Apple Files for Notification Center Patent, Android World Lulz

apple notificatino patent

Back in 2009, Google filed a patent for Android’s “notification bar,” a feature that Apple wouldn’t figure out how to implement into iOS for another couple of years. Here we are almost four years after that patent was filed and Apple has decided that its “notification center” is worthy of its own.

Android’s “notification bar” allows users to manage incoming messages, Tweets, calendar appointments, alarms, and emails, to name a select few. It’s evolved over time, but back in 2009, it was accessed just as it is today, with a simple swipe down from the top of the phone. Users are also notified of new notifications through this bar as they come in.

Apple’s “notification center” acts much the same. As notifications arrive, the top of the phone notifies the person, which can then tap on those notifications or swipe down from the top of the phone to access the entire “center.” Apple has tried to beef up their “center” by including widgets in it, something Android has no need for as the operating system allows widgets in a variety of other places.

There is no telling if Apple will attempt to use this patent in future lawsuits, but I can’t imagine it doing much good, especially after having filed for it years after Google attempted to patent a similar technology. On a positive note, this is one of the few times we have seen Apple show up late to the party on the patent front.

I’ve loved apple products for a while. Had an iPhone, hated an iPhone and have used anything but since. apple does not, and cannot logically apply for a patent and it was CLEARLY copied tech.

IF the patent office approves this, we were supposed to be gone in 2012.

This is beyond sad for apple!

  • master94

Apple is really good at bribing the Patent Office. Unlike the Google one that has yet to be approved, Apple’s one will be approved in 10 seconds. this is a huge threat if actually approved because of Obama’s patent reform which allows which ever form got processed first, even if sent in later to get control of said patent. And lets face it, the patent office approves all Apple crap patents without even looking for prior art.

  • Lyn Scott

    Greedy bastards!

  • TheVoiceOfReason

The only thing sadder than Apple trying to patent a technology they didn’t implement first are the blind religious Apple-devoted in that thread who are jumping in to defend them and to try to convince everyone that Apple didn’t really steal this idea…

    • TheVoiceOfReason

Hah! And I was banned from their forums for posting that. The truth really does hurt sometimes.

  • arturo_bandini

This inspired me. I went ahead and patented the light bulb and the telephone today.

  • EvanTheGamer

Here’s a nice, big *YAWN*. Nothing new here. Moving on…

LOL. What a joke. If I was part of the US Patent Comission I would laugh my ass off at this patent.

Wow, has anyone read the facebook notification? That is some name – Kimchikraut d’Ayodhya and 2 other friends also commented on Sabrina Gabel’s photo: “Resist the nakie machine!”

    WTF?

….and it was accepted? I think American should patent Kim Kardashian butt too, coz now adays every girl wants have same butt as her! Sweet mother of Odin! What a joke law system in this country!

  • Cuberly

Going from RIM, then iOS & finally settling on Android. This makes my decision to happily stay with my 1yo Razr Maxx all the more justified.

    • Eliseo Banda

How you liking that phone? I hear the battery life is insanely good.

      • Cuberly

INSANELY good, really like my phone. I don’t believe in the “perfect” phone nor platform. But I really do like ICS on the DRM. I think this will be the first phone I’ve kept for over 2 years for quite a while.

  • Andy

    Resist the nakie machine? Scandalous.

    • joejoe5709

Awww. Beat me to it. Weird, right?

  • 640k

Here’s what I hope happens: Apple’s patent gets approval, they try to back-date infringement on all Android devices. Courts recognize that Apple is maliciously filing patents in order to gain an edge in the industry. Patent office is torn apart and tech patents are completely reworked to prevent companies from filing frivolous patents. Tech industry is shaken up and forces carriers to stop locking down devices because of an onslaught of similar devices that work across any carrier. Carriers are forced to provide service with value and not act as another Best Buy to buy electronics from, at MSRP prices……..

….OK I went a little overboard, but the trickle down effect would be amazing.

But seriously… C’mon Apple. Pull your head out. It’s not gonna happen.

  • Rich

not to mention that MOST of apples patents were bogus and were not worthy of even being recorded, yet they were… There lays the end problem, only BIG companies get WHAT THEY WANT… That is, until Google says other wise lol

If the USPTO grants this, they are complete and utter morons.

    • master94

You assume they are not? Look at all the past patents they gave Apple. Round black corners, face unlock (Despite Android doing it first), green call phone icon etc.

    • http://riteshtripathy.wordpress.com/ Ritesh Tripathy

Is there still a debate over that? I thought that was settled over a year ago!

      • http://riteshtripathy.wordpress.com/ Ritesh Tripathy

Its only natural. I’ve seen it happen way too often.

  • jeff3yan

This is getting stupid. I’m hoping for the next disruptive market that the major players properly patent their ideas so that there’s significantly less copying.

  • possomcrast1

Apple is lucky Google hasn’t sued them for their blatant rip-off of the Android notification bar.

    • Danrarbc

Can’t, the patent hasn’t been approved yet.

      • Jeremiah!

They undoubtedly have provisional patent protection, which gives them the rights to the IP before the USPTO makes a final ruling

  • Herbert

Le epic meemee lulz me gusta guize!!!11oneeleven xDDD

  • ObviousNinja2

I hope this is fake. As an Apple fan. and Current Android Phone/Tablet user. I have used both items and Apple’s notification system looks strangely similar to a Jail Broken Iphone App. The icons and layout is almost exact.

I dont know how they have claim over this. Give it up Apple, Android or whomever got this first. Even I personally agree with that.

  • http://ronoffringa.wordpress.com Ron Offringa

Here is the link to the patent from Google, which includes much more than the notification shade: http://www.google.com/patents/US20090249247 Doesn’t look like it was awarded yet.

  • Chris

“As notifications arrive, the top of the phone notifies the person, …”

This is, unfortunately (for iOS users), untrue. The lack of this feature is one of — if not the — major downfall of the iOS notification bar.

iOS has android beat in the stock lockscreen notifications game, but there are plenty of android apps to remedy that.

    • Danrarbc

The notification bar works while the phone is locked, it is the lockscreen notification.

    • PhoenixPath

      Obviously, it’s Memorex…

  • gbenj

They also can’t even think about using it in lawsuits because its just a patent application…and one that would be hard to see how it could be accepted.

    • http://twitter.com/samari711 samari711

It’s not hard to see how it would be accepted, patent examiners have their performance evaluated by how many initial patent applications they process. If they reject a patent and the filer re-files it goes back on their desk but doesn’t help their metrics, so they’re inclined to approve when possible.

  • EC8CH

I think Aaron Goodmiller said it best…

  • ddevito

I wouldn’t worry Android fans. Android’s notification center is, safe to say, safe from competition from anyone else.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=794060687 Derek Jones

This seems like prior art to me. Maybe someone more familiar with patent laws can chime in.

  • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

Apple’s implementation is much different and much less useful. If they do get a patent approved, it will be much different and probably won’t affect Android.

    • SchwannyT

Well apple isn’t going to invest in it until it has a patent to protect it. If Google got their patent and told Apple to remove it or pay up, Apple could just remove it and most iOS users would never know….

  • http://twitter.com/ssantinelli Steven Santinelli

It says Android filed back in 2009, but was it awarded the patent, and if so, how can apple apply for one that already exists???

    • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

Because the notification centers in Android vs iOS are fairly different.

      • http://www.gizmoninja.com/ Tabe

Just like the iPhone and Samsung phones/other Android phones/tablets are fairly different?

        • hfoster52

Hahaha… Yeah every time I pick up my note 2 I really think this is just like an Iphone..

    • rich

because ANYONE is allowed to submit a patent, it is UP TO THE PATENT OFFICE TO LOOK FOR COPIES OR ALIKE IDEAS… again as I stated up top, ONLY BIG COMPANIES GET WHAT THEY WANT, i.e. apple… most patent from apple are bogus and were rubber stamped… Google could sue apple for all the features they basically stole years after it Google made them, however seeing how Google is open sourced, its a bit different to steal open source but it shouldn’t be allowed to have an idea already out there, and then apple comes and takes it and then patents it… NO ONE SHOULD be allowed to patent NON TECH BREAK THROUGH’s… Meaning NO ONE should be able to patent ROUNDED CORNERS, you can only have 2 types, Chamfer or fillet type corners… one is a arc and the other is a line… rounded corners have nothing to do with a break through in technology and or features…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=674902817 Zach Davis

I bet Apple will still come at Google saying Apple thought of it first

    • Tyler Casilio

      I was gonna write that…..

      • kk

The correct response would of been “Hey I wrote that first”

    • Michael Hutwagner

that only happens to samsung lol

      • ds

Yeah, Apple will sue Samsung for having the notification bar..

    • FAL_Fan

Well apple did think of everything first…android is stealing all of apple’s good ideas especially the notification light on phones…total apple copying…and customizable software…totally apple…the list can go on but I will refrain for time’s sake.

      • OpenSourceFan

ummm what?! what notification light? apple doesn’t have a LED in the phone except the rear camera and that probably was developed by third party developers prior to iOS 6. and customizable, psh, don’t make me laugh. There’s a reason why people call it jailbreaking, cause iOS is essentially prison, IE no customizing to the way customers like, except the wallpaper and it took 4 gens of iphone to get that.

        • Andrew Hubbard

I think that was a joke.

          • michael arazan

And iOS will have widgets? iFanboys will cry out in hatred over that, they all rip on androids widgets in every forum and comment section and saying there is no need for it. I guess until apple implements it to their own os it is awful then turns out to be innovative.

          • FAL_Fan

I forgot to add widgets! Another thing that Apple had to have come up with first! And yes, obviously my whole “Apple first” thing was sarcastic…for those that couldn’t figure that out… IE open source fan

  • zepfloyd

*checks* Nope, not the Onion, wow.

    • Rob Delaney

      I thought the same thing

  • http://twitter.com/sparty569 sparty569

I was actually waiting to see if Google would sue Apple over this when Apple first introduced this.

    • John Karaman

They could, but Google isn’t being an apple. Google is innovating, not being idiots lashing out at people better than them.

  • chris125

I hope the USPTO does not grant this

  • npompei

“Resist the nakie machine” huh? They should be denied patent just for putting that in their drawing!

  • Steve Jobs

    Yes!

    • bogy25

Even if you had something good to say -1 just for your name

  • http://twitter.com/RyanMarkwald Ryan Markwald

So Google “attempted” to patent it, I am assuming they didn’t get an actual patent for it, was it denied or something? Off Googling it I guess…

    • Danrarbc

It’s still in the approval process. No final decisions.

      • sogajeffrey

its been so long and still hasn’t been approved? The USPTO was so quick to award apple patents but they take so long for google’s? This is so stupid… I bet apple gives iphones to everyone in the USPTO on a monthly basis as a bribe…

  • KleenDroid

Oh Boy now that is Amazing

    • moelsen8

      that really is amazing..

      • zepfloyd

so are the comments from inside the distorted reality over there….LOL.

        • tharealoc

I just took a quick look at their comments..oh man they are delusional.

          • turdsandwich

“To all the people who claim Apple cribbed Android’s Notification Bar: WebOS had it first, and Apple hired WebOS’s notification engineer. Moreover, you can’t get in trouble for taking somebody’s work if that work was a derivative of your own copyrighted work. Go ask the guy who wrote an unsolicited screenplay for Rocky 4 and sent it to Stallone in an attempt to get hired. Stallone just took it, made the movie, and didn’t pay the guy. The guy sued and the Court ruled that because the guy’s work was a derivative of Stallone’s work(e.g. Based on character’s Stallone created), the guy had no case.”

Holy crap. Just like most of the stories I read about Apple these days, my reaction to this is “what a giant douche.” This guy was right on the money with his analogy, I guess.

          • http://www.facebook.com/rob.dallara Rob Dallara

feel bad for that dude, that ain’t right…

        • moelsen8

  • tharealoc

Ugh apple…i just cannot stand their business model.

    • Michael Hutwagner

yea the same model as every other business in history dont hate the player hate the game.

      • tharealoc

every business’ model is to troll the courts? i think not.
