The Z10 hardware is acceptable and the OS, and user experience is an impressive upgrade from either iOS or Android. It is a Unix OS that is significantly more secure and more reliable than Android. It is definitely worth spending a half hour checking out at the local carrier store when they arrive…

  • RealtorRy

Looks nice to me! I love my GS3 but I started out with Blackberry like many of us did… Im excited to mess with one. Might even pick one up as secondary device.

  • http://twitter.com/ITGuy11 Shawn Villaire

OMAP4470 LOL Year old tech that is EOL.

    • http://twitter.com/Belatukadro Justtyn Hutcheson

The 4470 is a capable chipset, especially in the graphics department. While it is not in the same compute category as the Exynos 5 and S4 Pro, it holds its own and should deliver solid performance and battery life so long as the software is properly optimized, as with any recent SoC.

      http://www.anandtech.com/show/6158/the-archos-101-xs-review/3

      • James Hill

Yes, and the public at large loves the old “optimized” argument. It better be an s4 Pro or BB has already lost.

  • Shane Redman

Just let me know when they port that keyboard over

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

It’s got to be coming, right? Do we know who made it?

      • Francisco Rodriguez

I thought SwiftKey made the BB10 keyboard?

  • Jeff

As someone who had a piece of junk BB Storm it would be very unlikely for me to ever buy another BB device. However there are a lot of people out there who still prefer BB because of the basic things like email and messaging that BB does extremely well. i expect that this phone will do very well with that core audience.

    • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

BB does 2 things well. Interfacing with corporate networks and messaging with other BB users.

      • http://twitter.com/hesh_monster Damon C. Walden

        All six of them…

      • Green

That’s why my husband’s company still uses them. He doesn’t like it, but it’s free.

        • Dave

The sad thing is that their 3% market share includes companies (numerous)that buy them for employees. So it makes that number incredibly sad when you figure how many people “choose” to buy one.

  • http://www.facebook.com/queef Kiefer Lobb

    droid x?? motorola lawsuits??

  • rockstar323

The specs are on par with the iPhone 5. I think that’s who they are going after. They want to be the “it” phone and steal Apple’s spotlight as the fashion statement phone. I was impressed with the keynote. I think they will be a contender again. I’m actually looking forward to trying it out.

  • trophynuts

wow talking about jacking a form factor. That thing looks exactly like a Droid X

    • Hunter

Motorola is done using the form factor, i’m sure they won’t care.

  • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

These phones will serve as a source of new ideas and features for iOS and Android to absorb, nothing more.

    • calculatorwatch

So true. Watching the death of Palm proved definitively that it takes more than a really nice and well thought out interface to survive in this game. Not that the Z10 hardware is as bad as the Palm Pre, but on all other fronts it’s the same story. They’ve got very little developer support and most of their long-time customers have left for Apple or Android by now and aren’t looking back.

But if we’re really lucky the Goog will buy them out and do some feature/interface porting from BB10 to Android, they’re both Java based OS’s after all.

      • michael arazan

Or just for the patents alone

  • Black Bear-E

    Poor Blackberry.

  • hfoster52

So if this was last year this phone might have gotten noticed. But it’s 2013 and this will get skipped over unless your company makes you have a blackberry then this is a welcome upgrade. The 700k Apps in the app store I have a question of how many are there unsupported and just lingering.

  • http://twitter.com/utahcon Adam Barrett

Too bad the Blackberry is a Blackberry.

    • zwade

      The snozberries taste like snozberries.

      • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

        ^^

      • Mapekz

My mind was blown when I found out that guy was Christina Hendricks’s husband.

  • WAldenIV

The screen and the battery seem a bit small, but at least it’s not a generation or two behind like the last flagship phone they introduced. The top and bottom bezel are a waste of space.

  • Famouz Starz

ugh the maxx hd is running 4.1 ;)

  • Shane Redman

Didn’t they say that ButtBerry was on a 3 year contract? or was that only in the UK?

    • zmberven

Canada…their contracts are all sorts of weird

  • sc0rch3d

CEO or presenters didn’t talk about battery life (or specs hardly at all). I’m curious if that 1800mah is suitable. I realize I can’t compare my LTE Nexus to Z10 directly, but the Z10 will have to power that monster processor and radios all just the same.

excited to see this one in person, never been BB fan

    • BSweetness

The reviews that I’ve read today (Engadget, The Verge) say it’s mediocre and disappointing. The Verge said it often wouldn’t last them a day, dying by 6 or 7 at night (after having been taken off a charger at 8 or 9 in the morning).

      • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Every review I read didn’t have many great things to say about it. The only one was from Crackberry, but that’s to be expected. They have been counting the seconds to this day.

        • Mikey Styles

This is why I undervalue his opinion & have so for quite sometime. I thoroughly enjoy how you guys try as best as possible to give impartial reviews & opinions. This site has become more diverse over the last yr or 2. Thnx guys for all the hard work.

  • S.Ober

    Yawn! moving on.

  • Ziang Chen

    Looks like an Iphone….. #applespamlawsuitwars

    • yungqb7

      Only if it sells well

    • roberthenderson

      yeah, the first 1
