Report: Motorola and Google are Designing the “X Phone”

motorola logo

According to a new report out of the Wall Street Journal, Google and Motorola are finally working on their first big project, a “marquee” product known internally as the “X Phone.” The major goal of this phone, clearly, is to create something that can finally rival products from Samsung and Apple, but also try to help bring Motorola back from the dead. With an increasingly shrinking market share, Moto is in desperate need of a big hit.

Little is known about the phone, but this report suggests that it may have hit some supply chain obstacles already. Moto was potentially looking at flexible displays for this device, along with ceramic materials that would allow the phone to be more stress-resistant, offer different shapes, and new colors. They may have to re-think that strategy a bit.

Other potential focuses include making the camera top notch, taking advantage of Viewdle (a recent acquisition of Motorola’s), and getting the phone out to the world in 2013.

We’ve talked about this in the past, but Google has put together a special team at Motorola whose only goal is to create something mind-blowingly good, new, and never seen before. We would assume that this team is working on the X Phone.

This report also mentioned that Motorola would create an “X Tablet” after the phone is done.

And yep, we’re dying to hear your thoughts.

As long as I can buy it unlocked from the play store and not have to worry about carrier bs I’m all game. Verizon killed the nexus

  • I would love to see the WebTop 3 (using Androind) and phone/tablet docking like the PadPhone 2.

    Maybe this is Nexus 5?

  • sporttster

Oh man, do it…just DO it! Top camera, 3g ram, SD card slot, flex HD display, wild design, solid mats, KLP, quad power sipping proc, >>>>OPEN BL!!!<<<<`….I'll throw cash at it!

    • If google’s wokring on it, we may not see an SD card slot. They’ve already voiced their dislike for external storage in the Android ecosystem. Other than that, I don’t see any of this being a problem

  • Artur Z.

Had og droid than Xoom. After Xoom I ain’t getting moto crap

  • Larry Franks

Come on, Bionic. Hold on until this phone is released!

  • Jroc869, Cool story bro

I think I speak for most here when I say GIGGITY GIGGITY GOOOO all over the keyboard lol. I have been waiting for a Moto superphone forever now.

  • maXX. {{-_-}}

  • neXus. {{-_-}}

  • Trevor

Me = excited. Then immediately dissatisfied when I think of the slim chance it’ll come to Verizon…and I really don’t want to leave Verizon at this point.

  • bikerbill12

Big battery ,flex display at 1080 at least quad core 3gb ram , all carriers, 5″ for 299 no contract . Also a 13mp camera with huge widevoew lense

  • joejoe5709

Hmmm… sooo combine the best of HTC and Sammy, mix it with Moto’s patents and see what you get? Could be good. But it also might too good to be true! I wonder if this has any bearing upon the next Nexus devices?

  • I’ll wait for the X Phone Maxx or X Phone HD or X Phone HD Maxx….

  • RoadsterHD1

Ultimate Droid by Motorola. Nexus the next generation.

  • Aaron

One phone for all carriers. Same name, same dimensions, sames internals (at least up to the cdma and gsm parts). Please. And with the same great Moto radios.

  • John Simonelli

Moto should release maybe a phone each quarter or half year instead of clogging their resources by realeasing crap.

  • shecalledmejay

I think I have found my future proof phone lol, now all I need is to make my Gnex last until the middle of next year.

  • deejay

    Unlock the bootloader!!!!!!!

  • I just got a Razr M and it’s AMAZING

  • Prime7

Forget the phone. Make a carrier, Google!

  • chris125

They need another phone to skyrocket android like the original droid did

  • MooleyBooleyTroll

What?? All the Moto haters are turning back into Moto Sheep again??

    Go figure lol

  • RoadsterHD1

2013 is going to be good!!! I’m starting to save now for my new phone. GO MOTO FTW

  • RoadsterHD1

This what I as waiting for. Google and Moto. Two great minds. Do I smell a Quad-core 2.0GHz processor and 3gig of Ram? I truly hope so. OH, and Key lime pie….

    • Will have Wayne chip from Nvidia., 1080p screen, 13M camera, 2M front camera, 4.7Inches, with every radio on the planet.

      • RoadsterHD1

Is the Wayne chip faster than Snap-dragon4 Pro?

  • Will Rehse

It seems the processor is a big ??? here. Maybe an Intel processor? they did make one phone with intel inside already. Could be an incredible future, intel, google, motorola and my last big bomb, Google/Dish LTE. NEW Provider. Mind blown.

  • Iron_Catastrofe

I’m all in for this phone. Had 2 moto android phones prior to my GS3

  • These products on Google’s own 4G LTE Wireless Network = My piggy bank contents.

Seriously, though, this is some of the greatest news any Android fan could hope for. Moto makes top notch equipment, but have recently been lost with design. Enter Google, and now I have hopes for X.

  • DanWazz

A new shape is need IMO. I’ve never liked those tapered edges.

  • rrosotho

Its about time….I have been waiting on news of the first Motorola phone since google had taken over. I do like samsung but motorola is my favorite! But if motorola wants to comeback they need a new look and to come out ahead of the game and not with last years specs.

    • RoadsterHD1

You said it. We more that two gigs of Ram, and more that 1.7GHz and maybe a 6 core processor.

      • rrosotho

Thank you! and i will add a 5 inch 1080p screen

      • I feel like anything more that 4 cores is totally wasted at this point in the game. I mean, does ANYTHING in the play store require that much speed to work? It’s not like you will be playing multiple games at once…

  • WPNX

I know why everyone is excited and already planning on saving their pennies for this..Motorola is the one brand we all wish would put out the best phone …why? Because we all know Moto is known for building rock solid phones..If you had a choice..Sammy nexus, LG nexus, HTC nexus or Moto Nexus..the majority would pick Moto..I would..MOTOROLA FTW!

  • SecurityNick

If it was sans Blur and unlockable, I would highly consider it. A “nexus” device with Moto hardware would be a dream phone.

  • anezarati

count me out if this is on a carrier

  • CompCrash

I would take a Motorola phone, I am hoping for something good for my next upgrade in Aug.

  • Moto Nexus anyone? Where do I sign? 🙂

  • ddevito

This must be the rumored Nexus X.

  • Sean Rowe

I have never owned a Motorola smartphone, but I hear everyone rave about the build quality so I am interested.

    Must have:
    Top notch camera
    Big battery
    Top of the line GPU/Processor
    unlockable bootloader
    Top tier display

Doesn’t have to be the thinnest phone on the earth, I believe most of us could care less if it is .02mm thicker than the i*hone as long as it lasts 24* hours on a single charge.

    Make it happen!

Wait for the X Maxx instead

  • calum wilper

  • cizzlen

    My next phone. Confirmed.

    • john

mine too, give me two please

  • Abhisshack D

please add a SDCard Support otherwise its a huge trade-off for me

  • tomn1ce

This could be my next phone if its as nice as it sounds….and it lands on vzw….and of course if its true….

  • Oh boy.

  • Would be great as my contracts are up in November. Great excuse to leave Verizon.

  • William_Morris

    Moto Razr neXus, anyone?

  • RaptorOO7

Make it a Nexus with bleeding edge tech and micros SD support or 64GB minimum with ZERO BLOATWARE. Then you would have my attention.

  • Bionicman

i have 2 upgrades available next year so if it comes to VZW, i’m in….well…as long as the specs are truly amazing and not some weird mashup of a Nexus 4 and Razr M.

  • With my upgrade coming up in May, Googlerola may have given me a reason to hold off on getting something else (like an S4).

  • Silver Veloz

Hey, if they do this right, I’m all for sticking with Motorola. Can’t wait.

  • Gage

Make it at least 5in with ling battery life and HDMI output.

  • Masterminded

    Nexus Maxx, please

  • Q’s

Verizon better not screw this up.
